Soccer moms, security moms, Sarah moms. What do women really vote on?
There’s a big debate about what issues women vote on and whether certain issues trigger our political preferences. Do we vote on classic women’s issues, abortion and maternity leave for example or do we cast our vote on the same disparate range of issues that influence men’s votes?
Well, let’s take a spin through the last few elections. In 2000 we were categorized as soccer moms (a pet hate, by the way.) The thinking was that suburban moms voted as a block – we were socially moderate, interested in health and education issues and knew how to get grass stains out of soccer socks. But by 2004 we had become security moms. We still lived in the burbs, even the new exurbs, but now we’d apparently given up education for national security. Post 9-11 we were becoming more conservative and we wanted a man who’d keep us safe – not that wimpy, too tall, suspiciously foreign John Kerry. In September 2008 we became Sarah moms. She may not look so stellar today but don’t forget that 20 point swing among white women to McCain/Palin straight after the GOP convention. Palin was every mom and women, especially but not exclusively conservative women, loved her for it – a mom in the White House, how cool was that?
But those heady days seems light years away. I think there’s a new type of female voter – call her stockmarket mom. We’re the ones who look at the market and feel fear. We still care about health, education and abortion but we really care about our disappearing 401ks and kids’ college funds. At in this we are neither Democratic nor Republican we are women and moms, above all.
In a great new book, WHAT WOMEN REALLY WANT, democratic pollster Celinda Lake and Republican pollster Kellyanne Conway show this purpling of the female vote. They suggest women are getting what they want at home and work and voting on the issues that affect them by rising above left/right demagoguery.
Soccer moms, security moms, Sarah moms, stockmarket moms and most of all, sane moms.

I can say that I for one am voting for the peson I believe in. If Obama hadn’t been the democratic nominee I’m not sure that voting day would have mattered so much. I am retiring at the end of October. I am concerned about finances. If obama is elected I will feel much safer. If McCain wins I will be scared every day for the rest of my life. I fear loss of money and more unaffordable wars. I pray every day that my country has the character to vote for Obama.

Well Joy Behar is a woman that wouldn’t pee on Sarah Palin even if she was on fire.
Behar hates Sarah with such a passion. Why is that? She is a mother too. What is Behar so scared of?

Joy is just jealous of her. Joy is just a big mouth B. Sarah has it all and Joy just wish she had it. Anyway the view is just so trashy now. Elizabeth is the only on there that is truthful and they just can’t stand her either. The rest of the are trash trash trashl

Sane moms?
That’s an evocative spin. Posit for discussion the *Moms* were protecting something. Soccer moms were protecting the lifestyle, security moms were protecting the family, stockmarket moms are protecting the purse and Sarah moms are protecting their right to power.
Are sane moms protecting their sanity in the face of uncertainty about all of the other things they are protecting?

We want a chance. It’s especially sad, when women run organizations and do not reach out to help others. For example, I thought you would be interested in the following situation:
1> CA’s (Islandia) Technology Services (TS) department is lead by a woman, whom they transferred from Ireland to run the Services organization.
2> Outside of Islandia, the department rarely hires women to interview and hire women for their high profile positions. ie. consultant, sr. consultant, consulting manager, practice director, regional manager, and area manager positions.
3> Yes, they have women in management positions in the Technology Services Education department. Which is honestly considered the lowest level in prestige at the company.
4> If I am recalling correctly, of the few existing women in technical consulting roles, they have only been promoted to a presales or services Sr. Consultant or project manager.
5> There is not one women their that has been able to work her way up.
6> The few, if any that are in Consulting Director, Delivery Manager, Practice Manager positions, were hired from the outside.
I wonder why an organization can be run by a lady, yet overlook the hiring practices of interviewing more women, hiring more women & promoting women from within?
Their resume bank is full of applications from women, yet there are so few getting interviews, let alone an actual job.
In addition, to there are very few asians, hispanics, indians and blacks in the group as well. The demographics of the team does not reflect the talent pool of candidates with experience in the field.
1> Why is there no active program to recruit and mentor women from within?
I agree, they can hire talented executives from the outside & from a foreign country. Why can’t they seem to develop the women they have for future leadership positions. Internal candidates do not seem to be considered.
2> Why is there no active program to recruit minorities?
3> How can this team be run by a women, yet lack insensitivity to the lack of recruiting and promoting women from within?
It would prove an interesting question to ask? I am interested in knowing the answer.

