Race & The Vote (Cont’d)

We thought our piece on this issue pretty well debunked the so-called "Bradley Effect" last night, but whether people lie to pollsters or not doesn’t mean there isn’t a great deal of latent racism surrounding this presidential campaign. The following opinions were given to the New York Times’ Adam Nossiter

"He (Obama) is neither-nor. He’s other. It’s in the Bible. Come as one. Don’t create other breeds." — Ricky Thompson, Mobile, AL

"I would think of him as I would of another of mixed race. God taught the children of Israel not to intermarry. You should be proud of what you are, and not intermarry." – Glnn Reynolds, Martinsdale, VA

"He’s going to tear up the rose bushes and plant a watermelon patch." — James Halsey, Mobile, AL

"I’ve always been against the blacks," says Bud Rowell — though he says that now that he has three biracial grandchildren he has "found out they were human beings, too." — Citronelle, AL

If people are willing to express such opinions for the record, one can infer that a great many more harbor similar feelings — and keep these to themselves.

I’ve just read an excerpt from Michelle Obama’s Princton Thesis, and frankly,,,,,,it’s quite disturbing. — I can say this because as a senior in high school, I was bussed from my neighborhood school to one in the inner city, “with lots of problems” as a means to counter that type of thought process. — Michelle Obama’s intellectually refined racism should give all
Americans pause for deep concern.
Now maybe she’s changed, but she sure sounds like someone with an axe to
grind with America . Will the press let Michelle get a free pass over her obviously
racist comment about American whites? I am sure that it will.

Unfortunately, most of us have worked with “affirmative action” blacks who lied about their employment qualifications and if given the job, were unable to do it properly and tried to blame others for their failures. It is hard to get past this kind of prejudice and try to be convinced that someone like Obama, who pulled all sorts of dirty tricks to get where he is, would really be able to do the job of POTUS.

In her senior thesis at Princeton , Michele Obama, the wife of Barack Obama stated that America was a nation founded on ‘crime and hatred’.
Moreover, she stated that whites in America were ‘ineradicably racist’.
The 1985 thesis, titled ‘Princeton-Educated Blacks and the Black Community’ was written under her maiden name, Michelle LaVaughn Robinson.
Michelle Obama stated in her thesis that to ‘Whites at Princeton , it often seems as if, to them, she will always be Black first…’ However, it was reported by a fellow black classmate, ‘If those ‘Whites at Princeton ‘ really saw Michelle as one who always would ‘be Black first,’ it seems that she gave them that impression’.
Most alarming is Michele Obama’s use of the terms ‘separationist’ and ‘integrationist’ when describing the views of black people.
Mrs. Obama clearly identifies herself with a ‘separationist’ view of race.
‘By actually working with the Black lower class or within their communities as a result of their ideologies, a separationist may better understand the desperation of their situation and feel more hopeless about a resolution as opposed to an integrationist who is ignorant to their plight.’
Obama writes that the path she chose by attending Princeton would likely lead to her ‘further integration and/or assimilation into a white cultural and social structure that will only allow me to remain on the periphery of society; never becoming a full participant.’
Michele Obama clearly has a chip on her shoulder.

You call those remarks “latent” racism? I think they are all nakedly racist remarks.
I’ve always wondered if conservative Christians in this country who harbor racism have ever read beyond the Old Testament. The couple of quotes above have confirmed my suspicion.

You say you just read them, well what are they?

Posted by: JR | October 15, 2008, 12:05 pm 12:05 pm

Planewizard, I don’t see anything “racist” about those comments, they were her observations at the time or do you somehow see those as the same as

Its sad to think that in today’s world people are still so ignorant of the facts. As a white person, I can only say that these ‘white’ folks are a true emabrrassment to the entire nation.

Posted by: Dee | October 15, 2008, 12:10 pm 12:10 pm

Racism is alive and kicking. But, I think even some racist voters will vote for Obama. This economy is hurting everyone. I think self-preservation trumps racist views. It won’t be all, but it will be enough to tip the scales to the Democrats. I also think many more who are tired of racism, will vote for Obama.

