Post debate Mom musings…
Sarah Palin’s performance last night reminded me just how tricky it is for women to succeed in the world of politics – too formal and you’re cold, too informal and you’re a lightweight.
Sarah Palin clearly opted for the friendly neighbor image last night in St Louis but did she go to far? Do we really want our Vice President, possibly our President, to wink at us? Do darn it, joe six pack and daggonit (which I can’t even spell) sound just too unprofessional in that setting?
Democratic pollsters are saying today that the opinion dials went down on some of those folksier moments – particularly among women viewers – but they’re also saying the Palin smile was a winner. So, which is it? What do we want from our women politicians? Do we even know and is it different among men and women?
If women ruled the world I suspect these questions wouldn’t even come up. We could be ourselves without being a pastiche of ourselves. But then you know the old saying: If the three wise men had been three wise women, they’d have turned up on time, helped with the delivery, cleaned the stable, cooked a casserole, brought sensible gifts and, yes, there would be peace on earth!
Have a great weekend.

I think winking is a bit much.
But what did she do really? Ignore the questions, repeat memorized lines, smile, wink, run out the clock…
Nothing I saw changed my opinion of her.

We want our female leaders to be intelligent, thoughtful, and strong. Not to merely skate by with low expectations, a smile, a wink, and some phony folkism.
Posted by: ellie | October 3, 2008, 6:41 pm 6:41 pm
Actually, what we women want is a woman who is polished and professional. Those two things don’t necessarily cancel out warm and human.
Most of us have been doing it right in the business world for a long time and this type of unprofessional and frankly “I-can’t-get-elected-unless-I-act-like-a-cheerleader-without-a-brain-in-my-head-and-flirt” behavior is demeaning to all professional women everywhere.
Are you trying to get elected? Or are you trying to turn on the sexy for some man and sleep your way to the top?
Because, believe me, in the workplace, that’s exactly what people would think. Even when we try to be as professional as possible and do our best work, we can be suspected just because we’re considered attractive. It’s happened to me and other women I’ve known It’s very demoralizing to have worked hard, tried to be the utmost in professionalism and still been feminine. Don’t we have enough sexist men still around? Not near as many as before, but they’re still here and we have to go to greater lengths just to prove we’re worth the salary or not willing to jump into the sack with them to get ahead. The recent Bloomberg report is a perfect illustration of the sexism that still exists.
Professional women in this country have worked too hard to get as far as we have to have the Palins destroy it in one fell swoop.
Posted by: This is SO Old | October 3, 2008, 6:46 pm 6:46 pm
So….I’m to take it that women are better served running everything than men? *sigh* The media is sexist, as well. *yikes* Quit making excuses. State your positions eloquently, and you won’t be called into question. For the past 8 years we’ve had an “aww shucks” president, do we REALLY want an “aww shucks” VP for 4 more years? You can see how well that has worked for America for 8 years….

Palin went way too far with the hokey winking and phony folksiness. It was as if she was flirting with the audience, not presenting herself as a serious candidate.
It doesn’t have to be a one-or-the-other choice between cold formality and lightweight informality, for men or women.
But because Palin is unqualified and capable only of regurgitating scripts crammed into her head, she had to go with the folksy approach. She tried to get by on her looks and manner rather than on experience and knowledge, both of which she lacks.
That approach obviously appeals to some people who feel good if a candidate is just like them. But I think most voters want better-than-average people as president and vice-president — and can see through Palin’s phoniness.

Dear Katty:
NEWSFLASH: Sarah Palin has already succeeded in the world of politics. She was elected Governor of the Great State of Alaska in 2006.
She defeated the incumbent Republican governor Murkowski in a landslide in the 2006 primary!
She then defeated the Democratic challenger in a route – 48.3% to 40.9%
Palin is definitely intelligent, thoughtful and strong.
No wonder she is the second* most popular governor in the United States.
N
* The most popular governor is Republican Governor Bobby Jindal who showed the country the correct way to handle two major hurricanes in a month.

this is all ridiculous
she didn’t answer questions and people are saying things like
“she was flawless”…”she hit it out of the park”
all I can say is…these are the same people that said we should act in Iraq because there is wmd and a mushroom cloud on the horizon…
and the people who believe what they are selling …
believed the same stories in 2004.
and we are sooo much better off because they believed the stories then
as we would be sooo much better off if they believe them now.
on the scale/curve of debates to determine who should be in the white house in the history of our nation…
Palin sucked…and to say otherwise is just destructive.

that shows nothing of how you resolve our forward us with these issues.

I find the handling of Palin by politicians and the media to be embarrassingly forgiving. The standards for this woman have been set well below expectations. It seems that all she has to do is show up, and the world stands on its ear and gives her a standing ovation. I could’ve done what she did last night, and I’m not politician. To me, the issue here is do we as women truly want to be treated equally or do we only want to be treated that way when it suits us. Joe Biden was a gentlemen because if he’d been more straightforward, more confrontational, he’d have been judged an ogre or sexist. I keep hearing that Palin “held her own”, when in fact, I felt she’s been given the benefit of the doubt more than any other politician who has ever been in this race, including Hillary Clinton. The media and politicians seem to think that a pretty face and a smile injected with the word “energy” every five minutes makes her some kind of a prodigy. Needless to say, I wasn’t impressed.

Alex,
Palin is a better than average person. Go look at her track record. She is exceptional.
She has more experience, executive experience that all three other candidates combined!
Which of the three Senators that helped get this country into this financial meltdown would you rather have in office?
How about we perp walk all three of the other candidates and put Sarah in office.

I think the dilemma: “too formal and you’re cold, too informal and you’re a lightweight” also applies to male politicians too, especially when you are vying for the top job. And interestingly, that informal Bush did prove himself to be a lightweight.
Her attempts at folksiness were definitely over the top — came across as crude at times. I would certainly not tell my daughter that it would be okay to keep winking when she was trying to make a serious argument in a professional setting.

Dear mismomusa:
What planet have you been on. Even Saturday Night Live mocked the media’s slanderous, libelous and outrageous behavior toward Sarah Palin.
The major media’s vaunted ‘standards’ disappeared into the ether as they have reported one slander and falsehood after another in their blatant attempts to undermine her election.
All she has to do is show up?
Go look at her track record.
She took on the corrupt Republican politicians in her own state. That was courageous behavior. That was exceptional behavior. That was outstanding behavior.
There was a reason she defeated the incumbent Republican Governor in the primaries. She is an exceptional candidate.
She must be really cool under pressure.
After all, it takes steady nerves to sink the winning baskets in a championship basketball game.
“and the world stands on its ear and gives her a standing ovation.”
You got that one right. She was outstanding last night.
and no, you couldn’t have done what she did last night.
Was she cowed by the moderator who was ‘in the tank’. Gee, what idiots picked a moderator for the debate who has a book coming out just in time for O’s inauguration. Okay, I should give them a pass – it turns out the moderator did not divulge that information to them in advance. But good grief.
“To me, the issue here is do we as women truly want to be treated equally”
She certainly overcame last night. There were plenty of loaded questions tossed her way last night. She set the tone from the get-go that she was going to take her message to the people and not be limited by the questions of a corrupt moderator.
She had to walk the extra mile last night.
“Joe Biden was a gentlemen because if he’d been more straightforward, more confrontational, he’d have been judged an ogre or sexist.”
Perhaps. Perhaps not. As it was, he just lied his hind quarters off.
I wonder how those ‘code pink’ ladies are feeling about their candidates now. They are going to stop the war in Iraq and plunge us into twelve more. Oh boy, I can’t wait.
N.
By the way, she injected the word ‘Energy’ every five minutes because it is a major campaign issue and a key plank in her platform and her personal area of knowldege and expertise.
DRILL BABY DRILL.
We need energy independence and we need it now. We have to stop supporting evil dictators and people who don’t like us with our money.
Her plan is the ‘ALL OF THE ABOVE’ plan.
She knows we need to develop the oil resources we have that are easily accessible NOW. Those other energy resources are going to take years to come up to speed.
What did our ‘do nothing’ 9% rated congress do?
They will not even cover the issue. They D’s don’t even want use to access the easy to reach oil that is within 50 miles of our coastline.
GOOD GRIEF.
They must be in the pockets of the foreign oil companies!

