Obama Clarifies Social Security Tax Stance
ABC News’ Teddy Davis and Arnab Datta report: Barack Obama’s top economic adviser clarified the Illinois senator’s Social Security tax stance Thursday, one day after the Democratic presidential nominee made ambiguous comments on the subject to ABC News’ Charlie Gibson.
During his Wednesday interview, Obama said the best approach on Social Security is "raising the cap on the payroll tax, keeping the tax rate the same, but saying, you know, somebody like myself or Warren Buffet can afford to pay a little more in payroll tax to make sure the system is solvent."
The comment left anti-tax advocates scratching their heads, wondering if Obama wanted to apply the current 12.4 percent tax rate to all income.
"No way that’s what he meant," Obama adviser Jason Furman told ABC News. "I would interpret that as referring to most people."
"For most people, the rate would be the same," he added.
At present, the 12.4 percent Social Security payroll tax is only applied to the first $102,000 of income.
Back in 2007, Obama wrote an op-ed for an Iowa newspaper in which he floated the possibility of applying the 12.4 percent tax rate to all income.
He did not, however, formally endorse that concept.
Obama’s plan, as confirmed by Furman, remains to impose a new 2-4 percent Social Security payroll tax on income above $250,000 per year starting 10 years from now. Furman joined Obama adviser Austan Goolsbee to outline the plan in an Aug. 14 op-ed in the Wall Street Journal.
Obama has not yet decided if upper income beneficiaries paying the new tax would see a corresponding rise in benefits.

Tax and spend… remember that. Obama = more taxes. He hasn’t really decided which statement he’ll stick to yet. First, he’s got to find a way to craw into the WH and then he’ll steal your money. Then he’ll find a way to explain away his association with terrorists, and those who hate this country.

Why don’t we see anything about voter frraud by ACORN and Obama’s ties to ACORN on the main-stream media? Why do we have to tune in to Fox to get unbiased media coverage? If McCain gave $800,000 to an organization that registers dead people to vote, wouldn’t it make the national news?

could the Political Radar be any more in the tank for Barack Obama? Obama is being dishonest with us. He lists the pros and cons of both sides of an issue and claims bipartisanship, and when the issue has run its course, he claims to have been on the right side of history and all those who really had the courage to take a position against the one proven correct is inept. He is being dishonest with his relationship with Bill Ayers. I couldn’t care less if Ayers was a loser terrorist. I don’t like how Obama served on an education reform bill with Bill Ayers, and Bill Ayers to this day praises Hugo Chavez’s Communistic revolutionary socialist education system (http://billayers.wordpress.com/2006/11/07/world-education-forum), and Barack Obama refuses to talk about it.

I want clarification on why
Wachovia Corp., a once-thriving financial giant now teetering on the brink of collapse, confirmed today that it was extending an $8 million loan to the cash-strapped National Republican Congressional Committee for last-minute activites to support GOP House candidates.
Middle Class America can’t get loans, Wachovia investors lost millions and their bail-out came at tax payer expense.
ANSWERS ARE NEEDED NOW!

From the standpoint of the “media” it appears that Barack Obama will be the next President and has anyone noticed that the Stock Market is plummeting, sinking into the abyss. The people (and it does not take an economist) know that the Obama tax and redistribution policies will destroy jobs, wages, stocks in retirement accounts. Obama’s polices will make economic conditions in America much worse and this is clear and they are beginning to remove their money as Obama pulls ahead in the polls. It’s over for America with Obama at the helm.

You people that are worried about if Obama will raise taxes seemed to have forgotten the times we were in when the first Bush took office. We were no where near what we are experiencing today……Do you rememeber him saying “read my lips…no new taxes”? He did it anyway, his hands were tied. If you dont think this crisis we are in means there will be more taxes with either canidate you are seriously living in la la land. Not to mention in the next few years taxes will be the least of all of our problems!

pay tax while working and again when they start drawing social security. Otherwise they are double taxed.

For starters, Obama paid ACORN, which has endorsed him for president, $800,000 to register new voters, payments his campaign failed to accurately report. (They were disguised in his FEC disclosure as payments to a front group called Citizen Services Inc. for “advance work.”)
What’s more, Obama worked as executive director of ACORN’s voter-registration arm, Project Vote, in 1992. Joined by two other community organizers on Chicago’s South Side, Obama conducted the voter-registration drive that helped elect Carol Moseley-Braun to the Senate that year.
The next year, 1993, Obama joined the civil-rights law firm Davis Miner Barnhill & Galland, where he sued the state of Illinois on behalf of ACORN to implement the federal “Motor Voter” law, which the GOP governor at the time refused to do. Then-Gov. Jim Edgar argued, presciently, that the Clinton law would invite voter fraud.
Obama downplays his ties to ACORN, and his campaign denies coordinating with ACORN to register voters.
Posted by: sorenhawk | October 9, 2008, 1:52 pm 1:52 pm
Barack Obama had very close ties to ACORN and in particular to the head of Chicago ACORN. Her name was Madeleine Talbot. Madeleine Talbot was an absolute pioneer of these intimidation tactics against banks, and Barack Obama was selected by Madeleine Talbot when he was just sort of a wet behind the ears organizer, she recognized his abilities, and she asked him to train her personal staff. When he came back to Chicago from law school and Madeleine Talbot was really beginning her campaign against these banks, Barack Obama trained the leadership of organizers in ACORN in Chicago.

