Palin: Accessible…And Accessorized?

In short order, Governor Sarah Palin has gone from toughest get to most-accessible of the four members of the two tickets…interviews and brief q-and-a sessions with reporters are almost common now. And today Governor Palin has a new question to answer: Did the Republican Party pay $150,000 to "clothe and accessorize" her and her family, with big-ticket purchases at Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus? Whose money was it? How does this square with her everyday, Joe-The-Plumber appeal? The McCain-Palin campaign says it "does not comment on  strategic decisions", and that in any event the clothing will be given to charity after the election. Here’s the full story.

User Comments

Getting your VP a wardrobe is not a big story. The Obama campaign should stick to the real issues that matter and let McCain continue to shamble around in the weeds.

Well, hope the GOP supporters are happy…If you donated to the McCain campaign; you are dressing Sarah, and probably Todd too! LOL
And here’s the true catch; they will donate it to charity after they are done with it according to them…Which means who will get the clothes? Anyone know the answer to this? People who don’t work, which is what the McCain camp is so upset with Obama for trying to do…The irony is beautiful, and the days are numbered!

Plus, as Jake Tapper stressed, does she know that she has to pay taxes on her 150,000 clothes?

Posted by: heart | October 22, 2008, 10:14 am 10:14 am

The clothes will be given to charity? Oh yeh, I want to be there when they try to pry Palin’s fingers from that stash — and Todd’s and the kids’, too. Give me a break; yeh, I was born yesterday.

Does ABC News really have nothing else to report on? Are you now complaining that she is too accessible? Give me a break. The media is stealing this election for Obama.

Let’s talk about Obama’s clothing. Let’s see, he always wears a white shirt: I guess that is because of Biden’s suggestion that he looked “cleaner” that way. Who designs his jackets and pants? I’ve heard the campaign refuses to release this information. Why? Who’s paying for them? Who bought the spagetti strap dress his daughter inappropriately wore to the convention? Who design’s Michelle’s spandex-loaded dresses?

I wonder how this resonates with all the Joe & Jane sixpacks out there. I doubt any of them can afford to shop at Barneys, Saks, Atlier and what was the name of that high-end baby store? Talk about a waste of money, an infant Trig’s age does not need designer onsies…..

It is an issue given her maveric & Joe the Plumber rhetoric. They want to clean up Washington huh? Does that mean Palin will charge the people for her days at home & for her extensive & expensive wardrobe?
Hard to take them seriously when they speak of being one of ‘us’ when McCain has 7 houses & 13 cars and his running mate can rack up $150,000 in clothing in 1 month!! Those 2 are real mavericks!!!

Posted by: Dee | October 22, 2008, 10:32 am 10:32 am

Posted by: William J. LePetomaine | October 22, 2008, 10:34 am 10:34 am

Well, now that Palin, who doesn’t like the “filter” of the media is more media accessible, here are some questions I hope she gets asked:
1) Why did you record a welcoming statement for a meeting of the Alaska Independence Party – a Secessionist organization? Why was your husband a member of this party for the better part of a decade? Isn’t that, perhaps, a little less than patriotic – to want to secede from your own country?
2) Why did you and your husband work so hard, and so inappropriately, to get a state trooper fired? Was he the only state trooper who had exhibited misconduct? Or was it personal? If it was personal, isn’t that abusing your office?
3) The “troopergate” report stated that you abused your power as governor and violated state ethics laws. Yet right after the report came out you claimed you had been cleared of all “legal and ethical wrongdoing.” Were you confused, or lying?
4) Why don’t you know what the Vice President does, still?
5) Why did you allow women in Wasilla, during your term as Mayor, to pay for their own rape examination kits?
6) When you have had 150,000 dollars spent on you wardrobe and accessories, can you really claim to be a regular hockey mom, or “just like Joe sixpack”? Or does claiming that make you a deplorable hypocrite?
7) Why did Alaska state taxpayers have to pay for your children to travel to events with you, and pay hotel costs, when there was no possible “official” reason for bringing them? Why did you later have expense forms altered? Are you completely unethical and dishonest? Do you really feel that you are this entitled?

The people of Alaska paid for her family trips. The RNC clothes the Palins. Palin is a shill for the super rich and big corporations. Great to see her out there all the time in the last couple weeks of the campaign. She is the face of today’s GOP! They are going to get a serious clobbering on Nov. 4.

Posted by: justme | October 22, 2008, 11:17 am 11:17 am

Is this a story? have you questioned who is paying for Obama and Michelle to stay at the Waldorf Astoria, why aren’t they staying at the Holiday Inn, since they are supposed to be so concerned about the people, The RNC makes it’s money from Donors and the Donors donate that money for them to do whatever they see fit with it. This is a slippery slope, if you want to start looking into what the parties are doing with their donated money, because $600 million is a lot of donated money so are we now going to make Obama Account for every penny. Bring it on MSM, do your damn jobs if you want to go there.