I can’t relate to Sarah. I taught my kids to have pride in themselves, and my daughters to KEEP YOUR PANTIES up! Sarah reminds me of too many Moms that put careers ahead of their kid. If you don’t want kids, don’t have them, if you do, RAISE THEM YOURSELF.

Sarah Palin does not represent the women of America! She is not educated, she has used racial slurs, she has corrupted her office as mayor,a dn she is against the right of a women to choose.
She is a FAKE!! I don’t know any intelligant women who is willing to vote for her.
She does not represent women who have fought for the right to vote, use family planning and educate their children in schools free of religious persecustion.

Trish…SO TRUE…..!!!! Sarah herself was pregnant when she got married.
And you are right, I feel so sorry for that little boy they are dragging around to all those rallies and debates. They are using him for sympathy.
I work with special needs kids and he deserves better than that!!!

ck…you are right. McCain plains to cut millions in Medicaid, first thing. I guess a lot of people in Florida don’t understand that. He admitted it in the last debate.
What happens to all those people, including you, who are depending on that for medical coverage when they retire.

Sandy…if I was Palin, I would have said,”NO THANKS,” I have a pregnant daughter and a Downs’ Syndrome son and they need me.
But Sarah is on a high with power.

I vote for someone that is smarter than me. I do not want someone that took 6 years and 5 colleges to finish a “journalism” degree. I do not want a first family with a pregnant teenager who is also a highschool drop-out (and Republicans brag of “moral values”).
I do not want someone that only identifies with “Hockey moms” and “joe six-packs” (as I am neither one), and I don’t want someone that will tell me or my daughter that if we get raped, we will have no choice but keep the child.
Sarah Palin is an embarrassment to me as a women and would be even worst as our President.

Trista….Joy can see through her ,like many of us.
She is a FAKE. There is no substance there. That is why she HAS to go negative.
I bet you thought the Gibson and Couric interviews were unfair….

Janet…RIGHT ON. I couldn’t of said it better nyself.
Plus, they are making this boy( the father of the child) quit school and get a job to support the child. HOW STUPID!!!
I thought Palin believed education was the most important asset.

Personally, this article is insulting to me as a woman. Are all voting women young wives & mothers? NO. To quote, “Soccer moms, security moms, Sarah moms, stockmarket moms and most of all, sane moms.” How about older, wiser Moms AND GrandMoms, who most likely will outnumber the “Soccer Moms” 2 to 1 when Nov. 4th rolls around. We know what trouble this country is in.
Sarah Palin scares the hell out of me. Incorrect education, no experience, and with McCain looking like he could drop dead at any minute, can any sane person HONESTLY think that Sarah Palin could lead a country? Nauseating …
Posted by: keepitreal | October 15, 2008, 3:39 pm 3:39 pm
This is a simple one for me – I could be best described as a one-issue voter: abortion rights for women. As long as women’s bodies are controlled by “The State” we cannot be considered equal citizens. A candidate could be the smartest, most eloquent, experienced, blah, blah, blah, person, but if he/she doesn’t advocate for a woman’s right to choose, they don’t get my vote.

