Edwards Back in the Spotlight; Affair Remains in the Dark

ABC News’ Raelyn Johnson reports: Former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards returned to the political stage this evening in his first public appearance after admitting he had an extramarital affair.

Edwards delivered an address to students at Indiana University.  In prepared remarks he spoke about the 2008 presidential race, but made no mention of his headline-grabbing admission that sent him into seclusion for past three months.

"The result of last Tuesday was not an accident," said Edwards speaking of President-elect Barack Obama. "Americans want change and they wanted something different."

He reaffirmed praise for Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, and noted that Obama was a more formidable opponent for Republican John McCain because of the long primary battle he fought with her.

In a lighthearted moment, Edwards said McCain "came back from the dead to win the Republican nomination." As the audience laughed, he quickly noted his comment was not a joke about the 72-year-old senator.

Following his remarks, Edwards answered presubmitted questions from students.  He was reportedly paid $35,000 for his speech.

The event marks Edwards’ first foray back into the public spotlight, after admitting exclusively to ABC News in August that he had an affair with Rielle Hunter, a videographer who was hired to work on his 2008 presidential campaign.

Edwards has since kept a low profile, canceling all speaking engagements during the general election season, in order to avoid distracting attention from Obama.  The former senator and vice presidential candidate played no role in his party’s nominating convention, this past August in Denver.

Edwards left students with the very message he left voters with during this campaign—that ending poverty is the central cause of his life, and will remain his life’s work.

Ben Phelps of the Indiana Daily Student contributed to this report.

Between his multi-million dollar mansion, 600$ hair cuts and his hedge fund consultant job, Edwards like all other liberal democrats is serious about tackling the issue of poverty.

The wonderful thing about America is that our memory is so short that even the most despicable of our leaders can ALWAYS make a comeback.

who would pay a liar this much money to speak to students?

his pathetic need for the spotlight is sickening – he needs to crawl back under whichever slimy rock he’s been hiding under these last few months!
no, John, you’re not forgiven, you’re not getting a second chance … buh-bye!

Posted by: Bernard Profitendieu | November 11, 2008, 6:29 pm 6:29 pm

Any of you ever hear about forgiveness? what he did was dispicable, especially in light of his wife’s health problems, but he still has a good message. Who can help the poor if not the well heeled? As far as paying liars to speak to students, I believe Newt Gingrich not only got paid to speak to students, he was paid to teach them.

John Edwards (unlike many of the others who are now trying to scratch and claw there way into a Presidential Cabinet post) has over the last two years shown that he understands the problems that lay ahead for this country, and he would be an intelligent and competent
addition to the President Obama’s Administration.

Posted by: Cherubim | November 11, 2008, 6:57 pm 6:57 pm

Indiana university is better off donating $35000 to the charity as this man always has used poverty to his political enrichment, has lived and enjoyed lavish life-style not to mention his house and his ” Hair cut”
Democrat should stay away from such politicians.

Posted by: Ed | November 11, 2008, 7:06 pm 7:06 pm

Edwards probably would be a competent member of the President’ staff, but I don’t think it would be a wise move on Abama’s part to include him. There are too many other bright and capable people out there without the baggage. I think Edwards is starting to take the right path for him: get into anti poverty work through private and non-profits, help raise awareness and money, but stay out of politcs.

Posted by: Rodney Dickerson | November 11, 2008, 7:12 pm 7:12 pm

As a VP candidate in 2004, he did not win his own state . It means they knew him up-close…what we have found out now about him.
As a crusader for poverty do not run around the campuses for the hand out, with rising tuition cost, Indiana university should have better sense before doling out $35000 check.

Living here in NC, I can tell you that John Edwards has done very little for anyone, unless it is profitable for him. They set up a scholarship fund in Greene County and then shut it down also. I guess he’s just too busy trying to keep up with his wife and mistress.

What else do we want to know about his affair?
It’s his business. Mind your own!!

Posted by: Rubyred Republican | November 11, 2008, 7:39 pm 7:39 pm

I’m never surprised anymore when someone is found to have an affair. It seems to be the norm and not the exception. I tend to think lot of this is investigated initially by a political adversary’s aide or employee and then leaked to the press.

Posted by: Barb | November 11, 2008, 7:50 pm 7:50 pm

why were the same pople complaining about a $400 haircut for edwards unconcerned about McCain’s $6000/month makeup habit?

Posted by: Yes_We_will | November 11, 2008, 7:56 pm 7:56 pm

Senator Edwards has done alot for raising our conscious about poverty. He is a voice that doesn’t let us forget poverty must be addressed. He is a good man who has taken a couple of wrong turns. Believe me living with someone who is critically ill is very draining and depressing no matter how much you love them. John Edwards got a girlfriend. When I was taking care of my critically ill parents I got a dog. Who’s to say which was better.

Funny how a Democrat who has an affair is a “liar” but a Republican Presidential candidate who cheated on his wife as she lay in her death bed is an “Amerian hero”. It’s also funny how being labeled a cheater is Play 1A in the Republican playbook of politics, yet Obama never once mentioned McCain’s past infidelities. Something to think about, children.

Posted by: Namaste | November 11, 2008, 8:28 pm 8:28 pm

Edwards is just way too slick and always has been. Like Palin, he should just go quietly off to do something else.

