Hear What a “Focus Group” of Battleground Voters Has to Say
Senior producer Tom Nagorski blogs from the World News bus today in Ohio:
In the newsroom some of us refer fondly to our "focus group of one" — meaning, a loved one who serves as sounding board for opinion of all kinds. Out on the road, a "focus group" can be a handful of people gathered just about anywhere, and while it’s never scientific, it’s always helpful.
Here in Ohio, we’ve met with a foursome of GM workers in Dayton, a table-full of diners at the Upper Deck Tavern in Moraine, and — just now — with the morning crowd at the Cloud Nine Café in Wapakoneta. Wapakoneta is the birthplace of the astronaut Neal Armstrong and it’s solid McCain territory; Auglaize County ran nearly 3-1 for Bush in 2000 and again in 2004. At the Cloud Nine Café, we found a quartet of small business owners, eager to talk.
Ellie Archer, 62, is solidly for McCain during what she calls a "perfect storm" of economic trouble. "We need someone with experience," she said. Alan Davis, a 40-something father of three, said he fears "big government" and is convinced that’s what an Obama administration would bring. "I’m solid McCain," he told us. Vanessa Lee, 37, drew a long sigh when asked about her choice. "Do I have to tell you today?" she asked, laughing. She’s a student of the issues who hates the political ads, and she has never voted democratic. "This time I might," she said. She likes Obama’s health-care plan. Then there was Dennis Borgert, who runs a bowling alley and says his vote has shifted day to day. "I can tell you what I don’t like," Borgert said firmly. "I don’t like when one of them gets up on TV and just insults the other. That’s not what we need to hear right now." Was today a McCain or Obama day, we asked. "Obama," he said. Tomorrow? He couldn’t say.
Just one "focus group". Just four of the 33,590 registered voters in Auglaize County. Next stop, Bowling Green…

Do the math, if 3 out of 4 becomes 2 out of 4, Obama picks up votes. Sounds like you have a solid 2 at the moment.

It’s funny. We no longer hear this race is a “toss-up”.
The Reasoning behind Obama’s BIG shift in the polls are Democrats are coming home and Indepedents are shifting in his direction.

Oh yea, and reporting live from the urban enclaves of Brooklyn, Philly, Los Angeles, Miami and Houston, just to name a few, we’ve taken a poll and most people we interviewed were critical thinking educated individuals and their question was, HOW COULD YOU NOT KNOW WHO YOU’RE VOTING FOR?
TWP’s……..So gullible. You can sell em a fish market at Sea World.

“Smiling faces, sometimes, pretend to be your friend. Smiling faces, show no traces, of the evil that lurks within. Smiling faces, smiling faces sometimes, they don’t tell the truth” [O'Jays]. This, my friends, is the unofficial Obama campaign theme song.

NC was moved to tossup from leaning McCain.

- let me put my personal opinions aside-
can we PLEASE stop giving so much press to these “focus groups” I do not care which way they point – pro Obama / pro McCain – focus groups of 5-10-15 people are not valid measurement tools – no statistical validity – and because of the group dynamic nature of focus groups, they can produce so really weird results. They are good for broad general perceptions & trends — but you watch, tonight some fools will find a focus group of 10 people that leans 6 to 4 and those fools will call it a 20% margin of victory. Again – does not matter which side gets favored – I hate there stupid focus groups.

McCain plan includes Medicare/Medicaid massive cuts.
McCain would pay for his health plan with major reductions to Medicare and Medicaid, a top aide said, in a move that independent analysts estimate could result in cuts of $1.3 trillion over 10 years to the government programs.
He wants to phase out these government programs and phase in “tax credits” for consumers to buy their own health plans.
uhmmm… don’t we have to pay all the taxes on that, and really, what will $5,000 get me a year????
Smart people would not vote for McCain/Palin they are empty suites with empty ideas.