I am an individual. I do not vote with my ovaries. I vote with my brain and my heart…in that order. The idea that we vote as a gender unit is insulting and almost embarrassing (for the person asserting this idea). Maybe I am a parent. Maybe I am a businessperson. Maybe I am neither. My great big wonderful creative logical brain and I make this decision based on what is good for the community at large, for future generations, for myself, my family, my environment, and the world at large…many people of which look to this country as a template for progressive thought. How about a country that puts more development into diplomacy as a defensive weapon than armaments? How about voting for a government that might find a little time to inspire each of us to find our better nature. How about a government with a brain and a heart.
That’s what I want. I happen to be a woman.
Posted by: cail | October 15, 2008, 3:53 pm 3:53 pm
Cail … I agree 100%, but as a woman, and being inherently different biologically from a man, I will also weigh my vote with my “ovaries”. Having the right to choose what is best for myself, includes voting as a woman.

There is another class of women not discussed in this article, but the unmarried, non-moms will be voting in a few weeks as well. I am mid-40′s, single only because it’s not legal in my state for me to marry someone of the same sex, and that’s one of the big issues for me. I have healthcare because the company my partner works for has domestic partner benefits. I want the playing field leveled for all Americans, and the Repugs have proven time and again that they are the party of divisions. They separate us into those who are “right” and “wrong” in our life “choices”. Although I have no children of my own, it does concern me that we are dropping in the ranks of the best educated children in the world. If we don’t correct our educational system to competitive on an international scale we will find ourselves in our golden years being cared for by morons.
As for Palin, I clocked her the moment I laid eyes on her…the only reason she ever got any favorable attention is because she is somewhat attractive. I would like to see how it would play if McCain picked someone more of Margaret Thatcher’s appearance with Palin’s brains.
Posted by: Debra | October 15, 2008, 4:06 pm 4:06 pm
We want an intelligent woman representing us and needless to say that is not Palin.
“She said the report (on Troopergate) was “very clear” that she hadn’t done anything “unethical” and there was “no abuse of power” at all. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a politician lie so brazenly.”
So, Republicans, which is it? Is Sarah Palin shockingly dishonest or is she functionally illiterate? Inquiring minds want to know.”

When ever I read articles or headlines like this, I don’t know whether to laugh or scream. The implication being that somehow all women will vote the same, or all women who are “soccer moms” (I’m not fond of that term either) will all vote alike and all professional women will all vote alike and all poor women will all vote alike. Give me a break. You could probably interview 20 women in any of these categories people try to force them into and get 20 different answers as to what is most important.
Hard as it might be for the media and the politicians to grasp, women are individuals who can have different priorities, values, beliefs, etc. The majority are not going to vote for a candidate just because a candidate is a woman, or just because the candidate is a man. Women look at the issues that are important to them, for some it may be health care (are they caring for a sick child or aging parents) or education (do they have children to put through school or are they going to school?)
The environment (are they concerned about global warming, species extinction, harmful chemicals in food, etc). And so on and so on and so on.
Many of these issues cross economical status, age, and other differences “soccer mom” “profesional”, “blue collar”, “senior citizen.”
“What women really want” is the same as “What people really want” it depends on the individual person.

Pamp205 .. I think Palin is the Grand Manipulator. I have been blessed with healthy, bright, happy children, and I am grateful beyond words, but something screams at me that it’s totally out of place when I see her with her family and the littlest one with down syndrome. She looks forced, and I hate the feeling that she is using those children for sympathy.

I know what I want. I want a President who wants to look forward, not behind. I want a country that is strong domestically and in foreign affairs, but also the country that promotes peace and diplomacy. I want a college structure that will allow to go to school one day without breaking the bank. I want equal pay for equal work for women, something we shouldn’t even have to ask for in 2008. I want birth control to be added to health insurance so then maybe abortion wouldn’t be so much of the issue (john mccain voted against birth control to be covered by health insurance but VOTED FOR VIAGRA TO BE COVERED BY HEALTH INSURANCE!) I want more green technology that just doesn’t mean drilling for oil but other alternative fuels. There are so many things Americans need to do to get better and I want a President who will lead us there, steady and calm. I don’t see Sarah as calm plus with the investigation coming back with abuse of power founded, I feel Sarah is ME FIRST, not COUNTRY FIRST.