Posted by: Think | October 15, 2008, 12:11 pm 12:11 pm

The most religious parts of the country also seem to be the most racist. I hope some of these folks can stop the cycle of racism and find the true definition of their faith.

Lets hear from the other side also.
Lets start with Obama, His view on Aids. “Obama has said he would work to prevent HIV transmission through sex education and testing in minority communities.” There are poor white communities that have a major aids problem, no need to test them.
I was called a racist because I was not voting for Obama.
Mr Obama has taken Race Relations Back 20 years. He has pitted people against people. Group against Group. American against American.
I have heard more detrimental statements from People of the African American than from anyone else.
I fear walking through neigborhhoods now, that I have my entire life.
That is acceptable and it is acceptable that almost all blacks are voting for a Black man, because he is black.
Of course the votes may be for the reason of the reparations they say they were promised.

Posted by: ah_heck | October 15, 2008, 12:17 pm 12:17 pm

Planewizard,
I read Michelle Obama’s thesis. That was her perspective 20+ years ago. Don’t you remember your high school and college years. Everyone had their own cliques. In this case; Princeton… everyone stuck with their own kind. She was uncomfortable and felt as if she didn’t belong.
You conservatives can’t fault her for that.
People forget that Obama is HALF WHITE and raised by the white half of his family.
Your guy McCain is down in EVERY poll and EVERY swing state poll. I guess the GOP want to use to fear tactics. Not this year. The Dems finally nominated a fighter.

Posted by: Vanessa | October 15, 2008, 12:17 pm 12:17 pm

this is done.
the only people who race really mean that much to …in any kind of negative way
are the people who are older than 65 and the people who have the mentality and or education of a 7th grade drop out.
Most of America laughs at those people for giving this any weight…
in our minds…
it’s fun y and we feel bad for those people who are trapped in a mindset
and wonder if they think the world is flat…
and that dinosaurs are a creation of the “liberal media”.

I think most people’s stereotypes of race are really based on economic and education disparities. Race is just an easy way to explain away our problems.
I grew up in an affluent Republican suburb and I’ll vote for Obama without hesitation. I don’t think the Republican policies of deregulation have served this country well.

Posted by: hope springs | October 15, 2008, 12:21 pm 12:21 pm

hIn my opinion if Mr. Obama is elected, I see the race issue growing wider that it has been in a long time. Mr Obama and his wife will not be able to keep the African-Americans and whites both happy at the same time. Any movement in either direction as shown favoritism.

Posted by: rpgtank | October 15, 2008, 12:24 pm 12:24 pm

Mack, I’ll never change your mind, but I think there are many people who do understand. Poverty and ignorance breed crime. If you think the education we provide to inner city students is on par with the students in affluent suburbs, then there is no point trying to engage. It’s not a race issue, it’s a poverty issue.
I’ve seen your posts before and they aren’t terribly elegant or compelling so don’t feel like you need to respond. I already know where you stand.

This is nothing but another article to pray on white guilt just a little bit more. obama wants you to feel racist if you don’t vote for him. So to get the white people that are McCain supporters on his side he wants them to feel racist. Just another dirty trick playing with peoples emotions.

Posted by: mogo | October 15, 2008, 12:50 pm 12:50 pm

mogo, That’s so silly. If you feel guilt that’s your issue. Vote for the candidate you think will do the best job. The Republicans have brought us eight years of bad policy, so for me it’s Obama. If I need validation, then I’ll ask someone I love for a hug.

There has not been much evidence of a Bradley effect in elections lately. This year there could well be a “reverse” Bradley Effect: people who plan to vote for Obama but do not want to admit it to their GOP friends.

