Would Palin help working mothers?

We have always wondered whether Sarah Palin really represents working moms. After all, how many career women do you know who have five children and are running for the Vice Presidency of the United States. Now a group of 200,000 mothers are putting the question directly to the Governor, "What will you do for moms?" Or at least they’re trying to.

The grassroots group MomsRising wants to know where Palin stands on paid maternity leave. What’s her position on expanded family and flexible work hours, on better healthcare? "Where is she on all of this? I just don’t feel any empathy for here as a woman," Nina Dulabaum, a Chicago educator and independent voter told the Associated Press.

So MomsRising wrote their questions down, got a petition signed and took the letter to Palin’s Washington office but they were turned away and told to mail it to Alaska. The group says it’s concerned Palin doesn’t share the positions of working mothers on key issues. The group’s co-founder Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner insists she’s thrilled to see a working mom on the ticket but says there are alot of differences between Palin and most other working women.

"Look at what she had: preset pay, healthcare, paid sick days, a salary high enough so her husband could help care for the baby," Rowe-Finkbeiner said. "Unfortunately that is not the case for most working mothers."

After the St Paul convention polls suggested a Palin was causing a huge surge of support for the Republican ticket among women. That’s fading now and I wonder whether more working moms aren’t asking is Sarah Palin really so like us after all? Sure, she has that everywoman appeal but as her stand on the issues is being examined her standing in the polls is falling.

Oh she is just like Joe and Jane Six-pack. Only her income is slightly above them.
Anyway, it would be very interesting to know what she has to say about the subject.

Of course Palin would not be good for working women. Her overall lack of understanding of the issues is undeniably a detriment to working women. To listen to her try to regurgitate the McCain policy of health care and his proposed $5000 tax credit is laughable. It is obvious she does not understand the implications of a fixed credit and skyrocketing annual medical premiums (and that’s if you can get coverage in the first place!) But in my opinion, her biggest downfall for working women is her complicity in being used as a token “woman” in McCains campaign. I have worked my whole adult life as a financial professional owning my own firm, and have had to work so very hard to prove that I am not the type of person Palin is now proving to be: all show and no substance. She should know she is not qualified for the job, but persists through ego and self propaganda. She will put the reputation of working women back decades.

Of course, any woman can hold public office or do any number of things so long as she’s got a regiment of child care people on tap. In Sara’s case apparently she’s drafter her daughters, but seems to be letting the older daughters go unsupervised. Babysitters and nannies can easily take care of the kids and babies. But for those of us who prefer to raise our own kids, the answer has to be “no”. You can’t do it all.

How many working mothers do you know who are worth over a million dollars? Think she’s going to be seen rubbing shoulders with, or championing, the normal working mothers, while she’s clawing and kicking her way to join the ‘elite’ ?

Good questions! Now I’m reading that Sarah is worth over $1 million, owns multiple homes, has investments all over Alaska. One of “us”? Hardly. http://www.time.com/time/politics/article/0,8599,1846372,00.html

Palin’s record in office does not appear to support working mothers at all. She appears much more intent on playing the men’s game the men’s way, just smarter. She has abused the power of her office, obstructed justice using non-govt email accounts, mixed personal and political in many instances – and she has been able to get further ahead on an accelerated basis than her opponents. She is so uninformed and not well-read, she is unable to converse adequately on the work/life issues of the day for working moms. In my experience, working moms need absolute respect and credibility in their jobs to maximize any work/life balance opportunities. Palin is such an embarrassment in allowing herself to be used and placed in line for a job for which she is obviously so unqualified. She is only playing into the stereotype of women in the workplace that take on too much, are promoted on a basis other than ability, etc. that so many of us have had to combat our whole working life.

All I’m hearing here is woe is me. She has more than me. What am I going to get? Me, Me, Me. Whine, whine, whine. All the bloggers venting their anger and rage (and ignorance) must get their talking points from Big Brother at the at Democrat Central Peoples Committee. Sarah does wonders for women’s self image and their daughter’s self image that they too some day will also be running for president or vice president. More power to Sarah. Complaining about not making the same amount of money? Hell, go to Alaska where wages are way higher and work your tail off. But most important quit spending all your money on drugs, fool. WWTerry