Posted by: hopesprings52 | November 11, 2008, 8:34 pm 8:34 pm

Senator Edwards appears to want to work in the area of poverty and that is great..and worthy. He can do it on his own…not as one of Obama’s team.
My heart went out to Mrs. Edwards..to have a partner break your trust is devastating.
When will men stop thinking with their penis…and start using their brain?
Ditto for the unfaithful wives / girlfriends who use sex to gratifie their agendas.

Maybe it is also time Americans stopped mixing private and public lives of people.
This pretence and stubborn mis -belief that man and women don’t cheat or whatever you wanna call is silly. We are human beings on top of that mortal.Edwards is good at other things and not good in others.that’s normal.

How much did Mr. Edwards give to charity, I bet we gave more than he did! I know that I gave more than Biden and Obama put together last year and I only make 150K

OK, all you “good Christians”… there must be a NEW bible out there you’re following… which would explain why you are OBSESSED with people’s sins. This guy did something awful – but not to YOU. His wife wants to deal within the family – everyone knows about it – but can’t we at least be kind to HER and not bring it up at every, every point? And the writer of this article needs to do more than use ‘spell check’ – try not to shoot the articles off till you’ve read them and see if you’ve missed a word. But why was the title of this article “Affair Remains In The Dark”. What sweet morsel of information do you want brought ‘to light’? It’s a very unflattering aspect of your nature to focus on this. OK, he’s back. So what if he has a lot of money? So do a lot of people – the McCains, for example, the Bushes, the Cheneys, etc. etc. The fact that he wants to help the poor – that’s BAD? He doesn’t HAVE to, thank God some people with money are willing to throw their weight and expertise into helping those who are needy.

Mr Edwards Has not lied as much as Mr Obama about his personal life.
Mr Edwards lied about a personal life having an affair.
Mr Obama lied about his family and everyone of his personal Friends and aquantineces numerious times, plus NAFTA and Iraq and who knows what else.
Mr Ewards Did face the nation and admit and apologize for his lie.
Mr Obama has yet to Apologize to the American people. when caught Mr Obama continued to lie to the American People.
So there is no Reason to Treat Mr Edwards than with any less respect than you do Mr Obama.
You Are an Absolute Hypocrite if you do.

You want to know what John Edward’s biggest problem is? He’s a phony. He is Bill Clinton without any sort of depth or personality. He’s the Democratic Mitt Romney (sans the infidelity) – all style no substance. He should remain out of the spotlight.

I really don’t see how we can be so righteous about politicians faults. Are we so pure? Even some saints before they became saints lived a carnal life. No one dragged us to hear Edwards speech. People weren’t chained to their chairs for the evening. How do we know the 35,000 didn’t go to chemotherapy for his wife and not haircuts. Come on.

******************************************** Of course there are a lot of Republican men who have affairs with women, including Newt Grinwich who had an affair and divorced his wife as she lay on her death bed from cancer.
But more often than not in recent history more Republican men have chosen other men or boys to have their affairs with.

What a sad comment to make about John McCain coming back from the dead especially since your own wife is dying of cancer. How cruel can this man be, especially after having an affair and child. When he loses his wife would he want someone saying that about her. He should apologize.

“GUS: What do you mean ‘male Democrates have affairs with women—can’t say the same abut Republican men.’”
I think he was referring specifically to Foley’s torrid emails with teenage boys and Craig’s anonymous hookups in airport washrooms.
I’m certain that there are any number of prominant Republicans whose extramarital affairs are perfectly heterosexual.
What happens between consenting adults (yes, Foley, that means over 18) is not a factor in my consideration of the fitness of a candidate for public office, unless such behavior conflicts very starkly with the candidate’s public position on policy issues (yes, Foley, that includes anti-predator legislation).

I’m more than willing to forgive Edwards (for having an affair while his wife was battling cancer…sheesh…my wife gets mad at me if I leave my socks on the floor). But it’s a very different thing to be willing to renew your trust in someone, especially when they are reticent to really come clean. And sorry John (and Bill), but who you are in your private life is who you really are, so I don’t buy into that argument.

Pretty soon Edwards’ indiscretions will be forgotten and he will be an upstanding man, just like Slick Willie Clinton. Obama and his leftist illuminati cabinet will be able to have carte blanche to do what they want because the liberal MSM will be there to cover it up.

If the top person in our country can have an affair in the Oval Office, lie about it and then be heralded as the best president since sliced bread was invented, then of course Edwards can do it. Our morals are so far down the toilet in this country that Obama and his leftist illuminati cabinet will fit right in.

All have missed the point. Who set up John Edwards in feeding the media information about his disgraceful affair?
Who benefited from destroying Edwards?
Who kept Edwards out of the DNC in Denver?
Who used Edwards affair to keep the media from looking into the Lawrence Sinclair association with Barack Obama and the murder of Obama’s friend Donald Young?
Edwards confirms in what I have written on in this, he praised Hillary Clinton and does not praise Obama.
Edwards was offered up as a scapegoat by Axelrod Inc. Think about how loathsome Edwards is, but ponder who would do this to Edwards knowing his wife battles cancer.
Edwards appearance marks an interesting political landscape in he has just joined the Hillary Clinton camp.
It would be nice if ABC actually investigated all of the above.