Posted by: William J. LePetomaine | October 15, 2008, 1:02 pm 1:02 pm

This is actually getting rather tiring. As we dissect white voters’ secret agendas – let’s look at this fact:
97% OF BLACK VOTERS VOTING FOR THE BLACK CANDIDATE
I have personally asked many people supporting Obama what it is about him that they like – not “hope” and “change,” but specific policies. Except for 4 individuals (and I’ve asked/posted blogs asking probably 300-400 people this question), I have never gotten a specific answer to this. What I have received is:
1. He’s a Democract (voting party line only);
2. He’s black with a historic campaign;
3. He’s not a Republican (voting party line only again);
4. He’ll “change” the country – with no specific way he’ll change it. Apparently, Obama just being president will change the U.S.
In the vast majority of exchanges I’ve had with Obama supporters, it’s gone: “Why do you support him?”
“He’s change/hope”
“Yes, but how will he accomplish that?”
“He’s change/hope”
“I understand, but what specifically will he do to accomplish that?”
“You’re a racist” or “You want to hold the black people down” or “You’re afraid of change” or “You’re a Republican trying to pretend to be a Democrat” (I was a Democrat supporting Hillary Clinton.)
So, how are many of these Obama supporters NOT racist, and why doesn’t the media cover that? Could it be fear? White guilt? I don’t know, but I’m not going to be guilted or pressured into voting for a candidate whom I don’t believe is good for our country.

Posted by: no thanks obama | October 15, 2008, 1:04 pm 1:04 pm

Things are really going to far now! Huff post reports on Rush Limbaughs recent radio commentary on blacks. It is so blatantly rascist and ties Obama & all blacks to militancy …if the media doesnt finally take a strong stand on this horrible rhetoric then it is being totally irresponsible. If this type of broadcast isnt inciting violence against blacks then nothing is! Free speech is one thing…promoting hatred is another!!

Posted by: Dee | October 15, 2008, 1:04 pm 1:04 pm

I look at the alleged voter fraud and I look at the vast numbers of blacks who are (many of them have said outright) voting for Obama simply because he is black, and I don’t understand how that’s not racism.
If Obama really is different and change from the norm, why would he want to win this election in great part (apparently) due to the color of his skin?
They talk about the “Bradley effect,” but I wonder more about the “white guilt” effect. How many people are bowing to the pressure and abuse they’ve suffered at the hands of Obama supporters?

Posted by: tracim813 | October 15, 2008, 1:07 pm 1:07 pm

no thanks obama, If you have guilt see a therapist. Vote for McCain if that’s your thing. The policies of deregulation are exactly why I’m voting for Obama. McCain thinks less government is always better, look where that thought has gotten us today. Oversight is critical in the financial services industry (just ask my 401k).
My hunch is you want to see bias from the other side and so you do.

Posted by: mogo | October 15, 2008, 1:14 pm 1:14 pm

Lots of Greeks voted for Michael Dukakis is 1988. Is that racist or just identifying with a candidate?
I think racism comes in when you don’t vote for a qualified candidate solely because of their race.
You can twist and turn and revolt against political correctness, but the arguments aren’t holding up folks.
Obama is winning because he has been discussing the issues and showing his composure under pressure.

Wow, Planewizard. I have to hand it to you. You actually read a thesis and understood it??? Amazing. Most of McCain/Palin supporters couldn’t read a sentence from the back of a cereal box and understand what it said. Sorry you were so “disturbed” by what she had to say. Sadly, what she said was true and that was her perspective back in 1985. You wouldn’t want to hear what my perspective was back in 1968, I assure you, when this Nation was engaged in another “illegal” War and Nixon got elected President. Ugh, talk about nasty times.

Barack Obama’s Fight the Smears Web site had to make some adjustments when one of the alleged “smears” turned out to be true.
The political blog Gateway Pundit reports that Thursday the Web site read, “Fact: Barack was never an ACORN trainer and never worked for ACORN in any other capacity.”
But the Cleveland Leader newspaper discovered documents proving that Obama did work as a trainer for the voter registration group. The Obama camp claims its candidate trained for the position but was never hired.
The Web page now reads, “Fact: ACORN never hired Obama as a trainer, organizer, or any type of employee.”

The Obama campaign has been playing the race card over and over again. This is a campaign that in the primaries succeeded in painting Bill Clinton as a racist. Now, Clinton, with all of his flaws, this is a man who throughout his career from Governor of Arkansas to president of the United States and beyond, has been a great and sincere friend of African-Americans who shared and tried to advance their aspirations. So if you can pull off a trick like that on Bill Clinton, you can pull it off on Republicans.