Welcome to the club. Yes, lets dispense with those ‘black-white, two-party blinders’!
They play us like the World Wide Wrestling federation. Good guys/Bad guys.
Of the 4 remaining candidates, she is the ONLY one with clean hands. Biden (30 years), McCain (30 years) , and Obama (8 years) are all deeply responsible for the financial mess this country is in.
I am tired of seeing the perps in Congress lecture us with their hands out for more money.
Where are the FIRINGS !
Where are the COPS !
Where are the HANDCUFFS !
Both parties led us down the path to financial disaster. The corrupt politicians that created the rules in Fannie and Freddie to ruin us and the non-corrupt politicians that sat back and did not stop the problem.
Help change ABC.

Palin is a disgrace to all professional working women. Thay cutsey folksy routine was sickening and fake. I was completely offended by her performance. She behaved like an American Idol contestant trying to win a popularity contest. She winked, and grinned and flirted so much I almost expected her to flash her undies at any moment.
She is an empty airhead devoid of any knowledge necessary for a VP. I’ve seen her type before: either they charm and smile and get ahead on their charisma and as soon as they have the job, direct others to do the work while they take the credit or they get the job, fail miserably and move on before their incompetence is revealed.
Palin is compassionless, ignorant and arrogant. This is a dangerous combination and I pray she is exposed for the fraud she is before election day and that McCain/Palin does not win.

The Poetry of Sarah Palin (from Slate)
“On the Bailout”
Ultimately,
What the bailout does
Is help those who are concerned
About the health care reform
That is needed
To help shore up our economy,
Helping the—
It’s got to be all about job creation, too.
Shoring up our economy
And putting it back on the right track.
So health care reform
And reducing taxes
And reining in spending
Has got to accompany tax reductions
And tax relief for Americans.
And trade.
We’ve got to see trade
As opportunity
Not as a competitive, scary thing.
But one in five jobs
Being created in the trade sector today,
We’ve got to look at that
As more opportunity.
All those things.

Doggone it, we want all of our politicians to look and sound like they below on the world stage! I have never been so embarrassed in my life for someone as I was for Palin last night! Where did she think she was, at a barbecue? And will someone pleeeeeease tell her the word is not pronounced nuc-u-lar–it’s NU-CLE-AR—NUCLEAR!!! Nick – perhaps you need to learn the definitions of words before you use them. Slander and libel don’t apply just because you don’t like what people are saying.
That’s why Palin herself hasn’t sued anyone you claim slandered or libeled her. She knows they haven’t and if they did, I would fully support her going after those news entities that did so.
I may think she’s unqualified to be VP, but I’m pretty sure she knows the difference between news gathering and slander/libel.

“news gathering” is most certainly not what is going on.

Nickatnight, you need to get your nose out of that woman’s panties. She skated by on empty rhetoric, a nice smile, and some winks. She didn’t answer the questions, and obviously, you don’t require much from a VP, because your expectations are non-existent if you think she did well. she didn’t say anything except that McCain was a Maverick (yeah right) and oh yeah, Alaska is the energy capital of America and energy is her middle name. Smile, look pretty, and “energy! energy! energy!”
Posted by: missmomusa | October 3, 2008, 7:49 pm 7:49 pm

OKAY….ENOUGH!!!!
I’m sick of Sarah Palin claiming to be a ‘hockey mom’ but she doesn’t say how she became one. MOTHERS, this is the story.
Track Palin, Sarah’s oldest son was caught cutting the brakes, along with two friends, of 50 SCHOOL BUSES. Luckily, a bus driver the next morning noticed the vandelism and was able to keep school children from being put in danger.
Palin’s son goes to juvenile school in Michigan where he spend most of his time….PLAYING HOCKEY!
This woman is such a phoney…that she can exploit what her son did for political points is SICK!!!!!
She needs to stop bragging about being a hockey mom, because there is nothing honorable in the manner in which she became one.
THIS IS SO OFFENSIVE AS A MOTHER, I WILL NEVER VOTE FOR HER! SHE’S SUCH A FAKE!

Dear (alleged) missmomusa,
Well, I guess since you have no real points to make so you have to take it straight into the gutter with sexual innuendos.
She did explain her position. She set out her agenda. She showed the country the direction she was going to head in.
I LISTENED to what she had to say.
And yes, Alaska is one of the major energy producing states. As are Texas and Louisiana!
Yes, the message is ENERGY, ENERGY, ENERGY.
Yes, the message is ALL OF THE ABOVE.
Yes, the message is FREEING THIS COUNTRY FROM DEPENDENCY ON EVIL DICTATORS
Yes, the message is DRILL FOR OIL; DEVELOP NUCLEAR POWER; DEVELOP WIND POWER; DEVELOP SOLAR POWER; DEVELOP ALL OTHER SOURCES OF POWER.
SEE YOU WERE LISTENING.
Even you knew what the message was.
The people in Tenn. need gas! The stations are dry because the hurricanes shut the gulf production down.
We need more sources of energy.
Eliminating 88% of the recoverable oil from development in this country is NOT an energy plan.

Questioning your knowledge of the definition of the words you use incorrectly does not imply a question of your intelligence. But under the circumstances, I do question the relevence of both your opinions and your purpose here.
I won’t bother to respond to you further. I prefer to listen to people that actually are credible, even if I disagree with them wholeheartedly.

The girl got pregnant and Palin, in an effort to deflect attention away from the question of whether or not Trig was hers, announced the girl’s pregnancy and then dragged her on to the national stage for everyone to gawk at talk about during what has to be the most confusing and frightening times of her life. Is this the action of a caring mother? I say no. She could have announced it and asked for privacy for her daughter instead of making her into a sideshow.
What kind of mother drags her newborn baby into the office three days after its born? What kind of mother would even consider taking to the campaign trail and aspiring to the White House leaving her special needs newborn behind? Special needs children need much more attention than a normal newborn. I’m a mother and no job would be worth abandoning my child like she plans to do. She has another young daughter too. What kind of mother would run off and leave her young children behind so she can fulfill her political ambitions?
Husband or not, this woman does not even care about her own children. She cares about nothing but herself as evidenced by her behavior last night. She is completely enamored with herself period! She is a horrible fake and phony. This hockey mom routine is sickening and pathetic. I’m shocked anyone buys her BS.

Any American citizen, republican or democrat with a bit of intelligence should be scared at the possibility of this woman becoming vice-president or president of the USA.
She avoided the questions that matters to the American people, and only recited and talked what she memorized in weeks of preparation.
John McCain is ok but Sarah Palin is a scary choice.

This is a great article about yesterday’s Palin performance. Everyone should read it, specially women:

Dear Kim,
The ‘crab’ mentality.
Is that where all of the other crabs in the pot crab onto the one crab that is about to climb out of the pot and drag it back in?
The outrageous behavior of many women towards Sarah Palin will certainly cause other successful women to think twice before running for higher office.
Do I really want to put my daughter or son through the all of the pain and name calling that Sarah’s children had to go through?
Look at the one post that troll keeps reposting up here.
Her son is going off to fight a war for our country and here he is spreading malicious gossip about him.
That behavior is completely uncalled for.
In a better world, this person would be disgraced.

Lola – I agree with you. There are so many more Republican and Democratic women available that I would urge my daughter to look up to.
I was actually considering supporting McCain until Palin appeared on the scene. I gave her the benefit of the doubt at first, but her lack of knowlege and her cutesy behavior was a total turn off.

I’m glad Palin is failing. Maybe this will turn off women in the future. And I’m glad they’re going after a woman much more so than all the men in this race. That’s how it should be.

When will women learn? They should NOT be in politics. Stay home with the kids. Politics is a man’s job and always will be.

I’ve been to your state. Women there are men.

Kim – you’re right. We do treat each other badly, but women who deliberately turn on the flirty behavior to get ahead also demean all of us. We have a hard enough time being taken seriously and respected. Palin is a very attractive woman, no doubt about it. She looks fabulous for a woman who is my age. I just wish she’d dump the cheerleader behavior. This isn’t a contest for homecoming queen. This is serious business.