I don’t think Palin represent women period. If McClain was really senisitive to women and our concerns he would have picked someone like Christy Whitman. All I’ve been hearing is how Palin is being picked on. When Hillary Clinton was running for president she stayed in the forefront. She didn’t shiled herself from the media. She has face much criticism both personal and professional, and she handled it very well. Palin may be a pit bull, but she’s still a puppy. This is not the time to put a puppy in an important position. It’s interesting how people think Palin can gain ground after only one debate. It doesn’t matter how well she does people see through it. She was asked a straight forward question about what news papers she reads. People are concerned about her knowledge base. She couldn’t give a straight forward answer. When people commented on her respnse, she got defensive and started talking about gotcha jounalism as if she got asked a trick question. She made a comment about the journalism world changing since she’s gotten her degree. Perhaps thats the problem–she’s out of touch with the real world just like her partner McCain. When she was asked about Pakistan her response was more in line with Obama than McCain. that’s not the media’s fault. She made a comment about her listening to Biden since 2nd grade, and she was sarcastic about it. Yet, when she was asked about it she tried to clean it up. A lot can be read into her statement about listening to Biden since 2nd grade. If that’s the case, why isn’t she more knowlegable when it comes to political issues? How is it that she’s so well informed with issues that concern democrats and knows very little about issues concerning the republic party. She couldn’t even comment on the Bush Doctrine.

I just saw several videos of Palin speaking, I just don’t understand how anyone can think this is the best woman candidate out there, this has to be a joke!

Poor, middle class, wealthy, black, white, latino, oriental or native american women, she does not represent them only Joe the six pack!! Sarah Palin has her own AGENDA!!!

Posted by: sisterdearest09 | October 2, 2008, 12:50 am 12:50 am

Of course she understands the life of a working mother….some here amaze me!
So she has a net worth of a million dollars..her homes value is half of it and it was built by her husband so probaby did not cost anywhere near that to build.
She also has a working 25 year marriage to a husband that helps them financially. Where is the father of your children?
Teenage kids get pregnant even with a parent that is home all day…so do not be so judgemental.
I see alot of people who must envy her other they would not be so critical.

Sarah Palin doesn’t know if she is for them or not.
All she has read is the Bible and she has also made sure she gets protected from Witchcraft.
All these 200,000 moms are infidel witches to her.
Enough of republican lies.
Enough of republicans in power.

Sorry, Sarah doesn’t answer policy questions.
She just crinkles up her nose and plunges into broad generalities that twist and turn like a drunken driver on an icy road. She’s hoping everyone is so shocked that they have forgotten what the question was in the first place.

Matt, your wife must be very smart if she is married to a closed mind small person like you appear to be. Relax, take life easy. Bring a breath of fresh air into your life. Listen to Sarah Palin a few times without being judgmental. She is a hard working woman who deserves your respect and most of all your vote. Remember the Latin word for left is sinister. And Obama wrote in his book that he was a poor but heavy drug user when he was a teenager and in his early twenties. If you are poor and Black you sell drugs to get drugs. Do you really want a former drug dealer as your president? Hum?

Palin is better than Joe Biden who has mini-seizure attacks periodically. Hello, Joe, back in 1929, TV did not exist!!! Plus, he is so talkative on a point that he makes absolutely, no sense. He is by no means would be a good executive. He would put you to sleep. He has no original thoughts. He is known to plaquerize. Plus, he has several kids, too. The man is known to make things up. What kinda of father is this man. He may have a kind soul, but he seems to lost his memory or cannot control himself. He is a bad father.

Posted by: yodaxl7 | October 2, 2008, 2:09 am 2:09 am

Sarah Palin is only a bad example of a working woman because she is a conservative woman. I know plenty of women who are working and have other people take of there children while they are at work. They are not millionaires. That is what daycare is for and nannies. Give me a break you hypocrites. Who was taking care of Nancy Pelosi’s 5 children while she was climbing up the political ladder?? Hypocrites is all I can say. Any actress, MA heiress, Mill Valley socialite etc.. has had tons of help raising their kids. It is only the conservative woman who gets denigrated and insulted. Limousine liberals are the worst!!! If she believed in killing her babies then she would be praised. Unreal. Obama’s wife works and does not stay home with her kids. No one is talking about that. I’m sure they don’t have a nanny. Just like their kids are too good for the Hyde Park public schools. They go to South Side private schools. Good thing they are just normal folks like you and me. Quit talking about McCain’s 15 homes(or whatever he has) and Palin’s paltry million when Kerry Edwards was your last ticket and the Kennedys are shown yachting around Boston harbor at the DNC. Give me a break!!!! Realize that if you win the election it is by default!!! Everything is as bad as it can be with and the election is still close. Of course the answer isn’t that Republicans have better policy it is because we are racist. The only color I see in Obama is that he is green. NOT READY TO LEAD!!!!

