Debate Drinking Games Offer a Shot of Politics

ABC News’ Nitya Venkataraman Reports: Who says debate-watching is a passive activity? You can take your debate watch party to the next level with a swig for ‘mavericks’, a shot for ‘Alaska’, and permission to chug every time Sen. Joe Biden references Amtrak, the working class or Washington insiders.

In anticipation of tonight’s vice presidential debate, some debate watchers are proving that there’s no need to wait until Election Night to drown your political sorrows.

There’s a game for every skill level. [And even a non-alcoholic Bingo! over at Newsweek for those who want to be on their toes at the watercooler on Friday morning.]

The online edition of MIT’s student newspaper, The Tech, offers a drinking game tailored to the questions and answers: a shot of vodka if Alaska governor Sarah Palin cites her state’s proximity to Russia as foreign policy experience and a license to spill if Biden gaffes.

Nick Semenkovich, editor-in-chief of The Tech, called tonight’s face-off an "epic debate" and said the Campus Life department of his newspaper targeted the vice presidential candidates because the pairing involved made it "more likely to see a hilarious gaffe". (The Tech didn’t do a drinking game for last Friday’s presidential debate.)

Over in the Talking Points Memo Café, a reader posts a more simplified version in swigs and shots: a swig of beer whenever Palin mentions the first name of a member of her family or utters the phrase "Let me tell ya,"; a shot of whiskey for the ‘Bridge to Nowhere.’

And there is an even more simple game over at the Greasy Guide. Flubs are measured in drinks and you take one every time Palin mentions a world leader, calls Sen. Biden "Joe", and answers a question to which someone at your debate-watching party questions her answer.

Timeout tacks on drinks for every time Biden says "malarkey", "Geraldine Ferraro", or refers to himself in the third person.

Anything you’ll be drinking to that weren’t mentioned? Let us know in the comments.

And don’t start drinking so early that you forget to tune in tonight for the actual debate — ABC News live coverage begins at 9 p.m. ET or can be streamed online at ABCNews.com.

Everytime Palin uses the word “like” incorrectly. i.e. I have been hearing Joe’s speeches since I was like in second grade.

I am willing to bet there will be several Republicans drinking by the end of tonite. Most of them associated with McCain campaign. Why is McCain in Iowa? Anybody?

That’s right. Get rid of all your liquor now. Obama’s islamic buddies frown on alchohol. They’ll just take it for themselves, or pour it out in your yard, when they arrive.

Perhaps this will make up for CoverGate: The New Yorker has just endorsed Barack Obama in an editorial just released online and on newsstands on Monday in the October 13th issue. The editorial — by “the Editors” — is called “The Choice” and should probably surprise no one, but man do they make their case: 4,214 words with a laundry list of areas in which the Bush administration has failed the country, and McCain has failed to lead or inspire. (That’s the kindest way of expressing it. Here’s a ess kind way: “John McCain [has] played the part of a vaudeville illusionist, asking to be regarded as an apostle of change after years of embracing the essentials of the Bush agenda with ever- increasing ardor.”) In contrast, the “Editors” point out how Obama has done just that: Leading and inspiring, but also following up his promise for change with thought, strategy, work and action.

Nancy Polosi gave her speech and the House failed to pass the bill. The Senate passed a horrible bill that will do nothing to fix the problem. And, then Harry Reid (Democrat) says insurance companies are failing…..and their stock begins to drop. Can it be that all of the problems are being caused by the Democrats so that Obama will win the Election? Where I live in NC there is NO trouble getting any loans, my daughter just got a loan to buy a house, my neighbor just bought a car, no problem. My brother in Washington State said the same thing…no problem. Remember that Harry Reid claimed two weeks ago a complete catastrophic disaster on Friday last week…didn’t happen and in fact the stock market went back up. With all the rhetoric coming from Nancy and Harry Reid is driving the disaster? Might this be the biggest highjack in America….Obama says we are “lost” we need to decline…less food, less driving, less everything to get in line with the rest of the world.