Ahh but the republicans CREATE jobs. REgan once said “The best economic program for Americans is a JOB”. My employer is rich, but they worked very hard and diligently to get where they are and I am grateful to be working for them. I dont hate them for their wealth, but I know that if I put forth a 200% effort, I could become independently wealthy myself and it would really suck if the government came along and taxed my success to death!!!
Posted by: albensmom | October 7, 2008, 12:41 pm 12:41 pm
albensmom: I agree totally that is why you should do a fact search on McCain and his friends…very very scary. Example one:
“John McCain sat on the board of…the U.S. Council for World Freedom,” said Begala, “The Anti-Defamation League, in 1981 when McCain was on the board, said this about this organization. It was affiliated with the World Anti-Communist League – the parent organization – which ADL said ‘has increasingly become a gathering place, a forum, a point of contact for extremists, racists and anti-Semites.’”
But McCain’s involvement in the U.S. Council for World Freedom, which extended from 1981 through, possibly, 1986 is significant — not merely because it ties him to unsavory characters but because it firmly associates him with a foreign policy that was, at the time and still, controversial.
Example two:
Sarah Palin association’s with the radical Alaska Independence Party that wants to secede from this great country, the United States of America.
And here is a quote from Alaskan Independence Party founder Joe Voegler:
“The fires of Hell are frozen glaciers compared to my hatred for the American government, and I won’t be buried under their damn flag!”
I wonder how Palin explains her husband”s verified membership in the “ALASKIAN INDEPENDENCE PARTY?” Seems she doesn”t believe in the UNITED States of America, does she??

McCain is desparate, and it shows. Palin is ignorant, and it shows even more. Now that McCain’s lost his free pass from the media, all of his unpleasant and corrupt associations are beginning to come out, and yes, at least in this,he is the far more experienced candidate.
This country’s been run by one small segment of the electorate bullying the rest for too long. The rule of the neo-cons is a failure and McCain is taking the ship down with him in these last desperate days.

It makes me laugh how democrats’ defense is always “hate”. Hate hate hate. Nope. Its you guys who hate. Obviously, you have a candidate with ties and allegiances to questionable groups and individuals, yet you deny and/or defend. How could you? Democrats could care less about the country, the troops, the economy or health care. THEY DONT CARE!! They talk the talk, but never walk the walk. Anything to get a democrat elected! John McCain is a great man, a hero. This man LOVES his country, LOVES the troops and wants nothing more than the economy to thrive but democrats dont care about that. They’re nothing but Storm Troopers in a Death Star world.

Redemption is only valid if you

looking.
Obama only exchanged some of his
friends. Those friends only exchanged

What do democrats now say about

B. Obama backed up B. Frank.
IT IS ABOUT THE ECONOMY.

Obama bombed as a Community Organizer.

I believe that Justice will not be
denied. I believe that Justice is slow
- very slow at times-
I believe in redemption. However,
redemption is when someone changes
their ways – not ONLY their
profession.
Obama’s ways have not changed from the
‘old days’. He squandered the money he
was in charge of when he was in CAC.
His friends back in the days of CAC
did strong-arm bankers into giving loans
that eventually bombed.
Just follow the timeline. It all leads
to Obama’s actions in the senate.
Obama backed up Barney Frank.
Even Pres. Bill Clinton blames B. Frank
for today’s economy. (check it out).
Alec Baldwin (of all people) blames
the democrats for today’s economy -
Alec was on Bill Mayer’s show(Mayer
looked as if acid rain was pouring on him when Alec was speaking.)
The Post blames the democrats (esp.
B.Frank).
JUST FOLLOW THE TIMELINE.
EVERYBODY IS NOW ON SHAKY GROUND.

I have an associate degree, make over 100K, have a family, and am a decidedly independent white male. I believe that along with the opportunity this country gives every citizen to become successful, there is an underlying obligation to give some of this success back the the community who enabled you, to the less fortunate, and to the under-educated. I do not believe that the Republican philosophy shares these values, which, by the way, are supported in my Christian faith.
I will vote for Obama for the following reasons:
The Declaration of Independence states that “all men are created equal” and endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, among them life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. How can you have any of these without the right to affordable health care, and if you cannot afford it, free health care
MLK Jr said “I have a dream” in which people are not judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. I believe that Barak Obama has that character.
While some complain about the Obama rhetoric, I find that I would rather have a leader who inspires me than one who claims to know how to lead but whose campaign descends into the gutter of attack politics when he is behind.
I look for someone who is a quick study, and not one who, and I truly believe this, will follow the same failed policies of the last 8 years
I look for someone who has a well balanced ticket, and not one with an unqualified VP pick. I don’t want “Joe 6-pack”, I want someone better than this. I want someone who is educated, well spoken, and can get on that international stage without embarrassing me.