Once again the mainstream media in their relentless attacks on Palin made sure the debates were record ratings. Now MILLIONS watched it — and they wouldn’t have in such huge numbers if the media hadn’t made them so curious.
And MILLIONS saw a novice do just as well as a 30 year veteran. And they were hugely impressed.
Say hello to President McCain!

Dear Marlene,
Governor Palin has not thrown ‘her daughter under a bus’ as you put it.
The pregnancy was announced because it was becoming obvious. To not announce it would have caused the daughter far more pain from the evil and malicious people who are out to destroy the Palin family.
There was no question that Trig is Governor Palin’s daughter. That was just a malicious rumor that was spread by some very evil people.
She was certainly not ‘dragged on stage’. She certainly looked very happy to be there and proud of her mother.
I am delighted that she and her fiance are in love; are getting married and are going to start a family.
It is the way of the world.
You do seem to have a ‘dragging’ fetish today. She didn’t ‘drag’ her newborn into the office either and I think the family is on the campaign trail with her.
Governor Sarah Palin is not abandoning her child(ren).
Your thesis is faulty.
Posted by: NickAtNight | October 3, 2008, 8:30 pm 8:30 pm
Women everywhere will flock to vote for Palin.
And the media knows it. And they are very afraid. That’s why they’re all in Alaska going through her dumpster for anything. Meanwhile the FBI raided the home of yet ANOTHER Obama friend today.
It’s HILARIOUS.
Posted by: Jo | October 3, 2008, 8:30 pm 8:30 pm
mak – yes, we can be. But I would also say the majority of women want to be seen as equals. We don’t want the expectations to be lowered and treated with kid gloves. And we certainly don’t want to be represented on the national stage by someone who can dish it out but can’t take it or has to be protected.
I want to see a woman trading jabs in a debate with a man on an equal footing and not have him have to worry about seeming sexist, unless he is sexist. It works both ways. If you want to be taken seriously, you have to act the part and take the hits.

Question, why is a candidate for the President of the United States (Barack Obama) hiring a lawyer, Joe Sandler who provides legal representation for CAIR, the Counsel of American-Islamic Relations, which was founded by the terrorists of Hamas? Barack Obama wants to be the Commander in Chief of the US in the war on terror yet is using a lawyer for CAIR a group with terrorist connections. Philip Berg’s filed law suit in the federal court requesting that Barack Obama produce his birth certificate to prove that he is eligible to be President and Barack Obama to hire this lawyer and does not present his original birth certificate to the courts. We are now waiting for the judge to rule on the motion. If the judge grants the case the trial will not start until after the November 4th election. So why does the Junior Senator from Illinois hire a lawyer instead of just providing a copy of the original birth certificate to the courts? WHY?

Wow, there ya’ll go again with that ‘scared’ theme. Give it up already.
It is also not appropriate to be demeaning others intelligence simply because we disagree with you on our politics.
So why should Alaskans be ‘scared’ of their Governor? Her approval rating at one point was in the 80′s. Goodness gracious.
Perhaps we should be afraid of our shadows?
She answered the questions that really matter to the American people. We clearly know where she stands on energy. We know what she will do for us on energy. That is the key issue for this election.
No more reliance on foreign despots. We are going to drill for the oil we have here at home. We are going to develop those tar sands.
Governor Sarah Palin is the best candidate for President of the United States right now – it is a shame she is only running for Vice President.

Dear Mike,
Lets not go there. Two wrongs do not make a right.
Berg’s lawsuit is going to be dismissed because he has no standing and it is ridiculous on its face. Just as the ridiculous lawsuit against John McCain was dismissed by the judge in that case. This election is not going to be decided in court.
Posted by: NickAtNight | October 3, 2008, 8:48 pm 8:48 pm
Jo – can’t work on one without working on the both in this election. We have racism and sexism brewing on both sides of the aisle this year. They are both issues that are still pervasive and toxic in this country. The Bloomberg case that made the news today is an excellent example. Neither is more important.
And since I have had to deal with sexist “crap” all my life, I speak of this with first hand knowlege. Racism is something that, as a white woman, I can’t speak to with any first hand knowledge.

Dear ‘this is so old’
There were no ‘kid gloves’ on that debate floor yesterday.
Both candidates were very civil to each other – but that is standard, classical debate behavior.
I don’t even want to see the behavior you were apparently hoping for in our debates.
Governor Palin is a very strong woman. She had and can easily handle criticism.
However, it is time for the trolls and the pond scum to stop libeling and slandering her and her family.
Particularly her family.
The defamation from the Saturday Night Live skit where they alleged her husband was … well, I’ll not repeat it … was indecent.

Jo – btw, I’m pretty liberal and I don’t hate happy people. I’m definitely not miserable and I certainly don’t hate the Palin family.
If they are happy, that’s wonderful. I don’t wish them, any unhappiness and pray for their son’s safe return from Iraq just as I do for every military family. Doesn’t mean I have to agree with anything she believes or think she’s qualified to run for VP.

Obama could not and cannot speak without a tele-prompter or without the scripts written by David Axelrod.Go back and listen to his speech at Bristol, Virginia 06-2008. It is painful to see a Pres. candidate who could not utter a complete sentence. It is totally incoherent.

Did they now?
Whose house got raided by the FBI?
Let us hope that they clean up our government. We have far to many corrupt politicians.
Already jailed and convicted this year are Hsu (illegal contributions to Hillary); Jinnah (illegal contributions to Hillary and Boxer); Scruggs (bribing a judge); and Rezko.
There were some, but not enough convictions in the Enron case.
There need to be a lot of convictions and dismissals for the fraud and failure of Fanny Mae and Freddie Mac!
Furthermore, the media needs a good housecleaning too. They were far to quiet on the brewing scandal.
Where were our watchdogs? Asleep in the backyard while the burglars took all of our furniture?

She completely lacked substance and rarely answered the questions. Her responses (often garbled and unrelated talking points) were often incoherent.
It seems to me that Palin has different standards–it’s okay for her to deal in complete generalities, be unfamiliar with history and policy, know nothing about the general national and international issues of the day. If a male candidate responded to questions in the same way, he would be laughed off the stage.
It’s okay for her to avoid the press and never hold a single press conference.
I think she has personal appeal, but that’s not what I’m looking for in a vice president or president. After the last eight years, competence would be nice.

Andy,
I read the article you referenced in the UK Guardian. The English are the most class-conscious and elitist society on earth. Not surprised at all by what was said. Do class-conscious, elitist intellectuals have all the answers? Definitely not. It’s called “We the People,” and we began this debate 200-plus years ago when we declared our independence from Great Britain.
And to “Paige,” THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES was a social commentary on the so-called cultured and privileged classes in America, more than on Jed and family. If you missed that, try watching again.
Sarah Palin IS intelligent, accomplished, very much Presidential material — more so than most of the Political Hacks in this country, and she is an authentic human being. That’s why everybody is so flummoxed. We haven’t seen anything like that in a long time.

