The Note: McCain Makes Late Turn to Economy
ABC News’ Rick Klein reports in Tuesday’s Note:
One week out, we know that one of the following equations will produce a number greater than 270 (and only one could possibly approach 370):
Change + Bush + Virginia + Montana + Ground Game + (Air War x 4) + Axelrod – Schmidt – Neiman Marcus – Backbiting – Surprise +/- Biden + Tina Fey
Experience + Liberals + (Bradley x 2) + (Surprise x 3) + Joe the Plumber + Pennsylvania + Schmidt – Axelrod – Bush +/- Palin +/- Bill Clinton
We know every smart mathematician ends up with the same result these days. But we also know every smart conversation ends with the same two words . . . and yet.
And yet . . . it’s just distinctly possible that this election that’s been all about little things may wind up being about the big things (probably not including seven-year-old radio interviews). Things like national security and public corruption and the direction of the nation and, above all, the economy.
Read the rest of The Note — and get all the latest on the 2008 election, Congress, the White House and the wide world of politics every day — from Rick Klein by bookmarking this link.
It’s a formula that even Sen. John McCain appears comfortable with now: Joe the Plumber himself (finally) hits the trail for him Tuesday, ABC’s Bret Hovell reports, and it’s all about the economy for him, too.
McCain’s latest ad is economic in message, alternating pictures of the candidates (and it’s not hard to figure out which words belong with which man — and which man looks better in the chosen photographs): “For higher taxes . . . For workin’ Joes . . . Spread your income . . . Keep what’s yours . . . A trillion in new spending . . . Freeze spending, eliminate waste . . . Pain for small business . . . Economic growth . . . Risky . . . Proven.”
But who’s really happier with this turn? “Both candidates are focusing their rhetoric increasingly on economic issues — a main area of concern for voters in the continuing global financial crisis,” Christopher Cooper and Elizabeth Holmes write in The Wall Street Journal.
Said former Lt. Gov. Michael Steele, R-Md.: “In the cloud of this economic turmoil a lot of things often times get lost in translation. . . . It is important for campaigns to step back and reassess and remind.”
One basic problem with a debate like this, this late: “Senator Barack Obama, making what aides called the ‘closing argument’ of his campaign, declared on Monday that it was time to ‘get beyond the old ideological debates.’ And then Mr. Obama and his opponent, Senator John McCain, spent much of the day engaged in just such a debate,” Peter Baker and Michael Cooper write in The New York Times.
Contrast the closing styles: Obama is going broad, with soaring speeches before big crowds — and McCain is making it all about the attack: liberal vs. conservative, safe vs. risky, the plumber vs. the redistributor.

Lets see.. the American Small Business League endorses Obama.
The AFL-CIO endorses Obama
The AARP endorses Obama
Former fed chairman Volker advises and supports Obama and his tax plan
Former fed chairman Greenspan has said he does not support McCains tax cuts.
Top generals and former NATO commanders support Obama.
A huge majority of major newspapers support Obama (when last election cycle, they supported bush only by a very small margin of about 1%)
And the majority of the world supports Obama.
So, we have small business, workers, economic experts, the elderly, the Military, newspapers and the world supporting Obama..
What’s left for McCain? The die hard intolerant vote and the evangelicals (and even they are shifting towards Obama). Oh, and those ignorant enough to fall for the GOP sound bite rumor mill, and of course, Al-Qaeda who backs McCain.

The latest directive from Our Dear Leader’s National Field Director, Jon Carson, instructs Cultists to take Election Day off and skip out of work and classes for The One.
The pursuit of “Higher Purpose” requires Obama followers to skip out of their jobs and play hooky from school — while others pick up the slack. Don’t sweat it, your Republican co-workers can cover for you while you work your holy mission.

Did you know McCain plans on reducing the corporate income tax rate from 35% to 25%? This translates into a 28% reduction in corporate income taxes. What is he offering you? This is wealth distribution all right. Steal from the poor and give to the rich!

Hang in there, my fellow Democrats. We’re so used to losing that it’s hard to believe we might actually win. A week is a long time in politics, but realistically there are only two outcomes: Obama on a squeaker or Obama by a landslide. Either way, wither McCain and wither Palin.

