TJ – Sarah Palin has not benn a victim of gotcha journalism. I have seen many interviews with Charles Gibson over the years and he has never done this. Why would he start now? I can only speak to the Gibsn interview as it is the onlyone I seen in it entirety. Every question seemed fair and legitimate. The thing about the Bush doctrine, I did not know and I doubt a lot of people knew. What got me was her blatant BSing her way thru the question. It did not work and Charlie basicaklly called her on it. If she had just said something like “Gosh Cahrlie, I am not an authority on the Bush doctrine but let me tell you what McCain’s policies are.” I would have stood up an applauded her as much as I dislike her. She instead tried to weasel her way out of the question like a typical politician.

Wow… The bad Disney movie just keeps getting worse and worse!!!
I was embarrassed for her when I saw the clip about what newspapers she reads. I was pretty sure she was going to say “USA Today” and People Magazine… Instead, she said nothing. Is that “gotcha” journalism? No way!

But there is nothing “moderate” about where Ifill stands on Barack Obama. She’s so far in the tank for the Democratic presidential candidate, her oxygen delivery line is running out.

I agree with Paul Newman that the media skews their reports. He once said that if an interviewer asked “would you beat your wife?” and he answered “no”, the headline would read “Newman DENIES beating wife.” Thereby indicating that it was a denial of an actual event, rather than a rhetorical question, responded to. I do not trust anything they say!

The media is a disgrace to themselves. It isn’t news when Joe Bidden doesn’t know his presidents (my 5th grader does) and he is touted as a great intellect. What an idiot and Obama gets one softball after another. The media elite believe that they are better than the average american and seek every opportunity to belittle the average person for their egos. Fortunitely, some of us that live in fly over country are not as stupid as they need us to be.

Here come the hit pieces! ABC is just warming up so that tomorrow night they can show their undivided support for the messiah’s prophet.

Palin wants us to believe she’s just like the average Joe, huh? Not even close. For one major difference, the average Joe would NOT have accepted the VP nod. We would have known we were not qualified (remember her asking what a veep does all day?). Nor would we had thrown our families into the national spotlight, especially with such limited prior exposure. I feel bad for her kids AND their friends.

This Biden-Palin debate is going to be a debacle. The moderator is currently writing a PRO-OBAMA book to be released in January.
All those who refuse to acknowledge that the media is slanted heavily to the left are either ignorant or in denial.

A campaign is like a long job interview, and the media is tasked with asking the questions. If people are comfortable electing someone who is good at reading the teleprompter then they’ll get what they deserve. And if this appeal works, and she becomes president, do you really believe that she’ll be making decisions?

ABC-Your headline “Sarah Palin Does’nt Read Newspapers?” is CRAP, and you know it! Governor Palin specifically said in the article that she reads all of them she has in front of her. The fact that she refuses to name a specific paper only means that she professes no loyalty to any of them. If she named a specific paper, it would only cause that paper to be heaped on with as much garbage as what you are heaping on her! Bottom line-Teh MSM has REALLY flunked basic real world jounralistic ethics lately, and it is clearly showing……

I will say I think her answer reflects fear more than anything else. She could have named any number of mags or papers.

I don’t believe she’s much of a reader based on what Ive read about her tenure as governor *but* she knows enough to drop a name. Its fear that’s choking her.

Frankly, I don’t have any problems with Palin answers and I am a PhD from the University of Chicago. This lady speaks and talk like many of the people I met before, she is not “so sophisticated or used the language and big words we in the main cities or “Ivy League” schools, nor she uses calculated words like many of the DC politicians. She is simple and I believe people mistaken if they are comparing her to Hillary, Biden, Obama, Ferraro, etc. Those are people from different places, backgrounds, circles and lets face it very comfortable with the elites. They can’t understand the cultural divide in this country, not everyone speaks and talks like the elite or big words politicians or script writers. Palin speaks a language that probably is a disgrace for the elites; but his words resound in middle America and that’s what matters!
Ironically the same people that are adoring Obama with all his lacking of knowledge of issues, experience, those ones blinded by his charisma and seen no wrong or mistakes on him are the same ones that rushed to trash Palin with out getting to really know her. It needs someone wise enough to manage the economy and weapons systems of this country. I have NO, NONE, ZIP faith in this woman’s ability to manage anything. And this from a woman who has wanted a ‘viable’ female candidate for the last 40 years. Ms. Palin’s naivete, foolishness and lack of intellectual depth is downright frightening when viewed as the possible leader of the free world.