They turned to the Democratic party because the Republican party no longer possesses those values…they seem to be only concerned with what is in it for them, not the greater good
Posted by: TEB | October 7, 2008, 2:37 pm 2:37 pm
TEB, God bless you…while I agree that those more fortunate should give back to their community, I DO NOT agree with the government telling me who I should give it to! If I made over 100k, I’d give back too but it would be MY CHOICE. The government does nothing but encourage and support the poor to remain that way. If you are okay with government dictating where your tax dollars go, than you go ahead and vote democratic.

Oh but your wrong, TEB. Isnt having a job for the greater good? Or sittin on ones fat lazy behind collecting a federal check? A federal check that we, the tax payer, fund. How is taxing & spending for the greater good? For programs I dont agree with? How is that for the greater good? I like to have a say in where my money goes. dont you?

Potential spam? Now I’m spamming? I guess the Obama handlers/bloggers cant handle the truth so my blogs are now potential spam. I thought this was a blog forum. HAH. Its okay. I’ve got other things to do anyway. McCain/Palin will prevail. You democrats are getting all revved up for nothing. As long as it makes you happy.

Again with the “Chicago Style A– Kicking”.
What a bore! Or is that boar?
You’ll need a BOAR to stop
John McCain and the Republicans -
We call it “telling the truth” -
Reagan Style.

John McCain couldn’t tell the truth if his life depended on it…

No matter who is elected (and we are all entitled to our own opinion and vote for whatever reason we decide), my hope is that we (as a country) will find some way of working together to change the direction of this country, the war, and the economy. May God, Allah, Jaweh, or any other name you have for the creator/universal consiousness in your belief system watch out for us all.

Well said, TEB. Democrats are not all bad. I like Hillary, I just wish she were a bit more fiscally conservative =] I wouldnt vote for her, but I could live with her as president. If Obama wins, we’ll all HAVE to live with him as president but I’m telling you, he will be watched verrrrrrry closely and if he screws up by continuing his allegiance with these unethical, questionable characters, he will be out of there before you can say TRAITOR. PROVIDED he wins, which I dont believe he’s going to.

why is it only the rightwingers refer to obama as the messiah???? i’ve never heard anyone on the left refer to him as that.
oh yeah. i forgot the old republican tactic: misstate your opponents position and then attack that misstatement.

“I used to live in Chicago. It seems like such a corrupt city,”

John McCain must be scared. Why else would he admit he would attack Obama’s character and stop talking about what matters most in America? It seems to me that McCain is avoiding the issues because he knows

Albensmom: I make 6 figures. I work every day. I volunteer, go to church and have been teaching my children that they are very fortunate to live like they do. I also teach them to give back to the community and help those less fortunate to help themsevles. I’ve taught them that no one owes them anything, including me. I teach them toleration, honesty, fairness and to look at people’s deeds, not just their words. I’ve taught them just because someone smiles, winks, and pretends to be their friend, it doesn’t make it so. Guess what? I’m not voting McCain.

The counrty is coming apart at the seams and we need to hear issues not personal attack and ads. Issues, Issues and more Issues.

If Obama doesn’t win it’s because there has been another “rigging” at the polls – no pun intended!

Like Ayers said, “Guilty as hell
free as a bird America is a great
country”
ACORN was raided today
by the FBI
Sometimes, just sometimes, justice
comes home to roost
I know that ACORN and Obama will
be glad for an investigation -
because they don’t have anything
to hide? Right?

I am a minority and a naturalized citizen. This is a great country and it became great because of its moral values. The migrants come to this country looking forward to raise their families, work hard and fulfill the American dream. Barak has only words and no way he would fulfil what he says. I believe in McCain/Palin, who can make the country attractive to the whole world. There are lots of minorities who support McCain. They are silent voters. Polls may not include them.