Dear aviewerofabc:
The Beverly Hillbillies was certainly a very funny show. I chose to ignore the ‘social commentary’ and viewed it solely as a comedy.
As a first generation immigrant from England and an American citizen – not all of us are class-conscious and elitists. However, you are correct that there certainly is that snob element over there.
However, this article is in the guardian. They are a very left wing paper. So it is simply a hard core left attack on Governor Palin by people who hate her rather than a reasoned attack.
Since they cannot attack her on substance, they choose to try to destroy her reputation instead.
Yes, Governor Palin is intelligent. That is why she has rocketed up the ranks of our government. From city council woman to mayor to Governor of Alaska.
She is certainly a breath of fresh air.
She is the only candidate with clean hands in the current financial mess.
Who were the top recipients of Freddie-Mac and Fanny-Mae money?
Posted by: NickAtNight | October 3, 2008, 9:12 pm 9:12 pm
Every parent has done it. “Watch this! She high-fives!” The parent giggles proudly, “She’s a genius!” Well, I hate to burst your bubble, but they all high-five. Even my dog has learned to high-five. Which leads me to the obvious….a pit bull can learn to high five.
One conservative journalist said that Palin didn’t learn the easy way by going to Harvard, she learned the hard way, on the streets. I guess if I ever need open-heart surgery I won’t go to one of those doctors who learned the easy way in medical school. I want someone who learned surgical technique on the streets of Wasilla. Conservatives have long sent their sons and daughters to our greatest universities, but now they’ve decided to surrender those admirable values in exchange for pandering to the people they endeavor to inspire. The Republican party’s contrived contempt and manufactured mistrust of intellect is not only counter to what they’ve always believed, but is terribly dangerous to the country they claim to put first. To indoctrinate a nation to renounce education and intellect is to shamefully discourage and suppress the very thing that America has not only historically exalted but needs so desperately right now.
They talk of competing in the worlds of science and medicine, technology and economics and yet present us with a presidential candidate who has repeatedly shown and even admitted that he knows very little about such things, has repeatedly voted against funding for education, but will repeat at every opportunity that he is an expert at winning wars, though he’s never actually won one. They talk about teaching our children to compete in the global economy and international relations and yet they present us with a vice presidential candidate who has to memorize talking points and cynically condescend to us with winks and “doggonits” in order to conceal her astounding and terrifying lack of genuine knowledge.
Is Sarah Palin really the best and the brightest? Shouldn’t a leader inspire us by example, be curious as well as ambitious, humble as well as formidable, gracious as well as robust, and learned as well as knowable? Folksy does not have to mean ignorant, regular does not have to mean ordinary, and earnest does not have to mean frivolous. For an example of this, look at one Joe Biden. To call him a “Washington elitist” or a typical “east coast politician” is to shamelessly insult the type of American we like to claim as unique and special to our nation. Ironically, Joe Biden is the very type of person Sarah Palin aspires to be, a “real American” who tirelessly works for his country, never forgets where he’s from, and constantly looks forward to where we should be going. One thing is certain, Sarah Palin is no Joe Biden.
Sarah Palin and those like her do not aspire to transcend anything more than lowered expectations. Her foresight and ambition only reach as high as she tells you to look. The terms “Joe Six Pack” and “Hockey Moms of America” are code for the type of person she assumes won’t aspire to anything more than mediocrity. The talent of Sarah Palin is in her ability to charm some with her folksy demeanor while concealing her stunning vacuousness. The obscenity of John McCain is in his selfish willingness to reignite a culture war by attempting to provide someone like Sarah Palin entree to an office that she should only see from the other side of the velvet rope on the White House tour.
Last night’s debate was a David and Goliath match-up. Not because Joe Biden is a towering and formidable foe to a less-prepared civilian. Look again and tell me if you can tell the hero from the monster. Need some help? Goliath is the one who is condescending, arrogant, sarcastic, combative, insulting, childish, patronizing, untruthful and divisive. The monster doesn’t lead, it misleads. It doesn’t inspire, it frightens. It doesn’t protect, it provokes. The monster is what has dominated us for eight long years. Sarah Palin is just the brand new model.
The monster marches and devours and never sleeps and it can only be defeated by its opposite: Hope, Courage, Knowledge, Kindness, and Grace. Those are the traits we saw in Joe Biden last night. They’re the traits we see in Barack Obama. But most importantly, those are the traits they see in us.

I watched the debate last night. I found the kissing and folkism unnecessary. Sarah isn’t dumb; she’s just out of her league and trying to find ways to compensate for what she lacks. She kept referring back to energy as a way of getting around questions. I noticed that people are really defensive when it comes to Sarah. I noticed many of the women in Alaska aren’t imressed with home, especially the women who are living in domestic violence shelter. Alaska has the highest rate of sexual and physical abuse against women and children. She is in a position to help pass laws to protect these women and children. Yet, she hasn’t written any laws. A retire police officer said one of the problems is the lack of manpower on the police force. Has Sarah tried to increase manpower? I don’t think so. The day Palin went back to Alaska they had a welcome home rally. What the news didn’t show you was the same day they had a “Reject Palin Rally” that drew a crowd of about 1400 people. I saw a picture of a woman holding a sign that said I voted for her once and I’ll never do it again. Finally, what disturbs me about Palin is the pro life issue. I keep picturing a 12 yrs old girl getting violently rape and getting pregnant as a result. I can’t see making this little girl carry this baby full term. Look at the motional and physcological damage this would do. I want a woman VP that is professional, intelligent and charming someone my grand daughter can admire and respect.

After 8 years of what? Lets see.
We were viciously attacked on 9/11 at the start of his Presidency.
We have been fighting a war against the terrorists ever since.
Well, all I can say is the President was dealt a very difficult hand and he has responded to the best of his abilities to it.
I hope we elect a president who will win the war so that the world is safe for our children.
Given the choice between McCain and Obama, I think that clearly McCain is the better choice of the two. At least he is not pals with someone who has bombed our Pentagon. That kind of rules Obama as a candidate in my view.

Governor Palin kept referring to ENERGY because it is the top issue this year.
Until we free our country from the yoke of foreign oil we will not be able to secure our economy.
We are sick and tired of the malicous and evil minded attacks that people are making against Governor Palin. Even tonight there has been one repeated troll attack against her family.
That behavior is uncalled for.
At least your are pretending to be dignified in your attack. Unfortunately, you are simply repeating many of the same tired old paid lines of the trolls.
Many of the women in Alaska are impressed with Governor Palin. Her performance rating was as high as 80% last year.
Actually, California has the highest amount of domestic violence against women. So drop the lie.
You don’t have a clue as to what Governor Palin was working on in Alaska.

I could give a rats ass about Palin. The whole soccer-mom folksy routine is an act to compensate for an obvious lack of knowledge.
I blame her handlers more than her, but she simply is not ready for national politics. Perhaps she can wink at Putin while she’s looking at Russia. But the VP slot is not for on-the-job training.
Never-the-less, you can say she won if it makes you feel good. There is only ONE score that matters and it certainly isn’t Palin’s performance in a debate.

In 1992 Patty Murray ran for the Senate in the state of Washington. She had less experience than Barack Obama, not a lawyer, campaigned as a soccer mom in tennis shoes, she won overwhelmingly, supported by liberal Democrats. I just don’t agree with the anti-Palin arguments I’m hearing, they don’t reconcile at all. The attack on her experience is pure subterfuge. She is definitely bringing her base back to life.

Dear Omentum,
Now that is a strange name… Lost your big M?
It was very refreshing to hear Governor Palin in the debates last night.
Was the audience really that large? 70 million people? WOW.
I heard it was one of the most watched debates ever.
Didn’t she do a superb job.
She certainly radiated Power and Confidence. She is one self assured lady.
She certainly showed Knowledge of the issues – especially the critical energy issue.
Boy did she show tact! She let us know when Joe did not tell the truth, but she did not waste time belaboring the point – she went on to tell us her message; why she is running; what she is about.
I particularly appreciated the delicate way she handled Gwen I with regard to her being a major Obama fan and not the neutral mediator she claimed to be when she applied for the job.
Gwen should certainly have told the hiring team about her Obama book she is releasing on inauguration day.
That issue was very delicately and tactfully handled.
Well done.

Dear ‘The Only Real Winner’,
Goodnight.
Governor Palin had clear knowledge and command of all the subject matters being debated. Try again.
Governor Palin has more executive experience than all three other candidates combined!
Both the Presidency and the Vice Presidency have ON THE JOB training. They are one of a kind jobs. Not a single one of the candidates is fully prepared for the job.
Yes, she won the debate.
As for your other issue – Those votes get counted on election night. That is the only poll that counts.

Palin is just a distraction that keeps the attention off McLame.

“I suspended my campaign and couldn’t even get my own party to join me”
“I didn’t phone it in, but my campaign put out video of me phoning it in”
I could go on, but it’s just too sad.
Sorry John. You lost the “maverick” status when you flopped on every issue in which you had originally stood up to your party.