I read the Idaho Statesman, Newsweek magazine, Smithsonian Magazine, National Geographic, and read CNN online, ABC news online, MSNBC online, and watch the Today show, CNN, and Fox news on my television. If somebody asks me what papers I read, and where I get my news info, I can tell them without any hesitation because I do this daily. (I did not even have to think about this question – the answer came even as I was reading the article.) And I am not running for the White House! As far as I am concerned, this woman is a total joke. My teenagers are better informed than she is on national and international affairs! Just think what the rest of the world is going to think if this team wins: a senile old man and Alaska barbie. Ronald Reagan’s excuse was Alzheimers….what’s McCain’s?

Luckily for us America is getting so obese that there aren’t enough people with 6-packs to vote her into office.

What a mixed up situation this is…Rebublican President and staff calling for socialized banking, Democrats siding with the Republican president to carry out his administration’s plan. Half of the Republicans voting against their president, but blaming Democrats for their vote, and the other half of Republicans carrying the banner of their president to carry out the socialized banking policy.
Meanwhile, Palin and McCain scream for Deregulation while supporting a policy that is in clear contrast to the “values” they hold so dear.
Can we just forget for a second who is a Republican or a Democrat and just base a decision on what we feel is right for the country? I’m a liberal minded independent (socially liberal and fiscally conservative). I really don’t care if gays are having sex or if a mother who would probably end up molesting or killing her infant with neglect decides to have an abortion. If its wrong, God will deal with her in his own way. But what I do care about is when Administrations such as Bush’s weaken our country with things like the Iraq war, politicizing our justice system, running our country’s surplus into a deficit in 2 years, and just basic mismanagement and now wants us to sign off on a bailout for wall street that can be fixed in other ways rather than destroying our free market principles.
You got three months Bush. Just put a bandaid on it till then. I’ll take my chances with the next president no matter who that will be.

I am deeply saddened by the fact that the “average American” is of the mind that putting an unqualified person in the White House is a good idea. Just what are the qualifications for holding the highest elected office in the United States of America? Article Two of the Constitution states that a Presidential candidate must:
be a natural-born U.S. citizen
be at least 35 years old;
be a permanent resident in the U.S. for a minimum of 14 years

OK … I guess I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt, but as I recall Bill Clinton also represented the Joe Sixpack average American. He was from a small Southern state and also a Washington outsider. Aside from his personal life, he turned out to be a decent President — not among the best but certainly not among the worst — and proved to be highly intelligent and well educated. The U.S. needs that kind of representation of the average American rather than someone like Sarah Palin.

3. Can you image Hilary mangle an interview like ‘Sarah’ did?
4. Can you imagine any of George H.W. Bush, Cheney, Gore, Liberman, and Geraldine Ferraro mangle an interview like Palin did?
5. If Katie Couric or Charlie Gibson had conducted an interview with McCain asking the same questions, would McCain or his campaign have cried foul and made an accusation of “gotcha journalism”
One more thing. Couric should have asked instead, “you majored in journalism. Why did you choose that path in school and which journalistic figure, if any, inspired you to go into journalism?”

I’m sick and tired of these bloggers blasting the media for their handling of the presidential & vice-presidential candidates. It is the priority purpose of the Fourth Estate — print, radio, video and Internet media to report on how each of the candidates are able to deal with the various crises, local, national and international, that will inevitably confront our next chief executive and his possible standin. They do this by attending the various campaign rallies, town halls, interviews and debates,which the majority of citizens aren’t able to do. Campaign rallies and town hall meetings provide forums for the candidates to primarily preach to the choir, and the media distills and passes on to the rest of us the kernels of reality nestled within the rest of the candidates’ blather. Interviews by professional political journalists and debates allow the rest of us to see how well each candidate can think on his/her feet, and how knowledgeable they are on the concerns of the electorate. Yes, some in the media are
slanted toward one or the other major
party candidates — they’re as much
Americans and citizens as the mythical Joe-Sixpack and as individuals have as
much a stake in who wins this campaign
as you or I do. The few times the McCain campaign removed Palin’s gag, she’s come off as ignorance personified so she’s been kept under wraps until tomorrow’s debate, immersed in in debate prepartion. I think she’ll be so stuffed with “facts” that once in a debate with Joe Biden, her mind will be unable to summon which “facts” apply to which questions, and will sound like a parrot. It terrifies me that this air head could be a heartbeat away from a 72 year old president with serious

The media has always been biased toward the democrats. In 2000, the media irresponsibly called Gore as the winner before all the polls were closed, then I saw a news anchor cry when she had to call Bush the winner. In 2004, they were in the tank for Kerry and listening to them you could really believe that Kerry had already won.
Now they have lost all ethics completely. The news organizations are supposed to report the news, NOT THEIR OPINIONS!