From McCain’s book Worth the Fighting For:
“I didn’t decide to run for president to start a national crusade for the political reforms I believed in or to run a campaign as if it were some grand act of patriotism. In truth, I wanted to become president because it had become my ambition to be president. I was 62 years old when I made the decision, and I thought it was my one shot at the prize…
“In truth, I’d had the ambition for a long time… it had been there, in the back of my mind, for years, as if it were simply a symptom of my natural restlessness.”

Obama says his tax scheme will only raise taxes on those who make 250k.
Then why did Obama, Biden, and the rest of the congressional Dems pass a budget resolution last spring which called for tax increases for those making $42,000 per year and up? 42k is not a very high income!
Democrats’ definition of RICH is highly nuanced and subject to change without notice.

———————–
Barack Obama voted on a resolution to end the Bush tax cuts. That’s it.
The resolution would NOT have raised taxes on its own without additional legislation. And in the new legislation Obama does not propose a tax increse for a 42k income level.
According to FactCheck.org, Obama’s economic plan would produce a tax cut for the majority of American households, with middle-income earners benefiting most.

Angie,
I have to agree with 4mr Democrat on this one.
The 1st amendment should apply to everyone, even the hate filled lardasses who lead their moromic lemmings by fabricating stories and manipulating the truth should be allowed to speak.
Most of America realizes how they’ve been manipulated for the last 8 years. These same “journalists” lavished praises for Bush, the GOP, and their policies. We see where that got us.
They can’t hide from the socio-economic reality of Republican “leadership”. All they have left are accusations, inuendo, and fear. But that’s they’ve ver had really. It’s just not working this time.

Hey Republican’s, look at the history of your beloved non-compassionate greedy party. Look at how much your taxes have increased per month since 2001. My income has been stagnant over the past 8 years. I now pay $595.00 per month in increased taxes. That’s $7140.00 a year more in taxes while earning $50,000.00 a year. That is a 7% tax increase for me since the Bush-McCain-Palin tax cuts and supply-side socialist economic strategies have been implemented since 2001. The Republican’s are crying over increasing the richest people in America taxes by 3% oh boo hoo for the rich. Seventy per cent of the small businesses in the city I live in have gone out of business since 2001. When I drive thru town most of business buildings and malls are empty.
Here is a challenge for all Republican’s. Please show the Independent’s and Democrat’s with real facts how great the Reagan-Bush Sr.-Bush Jr.-McCain-Palin tax cuts and supply-side socialist economic strategies have helped small businesses, keep living wage jobs in this country, create jobs that pay living wages for the middle class, to provide opportunities for creating new small businesses, jobs for the working poor to become apart of the middle class and reduce the number of working poor in this country, improve the infrastructure of this country, lower the cost of health care, make college affordable for all who choose to go to college, improve k-12 education, improve Social Security and Medicare benefits, make us more respected over seas, balance the federal budget, reduce or eliminate the deficit, reduce or eliminate the long-term national dept of this country, build a strong enduring economy, make housing affordable for most Americans, clean up the lying mudsling of the Republican Rovian politics of this election, united the citizens of this country for our common purpose of making life better for all of us and future generations.
Please show the Independent’s and Democrat’s what the Republican’s have done to make these things a real reality for the American people and please don’t give us any lame excuses for the Republican’s failing to do these things mentioned above. We just want hard facts of what has been done to accomplish these things.
If you look at our history when we had the largest number of middle class people, the largest number of small businesses, the lowest number of working poor and most people earned a living wage and could buy a home, save for retirement, save for their children’s education and afford healthcare. The USA was at its strongest and most respected around the world. It is common sense for our government and all of us to work together to restore what made the USA great.
Republicans if you can’t show what your party has done to accomplish these things. I recommend that all Americans vote for Obama-Biden 08.

Did anyone see McCain on “Meet the Press”?
When asked how he could call Obama a “socialist” when he supported a $700 BILLION dollar government bailout of the banks, he said “Well, that’s because there’s an emergency”.
So, according to McCain, socialistic policy is ok to solve our economic crisis.
Does anyone else see some flaws in his latest attacks?
He also supported the same graduated tax structure suggested by Obama when he ran in 2000.