All we ever hear about is how race will have a bearing on the election. But only in the sense of bias against the “black” candidate. We never hear about the vote for the “black” candidate based soley on the fact he is black. Is the fear of being politically correct the reason which prevents the media from reporting on this side of the race vote? Let’s be fair and not just show one side of the coin! Or are we afraid of offending certain people?

Posted by: MadMex | October 15, 2008, 1:39 pm 1:39 pm

racists who commit race related crimes should be put on a list EXACTLY like sex offenders .
i am going to make sure to write several letters to my new liberal representatives, at all levels of government, emphasizing the urgent need for such legislation ,and i hope to be able to urge everyone i can to do the same.
racism has no place in this country . if you are racist, you are in the wrong country. please leave now…thanks.

Posted by: bah | October 15, 2008, 1:41 pm 1:41 pm

MadMex,
I think people identify with people who are similar to themselves. If they like a candidate’s positions, then their bias moves towards the candidate who is more like themselves. That is not the same as not voting for someone simply because you think that their race somehow makes them inferior.
These things are complicated.
Obama is winning because of the economy — not because he has the support of most of the African American community.

Posted by: Grey State | October 15, 2008, 1:45 pm 1:45 pm

I liked the explanation that the ACORN money was not given to register but only to get out the vote. I could see how that could be an arduous job if you have to round up the Dallas cowboys an Mickey Mouse and put them on a bus to the voting booth. ACORN is not only a specialist in voter fraud, it is also a fairly radical grassroots organization which has been involved in a lot of left-wing causes. And it fits in a pattern of Obama’s associations. You have got ACORN. You got William Ayers. You got Jeremiah Wright. The central tenet of his church is an opposition to “middle classness,” as he calls it, a ridiculing and an attempt to steer African-Americans away from the values of the middle class. You have got Obama campaigning on the values of the middle class. So you have the valid question of who is this guy, what does he believe? Was he just cynical in the old days in which he had associations with ACORN and Ayers and Wright, or is there something about him and his ideology and identity which he hasn’t answered?
And I think that’s why ACORN is important. It is not only a fraud issue. It is an issue of association and values and core beliefs.

I disagree with your comment on people saying they are for Obama and then not voting for him because of color. A lot of the whites are voting strictly for their party regardless of what they believe or color. The blacks are voting strictly color. I would bet that at least 90% of the new registered voters are black and they have been encouraged to vote because of color. Some of these new voters have been pushed to register and can barely read, write and are not tax paying citizens. These are citizens that are already getting everything for free. The news media are already biased and pushing Obama. I hope you are ready for the changes that you want so much. Maybe, with the new changes I can join the free ranks also. Thanks

ABC News’ and the greater mainstream media’s analysis of the “race factor” in this election is laughably absent of the most obvious component: the fact that Obama being black is a net POSITIVE for his campaign. Yes, of course there are a good number of racist whites who will not vote for Obama because he’s black. But there are FAR MORE people who WILL vote for Obama specifically, or in part, because he’s black. The African American vote (99%, and it’s all based on political ideology, right?) is the most obvious place to start. This at least cancels out the toothless ignorant white vote who will show up solely to vote against a black man. But more importantly, there’s the millions upon millions of white Americans who are almost as enamored of the idea that a black man could become President — either based on true racial altruism or on a degree of white guilt. The majority of white America is not racist (they really do “have black friends,” and work and live side by side with black people), and they are tired of hearing about racial strife and dealing with the real detriments of racism, the costs of which are borne by us all. Geraldine Ferraro was right, and grossly vilified for it. I’m so tired of seeing forwarded internet messages asking “if the circumstances were flipped,” in which the authors assume Obama’s biggest obstacle is his race. In combination with his eloquence, it’s one of his biggest assets. The real question is what if he were a white, ultra-liberal, first-term senator from Illinois with no discernible accomplishments? He would never had made it past the Democratic primary, much less won against McCain.