I’ve also been looking at the clips of past news interviews with Palin. What showed was that she was more comfortable in a local environment, and that she was better prepared for the press opportunities – but not substantially sharper or deeper.
The Alaska governor’s race debate showed her avoiding direct answers much the same way as she’s been doing lately – much to the frustration of the other candidates and moderator. She “wins” by frustrating the others to the point of “lets end this thing now, its painful”.

You liberal spitting miasma about McCain’s health should consider the science. McCain’s mother is still alive and well. Genetics, more than anything, dictate our heath condition–more than environment. Obama’s mother is DEAD, which means, scientifically, Biden has better chance to become president than Palin. Now you want that wooden head liar president?

Heres a clear difference between Palin and Biden. Palin conceeded when she does not know an answer to a question. Biden pushed forward with ultra confidence when you recite a straight out lie! What’s worst? conceed when you do not know something or opt to be a master of telling lies?
Not great choices but if polician let me know when they don’t have the answer to something, at least i know where to take things from there. However, if they lie to me with a straight face confident, they leave me with no options, no facts, no choices and sitting in dark while the world may be falling apart around me.

Governor Palin will be speaking in generalities. She will say things like “reduce taxes to create jobs”, “win in Iraq to win in Afghanistan”, “‘all of the above’ for energy independence,” etc. To determine whether she actually understands more than a few lines fed to her by her handlers, ask her to compare and contrast the specifics of her supposed positions with those of Obama-Biden. Ask her, for example, how exactly McCain’s health care tax approach meshes with his claim that he is reducing health care premium?
A leader needs to do more than repeat slogans. She needs to know the detailed mechanisms and theories that support those slogans.

Speaking of Sen. Obama’s post high school educational record, it would be nice if he would have those records from Harvard (plus all the articles he wrote as Editor of the Harvard Law Review), his Occidental College records, and his Columbia records released for public inspection and media “analysis”. I understand that they are basically off-limits, or “sealed” for some reason. And although it has nothing to do with his education, it would also be nice for him to provide the public and media with a true, official BIRTH CERTIFICATE, you know, the kind with the raised official state seal or certification, like mine has.
As for “dumb”, he certainly didn’t seem too intelligent when he said he was going to visit all 57 states, or when he spoke about his Muslim faith, only to be corrected by Mr. Stephanopolis, after which he stumbled quite a bit. He certainly didn’t seem too intelligent when during his “educational” visit to
Iraq, he strongly suggested that the Iraqi government not make any commitments on troop withdrawal schedules “until a new administration is in place”. This was especially egregious, because by doing what he did, he violated the Logan Act and actually committed a felony. Beyond that, he also demonstrated his lack of knowledge when, on Aug. 26, 2008, he called for the U.N. to censure Russia over its actions in Georgia. Of course, as Russia is one of the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council, nothing would happen, and as a highly educated person seeking the most powerful office in this country, he, or one of his handlers, should have done their homework before making such a pointless and foolish statement.
By the way, how does saying that someone says stupid things make anyone a RACIST? Perhaps it might just be true that Sen. Obama, like many other well-educated people, occasionally say DUMB things. A Harvard education is no shield against stupidity. Nor, in the case of President Bush, is a Yale degree a shield. Dumb is as dumb sounds.

I would say that Nancy Polosi nor Sarah Palin are people we need running this country. America is not about partism, it is about real people, real issues. Reading is a primary subject and something we hope our children can do by the time they are in first grade. Reading is a fundamental ability needed by anyone who expects to lead our nation. In her interview with Charlie Gibson, she said she didn’t “blink” (meaning think) when McInsane asked her to be her VP. Most importantly, she said she will not blink when making routine foreign policy decisions, such as attacking the Russians or not thinking twice if Israel decides to attack Iran.
To those of you who are fine with this “Joe Six-Pack American” being a heartbeat away, you should not hesitate to use one of these types as your lawyer, doctor, accountant, etc. If it’s alright to hire such a person as leader of the free world, then it should be fine to use someone like this for less important positions.
Here is another way of looking at this: Say you are an employer two resumes land on your desk. You are looking at their academic credentials. One indicates a bachelor’s degree from a low-rated state university. GPA is not indicated because the individual received a D in Economics. (Also, nothing is stated about attending six colleges in five years.)
The other resume says bachelor’s degree from Columbia University and JD from Harvard, graduating first in class and being the editor of the Harvard Law Review.
Which resume would you choose? If you said the first one, then you will love the academic credentials of this individual’s running mate: GPA ranked 894 out of 899 in graduating class.