Dear WestCoastMessenger,
Excellent point.
Posted by: NickAtNight | October 3, 2008, 10:15 pm 10:15 pm
WestCoast – perhaps because her position wouldn’t be as potentially critical to the nation as VP is. Remember, this is the next in line in the event the unthinkable happens. Taking on a “beginners” place in Congress (junior Senator) isn’t the same. You can afford to have less experience and learn about foreign policy, the economy, etc. Your vote is not as crucial to the overall well being of the country.
And since she is a Dem, I would expect liberal Dems to support her. I would guess that she would have received the same support from Repubs if she was one.
I will leave the rest of you to the listen to the monologue that has been going on. It’s getting a little tired and I’m bored with it. Hopefully a fresh voice will come in and liven things up.
Posted by: This is SO Old | October 3, 2008, 10:16 pm 10:16 pm
Dear “This is sO Old”,
Sorry that you are so easily bored.
There is no ‘beginners’ place in the Senate. The Senators are equal in standing.
A certain Presidential candidate has even less experience that she does. So that is a non-starter.
She is certainly very well qualified for the job. She is the only candidate with ANY executive experience.

honestly, the only numbers that matter from last nights debate involve independents and undecided voters.
from what i can tell, they’re splitting 2 to 1 in favor of obama/biden after last night.
but feel free to say palin won, if it helps ya sleep at night.
myself, i view these debates as job interviews. when palin refused to answer reasonable questions, then proceeded to flirt and wink her way through the rest, i knew i could never vote for her. biden, however, was exactly the kind of employee i’d like to have around for the next 4-8 years.

Interesting tactics.
You dismiss the women as ‘evangelicals’ without any facts or basis.
Somehow you manage to toss in the word ‘bush’ in when referring to Governor Palin.
That is a very inappropriate sexual reference and very derogatory towards women in general and Govern Palin in specific.
And then you accuse me of having a Governor Palin fixation.

Republican Sarah Palin, governor of Alaska, boosted her standing with women during Thursday night’s vice presidential debate, surprising critics and reassuring fans, according to an early survey of voter views.”
…
“I believe she stood up to the pressure,” said Susan Watt, 52, a real estate broker from Eagle, Colo. “She speaks to me and she speaks for me and I think she did a good job.”
and
…
Even women Democrats with low expectations conceded that Palin met the mark.
“As a woman, I just wanted her to stop embarrassing us,” said Susannah Nation, 32, a human resources manager in Kentfield, Calif. “I’ve got to say I was impressed. She did not change my vote and I will never agree with her, but she was a studied candidate.”

1. TAX VOTE: Biden said McCain voted the exact same way as Obama to increase taxes on Americans earning just $42,000, but McCain DID NOT VOTE THAT WAY.
>>2. AHMEDINIJAD MEETING: Joe Biden lied when he said that Barack Obama never said that he would sit down unconditionally with Mahmoud Ahmedinijad of Iran. Barack Obama did say specifically, and Joe Biden attacked him for it. It’s on you tube.
>>3. OFFSHORE OIL DRILLING: Biden said, Drill we must. But Biden has opposed offshore drilling and
even compared offshore drilling to raping the Outer Continental Shelf.
>>4. TROOP FUNDING: Joe Biden lied when he indicated that John McCain and Barack Obama voted the same way against funding the troops in the field. John McCain opposed a bill that included a timeline, that the President of the United States had already said he would veto regardless of it s passage.
5. OPPOSING CLEAN COAL: Biden says he s always been for clean coal, but he just told a voter that he is against clean coal and any new coal plants in America and has a record of voting against clean coal and coal in the U.S. Senate. It’s crystal clear on you tube!
>>6. ALERNATIVE ENERGY VOTES: According to FactCheck.org, Biden is exaggerating and overstating John McCain’s record voting for alternative energy when he says he voted against it 23 times.
>>7. HEALTH INSURANCE: Biden falsely said McCain will raise taxes on people’s health insurance coverage — they get a tax credit to offset any tax hike. Independent fact checkers have confirmed this attack is false
>>8. OIL TAXES: Biden falsely said Palin supported a windfall profits tax in Alaska — she reformed the state tax and revenue system, it’s not a windfall profits tax.
>>9. AFGHANISTAN / GEN. MCKIERNAN COMMENTS: Biden said that top military commander in Iraq said the principles of the surge could not be applied to Afghanistan, but the commander of NATO’s International Security Assistance Force Gen. David D. McKiernan said that there were principles of the surge strategy, including working with tribes, that could be applied in Afghanistan.
10. REGULATION: Biden falsely said McCain weakened regulation — he actually called for more regulation on Fannie and Freddie in 2005.
11. IRAQ: When Joe Biden lied when he said that John McCain was dead wrong on Iraq , because Joe Biden shared the same vote to authorize the war and differed on the surge strategy where they John McCain has been proven right.
>>12. TAX INCREASES : Biden said Americans earning less than $250,000 wouldn t see higher taxes, but the
Obama-Biden tax plan would raise taxes on individuals making $200,000 or more.
>>13. BAILOUT: Biden said the economic rescue legislation matches the four principles that Obama laid out, but in reality it doesn t meet two of the four principles that Obama outlined on Sept. 19, which were that it include an emergency economic stimulus package, and that it be part of part of a
globally coordinated effort with our partners in the G-20.
14. REAGAN TAX RATES: Biden is wrong in saying that under Obama, Americans won’t pay any more in taxes then they did under Reagan.
15. Biden tried to match her on the Main Street cred, it rang slightly wacky. “Look,” he said, “All you have to do is go down Union Street with me in Wilmington or go to Katie’s Restaurant or walk into Home Depot with me, where I spend a lot of time.” Why? Is he moonlighting as a checkout clerk on the evening shift? Or is he stalking that nice lady in Lighting Fixtures? As for Katie’s Restaurant, ah, I’m sure it was grand but apparently it closed in 1990.
Read it and weep. The last one is my favorite. There is more coming out each day. His whole Lebanon discussion and the fact that Pakistan can hit Israel with nuclear missiles – NOT TRUE. The guy was spouting crap, but you lemmings don’t care about facts just as long as it fits.

The outrageous behavior of many women towards Sarah Palin will certainly cause other successful women to think twice before running for higher office.
—————————
What a bunch of whining crap.
ALL candidates get scutinized and brutalized by the media when they run for the highest offices in our nation.
It has always been this way. Gov Palin is nothing special in this regard. Welcome to national politics.
The implication that poor Sarah Palin has had to endure such terrible hardships (all five weeks of it) is a disgrace to accomplished women.
Obama has been getting blasted by smears, rumors, inuendo, media stories about his church, his family, his background, every comment he has ever made, etc for well over a year.
Does this mean that all African Americans should now “think twice” about running for higher office?
And Palin is not “well qualified” for the job. Her “executive experience” of being a mayor(of a town not much bigger than my daughter’s high school)is rediculous. She had to hire someone to run the day to day operations and ran her town millions into debt while she was mayor. That’s “experience”?
As governor of Alaska, she has the luxury of huge oil revenues and a non-diverse population. It’s the smallest population of any state – less than the city of Indianapolis. She collected more ear marks per capita than ANY OTHER governor and more than Obama.
She has little to no knowledge of international politics accept for what is written on her index cards. This has been more than evident when she doesn’t get to use them. Anyone can cram and say a few names, but she has demonstrated she does not really understand the issues that we, and other nations face. The other three in this election (and of course Hillary) already know about these things. They aren’t being schooled on it.
Oh, and by the way NICK AT NIGHT:
CNN, CBS, FOX, etc polls show Americans say Palin LOST the debate. (But we all know FOX is in the tank for Obama right?)
If Palin had “clear knowledge” of the subject matter, why did she not answer the questions? Instead she just read her rehearsed talking points. She even stated she wouldn’t answer the questions being asked. That does not indicate she knows anything but how to read her memorized and scripted lines.

Regarding the women eating their own comments:
It is not anti-woman for a woman to criticize another woman. It is not anti-woman for a woman to criticize Sarah Palin, Hillary Clinton, or any other female for their views or record.
It IS sexist and anti-woman to expect a woman to support a female candidate simply because of her sex. I am a moderate independent and consider myself a feminist — but I would rather vote for 100 qualified male candidates whose views I share before I vote for a single unqualified female candidate whose views I do not share — like Sarah Palin.

Plain’s Greatest Hits Vol I:
“That’s why I say I, like every American I’m speaking with, were ill about this position that we have been put in. Where it is the taxpayers looking to bail out. But ultimately, what the bailout does is help those who are concerned about the health care reform that is needed to help shore up our economy. Um, helping, oh, it’s got to be about job creation, too. Shoring up our economy, and getting it back on the right track. So health care reform and reducing taxes and reining in spending has got to accompany tax reductions, and tax relief for Americans, and trade — we have got to see trade as opportunity, not as, uh, competitive, um, scary thing, but one in five jobs created in the trade sector today. We’ve got to look at that as more opportunity. All of those things under the umbrella of job creation.”
This will go down as one of the greatest answers in election history!
Can’t wait for Vol II to be released!