Posted by: cadrmn | October 2, 2008, 2:15 am 2:15 am

Nancy Pelosi is amoral politican to the core. She was against using contribution money to pay spouses who work for her. She has payed her husband 4 times more than someone who is not a family member. I wonder how she is setting an example of motherhood to her 5 kids. Then, the way she make her paritsan speeches that hateful. What if her daughters were watching TV. What kinda woman set such a bad example who is a leader of the house in congress.

Why do I keep hearing that this candidate is every woman? It defies reality.
First, She’s not for the middle class (i.e. Bush/McCain tax cuts ONLY for the wealthest),
Second, she’s not for the poor (doesn’t want to raise minimum wages).
Third, she doesn’t think every woman has the right to choose her own destiny (reproductive rights).
Fourth, she doesn’t believe in equal pay for equal work (Bush/McCain oppose the Lilly Ledbetter Suit),
Finally, she doesn’t even put her children first (i.e. country first).
And finally, finally, she doesn’t even put her country first (she’s trying to sale us a bill of good about her readiness)
That only leaves the 2 alcoholic Janes in a beer stupor too hung over to know better, thatn to actually believe the McCain ticket represents women well. (And Mrs. Rothchild).
Long live the legacies of Hil, Oprah, Geraldyn, Golda , Tzipi, Eleanor, Benazir, Margaret, Cristina (Fernadez), Condie, and countless thousands of unique, gifted, persevering, extraordinary, women who worked hard, made sacrifices, did what it took, to bring an “A” GAME to the world arena. Not just some silly slogan about who you represent.

Posted by: renu1 | October 2, 2008, 2:29 am 2:29 am

Obama is great making speeches. Like he did at the convention. He had his two daughters on stage saying hi to dad on the screen. How can he put his two daughters in the spot light. Obama is a talker, not a doer. So, if he does win, he will not fulfill his so called tax cuts to the middle class. He will change govt to socialistic govt. His tax plan will increase the tax people who makes 250k or more and use that money to give to the poor. The poor people who makes up 45 % who do not pay income taxes will recieve a welfare check. This is an extra expense to already 1 trillion dollars we spent on bailing out wallstreet. All of his talked proposals will not come to reality. His health plan is a socialistic form as well. It is bad enough that ER is over-run by people who cannot pay. Obama will have us in line for years to even just to see a doctor. I pray that it will not happen. If so, we all will pay for it.

Why do I keep hearing that this candidate is every woman? It defies reality.
She represents women who wants to succeed and raise a family. No one is saying that she represents all political views of every woman. Hillary Clinton did not either.
First, She’s not for the middle class (i.e. Bush/McCain tax cuts ONLY for the wealthest),
McCain tax plan is a tax cut for everyone, not just those upper brackets.
Plus, his tax cut for the small businesses and corp. will increase jobs. Plus these jobs would stay in U.S.
Second, she’s not for the poor (doesn’t want to raise minimum wages).
Better education lends to better jobs with higher pay. Plus, she would support a tax credit for those who have kids.
Third, she doesn’t think every woman has the right to choose her own destiny (reproductive rights).
Maybe not on abortion rights, but she is for women who can choose her career. She is for women who wants equal pay. She is for women who wants to choose her own destiny, except on abortion rights.
Finally, she doesn’t even put her children first (i.e. country first).
And finally, finally, she doesn’t even put her country first (she’s trying to sale us a bill of good about her readiness)
You have no point, but hateful to women who have family.
Women who hate women hate themselves!!

Posted by: yodaxl7 | October 2, 2008, 2:39 am 2:39 am

Voting against Bush’s tax cuts and letting them expire does in fact tax people from 45,000 and up HELLO. Minimum Wage increase does nothing for the poor. Reproductive choice should not mean I can kill my baby, but rather I have the choice to NOT get pregnant with FREE contraceptive. Yeah Palin doesn’t want equal pay-that’s idiotic and not true. Choosing to work makes any woman not choose her family first?? Obama isn’t ready to lead and he is the top of your ticket. Oprah is a sell out according to her own race, and so is Condie(who I completely love) they call her a house negro…..look what Barack did to Hillary and then didn’t choose her!! No need to say anything more……Obama is not for women period. Not even the democratic women.

Posted by: cadrman | October 2, 2008, 2:41 am 2:41 am

Obama plan has deeper tax cuts for 80% of all Americans and 95% of those that collect a paycheck than McCain’s period.