Any way you slice it, both are socialists. Neither candidate will keep his “promises”. All either will do is increase spending for the government and we the people will see very little of any of their “promises” there are differences on how each will allocate the moneys that they aquire. but the bottom line is that both WILL increase the size of the government. When you leave it up to the government to decide what its citizens need, you have socialism. give the power back to the people, I cant support either one based on this ideal they both have

reddog,
The reason jobs are going to other countries is because of labor costs, not taxes. First the jobs went to Mexico, until the old economic rule of supply and demand started to increase labor rates. So, then they moved work to India, again, the economic rule raised it’s head. So, now, China is the place to go. I am sure there is another country that is trying to set themselves up to take work away from China.
The tax rate may be higher for businesses here, but the rate they actually pay is lower. Companies have a lot of deductions they can make in the US that lowers the rate they actually pay.
And Tina, birth certificate? Really? Have you not gotten the GOP memo that they have moved on to other fake issues?

Neither candidate is realistic about what they can achieve. They are both HUGE deficit spenders.
However, McCain wants to keep the tax cut for the wealthy in place, thus reducing revenues. His plan will put the US even farther into debt than Obama’s.
Reality: BOTH would have to make drastic spending cuts or raise taxes to actually pay for all their programs.

I agree both canidates are unrealistc but in my view if you lower taxes you actually raise revenue which is what Mccain is counting on. Obama can only raise more people taxes to achieve what he wants to do and he states it would only be on Individuals/corporations making 200,000 per year it does not add up McCain promise to balance the budget by 2013 Not Obama no promise .Obamas plans may generate a short term fix but not long term.

Obama does not want to upset his DailyKos/MoveOn.org base.
Obama says that the United States should strike at al-Qaeda in Pakistan without the consent of the Pakistani government. So, he favors attacking al Qaeda in Pakistan, but presumably NOT in Syria, even though al Qaeda thrives in Syria not because of lawlessness (as in Pakistan) but because the group enjoys the hospitality of the Syrian government. Maybe if the Pakistani government began openly collaborating with al Qaeda, Obama would withdraw his support for military strikes.
If Obama was consistent, he would applaud the Syrian operation. His SILENCE on the matter indicates otherwise. You’d think there were a few curious journalists out there who might wish to get him ON THE RECORD about all of this.

the constitution is null and void. it has been for some time. The most of us are arguing for one side or the other on which will bring socialism the fastest. we are socialsist now and seem to be content with allowing the government to aqcuire even more power. The only outcome will be that we all will be broke and the government will have all the power to dictate everything in our lives. History has proven this time and time again. Wake up America!!!!

I wish a candidate had the balls to say he would reduce our miltary spending by 10%. That solves the budget deficit.
Unfortunately, neither will because the other side will jump on it as “leaving our nation unprotected”.
What a bunch of rhetorical BS! There is a tremensous amount of waste in our military. Certainly a minimum of 10%. Military contractors are raping the American taxpayer every day. And the current administration has looked the other way.
Military spending is over 50% of the national budget. By making the military work more with the efficiency of a business, we could eliminate the deficit AND start to pay off the debt.
Two time Republican President Gen Eisenhower said, “It is simply impossible for our nation to be 100% safe. To try and make it so would cost more financially than we can afford and more socially than we, as free Americans, would want to give”
Why can’t our leaders today have that sense of honesty?

Barack Obama never stated that redistribution should be from tax payers to those who do not pay taxes, that is a lie, deception and a fallacy. What he is talking about is “fairness” and opportunity for all. That there should be wealth for all, not just the special few, that is what spreading the wealth or redistribution of wealth really means. The GOP is famous for taking words out of context and making them the complete opposite. Please be wary of the touch-screen voting machines. If your district uses one, be sure to confirm that the candidate you chose on the screen is the one that is checked off on the screen and not the other candidate. In one Republican voting place in Florida the woman who ran the place said they STRESS absentee ballots for their contsituents and she had stacks of them on a corner table which had already been filled out and sent back. I got to thinking about that. Why would she Stress these ballots instead of people voting on the machines? We can be assured that if we elect a Democratic President and a Democratic Congress, these problems effecting our voting system and rights will be addressed and solved.