Obama/Biden vs McCain/Palin, what if things were switched around?…..think about it.
Would the country’s collective point of view be different?
Ponder the following:
What if the Obamas had paraded five children across the stage, including
a three month old infant and an unwed, pregnant teenage daughter?
What if John McCain was a former president of the Harvard Law Review?
What if Barack Obama finished fifth from the bottom of his graduating class?
What if McCain had only married once, and Obama was a divorcee?
What if Obama was the candidate who left his first wife after a severe
disfiguring car accident, when she no longer measured up to his standards?
What if Obama had met his second wife in a bar and had a long affair while
he was still married?
What if Michelle Obama was the wife who not only became addicted to pain
killers but also acquired them illegally through her charitable organization?
What if Cindy McCain graduated from Harvard?
What if Obama had been a member of the Keating Five?
(The Keating Five were five United States Se nators accused of corruption
in 1989, igniting a major political scandal as part of the larger Savings
and Loan crisis of the late 1980s and early 1990s.)
What if McCain was a charismatic, eloquent speaker?
What if Obama couldn’t read from a teleprompter?
What if Obama was the one who had military experience that included
disc ipline problems and a record of crashing seven planes?
What if Obama was the one who was known to display publicly, on many
occasions, a serious anger management problem?
What if Michelle Obama’s family had made their money from beer distribution?
What if the Obamas had adopted a white child?
You could easily add to this list. If these questions reflected reality,
do you really believe the election numbers would b e as close as they are?
This is what racism does. It covers up, rationalizes and minimizes
positive qua lities in one candidate and emphasizes negative qualities in
another when there is a color difference.

JOHN MCCAIN’S PLAN:
Have some workers DIVERT some or all of their Social Security contributions to private accounts, in the stock market, bringing Social Security into technical default SOONER.
And if the market should happen to lose 20 or 30% of its value just before these people retire, THEN WE GET TO BAIL THEM OUT TOO!
BARACK OBAMA’s PLAN:
Background:
Social Security is know as a ‘regressive’ tax, because the effective tax rate is 12.5% for people making less than $102,000. People who make $1,000,000 a year pay an effective tax rate of just 1.3% !!!
Proposal:
People making more than $250,000 pay 3% on income over $250,000.

The FICA (Soc Sec Tax) is regressive, too high, and unfairly applied – especially for the self-employed. After I work out my income from self-employment (gross-income less bus costs and expenses), I pay the 12.4% on all of that. Then they give me a deduction – not a credit – for the 1/2 which would have been paid by an employer who’s not me if there were one. If the rest of my income and personal exemptions, expenses, etc., reduce my net income to low or now tax territory, i still have to pay the payroll tax. And, if I continue this nonsense after drawing on Soc Sec, I still have to pay the tax while I’m drawing from the Soc Sec funds. Meanwhile, the SSA has to track all of this and spend people time and money getting my share to me. This is wacko. The better thing to do would be to drop the fica altogether and finance SocSec out of the general fund. The current financial system meltdown shows why privatizing SS would be a disasterous idea. Medicare merits another and much longer discussion about medical costs. When I review the increases in cost of medical services over the past 4 decades, I conclude that Henry VIII was correct – we should hang all the lawyers. Litigation penalties and costs, and Insurance costs have driven the cost of medical care to the breaking point. It’s a mess. Help wanted!

If Obama can save social security, we all have to be sure to vote for him! Our citizens are going to NEED it since few of us have pensions any more. We also NEED to save medicare because I don’t think we’re going to have enough money to do any kind of grand healthcare for all plan right away.
Vote for the candidate who will save social security. In the debate, McCain said that future retirees will not have the same benefits as current retirees. I say NO NO NO to that.
We’re paying into social security. We earned it and we’re going to NEED it!!

Is it not a requirement that the Federal Election Board request an original BC that would include the name of the hospital..time..date of birth..all of which are in question..I don’t believe the Judge has ruled as of yet..Anyway..Obama’s Kenya grandmother insists he was born in Kenya as well as other close relatives…Shouldn’t the matter be settled to relieve any doubt??? I AM NOW VERY CURIOUS AS THIS IS THE FIRST I HAVE HEARD OF THIS…

If Senator Obama is elected, he will be be placing higher taxes on the very sources that create new jobs and improves our ecomony. Meanwhile, he will give every person free health care and send billions to overseas poor countries. Obama is not for the average American family. He simply wants to move money assets from very responsible people to the irresponsible people. HE IS A TRUE SOCIALIST.