I’ll help you out. Here’s a link:

Okay…just from reading your comments, I can tell you’re liberals. Instead of looking in every nook and cranny for ‘negative’ things about Palin, perhaps you should try facing the negatives in Obama. For starters, he associates himself with a self-professed terrorist. Second, he’s been a senator for a while and hasn’t put forth any new bills or contributed any truly significant change during his stay. However, he has had time to write 2 books, run for president, and bad-mouth McCain, Palin, and other CONSERVATIVES who have the same values as the most Americans. Hmmm…

Posted by: Jen | October 2, 2008, 3:55 am 3:55 am

At this stage of the game, whether Sarah Palin is good for working mothers is besides the point. I, and many other women, now realize that the ‘women’s movement’ does not have room at the table for us.
The behavior of women towards Sarah Palin reminds me of the office ladies’ room, with hisses of, “Do you believe her? She does this, this, and that. She can’t be a good mother. Jeez, her own daughter got pregnant. And what’s up with her having a baby in her 40′s? Doesn’t she know about birth control by now?”
Once again women have limited the scope of who is considered to be a ‘feminist’. How can we expect equality in the man’s world when we won’t even allow it in our own world?

Posted by: mary | October 2, 2008, 5:06 am 5:06 am

who have the same values as the most Americans
==
McCain and Palin have the same values as most Americans? Where did you get that tidbit of information? Maybe the values of American circa 1955. Americans are fiercely independent and don’t like having religion and saber rattling shoved down their throats. McCain, ONCE a man of honor, has show very clearly that he has zero honor left. He’d sell out his own mother to get elected. His tv ads don’t even pretend to speak the truth.
Plain and simple, he’s become a LIAR.
And Americans hate liars.

And Obama would be good for working women? There isn’t a single thing in his voting record that suggests this. Other than his speeches I don’t see any direct action he’s taken to give him an edge here.

If she won’t release her tax returns, how in the hell does anyone know that she and Biden are about the same? Neither her religion nor her party status (Republican) allow her to be on women’s side. In her religion, women must allow their men to guide them in all decisions, hence First Dud being the shadow governor. Like most Republicans she would deny a woman the right to make decisions about her own body. She charged rape victims for rape kits in her little town of Wasilla. She fired her public safety commissioner when he arranged a trip to DC to support a domestic violence package. Her running mate has fought against equal pay for women.
On top of all that, she’s a damn post turtle. You know what those are… you’re out in the boonies and along the side of the road you see a turtle balancing on top of a fence post. You know she didn’t get up there by herself, she doesn’t belong up there, she doesn’t know what to do while she is up there, and you just wonder what kind of idiot put her up there to begin with.

Chuck said: “Trust me when the pollsters call people are not telling them the truth, they will say they are voting for Obama but really will vote for McCain!”
Sorry, Chuck, but YOU are the one that got this all WRONG! Unfortunately, our society tends to be very racially bias and the real truth is that many white, working class people, especially males, would NEVER admit they would every vote for a black man so they HIDE the fact that they intend to vote for Obama because they cannot SUVIVE ANOTHER 4 YEARS OF REPUBLICAN RULE! Frankly, most of these individuals have NOT been polled and so instead of an “October Surprise” there is more likely to be a “November Surprise” on election night. I also believe that because of this “I DON’T WANT MY CO-WORKERS AND FRIENDS TO KNOW I AM VOTING FOR OBAMEA” are instead telling everyone they intend to vote for McCain. Now if you THINK I am wrong about this remember we are only about 30 days away from finding out!

Say Wisdom, in regards to your little “debate” with Chuck, here’s the real truth.
No REAL man would ever support Obama, regardless of race. A REAL man would know that we’re in dangerous times with the war on terrorists, Russia flexing it’s muscles, China building up it’s military (aircraft carriers/subs), and Iran threatening the world. Our European “allies” are militarily weak. Did you ever wonder WHY our enemies support Obama? It’s because they see him as WEAK! Can you imagine the likes of Putin looking at Obama as our leader in that picture of him looking like a 98 lb weakling in his little bicycle outfit and goofy biking helmet? He’s GOT to be laughing. No such laugh at a former warrior and a FEMALE VP shooting an M-16. Those 3 visuals tell it all.

Of what possible motive could you have for saying you were voting for Obama when you have such a great war hero and all American that wraps himself in the flag at every opportunity? I should think you would be PROUD to stand up and tell everyone of your support! Why would you want to hid you respect for him? Conservative, Libral, male, female; what a lot of crap. America needs leadership in a bad way. McCain, Palin is a bad joke. McCain is an idiot, not a mavrick 4th from the bottom of his class, a loose canon, reckless and self-serving. His choice for VP is just one of the terrible choices he has made more resently. Defend him but don’t put him in charge of anything. wasn’t GW enough!