Please DON’T tell me that a few empty promises that a little kick back to your pockets will buy off your patriotism! Your kick back will turn around and kick you harder .. do your research!! Even IF only people making over $250k were to be taxed and thats not where its stopping but lets just say. You will not have JOBS!!
People will not begin businesses because JOBS for YOU will mean the cost of higher overheads and employee insurance. Under Obama, who will feel the brunt of this overhead and insurance storm? The Employ’ERS that offer YOU JOBS!! If they can’t afford to be in business .. then there won’t be JOBS for YOU! Where is your money going to come from then? Socialized Welfare!!! You will have no say, you will have no freedom because you will be OWNED by the government under Obama! This is what “Socialism” and “Marxism” means to us ALL!! IF Obama wins this election, JOBS will begin packing up to move to Ireland and other low tax countries!! When this happens, what do you think the stock market will do?? Where will YOUR JOBS go?? At this time, these radical countries will begin rejoicing because America will be in financial ruin and on her knees!! This sets the stage for so many other events against America and that is what they will be celebrating!!
Please tell me that you are not selling my grandchildrens future for a few bucks!! $$ that you will loose and then some, over the long run of Obama’s presidency!
Please tell me that you are not willing to trust this whole countries fate in the hands of someone that has not only NOT been American all his life but is supported by radical countries who wish us HARM!!!!
PLEASE!! I beg you all!!! This is NOT THE TIME to make a statement that we are tired of how our country has been ran!!! This is NOT THE TIME with THIS candidate who has too many radical supporters from other countries!!! I could state more but you have all heard it time and time again! YOU already KNOW!!
Just one last thing because sometimes the answers are in our face so much that we have an oversight. Please THINK to yourselves!! IF Obama is only going to tax $250k and over ONLY .. take from the rich to give to us. What is in it for Holllywood and Warren Buffet just to name a couple??? Wouldn’t you think if it was going to actually be this way that Hollywood would be wanting to hang onto their millions $$$$?????? Do you really believe they want to just make sure WE have plenty? Obama’s definition of “rich” for tax punishment purposes is subject to change without notice. It depends on just how much revenue He and the Dem Congress need for their Grand Socialist Revolution.
Byron York
“Senator Obama has made a lot of promises. First he said people making less than 250,000 dollars would benefit from his plan, then this weekend he announced in an ad that if you’re a family making less than 200,000 dollars you’ll benefit — but yesterday, right here in Pennsylvania, Senator Biden said tax relief should only go to “middle class people — people making under 150,000 dollars a year.” It’s interesting how their definition of rich has a way of creeping down. At this rate, it won’t be long before Senator Obama is right back to HIS VOTE that Americans making just 42,000 dollars a year should get a tax increase. We can’t let that happen.”

Bottom line: if your small business is netting (not gross, net) under a quarter million a year, you’re exempt from the insurance provisions and you’ll get a tax break under Obama’s plan.
If you’re clearing over a quarter million a year (and are therefore in the top 1.5% of all wage-earners in this country), your tax burden may increase as much as three percent. If that’s the case… this is the world’s smallest violin, playing “My Heart Bleeds For You”.
Jobs will still be created, people will still put in the 80 hour weeks to keep up with the Joneses, and dogs will not start sleeping with cats (unless they were already, and really, that’s between you and your vet). Most of us will keep a bit more cash at tax time, but the millionaires may have to shuffle some priorities to buy that second private jet. Such is life.

You can search the Illinois State Senate to see what legislation Obama has worked on and/or passed into law:
http://www.ilga.gov/sitemap.asp
You can search the US Senate for legislation Obama has worked on and/or passed into law:
http://thomas.loc.gov/
You can see what his past voting record has been in this session of Congress:
http://projects.washingtonpost.com/congress/
While at the library of congress, you might also want to check out the targets of both McCains and Obamas legislation, and might be surprised at the stark difference between them and who they would benefit.
Although, I know you will not bother, based on many of your previous posts. Many have given you adequate relevant facts that you blatantly ignore, simply wasting their time. Your honesty in inquiry has been shown to be false and you have already more than clearly shown your lack of motivation for anything other than misinformation and conjecture.

