Closing Argument: The Presidential Pooch
On Friday’s Nightline we brought you three great stories — The rise in gun sales since Obama’s election, a piece on Obama’s first press conference as President-elect, and a Nigtline Playlist featuring Kristin Chenoweth.
At the end the show, we aired a small segment on the yet-to-be-selected White House Dog. Of all the promises that Barack Obama has offered, it’s the one he made to his daughters last Tuesday night that might provoke the biggest backlash if it is broken.
Heading out of the piece, we had planned on soliciting your ideas for what type of dog is best fit for the White House, but thanks to timing, things did not go as planned. So we ask you now, albeit a bit late, what type of dog should the Obama family get? Give us your thoughts below.

all I can say is this is Brady from Petfinder…a rescue from …IOWA.

I am from NH and as someone who thinks the Obama’s owe a lot to Iowa…and this is a black labradoodle…that would be awesome for the girls…

If he gets a dog from a breeder or any place other than a shelter, I will be beyond furious and will write telling him so. There is no excuse for that when there are millions of dogs with their lives on the line in shelters. Any type of dog they are looking for is in a shelter. He can set an example of compassion. It’s what he campaigned on; he needs to step up.

Rescue a retired racing greyhound. They are easy for people with allergies and super mellow and sweet! They usually retire them between 2-5 years old and they live 12-15 years.
If you really want a puppy, they have puppies who aren’t fast enough or competitive enough that are “retired” too.
Greyhounds are the way to go! Plus, they would love an oval office!

Should at the very least be a black and white dog.

As you can tell from JC in Texas’ comment, they’ll take a lot of heat if they don’t get a rescue dog, though I don’t consider that entirely fair to the Obamas. They have done everything right so far as the dog is concerned — waited, pondered breeds, discussed responsibilities, etc. Those golden doodles they are considering are so cute!

Okay, I just checked out dl’s link, and Brady would be one adorable White House dog! I vote for Brady, too!

My wife and I have a certain breed of dog, which we used to show and raise, until 1994. Now we have three pets of our favorite breed, and we’re HOPING Obama will NOT choose this breed. No, it’s not because of our political views.
Whatever breed IS chosen will become an overnight fad, and the puppy mills will start cranking them out like a copy machine.
What we DON’T need these days is more puppies! It’s OK for SERIOUS breeders and exhibitors who actively show their dogs, but having a breed in the White House guarantees instant popularity for that breed. TOO MUCH popularity!

Rhys
if they adopt a mutt dog even a young one…even one that has distinctive parentage…but mixed……from a rescue…
it’s good for all those dogs that need to be rescued.
but they definitely should use that petfinder site…because that would get people away from the stores.

and Rhys I agree
but at Xmas “Marley and Me” comes out
if you haven’t read the book…
UNfortunately …everyone is going to be wanting to get a yellow lab after that tear jerker.

West Highland White Terriers (Westies) are allergy free and adorable to boot. There are great folks doing Rescue work with Westies, I know one in Georgia.

I think that a cairn terrior would be great for the white house girls!
they are clean, very playful, great with kids, sleep through the night, potty train very quickly, very very obedient, and have an amazing personality!
they look the best in the wheat color and they really do not shed!!

No kidding, adopted 2 dobermans while my daughter was young {at different times}. You have to study their behaviour around the child, and if you have other pets, you have to keep that in mind. And training is key, but I would imagine that there might be a few people in the area that might be able to facilitate that.. Other than that, hypo-allergenic, best friend guard dog.

I have asthma…sorry, don’t think she should have a dog and the doctor that was interviewed was the only one to say it. I agree, unfortunately.

Obama said that he has two opposing issues – a ‘hypoallergenic’ breed vs a shelter dog who is a “mutt like him”
Please be aware that not all shelter dogs are mutts…purebreds, even w/AKC pedigree, can also be found in our nation’s shelters