“Palin is a woman who can’t even tell the truth about the most quotidian and public details of her own life, never mind about matters of major public import. In her only vice-presidential debate, she was shallow, mendacious and phoney. What kind of maverick, after all, keeps harping on what a maverick she is? That her performance was considered anything but a farce doesn’t show how high Palin has risen, but how low we all have sunk”.

I just cannot bring myself to understand her logic as to why she thinks she qualifies to be VP.
It is mindboggling. I know professors on college with more experience( and they have run their own businesses), who would never consider themselves qualified.
I don’t know. It is a real puzzle.

Sarah Palin is an embarrassment to all women…. I will never vote for a person who does not believe in a womans right to chose. I will never vote for a person who believes that killing moose, wolves is socially acceptable. I will never vote for a person who speaks with a condesensing tone to America. Sarah is way to big for her britches and just wants the attention. The lady needs to RAISE her family!!! I wonder how much time she has spent with her children in the last 6 weeks??? Not much!! She gives a double message to America.. Country First, how about FAMILY first Sarah. !!! Ive already voted by mail and Obama got my vote, hands down!! Yes, women tend to vote more emotionally then men, but that dosen’t mean irrationally. I don’t tend to vote on just one issue, but for me this year, it’s the economy. Nothing has ever affected me more than the last 4 years. I’ve survived lay-offs and unemployment during the 80′s and moved into the 90′s and everything turned around. We became part of the working middle class. Bought our first home, new car, built up our savings and started looking forward to retirement. After 27 years of marriage, I’m back to clipping coupons, living pay day to pay day and worrying about our retirement savings and losing our healthcare, not to mention watching our neighbors struggle with job loss and cancer after losing her health insurance. I feel like I’m in the twighlight zone. It’s horrible. I wouldn’t vote another republican into the white house for all the tea in China. They have done nothing, repeatedly, for me or anyone I know.

How can we celebrate being feminists when we’ve been cheated out of our female heroines and history?
At age 40, I realized that I knew that it did, but nothing of HOW the world turned — from routine repression to flat-out freedom for women.
I was a pre-teen in the 60s and was vaguely aware of bra-burning and women’s ‘liberation.’ But nothing was taught in school – there were no tv shows – no popular books that would make a person of my generation understand what it took to instill in me the firm belief that there was nothing in the world that I as a woman could not do.
I believe that my generation of women was the first to come of age with most of us believing, taking it for granted, assuming that the world would be fair to us and that our future would be glorious.
Of course, that wasn’t the case, though my life has been blessed with amazing opportunities that my mother and grandmother would not have dreamed of.
But when I realized that I didn’t know how my freedom happened I set out on a journey of discovery and I am now strengthened by the inspiration of countless suffragettes. I realize I stand on their strong shoulders, and on the shoulders of women like Gloria Steinem who pushed and are pushing for more than voting rights, who demand the full range of human rights for women.
I want to share that inspiration with other women.
Can you even imagine being a woman and NOT being able to vote?
Thanks to the suffragettes, America has women voters and wide range of women candidates, and we are a better country for it!
Women have voices and choices! Just like men.
But few people know ALL of the suffering that our suffragettes had to go through, and what life was REALLY like for women.

Trista, you seem to assume that a woman should always vote for another woman, particularly if they are both mothers.
This is absurd. No one expresses such ridiculous views when male politicians are concerned. Being a parent is not a job qualification.
I and countless other women despise Sarah Palin because she was unqualified for the job and taken on the GOP ticket primarily because of her sex. She holds political views we disagree with. She is ignorant and unintelligent. She gleefully took part in the worst anti-Obama smears of the GOP campaign.
I am delighted to support female politicians when they are qualified, intelligent, knowledgeable and have political views I agree with.