$150,000,000 all less than 200$ donors, means 750,000 people (at least) donated. I don’t believe it. Frauds and going to put the fraud in office. Stolen election, stolen election, stolen election.

Mrs. Palin had DOCUMENTS DOCTORED to cover her purloined trips and hotel expenses for her family on the TAXPAYER’S DIME while governor of Alaska and now she is helping herself to TAXPAYER MONEY for a snazzy wardrobe. And you Palin fans aren’t worried she’ll cash in on your tax dollars if she makes it to the White House? She likes the good life y’all. Think twice. She does not have the scruples needed to be VP of this great country! McCAIN AND PALIN DO NOT SUPPORT THE MIDDLE CLASS!!!

No wonder other countries look at us and have no respect for us, they see a stupid, ignorant group of people, that take pleasure in tearing each other down, a media that is a joke, starting to look secondary to Al-Jezeera. People that are Envious of those who have struggled and pulled themselves up to success, it’s pathetic, this is supposed to be America the land of hopes and dreams, but don’t you dear get to ahead of yourself and be successful or powerful because they will rip you down, and women are the worst no wonder we are behind in everything, we are now the true minority and it’s our own fault because of our catty attitude towards each other, we are a joke to the rest of the world, there are so many other countries that did not hesitate to have women leaders, but we will never have a female vp or President unless she is frumpy, don’t have any style and is looked upon as one of the boys, God forbidd the woman is beautiful, smart and successful, it’s like Crabs in a basket, pull her down, people can’t even commend her for being able to go from City Council to Mayor to Govenor and make good changes in her State, it’s all nasty all the time it’s pathetic. The media is a joke and we will quickly become the laughing stock of the world.

As I watched the stories unfold last nite about Palins charging Alaska for “business” trips for her kids and then the $150,000 for clothes I began to get sick. Then I saw where she again, for the 3rd time explained that the Vice President somehow has a policy role under our constitution.
I am very sad, I wonder how is it that the greatest country on earth could put forth this candidate to possibly be the leader of the free world? How did we fall so far?

Some say Sarah Palin is not ready to be VP or even president. I say to all you naysayers, you are wrong!! In my opinion she has proven herself to be as crooked as any of the old boys club members and should fit perfectly. She will be able to communicate well with the lobbyist and special interest groups as long as there is something in it for her. This lady may know little about world affairs but she is on top when it comes to her place in the economy. Way to go Sarah, take all you can get and leave the rest of us holding the bag.

Posted by: LANNY EDWARDS | October 22, 2008, 11:32 am 11:32 am

Jake, when are you going to report on Mechelle’s poor taste in clothing and how she dresses her daughters in inappropriate clothing. Someone should tell her that her house dresses are not OK, no matter how much she pays for them. And she can put a black bow on them, doesn’t help. Tell her to cover her arms, she looks awkward enough without those long sticks at her side and she needs to exercise with the empty suit and try to get that back down to a size that fits with the rest of her. Just giving some friendly advice, after all she wants to be our (throwup) first female. Can’t say lady and mechelle in the same sentence.

PLEASE, we know you’re in the tank for your favorite Socialist but when you start discussing a lady’s wardrobe, you’ve gone over the top.

Posted by: Ambassador | October 22, 2008, 11:40 am 11:40 am

Here is a fact, like it or not:
The New York Post has retracted their story about the caviar lunch. Seems their “source” got it wrong. They are owned by Rupert Murdoch who owns Fox News.
Here’s the retraction, read it for yourself:
“THE source who told us last week about Michelle Obama getting lobster and caviar delivered to her room at the Waldorf-Astoria must have been under the influence of a mind-altering drug. She was not even staying at the Waldorf. We regret the mistake, and our former source is going to regret it, too. Bread and water would be too good for such disinformation.”
ALL candidates stay at upscale hotels for securtiy reasons. No need to argue the point, that’s the way it should be for both parties.
As long as the tax/payment issues are handled properly, the RNC is free to buy clothes for her if they like.

More power to her. Her governor’s salary does not permit for her to splurge on a well dressed wardrobe. That is a drop in the bucket compared to the amount of money that is used to pay for campaigns…
and I wonder if the media has researched who is paying for Michele Obama’s wardrobe? I doubt it as they work too hard promoting their favorite poster child, Barrack Obama… and look at the work they have had to do to dig up these minor non-issues and try to create major issues out of them.