Law pausing foreclosures.
What do your experts think of this idea.? Could Congress pass a law that would stop and prevent all foreclosures on homes for at least 1 year (or maybe a few more) if the borrower paid at least 6% interest on the loan balance (plus taxes and insurance)? Here is what it could do. It should apply to all residential loans made, owned or serviced by any federally regulated financial institution. With the prime rate at 4.5% a 6% return is fair and much better than nothing. It should slow dramatically the number of foreclosed homes being added to an already flooded market. It will allow homeowners to make reasonable payments for at least a year or more. It will allow Congress to revisit the interest rate at the sunset date of the law. It would apply only to ARM loans made during a certain window, say January 1, 2001 through July 2008. This should not cost us taxpayers anything. This will modify loans that cannot be modified now because they are in large pools of investments owned by many investors. For those homeowners that bought way more than they can afford even at 6%, sorry but this won’t help you. This will give the residential market some time to stabilize and hopefully start increasing in value again. Granted this does not solve the long term problem of what to do with these loans in the future, but it might help our current crisis and give us more time to look for long term solutions.

Good for you Davis i agree with a lot of what is said but I will go a step further, if this country wants to get back on track it is going to have to stop the war, raise taxes to get out of debt to foreign countries, you know these countries will want their money back if you want better education pay for it, if you want better protection pay for it , if you want want want pay for it. You can’t keep taking at some point you hve to give back.

Obama has the right direction on taxes.. modest increases for the wealthy, yet not as much as Clinton. Obama has a brilliant health plan, creating in essence an insurance company that will provide affordable and portable insurance for more americans. Obama has gone out of his way to provide specifics and details, while McCain continues to speak in generalities regarding spending cuts and earmarks.
When Clinton took office, the republicans were calling for the end of our country by calling his tax plan ‘radical’ and a sure fire depression waiting to happen. I don’t remember that hapening exactly the way the did.. and now they are saying the same thing about Obama.

Obama and his cohorts make many blunders, and then with the willing help of the media gets to ‘clarify’ and correct these missteps. You guys in favor of taxes will get what you wish for. Let’s see if you can tax your way into prosperity.
Corporations will pass their taxes on to you in the form of higher prices, production cuts, and layoffs. Very wealthy individuals will seek asylum in tax friendly countries. Democrats (Rep. George Miller) today proposed taxing 401K’s. Be careful what you wish for, and who you vote for.

If republicans are so afraid of taxes then why arent they talking about John McCains 300 billion dollar ‘bailout’ to buy mortgages at FACE VALUE from crooked savings & loans/banks? At face value when the treasury can already do the same but for market value? John McCain is an idiot.
Who pays for it? The tax payers.

Way to go Davis give them the old 1 2 .. we need more people that understand that in some cases what you don’t like works best. No one wants to pay taxes I have to pay my property tax but i do, it pays for things the community needs without looking at the federal government for a hand out.

Question that I would like to be answered. ABC – Political Radar: Please tell us why are you not reporting on the ACORN voter fraud issue that is popping up all over this country?? And the fact that Obama is front and center? I find it interesting that you are ignoring this. You are working for the American people. Do your job for god’s sake.
At least some of the media tells it like it is…I found this article…
For starters, Obama paid ACORN, which has endorsed him for president, $800,000 to register new voters, payments his campaign failed to accurately report. (They were disguised in his FEC disclosure as payments to a front group called Citizen Services Inc. for “advance work.”)
What’s more, Obama worked as executive director of ACORN’s voter-registration arm, Project Vote, in 1992.

lets remeber this. dont vote by skin color but who’s going to do the best job for a country in severe need of help. BARACK HUSSAIN OBAMA recieved his name based on heritage & ethnic background not religion. So why should he change to conform to stereotypical views. lets be smart

And Warren Buffet doesn’t mind a higher capital gains tax. Well this middle class parent who sells stock to pay for my sons college tuition and already pays a 15% tax thinks this is plenty. I don’t even know why Warren Buffet keeps saying this. He knows alot of middle class people own stock. And I don’t beleive for a minute Obama won’t up this on all was elected.

Obama seems to be constantly
“clarifying” or “refining” his positions
on everything from the 2nd amendment to
universal healthcare!
For everyone else it’s known as
flip-flopping but not for the Liberal
Media Candidate, Obama!
He is an empty suit, unaccomplished,
inexperienced media creation.
Considering our current economic
situation electing Barack Obama
president would be like pouring
gasoline on a fire!
Wake up America. John McCain is the
only sane choice for president!

I don’t care for either candidate. However, I would like to know specifically McCain’s health report. His VP is just to inexperienced. This is not a beauty contest its politics. Obama may be the only rational answer.