It’s obvious to me that Obama supporters are so BLIND. They can’t see this wolf in front of them.
1. First, MOBILIZE ACORN in your face voter (FRAUD) registration (DEAD or ALIVE or multiple Person accepted) to try to “STEAL” the votes early. Their motto:”Vote, Vote EARLY, Vote OFTEN, Vote AGAIN!” That’s why there are investigations on-going in several states.
2. BRAIN-WASH the litle ones, one by one. Have you seen the Video “Children for OBAMA” It reminds me of Hitler’s Youth.
3. BRIBE, PROVIDE, and SUBSIDIZE voters with Gas Cards, Restaurants, and whatever can entice the voters to go to the POLLS and vote for HIM.
It’s a SAD day when REAL/TRUE/PATRIOTIC American would not be able to see this “CON” man act.
It’s the ECONOMY. It’s REPS faults, It’s REPS in the majority for 6 years.
Well, Have you FOUND the ROOT causes?
I am OLD enough to refresh your memory about this current Financial Crisis.
It started in Carter Adm. under the Community Reinvestment Act or CRA. Remembered how Carter was doing with this thing called Habitat for Humanity (it’s a GOOD idea since it’s FREE).
Clinton Adm. just re-inforced it so Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were FREE to roam under the watch of Mr. Raines.
When Bush attemped to “regulate” it, the Dems in charge (Frank, Meeks, Waters, et al.) protested and said that these GSEs are sounded and stable.
Then came along McCain tried to do the SAME, it also blocked by the DEMS.
When things crumbled, all the fingers were ready to point at Bush, then McCain.
Sure, They are part of the BLAME for NOT standing up to these DEMS. Remembered that DEMs are in the Majority, any attempt to reintroduce legislation would be useless.
Obama has NO CLUE on Economic or anything for that matter. He is “supposedly” a Constitutional Liar (Lawyer).
So, when this crisis happened. He and DEM. Leaderships (if you want to call it) have no f— clue how to solve it.
Poor Reid, “I’m calling on Reps. candidate to tell us WHAT to do.”
Pelosi promised the “ETHICAL” Congress, right? She paid her husband without performing any work. Nice to know that she is ETHICAL.
If you want these people to run our country, be my guest. Just remember this, when it f— up, it will take 15 years to restore to its forefathers conditions.

Paige, I meant no offense to anyone, other than the fact that I am worried for the future of our country.
If I offended, I apologize. Some people can admit when they are wrong, or went over the top…I can, and I apologize.
However…take the time to read this, and ask yourself why this isn’t on the front page of every msm site.
http://www.newsmax.com/timmerman/Obama_fundraising_illegal/2008/09/29/135718.html
Now tell me this doesn’t bother you just a bit. And this article is but one of many issues that have come up, that the msm’s have NOT covered. Now ask yourself why? IT’s news isn’t it? More so than Whoopie disagreeing with Elizabeth.

I’m more bothered by people who find one or two extremely obscure partisan “news” stories and base their votes on them because it provides convenient cover for their prejudices.

Posted by: David | October 2, 2008, 1:38 pm 1:38 pm

the msm’s are all partisan!

David, you are right on.

Posted by: Daisy | October 2, 2008, 1:45 pm 1:45 pm

I would love to know why some don’t see what’s clearly visible to almost half of this country, as to the biased reporting done by the msm’s.
Why was it so much more important to drag a 17 year old girl thru the mud over being pregnant, than it was to raise an awareness over John Edwards affair?
Why was it so important for a mass of reporters to swoop down on a small town in Alaska digging up dirt on Sarah, when there was , and still is dirt being dug up, yet hidden right there in D.C?
Just amazing! Prejudiced? EVERYONE has theirs. Even Obama! I don’t sit in church and listen to black hate. I embrace all in my faithful community, and beyond.
I wouldn’t throw my grandmother under the bus, and I wouldn’t listen to a reverand if that’s all he did was spew racial hate toward others. And he/she certainly wouldn’t be marrying me, or baptizing my children.

Posted by: Jeanie | October 2, 2008, 1:48 pm 1:48 pm

I find it interesting that Voter in America so succinctly (and correctly in my estimation) stated the case for McCain. It seems to be more typical of McCain supporters to use facts whereas Obama supporters tend to focus on making fun of Republicans as opposed to stating facts on HOW Obama will bring about such dramatic change.