Perhaps you failed to notice that in one post I pointed out that one should read serious books, which is what I do, and I recommend it to you, too. It has been a lifetime habit for me.
As for your “begging” me to watch some ridiculous interview of two weeks age, forget it. My mind was made up months ago, when the Democrats greased the skids for Sen. Clinton and folded their tent and went to Chicago. The resultant nomination process was, to my mind, one of the greatest frauds perpetrated on the citizens of America that I can remember and I remember a lot.
Shame on the Democratic Party, and they have received more that their fair share of votes from me over the years. Now if they want to redeem themselves, they can do so by cleaning house: Nancy Pelosi to step down, Harry Reid to retire, Chris Dodd to resign and Howard Dean to be booted out, and the DNC to return to Washington, where it belongs.
In the meantime, I have no problem with a one-term Republican Administration vs. a Democratic controlled Congress. And, if Gov. Palin proves herself to be Presidential material, as Harry Truman proved himself, well I would give that some very serious thought for the future. After all, in Germany, no one thought Angela Merkel was material for the Chancellorship, but they don’t think that way any more.

Second of all these arguments that Palin “is like me” or “she’s a breath of fresh air,” are fine and dandy for a mayor, governor or a member of congress for that matter. But to put a “Joe Six Pack” figure in the White House makes no sense. There is too much at stake in this election. We’re in the middle of 2 wars and a financial crisis.
Also, people need to stop blaming the media for doing their job. There are 34 days until the election. It’s not “gotcha journalism” to ask someone what newspapers they read. That’s one of the most softball questions a person could ask! She could have easily mentioned the local Alaskan papers along with USA Today, the New York Times or Wall Street Journal.

I don’t get this. According to their tax records, the Palins make over $265,000 a year..how is that a millionaire like McCain who owns 7 homes and 13 cars, and Palin who makes over a quarter of a million dollars a year qualify as the candidates for the “average Joe”, middle class guy or family? Cindy McCain in her 300,000 dresses and her husband in his 450 shoes are not the “elitists”, but Obama and his wife, who own 1 home and 1 car, and who just paid off student loans are elitist.

I read the papers, read the internet news, and even listen to CNN, Fox News, and ABC News on a pretty consistant basis. Unfortunately, I have no more faith in the truth of their reporting than I do in the lies of our politicians – from both parties. Everyone has an agenda – even the media. The old days of reporting facts are gone – it’s now all spin. But I do watch the spin from many sources and spend hours trying to figure out what is true – but I can’t be sure as I only know what all the different people tell me. Many of us are willing to put our faith in what is told to us – I wish we could, but I know better.

Gwen should recuse herself from moderating the debate, that is what any professional would do. It is not just her strong support of Obama, there is a clear conflict of interest in that she has a strong pro-Obama book coming out, and she therefore has a financial interest, not only in moderating the debate, but also in the outcome of the election. With Obama in, she would have great proceeds from the book sales. This is exactly what some people call being in the tank for Obama. Broadcast media, for the most part, nearly all of the Fourth Estate has been more a cheering squad for Obama. McCain is going clearly uphill all the way, against the wind, the media, an unpopular President and a do nothing Congress, with approval ratings in the crapper. For some voters, than God (if we can still say that), experience and character of the Presidential candidate really DO MATTER. Senator Obama fails on both of these issues. I am frankly surprised that many people want to vote for an inexperienced, first term socialist to represent their interests in a republic. Good luck on that, he is dreadfully lacking in experience and judgment to lead our nation. Therefore, I will strongly support the McCain/Palin ticket for government reform, lower taxes in the long haul, and for the restoration of confidence in our government.