Trying to hide the real story???
Barack starts his political career with the help of the endorsement of the
New Party:
Marxist political coalition
Active from 1992-1998
Endorsed Barack Obama in 1996 for the Illinois State Senate
this is especially relevant if u watched hannity last night
Co-founded in 1992 by Daniel Cantor (a former staffer for Jesse Jackson’s
1988 presidential campaign) and Joel Rogers (a sociology and law professor
at the University of Wisconsin-Madison), the New Party was a Marxist
political coalition whose objective was to endorse and elect leftist public
officials – most often Democrats. The New Party’s short-term objective was
to move the Democratic Party leftward, thereby setting the stage for the
eventual rise of new Marxist third party.
Most New Party members hailed from the Democratic Socialists of America
and the militant organization ACORN. The party’s Chicago chapter also
included a large contingent from the Committees of Correspondence, a
Marxist coalition of former Maoists, Trotskyists, and Communist Party USA
members.
The New Party’s modus operandi included the political strategy of “electoral
fusion,” where it would nominate, for various political offices, candidates
from other parties (usually Democrats), thereby enabling each of those
candidates to occupy more than one ballot line in the voting booth. By so
doing, the New Party often was able to influence candidates (Fusion of this
type is permitted in seven states — Connecticut, Delaware, Idaho,
Mississippi, New York, South Carolina, and Vermont — but is common only
in New York.)
PUMA!

This is a total non-issue. They sent staffers to buy every pant suit in Palin’s size and every accessory they could find that might work simply to save time. She doesn’t have time to go to department stores to shop for cloths!

The Unshrub: “Why do you always want to blame Obama?”
I gotta say it’s refreshing to be blamed something different – usually I’m accused of being a Obama staffer, basement dwelling welfare slacker, hippy or all of the above.
I am a big supporter of Obama. Carping about Palin’s wardrobe is a waste of time and gets away from where Obama is winning – that is on real issues, real policy proposals, and real proven track record (seriously, just look at the work he did in IL or some of his constitutional scholarship).
Just because McCain is reduced to throwing pebbles about trivia doesn’t mean we should throwing the big rocks of real issues at him.

I respect that opinion. I just look at the 4 candidates and say to myself…I could live with 75% of them being the President…And the claim the GOP makes is Palin is more experienced than Obama…Point blank, when it comes to executive experience, she is the most experienced…But it takes more, and when you listen to her…She just does not, in any way, know what in the world she is talking about…Trust me, I respect McCain, and after this election, i’m sure he will go back to his old self and have people saying, “wow, if he was like this the whole time, he may have won”…But with the current state of things, and the divisive campaign/ideology of the Republican party, the choice is clear. It comes down to 2 choices…And they are clear, look at it like this…
1. (Obama)One campaign is counting on unity to win. The other campaign is hoping for division in the privacy of the booth when nobody is looking(McCain).
2. Both candidates want to resotre the nation. (McCain)One wants America to be feared. The other wants America to be respected(Obama).
The choice is so clear.

As for Ayers, that was when he was 8. People will say, he was associated with him as recently as 6 or 7 years ago. Listen, are we going to say that any young man or woman that he teaches at his University, or the parents of those students can’t do anything dealing with the government? They are all associated in some way with Ayers but are we going to hold his actions against those students and parents? No, we are realistic when it comes to that, so why is Obama under the Microscope?
As for Wright, I indeed have a problem with Wright. He doesn’t have an Anti-American agenda, but yes he has made disgusting Anti-American statements. Close relationship or not, Obama should have left the church, that is a given. He has denounced him and done away with him now.
We could also point the finger at the other ticket’s associations as well. But, I can’t play the guilt by association game. I know how I am, and I know regardless of what I hear, I’m my own person. That’s why I dont blame Sarah for Todd’s Anti American agenda, or McCain for having Sadaam’s lobbyist on his team…Who is more anti-american than Sadaam? But I know John McCain, and I know that’s not his character. Just like I know not to put Obama and Ayers in the same category.

bertrand88: “Funny how the Obama campaign is not commenting on their own clothing. ”
They already were attacked about it, answering stupid efforts to paint Obama as a GQ model – google for “five suit.” But just because the Republicans and the press went after Obama for being too well dressed doesn’t mean I think it’s worth wasting time on Palins wardrobe. Her lack of apparent intellect and poor record in governance is far more appropriate to discuss, and more powerful. Even if Republicans did “started it” by harping on Obama’s wardrobe doesn’t make it any more relevant. Stick to the real issues and Obama will win.

The American public deserves to see the expense details for this silly 2 year campaign for BOTH parties. D’s will outspend the R’s by at least 3 to 1 but that is not the issue. The total is obscene by any standard.

Remember who supports Obama -
people like Rev. Wright and
Farrahkan – a person who hates Jewish
people -(Rev. Wright gave Farrahkan an
award of some sort.)
Just look at Obama’s record for Israel.
He is and never will be a friend to
Israel.
Obama walks with people who hate Israel.

People are losing their jobs and homes, while 150,000 is spent on Sarah Palin’s clothers. Maybe you should also ask about Cindy McCain’s 350,000 dress.