Among these voters, there was improvement in views of both Sarah Palin and Joe Biden. 55% of these uncommitted voters said their opinion of Palin has changed for the better as a result of the debate.
These are all snapshot polls. The real issue is that Palin is back. She and Palin will systematically pick Obama apart – starting with his offensive comments regarding our troops killing innocent people in Afghanistan – ( Is this the Commander In Chief We Want)- and big bloated government.

McCain has Done Very Little Too Support Veterans
After listening to Palin last night you would think her and McCain really supports our troops. Here are some facts about McCain’s support for veterans
Fact: McCain repeatly voted against improved benefits for veterans and opposed the 21st GI Bill because it was too generous.
Fact: McCain voted against funding for veterans’ health care
Fact: Opposed an assured funding stream for veterans’ health care.
Fact: McCain and 12 other republicans voted against adding more than $430 million to the Department of Veterans Affair for outpatient care and treatment for veterans. He also voted against funding for the Veterans Affairs Department in 1994, 1996, 1999, 2000 2001
Fact: voted against establishing a $1billion trust fund to improve military health facilities by refusing to repeal tax cuts for those making more than $1million a year.
Fact: McCain Opposed $500 million for counseling services for Veterans with mental disorders.
Fact: Voted in support of Disabled veterans only 25% of the time from 2004-2005
Fact: McCain voted against providing automatic cost-of-living adjustments to veterans.
Fact: He opposed increasing spending on Tri-care and giving greater access to National Guard and Reservists
Fact: He voted to outsource jobs at military facilities.
Fact: He voted to repeal the minimum wage and against a clean pay raise for low income workers
Fact: He opposes The Employee Free Choice Act, and he crossed a picket line to be on the Jay Leno Show
Fact: McCain wants to privatize our social security. He supports risky personal account schemes that jeopardize seniors safety net and is considering raising retiring age and reducing cost-of –living adjustments. (look at the mess our economy is in as a result of risky investment) I just thought I’d share some facts. Oh yea McCain announce concession to Michigan today, and Palin find out about it when she read it in the news paper. Go to yahoo.com and read it.

If Palin was an older woman, or deemed less attractive and especially if she was a man the bar would not be so low. How insulting for women who really are excelling in every area.

My dad was so premature he fit in a shoe box. He was lucky he lived since he was born at home.
Who is that ‘lady’ over there who is proposing encouraging the elderly and disabled to ‘be put to sleep’ because they are a financial burden to society?
I still remember those doctors in Scotland who left the hospital and tried to blow up the airport with their car. Now that is the kind of Doctor I want – NOT.

YES, how offensive! We all know that only soldiers and evil people get killed in wars.
Innocent people are never harmed when we bomb the hell out of a country. We have “smart” weapons that only kill bad people.
——————————————————————————–
There is a difference between civilian casualty of war and an inference that we have intent or do not care that we kill innocent people. Reckless language anyway you cut it – unfit leader. Very uninspiring to say the least!

Dear Jenn,
Yes, it is so insulting for those voters to elect Sarah Palin to the city council.
and then to re-elect to the city council. The nerve of them. They might as well have poked a finger in your eye.
and then even more insulting for them to vote her in as mayor of Wasilla. What were they thinking?
and then doubly insulting for them to re-elect her as mayor of Wasilla.
and then the nerve of them… They all go and elect her as Governor of Alaska.
Yep, all those evil voters just out to insult you.
How insulting for those “other women who are really excelling everywhere”
And she certainly should not have made those clutch baskets in her championship basketball game either.
Why she just goes out of her way to insult you time after time.

If Obama was a white guy would he be where he is? Geraldine Ferraro was right – NO. You can play that game all night. The reality is Obama is where he is because he is black, has charicma, and has a very big political machine (the old boy’s network) behind him. Sarah Palin is where she is because she’s a woman, good looking, charismatic. the big difference – she’s grass roots. She wasn’t spat out by a Clinton-like political machine or by the Chicago Democratic machine as Obama was. She essentially is self made. Unusual and refreshing in this day and age. Surprised as a woman you don’t see this appeal.

What tactic are you going to use to defame her?
Posted by: NickAtNight | October 4, 2008, 12:16 am 12:16 am
First of all spell check gals…”did she go to far”? in first paragraph is obviously “too”.
Second, I am so tired of women eating their own, as Katie Couric tried to do by editing this gotcha interview, which honestly I only saw snippets of…don’t care how she did…McCain is my man…Obama is too scarey in the #1 spot on their ticket (honestly I wouldn’t vote for him in the #2 spot if Hillary was in the #1).
Professional women, I feel, do not support one another if the light is shining a little too bright on another. Katie being trashed some months back knows what sexism in our country is all about and how tough it is to play with the big boys.
Palin did great…should get out there and do every interview with male journalists, do radio interviews and keep speaking to MIDDLE AMERICA. Not everyone has the liberal elitism of West Coast/East Coast.
I was a big Hillary supporter who switched to McCain immediately after Hill withdrew and was cautiously pleased when he chose Palin. She will be great and learn alot in four years. She’s been at this National campaign thing for 36 days…Biden 36 years, it seems. I’m not waiting another 24 years to see a woman on a ticket. Our country is so behind with female political leaders.
I’ll take a 2 year Governor as VP over a two minute Senator as Prez (with horrible judgement on friends and associates, i.e. terriorists, criminals, and racists, ANYDAY).
McCAIN/PALIN NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS IN THE NEXT 30 DAYS.

I saw all the same paid Obot bloggers on here, and it’s funny, everything they say about Gov. Palin I feel about, uh, ah, um, ugh Barack Hussein Obama.
He worked out that stammer he usually has at debates, with four days of practice on his script in Florida for the first debate. They changed the format of the debates and I liked the format that BO had with Hillary and she cleaned his clock everytime.
I want to see and Obama – Palin debate…that seems more fair, and Biden really loves John McCain more than BO. We all know that…HE SAID HE WANTED TO RUN WITH HIM AND OBAMA WASN’T READY, BUT WAS CLEAN AND NEAT FOR AN AFRICAN AMERICAN.
Palin got through to Middle America and she did her job….not everyone is a liberal elitist on East Coast or West Coast….I live in L.A. and loved her!
Obama not fit to be CIC…go back to the Senate and put in a little time, and do some housecleaning with your friends and associates. Oh, that’s right you already threw everyone under the bus WHEN YOU WERE FORCED TO….GRANNY, WRIGHT, TRINITY, REZKO, FARRAKHAN (when Hill publicly forced you to), AYERS……AND THE LIST GOES ON. BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA IS UNACCEPTABLE!

Funny, the radio guys I listen to said Biden put them to sleep. My own husband said Biden sounded like he was lecturing.
Face it…..the 70 million tuned in to Gov. Palin…..Biden is a BORE, Politics as Usual…NO CHANGE….Obama screwed that theme up when he picked 65 year old, 37 years in the Senate Biden.
CHANGE WE NEED…..McCAIN/PALIN.

That’s right…Gov. Palin is no Hillary, and I respect Hillary, who rode the coat tails of her husband. Gov. You CANNOT DISCREDIT HER UNLESS YOU TELL ME WHAT THE HELL YOU’VE DONE FOR THIS COUNTRY!

Communism is around the corner folks, with the Obama brainwashing….kids not old enough to spell the word “President” singing some pro Obama song…of course, instructed by a left wing nut job in Venice, here in Calif. Freaky, wierd….could be little Korean kids singing the same thing…pretty soon they’ll be issuing uniforms with that wierd Obama logo since he hates our flag. He takes cues from his friend Oprah with the “O” symbol. What is his problem with our flag?…throws thousands of them away at the convention (rescued by a Republican vendor), paints over a huge flag on the tail of his jet to paint his “O” faux flag symbol. Really, does he feel more affinity for the African flag or Indonesian flag. I know Trinity chuch for 20 years, had him pledge an unapologitic allegiance to Africa, the motherland…..and that was part of his mind set…and I’M NOT OK WITH THAT.