BARACK OBAMA IS NOT BLACK OR WHITE… HE IS BOTH RACES AND WE AS “AMERICANS,” MUST KNOW BY THIS DAY AND TIME THAT WE YOUNG AMERICANS DO NOT CARE ABOUT WHAT COLOR OR RACE YOU ARE. AS LONG AS WHEN YOU WAKE UP IN THE MORNING YOU GO TO WORK OR GO TO SCHOOL AND DO THE VERY BEST JOB YOU KNOW HOW. WE HAVE TO GIVE HIS MOTHER HER CREDIT. BARACK WAS NOT RAISED BY HIS FATHER WHO WAS AFRICAN, HE WAS RAISED BY HIS MOTHER AND HER PARENTS WHO WERE ALL OF CAUCASIAN DECENT. THOSE WHO DON’T LIKE THE IDEA OF MIXING RACES NEED TO LOOK AT EACH AND EVERY RACE OUT HERE… NONE OF US ARE ANY “ONE” RACE, WE ARE ALL MIXED WHETHER YOU ARE ITALIAN AND GERMAN, SWEDEN AND PORTUGUESE OR IF YOUR WEST INDIAN AND AFRICAN. NO MATTER WHAT RACE YOU ARE, REMEMBER THAT WE ARE ALL HUMAN FIRST, AND THIS COUNTRY BELONGS TO ALL OF US. BARACK HAS WHAT IT TAKES AND WE AS YOUNG AMERICANS WHAT TO SEE JUST WHAT HE’S MADE OF

Posted by: January Hall | October 15, 2008, 2:22 pm 2:22 pm

And ABC we challenge you to put it out there and remind viewers that we are not electing a “Black Man,” for president. If we are going to make any accusations regarding race, then we need to bring the issue up right and make it about “Mixed Races.” Many Black people look at him and see “A Black Man,” so of course the rest of the nation is going to see the same thing. And then there are some who see him for who he is… “Mixed.” Black people are proud he is a part of the culture, however White Americans should be just as proud. Barack is an intelligent, well cultured, and intriguing man. I think he brings out the best qualities in both races.

Some of these comments are so convoluted; it reminds me of some of the patients.
‘homeland security snooping’ – be afraid?’
‘racists are like sex offenders – should have a list, too’?
So, are thoughts now going to be monitored SOMEHOW? If I look at someone
‘funny’ (according to your definition),
am I then put on a list? Remember, that sword cuts both ways.
Most of the thinking on this site is
what psychiatrists call – well they just call it “off”. (it’s actually signs and symptoms of a paranoid schizophrenic and/or bipolar with phychotic features, among other names.
Is your hatred so deep that you are making yourself sick over this?
Don’t.
It will all come out in the wash.
That’s just a very old saying, but true.
This, too, shall pass.
Whatever the outcome is, America will shake it off and move on.

Very boring stuff.
So, you admit, you do want the terrorists to be watched. Glad to hear it. (that’s what the Republicans want ,too.)
As for racists, who gets to decide that?
Again, that sword cuts both ways.
A person cannot be arrested for how he or she feels. Only actions that result in harm can be prosecuted.
Who gets to decide who is or who is not a racist? You? Obama? McCain? WOW!

I don’t care if a presidential candidate’s skin is orange with green stripes and yellow polka-dots. If he is has political relationships with terrorists like Ayers, has a socialist economical philosophy,is liberal in his morals, and can’t win an election without stealing it, as is Obama, I am not going to vote for him.