Look what has happened to the budget deficit since Bush’s tax act of 2001.
What will happen if taxes are decreased further? What does this say about lowering taxes for the wealthy will spur the economy?

Videotape of Barack Obama You Won’t See on the News Is Making News
Tuesday, October 28, 2008
By Brit Hume
Tale of the Tape
The McCain camp has now joined those demanding The Los Angeles Times release a 2003 video that shows Barack Obama celebrating with a group of Palestinians hostile to Israel.
Peter Wallsten wrote in April about Obama’s association with former Palestinian operative Rashid Khalidi. The celebration was a farewell for Khalidi as he left Chicago for a job in New York. Wallsten called Khalidi a, “critic of Israel and advocate for Palestinian rights.”
He says, “A special tribute came from Khalidi’s friend and frequent dinner companion, the young State Senator Barack Obama… Obama reminisced about meals prepared by Khalidi’s wife… and conversations that had challenged his thinking.”
Wallsten writes that a young Palestinian read a poem accusing the Israeli government of terrorism. Another speaker likened Israeli settlers on the West Bank to Usama bin Laden.
Wallsten confirmed he has the tape, but told the political blog Gateway Pundit he does not plan on releasing it. The newspaper declines to comment.

Report: France’s Sarkozy blasts Obama over Iran
French President Nicolas Sarkozy fears that a Barak Obama victory in the upcoming US presidential election could irrevocably damage the West’s already-feeble stance against a nuclear Iran, Israeli government sources told Ha’aretz.
The sources said that reports reaching them from Paris are that Sarkozy is harshly critical of Obama’s positions vis-a-vis Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
In remarks made behind closed doors, the French leader is said to have referred to Obama’s stance on Iran as “utterly immature” and “empty of all content.”
Obama visited Paris in July and discussed the Iran issue at length with Sarkozy. Following those talks, Sarkozy was said to be concerned that if elected, Obama would spurn the positions of France, Russia, China, Germany and the UK and engage in direct, unconditional dialogue with Iran.