Posted by: Crewmom3 | October 2, 2008, 1:57 pm 1:57 pm

Biased reporting is a matter of perspective, Jeanie. It is by definition. One man’s bias is another man’s “fair and balanced.”
It wasn’t important to drag a 17 year old through the mud, it was news. If John Edwards had won the nomination or had been named as the VP candidate, the affair would have been news too. That being said, I agree that it is a sad day when the National Enquirer has to break a story like that but your comparison of the two misses the point. Republicans are certainly no strangers to their own sex scandals and unintended pregnancies.
The reasons that the Bristol Palin thing is otherwise newsworthy are numerous:
1) Palin, as the darling of the Conservative Christian Right, has positioned herself as one of those small-town, folksy people who are “real” Americans – the kind that have morals and values and who don’t do drugs or drink too much or have premarital sex like the rest of the hedonistic people who live in big cities and metropolitan areas. The dismissal of anyone who mentions the pregnancy of her daughter is blatantly and patently hypocritical and disingenuous. Imagine if Barak Obama’s daughter was 17 and she got pregnant during the campaign. And then she brought her gangsta’ (as opposed to “redneck”) boyfriend with her to the convention. YOu think the same people who are rushing to Bristol’s defense would be rushing to little Ms Obama’s?
2) Palin is the poster-person for the Christian right’s philosophy on sex education (abstinence only). The unintended out of wedlock pregnancy of one’s own daughter is relevant in an unbiased look into the merits and demerits of such a policy.
3) Palin is adamantly pro-life. In her view, there is no choice to be made. A human life is at stake, and the characterization of something like that as a choice is offensive. Then she goes out bragging about how proud she is of her daughter making the right “choice.” Again, relevant.
I could go on.

This election has certainly been an eye-opener for me with regards to the reporting and interviews of the candidates by the national media.
Charlie Gibson and Katie Couric have both veered WAY off of neutral territory in their mode of interviewing the candidates.
On GMA, the angst heard and mentioned by a Senator interviewed by Chris Cuomo brought his views to light. I was also disheartened by Diane Sawyer’s almost braying when speaking of Sarah Palin in the GMA 7:50 couch chat.
What happened to objectivity in the news?

Posted by: Crewmom3 | October 2, 2008, 2:09 pm 2:09 pm

Voter in America,
Thats a nice story and all, but you’re leaving out signficant portions. You’re right – it is largely the democrats fault for the Fannie and Freddie mess. But that is only a small part of the overall crisis that exists. Like, for example, the 1999 deregulation of the banking industry spearheaded by Phil Gramm and supported by your boy McCain. That legislation is what most economists look back at as the beginning of the mess that we’re all currently in.
Also, what in the last year of the election – or 26 years of his career in washington – gives you the impression that John McCain has even a clue about how the financial systems work or how to lead in the context of the economy. Was it him personally saying that the economy is certainly not his strong suit and he doesnt really understand it? Did that do it for ya’? Or maybe its Palin who has the requisite command and understanding of the largest economy in the history of humankind. “See the bailout is really about healthcare reform…and jobs…and trade…and jobs…and tax cuts…and gotta’ cut spending.”
Sen. Obama, whether you agree with his political outlook or not, is an undeniably intelligent person who I personally trust more to handle issues as complex as our economy.
There are plenty of those who disagree with me, and to each their own. But to dismiss Obama as having “no clue” is ludicrous, especially when the republican ticket consists of a man who finished 894/899 in his class at the Academy and has professed his lack of understanding of the economy over the years. Oh, and the (R) VP candidate took 6 years at 5 different colleges to get a bachelors degree in journalism. Which would be fine, except that every time she opens her mouth she reminds everyone of how “dangerously unqualified” she really is.
Me? I’m taking a shot every time Biden says he takes the train back from DC every night and I’m swigging from my beer every time Palin dodges a question with a “well, ya’ know..”
I’m gonna be drunk.

Posted by: Joe | October 2, 2008, 2:21 pm 2:21 pm

Are you serious, Mike? Charlie Gibson asked Palin her stance on the Bush Doctrine…why was that mean? Bush is the current Republican she’s hoping to replace. She is for ridding the world of Islamic terrorists…and she doesn’t know what the Bush Doctrine is. That’s bad. That makes her look really bad. Katie Couric asked her to name a newspaper – ANY NEWSPAPER!!! And Palin couldn’t name one? Palin chose to make fun of Biden – “I’ve been hearin’ his speeches since I was, like, in second grade!” THAT’S rude and grammatically lazy. Why do we want “an average Joe six-pack” in office? I want someone who is brilliant. And I really want someone who’s had a passport for more than a year! Anyone who has traveled outside of the US has learned from it, has been humbled by differences and similarities across humanity. Mike, the reason the media is focusing so intently on Palin is that she came out of NOWHERE and we have a month left to decide who she is…and she is not making a very good impression on most of us. She is sarcastic, and we are sarcastic right back.