Viewers tuned in for Palin to see a possible wreck. It’s the same effect as looking at a crash on the highway. You know you shouldn’t want to see it, but you do. There was no other reason than morbid curiosity, especially given her bizarre answers to Gibson and Couric.
She avoided a collision, but Biden dominated the debate on substance. He was informed, affable, and related to the American worker.
The GOP rejoices today and the media hopes for a closer race, because the wreck did not happen. However, the undecideds are overwhelmingly pointing to Biden as the victor in various polls.
Sometimes the reality isn’t as exciting as the hype.
As a female voter, I judge candidates on substance. In this regard, Biden won easily.

I can’t really imagine Condi or Kaye Bailey Hutchinson changing the subject and winking with a come-on smile to convince us to vote Republican.
Of course they would have known the answers and not just have memorized the talking points.
Americans should think twice about voting for an elderly candidate who seems to have chosen Miss Alaska as his running mate.

Hey “thinking”….Biden got all folksy by saying “Katie, it’s time to be Patriotic” and step up to the plate and pay our taxes for those that have had their hands out for years.
And Biden gets all floksy when he wells up about his kids and his first wife and being the VP pick (I loved when he cried that time on camera HE HAD TISSUES)……SO BIDEN IS “FOLKSY” TOO, IT’S JUST THE MEDIA GIVES HIM A PASS.
HE HAS CRIED THREE TIMES AND CHOKED UP A COUPLE OF TIMES AND PALIN WOULD BE REAMED FOR THAT. HE HAS HAD TWO DOZEN GAFFES (AT LEAST)….BUT LIBERAL MSM COULD CARE LESS.
OH, AND HEY, O.J. GUILTY AND GOING TO JAIL FOR A VERY LONG TIME…..FINALLY.

According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Alaska’s rape rate is 2.5 times the national average. Alaska also has the highest rate per capita of men murdering women. Ninety percent of Alaskans would vote to increase funding for victim service programs because, according to the coalition, “programs are in dire need of more funding in order to serve the sheer volume of victims.” Seventy-five percent of Alaskans have been or know someone who has been the victim of sexual assault or domestic violence. Alaska’s domestic violence shelters, sexual assault services and programs for survivors have seen a relatively small increase in funding. In 2008, the state budget included an additional $300,000 in funding for victims services programs. In 2009, according to Alaska’s Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, Governor Palin’s budget includes an increase in funds to help shelters offset the higher costs of fuel, utilities and insurance.
But the extraordinary levels of violence against women in the state of Alaska and the underlying causes still require a much greater level of state-level funding and oversight. According to the Alliance for Reproductive Justice, who lobbied to address Alaska’s rates of domestic violence and sexual assault, when explicitly asked to address these issues in 2007, the Governor did not respond. The Alliance has this to say on their web site:
Governor Palin did not deliver and did not take a leadership role on any of these issues. In fact, this year, when there was a 7 billion dollar state surplus she did not step up to the plate for the women and children of Alaska…we were truly disappointed with her lack of action on this critical public health issue.
Most of Alaska’s funding for sexual assault and violence against women programs comes from the federal government. This has been intersting. I noticed how people are taking things so personally. This is for the person who got mad because I questioned Palin’s lack of involvement. Oh yea let me stand corrected when I stated Alaska has the highest rate of violence against women and chilldren.

Roe vs. Wade – its interesting to know that McCorvey revealed herself to be the “Jane Roe” of the famous case, McCorvery had not aborted, but had given birth to the baby in question. In the case, she claimed that her pregnancy was the result of rape. She now claims that to have been untrue and that she had been the “pawn” of two young and ambitious lawyers Sarah Weddington and Linda Coffee – turns out McCorvey and her long-time partner were lesbians. It also turns out that Bernard Nathanson who started this NARAL-Pro Choice America grassroots performed his first abortion on a girlfriend he got pregnant, then went on to perform over 75,000 abortions in NYC and lied about the dangers of abortions. Later when ultrasound was developed his views on abortion changed and he made a Documentary” The Silent Scream” and wrote books Aborting America and The Hand of God. Nathanson as a younger man was Pro-Choice and a Jewish Atheist he later converted to Catholicism in 1996 – But the damage of this organization marches on without him. He now is a staunch supporter of the Pro-Life Movement as so is McCorvey the” Jane Roe”. Obama is not only a supported of this, but is a defender and accepted Millions of dollars for NARAL for his campaign – NARAL used to support Hillary thru out her political career – NARAL subbed Hillary since she lost the nominee. I will never support a candidate like Obama who supports this! McCain/Palin for Pro-Life.

What Sarah Palin and millions of other women have had to over come is the perception that she should be answering Joe’s phone. Decades ago, it became apparent to me on the college campus I once attended, that the male administrators got the titles and the money, but the women secretaries did all the heavy lifting and were the ones who really made things work. Can you imagine what would happen if Sarah Palin would say that FDR ‘got on television’… She’d be laughed out of town. For Joe, it’s no problemo. Go Sarah!

Talking about low standards. I guess when you only have a little to offer, you have to stoop down. When I moved to the state I now live in, the school where my children attended has significantly lower achievement scores than what I was used to. So, my choices were either to move my kids to a better school or allow them to be low achievers. The decision was obvious. We should never accept mediocrity when the alternatives are better. If the republicans want to consider Palin a viable candidate, then that just speaks to their mediocrity. As for me, I want the best for mine and the country. I moved my kids to a school where they were challenged to excellence. That was the best decision I have ever made in my life. This election is a life changing event and we should treat it like that and stop the sham games.

I guess Palin went to talk to TBoone Pickens to find out about alternatives to oil, since it is clear that drilling is not the solution to our engergy crisis. So, without oil, Palin has nothing to talk about. Once we free ourselves from oil, Palin will have to go back to Wasilla and run for beauty queen. If the stress of this campaign doesn’t start to wrinkle her.

Talk of Palin winning this debate is ridiculous. If that was a test in college she would have failed. She refused to answer questions outright, and gave the same answer to several questions, always falling back on energy or being “folksy”. Meanwhile Biden was knowledgeable, stretching the truth a few times, but no more than many of the stretches that Palin made. And I wasn’t even impressed with her views on energy policy as she seemed to focus on oil and natural gas, saying little about alternatives. There is an obvious difference between the experiences of Obama and Palin. Obama answered all questions in his debate with clear answers, holidng his own or beating McCain. Palin lost miserably on knowledge, and that is frightening at a time with two wars and a financial crisis facing our country. She is all fluff and no substance, something that Republicans keep trying to push on Obama but that I believe they should take a long look at themselves.

I have to be honest. As a republican women with children, I am very scared and very concern this is why: Sarah Palin has proven to be more of a character than an intellect this is a fact. Wehn you are running for such an importan position like the vp why we Americans have to set our standards low. I am so sorry we should st our standards high after all this is such an importand job. I also so scared given the issues with McCain health and age that Palin may become our next president just the tough of it make me very concern and scared as a mother. Yes, I think Sarah Palin has a cute personality, but this is not about look nor personalitys. I will repeat what I said before if McCain was yunger in good health than yes I will fell more confortable with this pick. The fact is that Sarah Palin does not have the intellect nor the capacity to lead this nation. I have to honest and think country first and for this time around the Obama/Biden ticket is the best suited for this task. I will vote for the safety of this nation and for economic prosperity. Biden proved that he is smart, articulate and knows the issues in regards to foreign Policy, Sarah is cluless. Barack Obama has proven to very smart, calm, and rally has shown huge improvement, he is clearly ready.