The Wall Street Journal
Obama’s Tax Plan Is Really a Welfare Plan
Barack Obama’s tax plan is the opposite of supply-side economics. He proposes to raise marginal rates for just about every federal tax. He also proposes a raft of tax credits that taxpayers can receive if they engage in various government-specified activities.
Moreover, the tax credits would mostly go to those who pay little or nothing in federal income taxes. His trick is to make the tax credits “refundable.” Thus, if the tax credit is for $1,000, but the taxpayer would otherwise only pay $200 in taxes, the government would write a check to the taxpayer for $800. If the taxpayer pays nothing in federal income taxes, the government would pay him the whole $1,000.
Such credits are not tax cuts. Indeed, they should be called The New Tax Welfare. In effect, Mr. Obama is proposing to create or expand a slew of government spending programs that are disguised as tax credits. The spending on these programs is then subtracted from the total tax burden, in order to make the claim that his tax plan is a net tax cut overall.
On the tax side of the ledger, the details released by his campaign last week confirm what a President Obama has in mind for our most productive citizens. The top individual income tax rate, for example, would be increased by 13%, to 39.6%; the next-highest rate would be raised to 36%. The top rates on capital gains and dividends would rise by a third, to 20%
The Social Security payroll tax would be raised between 16% to 32% for families making over $250,000 a year. This means that the real returns these people get from their lifetime payments into the retirement program will be driven below 0%, according to my own previous research, which was published by the Cato Institute and elsewhere.
Mr. Obama also wants a permanent federal estate tax, with a top rate of 45%; his health-insurance plan includes a new payroll tax on employers; and he also contemplates several increases in the corporate income tax, including a new so-called windfall profits tax on oil companies.
Then there is the spending side of the ledger. Mr. Obama proposes a fully refundable Making Work Pay Tax Credit, which would have the government pay out $500 to each worker and $1,000 to couples — reminiscent of George McGovern’s 1972 election proposal for the government to send a $1,000 check to everyone.
His American Opportunity Tax Credit would provide a $4,000, fully refundable tax credit for college tuition expenses. His Mortgage Interest Tax Credit would provide a 10% credit — refundable — to offset mortgage interest payments for lower- and middle-income families. His Health Care Tax Credits, which the campaign says “will ensure that health insurance is available and affordable for all families,” include “a new refundable 50 percent health tax credit on employee premiums paid by employers.”
Currently existing tax credits would also become spending programs in the Obama tax program. The Savers Credit would be made fully refundable, and would be expanded, according to the campaign, “to match 50% of the first $1,000 of savings for families that earn under $75,000.” The Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit would be made refundable and expanded to allow “low-income families to receive up to a 50 percent credit on the first $6,000 of child care expenses.”
The Earned Income Tax Credit is already refundable. Mr. Obama would expand it to “increase the number of working parents eligible for EITC benefits, increase the benefits available to noncustodial parents who fulfill their child support obligations, increase benefits for families with three or more children, and reduce the EITC marriage penalty, which hurts low-income families.” In short, welfare spending is to be increased by paying more money out to low-income income tax filers.
The latest Congressional Budget Office data shows the bottom 40% of income earners already pays no income taxes. Indeed, they receive a net payment from the federal income tax system — meaning from the taxpayers — equal to 3.8% of all federal income taxes, because of the refundable tax credits under current law. The middle 20% of income earners, the true middle class, pays 4.4% of federal income taxes.
Overall, the bottom 60% of income earners pay less than 1% of federal income taxes on net. When “tax credits” primarily go to this group in the form of checks from the government (rather than a reduction in their tax burden) it is simply an abuse of the language to call the spending a tax cut.
Consequently, to say, as the campaign does say, that the candidate’s tax plan is a tax cut on net — and that it would limit taxes to 18.2% of GDP — is grossly misleading. The Obama tax plan would sharply increase real taxes. It also would come nowhere near to paying for the massive increases in federal spending he has proposed, including the spending that is disguised in the form of refundable tax credits.

Obama admits he supports Marxism during an interview with Bill O’Reilly on Fox News…
*** The Obama [KGB] Squad has blocked the video but the text of the interview is still posted.
By Scott Miller
Karl Marx, author of The Communist Manifesto, penned the recap of his basic economic philosophy below:
“From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs”
Barack Obama, in an interview with Bill O’Reilly on Fox News, admits that he shares the above Marxist economic theory. Watch this (5:47 into the clip, but watch the whole clip):
“If am sittin’ pretty, and you’ve got a waitress who is making minimum wage plus tips, and I can afford it and she can’t, what’s the big deal for me to say I’m going to pay a little bit more… that is neighborliness”
No Senator, that is Marxism. What kind of dementia makes these liberal Marxists think they have the right to tell someone else, another free human being, how much money they should or should not have? It’s none of your damn business Barack… but the hell out!
And some of you thought I was exaggerating when I said this clown was a Marxist…

Obama’s political ideology is shaped by the “Carl Marx Doctrine” – do you even know what that is?
You are deeply confused my friend. McCain’s agenda is truly America first.
Obama’s agenda is truly his “Big Ego” first. (common characteristic among Marxist leaders).

Marxists/Socialists/Communists for Obama
America wake up! The American Marxists/Socialists/Communists have posted this proclamation right on Barack Obama’s official website (see link below)
Marxists/Socialists/Communists for Obama
“This group is for self-proclaimed Marxists/Communists/Socialists for the election of Barack Obama to the Presidency. By no means is he a true Marxist, but under Karl Marx’s writings we are to support the party with the best interests of the mobilization of the proletariat. Though the Democratic Socialists of America or the Communist Patty of America may have more Socialististic values, it is pointless to vote for these candidates due to the fact that there is virutally no chance they will be elected on a National level. The members of this group are not Leninists, Stalinists, etc. and do not support or condone the actions of North Korea, China, Cuba or any other self-procalimed “Marxist States.” They do not in anyway represent the Marxist philosophy nor do they represent Socialism/ Communsim. We support Barack Obama because he knows what is best for the people!”