1984….well i define a racist like the gov. defines porn…i know it when i see it/smell it… but if you want racism defined as per the law, then just read the state statute where you live that defines racism as it applies to the state where you live(alaska?)
also ,you can look up the federal statutes if you like as well. they define illegal racism very nicely and any citizen can be put in jail for racist acts ,but NEVER DID I SAY RACIST THOUGHTS.as long as racists arent violent or illegal activity , or do not promote violence or illegal activity, they can indeed be part of the american system ,albeit a very tiny dysfunctional annoying unseemly sector of it.
and what about terrorists ? do we let them make plans and construe destruction ,waiting until they actually do something before we act….NO
its called “pro active” intervention, and we can and should do some thing similar with known violent racists and anyone else who breaks laws if need be under the homeland security laws the republican have left us liberals.
as long as the racists keep their ugly thoughts to themselves there isnt a problem but then they begin to make public threats of violence and violent acts and incite others to do the same , those people are threats to the national security of this nation ,and that kind of behavior cannot be tolerated or condoned.
for example ,the kkk. the kkk can exist ,racist as they are because they know they are being watched night and day ,and they really CANT do anything illegal or they will be busted immediately. the fbi and others keep a constant watch on the known trouble makers, and thats what they are paid taxpayer $$ to do.
kkk= neutered by the anti racism laws which let them have and voice their moronic opinion(s), but only as far as the law will allow ,which is ,i think proper government policy per the requirements of the constitution.
and additionally, youre the nutjob insinuating that i am condoning random nazi republican style check points and illegal searches . anyway ,thats nothing different than what is done now every day under the heading of ” homeland security” .
racists (and terrorists, and sex offenders )make my homeland less secure for me, therefor i want laws to ensure they are no threat ,and if that means a list of certain people must be compiled and updated to keep the majority safe, well that sounds like a plan to me.
1984 .. i see who is “afraid” of “big brother” now….

To read what some of these fools like Ricky Thompson, Ginn Reynolds and the mind numbing idiocy of James Halsey have to say is incredible. Did they just drop in from 1955?
It is frightening that people will base their decisions on who will run this country based on a line or two from the bible. No wonder these people swoon over Palin. Her views are as backward and Medieval as theirs.
It seems to me that the more ignorant one is the more they are apt to embrace the bible as absolute truth. It’s scary and has no place in public office.

Obama is 50% Black and 50% White. I see you asking whites if they’ll not vote for Obama because he’s black but I don’t see you asking blacks if they’ll not vote for him because he’s 50% white.

Please get over it!!!. Race will continue to be an issue in the South until a time when those that witnessed racism first hand grow old and leave the World.

There is no chance Obama will be elected President
The Truth is Screaming Out that “Obama will not be elected President” and nobody will talk about the real reason why.
The Big Elephant in the room is race. Obama needs a significant number of white voters to vote for him in order to win. So far, the vast majority of likely white voters when ask say they have no problem voting for a black candidate. As you can see, in the polls Obama and McCain have been tied or even McCain sometimes ahead, despite McCain advocating essentially to continue all of the policies for the last 8 years of the Bush administration. These policy that have devastated this country, with devastation in almost all areas, Jobs, Quality and Affordable Education, Health Insurance, Housing, Banking, Energy Cost, Environment, Food Safety, Trade, the Military and Veterans, and llittle respect for us from the Nations around the World. It should be noted that the Very Rich and Corporations have prospered tremendously.
For most Whites and all Americans it is clear that this country is in bad shape and getting worse for everyone except the Very Rich and the Greedy Corporations. This Election should be such a slam dump for the democrats that they need only say that they’re not going to do what the Republican would do. — Landslide for the Democrats!
I ask myself why would any American not vote for someone who would just promise to do something different from what Bush and the Republicans have done for the last 8 years, not withstanding someone that would also promise to commit the government to help the Middle Class, create and retain good paying Jobs in U.S., lower Energy Costs and help American keep their homes. That answer is Race.
Whites are looking for any excuse not to vote for Obama and not be called a racist. Evidenced all of the irrelevant accusations, such as that he is not patriotic (won’t wear a Flag lapel pin), is a Muslim, an Elitist, his wife hates America. All of these things which are so obviously ridiculous and need no reply, yet you have the Media and whites saying that he needs to address these issues farther because the American Public just don’t know enough about him. What a Sham! Yes, many Whites whether consciously or unconsciously will be voting on a racists bias that they won’t admit to publicly and they will justify not voting for Obama because of these ridiculous accusations.
The Truth is that large number of whites while saying they have no objections to a black person being president will go in to the privacy of the voting booth fearing the reality that if they vote for the person that will benefit them and this country the most would make a black man president and they will not vote for Obama.
You could be running a “Jack in The Box” against McCain and The “Jack in The Box” would be well ahead in the polls and would win big time, but Obama won’t win because he is black.