SOME RAMBLING THOUGHTS ON AMERICA
Fear is such a strange motivator, but at the same time it is a frightening and dangerous one. This country’s foundation of ideas and principles is what makes this country great and different from all other countries in the world- our Founding Fathers, the Declaration of Independence, and the Constitution are our inspiration and solace.
At this moment in time our nation has drifted far from the principles and vision laid out by our forefathers – individual liberty and responsibility, state’s rights, and minimization of federal government intrusion.
For years we have drifted toward a centralization of and dependency on federal government – a physical and psychological dependency that is ruining this country. History will show the turning point to be the Great Depression – a time of economic disaster. This point needs emphasis – a time of economic disaster. Does this sound familiar?
What was originally espoused as a temporary measure, with assumed good intent (the Great Deal), to help those in immediate need soon became part of the fabric of American society and for some a cultural and political way of thinking. The “new” Democrat party seized upon this moment of opportunity (ie., an economic crisis) to maintain and implement their vision of government controlled programs for American society. This changed the landscape of American culture and politics forever.
We now find ourselves at a time of economic ‘crisis’ – again, fear has been the main motivator. Therefore, it is no surprise that we looked to government to bail us out – we just passed one of the largest socialist principled laws in American history. We have come so far down the road of government dependency in our society it has created a physical and, more alarmingly, psychological mindset of dependency on the federal government for answers. There were many voices of reason on both sides of the political isle that had alternative, capitalist entrepreneurial principled solutions – American generated economic solutions – that were simply ignored.
As stated, America is in a financial ‘crisis’ never seen before since the Great Depression – so we are told. Historically, the world has made extreme and dangerous decisions at a time of economic turmoil – in fact, any rise of power of an extremist personality or a monumental conflict in world history can arguably be solely attributed to economic unrest. Whether it be fascist or communist regimes- the common theme is the implementation of a centralized governmental power resulting in dyer consequences not only for its people, but for the world. Government controlled policies on the thoughts and behavior of individuals – ie., fascism, communism, socialism and their subsequent takeover– take advantage of the vulnerability of individual human freedom in times of crisis.
America is and should remain different. In 1776, the beginnings of our nation was an experiment never before seen or experienced on the world stage. The elitists of Europe scoffed at the folksy commoners of this new country with arrogant expectations of failure. But we did not fail. We struggled and fought – from within and against outside forces – for our freedom and for our newborn country. We became unique. Rather than descend from an historical mindset of dictatorships, kings and queens as have our European friends, we now became the descendants of revolutionaries – free thinkers. This is our foundation. This is our cross to bear, our obligation forever.
Individuals innately desire freedom – freedom of thought, freedom of action, freedom of liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Our Declaration of Independence guarantees the pursuit of happiness – not happiness itself. Happiness is a self achieved fulfillment, not a government directive.
At the same time, democracy as a social organization may not be a natural human tendency. Though we may espouse and desire individual freedoms we seek comfort and security and, therefore, are vulnerable to extremism in times of unrest. During such times of conflict, we gravitate to individuals who can inspire and lead. We put our trust in such leadership. It is this trust during hard times that may blind us – this is the vulnerability of human freedom and democracy.
Democracy and the maintenance of its ideals and principles is hard work– it should never be comfortable and taken for granted. Though it can be the most powerful force and inspiration in the world it is at the same time fragile and can be taken away in an instant or gradually eroded as its principles slowly fade with time. America has become lazy both intellectually and politically. We have insulated ourselves from our surroundings with our excesses and self gratification. We are selfish – whether it be with our nice cars or our expectation of federal government handouts – we have lost our way.
We are now at a crossroad, a moment in history that will change the sociopolitical future of America. Now, more than ever, is not the time to compromise the core principles laid down by our Founding Fathers.
Senator Obama has no doubt benefited politically from this present economic turmoil. We must ask ourselves – Is he the solution? Does his vision exude and support the principles and ideals laid down by our Founding Fathers?
Senator Obama will open the arms of the federal government – the likes of which we have not seen since the Great Depression (one trillion dollars in new government programs!!) – to solve our problems and lessen the burden of individual responsibility. These arms will wrap around us smothering and extinguishing the glowing remains of the ideals of the American Revolution of 1776.
The growth of the federal government and the ever increasing dependency and reliance on centralized government will further entrench the American mindset to such expectations and therefore, make it increasingly difficult to change.

cont’d
If we were to hold up the ideals and vision of Senator Obama to the principles of our Founding Fathers it can only be viewed as radical and foreign. It is government control at the expense of individual freedom – the exact principles we revolted against – the belief system our ancestors fought with their blood and their lives to prevent from ever returning.
Not all battles and wars are fought with guns. It is time to stand up as individuals and demonstrate to America and the world that we are different and will remain unique. We will never fall prey to the elitists we so soundly rejected in the past. We are Americans – we are individuals who will always come together independent of any government directive or mandate to support one another and achieve the unachievable

Dear “Jess-Soccer Mom from Canton Ohio”
For an alleged Republican you managed to cite every single slander and talking point of the far left.
I don’t think you were honest with us. This is a classic lie that the hard left uses when blogging and calling talk radio. They claim to be ‘life long republicans’ but then cite all of the hard lefts positions.
So please, next time TELL THE TRUTH.
First, I am sorry you are scared. Perhaps you should buy a gun to protect yourself.
Second, Governor Palin is not running to be an ‘intellect’, she is running to be Vice President. Those are different jobs. She has shown herself to be a very qualified politician and leader. She was effective on her City Council. She was effective as Mayor. She was effective as Governor of Alaska.
Third, I don’t know why would be scared about Senator McCains health and age. His mother is still alive and kicking. On the other hand, both of Obama’s parents are deceased at young ages. Given the documented short life expectancy of his line, I would be more worried about Obama dying of ill health in office than McCain.
Fourth, If the unthinkable did happened, Governor Palin has shown herself to be a competent and popular Governor. She will do a fabulous job as President of the United States.
Fifth, By the way, we have had Presidents disabled in office before. My daughter did a paper on our first woman ‘President’ – Edith Bolling Galt Wilson.
Sixth, I think you are being thrown off by her good looks and her buoyant personality. She is far tougher than she looks. She got the nickname Barracuda from her agressive style of play in basketball. She must have nerves of steel to be able to hit the free throws necessary to get her team
to win the championship.
Seventh, just because she can ‘talk folksy’ does not make her an intellectual lightweight. She is clearly very sharp.
Eighth, if you are voting for the safety of this nation, why would you vote for someone who’s career was started in the house of a man who bombed the pentagon?
Nineth, Why would you vote for someone who was one of the top receivers of Fanny-mae and Freddie-mac money? The corruption of those two organizations has almost completely sunk this country this month. Dodd, Obama and Clinton are all high on the lists as defenders of these two companies.
Tenth, Biden showed that he does not know the issues and is clearly very confused on a lot of facts. If we had followed the advice of Obama/Biden, we would have fled from Iraq instead of surging. The terrorists would have then taken over the country and would be expanding into the other neighboring countries and extending their attacks on our country. Good grief.

Subject: Head of NOW. LA chapter Endorses Palin
Carson, CA-
The head of the LA chapter of National Organization for Women has just endorsed Gov Palin @ campaign rally. Not speaking NOW or her chapter she said but as an individual. ” This is what a feminist looks like,” she just before handing it over to SLP.

Gov. Palin rocks and engages me in politics in a way I was only engaged before with Hillary. So I will be praying Gov. Palin and Sen. McCain are voted into office on Nov. 4.
I was a Hillary supporter until she withdrew and I immediately shifted to McCain AS OBAMA IS JUST UNACCEPTABLE to me…..UNACCEPTABLE.
Thank goodness, the creep kid from the Tenn. Democrat on BO campaign has been indicted and it could be $250,000 and 5 years in prison….for hacking into Gov. Palin’s email account. There was nothing there of interest…WONDER IF THAT COULD BE SAID OF B. HUSSEIN? And if the tables were turned this would have been wholly hell.
LOVED HILLARY, LIKE BIDEN, CAN’T STAND OBAMA’S LACK OF JUDGEMENT AND EXPERIENCE AND CHARACTER.
McCAIN/PALIN ALL THE WAY!

Ask Biden to take you to that resturant he spoke of that hasn’t been there in 20 YEARS! Wrong President and TV wasn’t invented when he referred to the Great Depression…..BIDEN HAS HAD MORE GAFFES IN THE LAST TWO WEEKS THAN PALIN HAS EVER MADE. YOU CAN’T CALL HER A GAFFE MACHINE…or a cryier, like Joe….THREE TIMES HE’S CRIED SINCE RUNNING AS V.P. AND ONCE HE EVEN USED TISSUES….can you imagine if Gov. Palin did that?