We still dont know who Obama realy is. We dont even know for sure if he is an American citizen. And he is telling his supporters to get into the faces of people who is not supporting him, and terrorize them. How can the American people trust this guy to be a commender in cheif?

Posted by: Jack | October 2, 2008, 4:13 pm 4:13 pm

Jack, take a deep breath. Barack Obama cannot run for the office of President unless he is an American citizen. Who told you that he is telling people to “terrorize” non-supporters? That’s just stupid. I would gently suggest you not vote unless you have educated yourself. Try reading newspapers…I’m sure Sarah Palin can recommend one or two!

Anyone drinking a shot every time Gov. Palin actually answered a question, would be stone cold sober at the end of the debate.
Palin didn’t answer the questions at all, she gave set speeches, frequently completely unrelated to the subject under discussion.
Of course, that was Palin’s intention. She said as much herself “I’ll answer the question the moderator puts to me or not, however I please”. !!!
So, we now know about Sarah Palin after the debate what we already knew going into it:
1. Sarah Palin can give great speeches
2. Sarah Palin cannot or will not answer direct questions.

Posted by: m@chiavelli | October 2, 2008, 7:34 pm 7:34 pm

Drink every time Palin says “Americans” as in “Americans want this” or “I’m telling Americans that.” Drink every time she says “Darn right!” or “Heck yeah!” And drink every time she mentions a team sport like hockey or soccer.
For Biden, a shot each time he says “excuse me” and corrects himself to say the exact opposite of whatever word just left his mouth…

Obama wants a trillion dollars of new Federal programs. Then with a striaght face says he wont raise taxes. Can someone explain this?
Why does Obama want to be president? Look at the people that helped him become a serious candidate. This concerms me.I do not believe that he really has our interest in heart. He wants the power to take your money and give it to the people he wants to help and that is not you and me. Obama is a great talker and will proabably be elected president. However, I would prefer to hire a President that has accomplished something of substance instead of just telling people what they want to hear.
I hope that I am wrong, but I am very concerned about the increase in government control of my decisions and increased spending of our money. This will definately make the US less competitive on the world markets and this will cost American jobs.
If we elect Obama, I suspect we will have to put up with Federal regulations on getting medical care. Regulations written by the same bureaucrats that have put together the tax code.

Posted by: hardworking | October 3, 2008, 1:47 pm 1:47 pm

Whether you are for Obama or McCain, I believe that we need to push for two vital changes.
1. Give the President line item veto power. We must control the wasteful pork spending of both the Republicans and Democrats.
2. Change to a “loser pays” legal system. The US is the only country that does not have a “loser pays” system. High medical costs, export of jobs overseas and a hidden tax on everything we do is made worse by out of control legal costs. “Loser pays” would reduce abuses of the legal system while allowing for legitimate law suites.
Whoever you support, please encourage them to support the above 2 fundamental changes.

OBAMA IS THE “GOLDEN BOY” SELECTED BY THE DNC AND BIASED MEDIA.
I watched the debate between Governor Palin (5 weeks of national debate experience) versus Senator Biden (35 years of national debate experience).
Obviously, she is a quick study. Just imagine what she will be like after four years as vice president! She has been a Mayor and a Governor. She is more qualified than anyone running.
John McCain showed great judgment in choosing her.
It’s too bad the DNC and biased media didn’t “select” Biden or Hillary. OBAMA HAS BASED HIS ENTIRE CAMPAIGN ON LIES. HE HAS TOO MANY TIES TO TERRORISTS AND ANTI-AMERICANS. DON’T FORGET “God Damn America” JEREMIAH WRIGHT, PFLEGER, FARRAKHAN, AYERS, REZKO (TO NAME A FEW). BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA IS A DANGER TO OUR COUNTRY. Obama’s ties to organizations like “ACORN” caused much of the country’s mortgage foreclosure issues. ACORN IS UNDER INVESTIGATION FOR “VOTER FRAUD” IN MANY STATES! Obama is a wolf in sheep’s clothing.
I’m voting for the Honorable John McCain in November.
STOP THE DRAMA – NO OBAMA!
GET A BRAIN – VOTE McCAIN!