Wisdom First:
Fact is I dont have to lie, I am not voiting for Obama! Nothing to do with his skin color but rather his liberal views, and not being able to stand up like a man and take a stand on importan issues. Obama voted Present over 100 time so he did not have to take a stand on the issues. Obmama took a week to come out on this credit crisis and what did he come out with? The same ideas as McCain. The other day he got caught saying “McCain deserved NO CREDIT” thinking the bill was going to pass the house, but when it failed he was too busy pulling his pants up! The man has NO clue! And by the way, you liberal Dems are always the one bringing up the race issue, please tell me ONE republican who has made any racial comment! I can name several on your side of the fence 1) Jessie 2) Hastings 3) Rev. Wright (wrong) do you want me to keep going. Fact is even Jessie hates Obama, or did you forget he want to cut off his (testicals). Please stop thinking this comes down to race, the only people even mentioning this is your liberal Dems!

According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Alaska’s rape rate is 2.5 times the national average.
Alaska also has the highest rate per capita of men murdering women. Ninety percent of Alaskans would vote to increase funding for victim service programs because according to the coalition, programs are in dire need of more funding in order to serve the sheer volume of victims. Seventy-five percent of Alaskans have been or know someone who has been the victim of sexual assault or domestic violence. Alaska’s domestic violence shelters, sexual assault services and programs for survivors have seen relatively small increase funding. In 2008, the state budget included an additional $300,000 in funding for victim service programs. According to Alaska’s Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, in 2009, Governor Palin’s budget includes an increase in funds to help shelters offset the higher costs of fuel, utilities and insurance. But the extraordinary levels of violence against in the state of Alaska and the underlying causes still require a much greater level of state-level funding oversight. According to the Alliance for Reproductive Justice, who lobbied to address these issues in 2007, the Governor did not respond. The Alliance has this to say on their website “Governor Palin did not deliver and did not take a leadership role on any of these issues. In fact, this year, when there was a 7 billion dollar state surplus she did not step up to the plate for the women and children of Alaska…we were truly disappointed with her lack of action on this critical public health issue.” Most of Alaska’s funding for sexual assault and violence against women programs comes from the federal government. . Peggy Brown, executive director of the Alaska Network on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault said “She’s really done a lot of work on oil and gas, but when it comes to violence against women and children…we haven’t been on her radar as a priority.” This is absolutely shocking. As mayor and governor why didn’t she try to influence laws to help protect these women and children? Why didn’t she increase her police force to try and protect these women and children? These issues were there before she became mayor and governor. However, as both a woman and mother one would think rape and domestic violence would be one of her major concerns. Alaska also has a high rate of incest. Many people don’t know that the day the news showed the welcome home Palin in Alaska that same day they had a Reject Palin Rally and over 1,000 people attended (mainly women). It was the largest attended rally the state of Alaska has ever had. This is fact not gossip. The first responsibility of a leader is to protect the people. Palin has failed to protect the women and children of alaska. Alaska’s population is about 650,000. If she can’t protect Alaska, how can she protect our country? She appears to be knowledgable in the area of energy. However, it takes more than that to run a country.

Regarding the initial question: What would Palin do for working mothers. I am one of those working mothers who “worked” her way out of her own poor decisions and chose to leave a bad marriage. I had two toddlers when I made the decision to leave my husband, who decided his needs were more important than those of his boys. While he partied, I worked my butt off to make sure my children had everything they needed. I didn’t get in line at the welfare office, I didn’t fight for child support I was never going to collect, and I didn’t waste time feeling sorry for myself and wondering what the world was going to do to improve my situation.
I hit the pavement running. When I had pulled myself out of the financial nihtmare I was left to handle, I scraped together enought money and bought my own home. The day I was moving in to my home, a lady down the street was bragging about the financial assistance she received from the Feds to buy her home. I had my tubes tied after giving birth to my second child (I was married by the way)and she was pregnant with her fourth child – all her children had different fathers. I wanted to scream. Why in the hell do my tax dollars get spent on people who choose pregnancy as an occupation? When will people have to pay for their own choices? I am all for helping children, but when are we going to start making women responsible for their own decisions? I was raised to believe feminism was about the strength of women, but all I ever hear is a bunch of whining females looking for another handout. It needs to stop. Women need to stop asking everyone else to pay for their stupidity. I worked hard to earn a decent living and now I would be considered “the elite” for my efforts. I am the same person I was when my children and I ate off the same plate. I managed an office of 20 women and nothing made me happier than to help those women realize the power they had in their own hands to change their situations. Come on ladies – let’s put on our big girl panties and handle our problems. So, I do not expect Palin to right the wrongs created by my own choices. I don’t expect Palin to apologize for making the right decisions and being successful in her life. Palin appeals to me because she represents people like me.