Personally, I don’t want to be equated with some Joe six pack image. To me that indicates a lack of intelligence and low standards. Most well-read and informed people get their news from a variety of conflicting sources – some that are inline with their way of thinking and others that are not. Palin may very well get much of her news from NewsMax (who has treated her well), but hopefully she gets the opposing point of view from NY Times as well. I read the Communist Mainfesto in college, does that make me a communist? No, it only means I am interested in learning another point of view. I might read Ben Stein’s columns. I am a registered Republican who is unhappy with the Bush administration. Sarah Palin is like GW Bush, but with no family political connections. Hmm. I received a journalism degree about 13 years ago, and my absolute favorite class was Media Ethics. I don’t ever recall asking good concrete questions, like the ones Couric asked, and then politely insisting on an answer as being “gotcha” journalism. I would call that Journalism. I suppose what Palin would consider appropriate journalism, I would consider PR.
Actaully, in the PR classes I had, they would expect clearer answers than what Palin gave. I don’t know what caliber of journalism program that University of Idaho had, but I went to one of the top J-schools in the country. I would expect anyone with a journalism degree to be able to anticipate and research a topic better than what she seems to have done.
As far as the questions go, I think they were legitimate questions that, as an independent trying to get the information, I need to make a prudent decision would anticipate ANY person in a campaign to be able to answer — even the person manning the booth at a local fair or festival.
The fact is, as a former news/sportscaster, she should have been able to nail these interviews. This should have been what she was good at. If she can’t pull this off, I question her entire ability to do the job of VP, or God forbid, president.

Tim: yes people do read newspapers. Maybe you and Sarah are not aware that most metropolitan daily newspapers offer news on their web sites. People can even subscribe and read perspectives written by journalists around the country. The word “newspaper” no longer means a publication printed on newsprint paper. And yes, I expect anyone who is running for the one of the highest positions in our nation should better understand international events and regional issues by reading multiple newspapers everyday.

ROFLMAO BHO… I saw the figures from Fannie and Freddie contributions yesterday. Obama was 165k and some change, and McCain was 190k and some change. So does this mean that John McCain ranks first in contributions from Freddie and Fannie?

I find any idea of a bailout that includes ANY compensation for CEO’s and other executives of the companies that would benefit from any bailout disgusting and down right disturbing. Lookk at Fishman of WaMu… he was on the job for 18 days… his compensation will be 19 MILLION. It would be more than that but the 600,000 reserved stock shares and the 1,000,000 stock options have no value anymore.

I can’t say I know anyone to come out of Harvard, much less with the honors of magna cum laude (which means he was towards the top of his class), who is anything less than highly intelligent. See, even McCain has to tighten his belt in this time of uncertainty. He feels our pain. But he might need to suspend his campaign, like he has done or threatened to do just about every time he has run for office, to do the closing.

This is “Barbie” politics, pick a air brained, pretty woman and the Joe-Six-packs of the world will vote for her. Mostly because they can relate, after all they married a woman just like her! This is where she shines with the religious, uneducated masses. Funny, her campaign now sees this and it appealing to her true voting base, now that she’s loosing ground in the polls actually speaking to reporters about the issues.
It is unfathomable that this woman is governor of Alaska let alone a national VP pick! Does she have a brain? Can she use it? Maybe, but she sure hasn’t shown it yet in any interview. My local bank teller is prettier and more affluent on the issues, and would be a better choice for VP (she too has a journalism degree). It’s obvious to anyone that Palin is not VP material let alone someone who could be president some day. That’s a scary thought. Not knowing what the Bush Doctrine is is inexcusable for someone in her position. She simply can’t function without being rehearsed to death and then once prepped so well she gets confused on the rhetoric they fused into her brain and drivels mindless facts out when she’s cornered. Her not knowing a single printed news media she’s read lately? Katie could have helped her on that one by mentioning what “news” to you read every “week”! I can see the next SNL sketch coming!
As for foreign policy, I’ve been to Russia myself for 2 one month trips which makes me more qualified than her in foreign policy, I’ve seen how the Russians live day to day, learned some of their language, interacted with people on the street, met a Colonel who’s headmaster of a military academy there and saw a cadet graduation. Partied to the wee hours of the morning with Russian families and friends. Sure I live in Washington state which means she’s closer to Russia, but at least I’ve been there and seem them!
I for one hope the country sees this ploy for what it truly is, a grasp for the religious right, woman and six-pack-joe vote to get any chance of winning the election. If the Republicans win with these candidates, maybe Sarah Palin can come visit me in Russia or at least wave to me out the back window of her home. Russia has strong leaders, Putin would make mince meat pies out of Sara Palin if in the same room negotiating a treaty! We will be the laughing stock of the world if the Republican ticket wins in the fall.

I like her… a LOT! Frankly, I am TIRED of the selfishness that goes on in the congress and senate. Not ALL… but the ones w/any power seem to forgot they’re there to work for the people of this country. Rather, it’s ALL politics… I am TIRED of all the Politics. Get me a REAL person I can relate to please. Middle class in the heart of Chicago woman from a family line of teachers and professors here. And I want REAL representation. I want a non-elitists who thinks of nothing else but themselves.

I would like to know EXACTLY what makes a person a Republican? In all seriousness, if you have conservative views… I am not sure how you couldn’t understand her views.
