Fast-forwarding Through TV Ads
With TV revenue on the decline this year, an industry group says that local TV ad sales are expected to drop about nine percent in 2009. One reason contributing to the decrease is digital video recorders like TiVo, which allow viewers to fast forward through commercials. About a quarter of U.S. households have DVR’s and the numbers are on the rise. But as Ned Potter reports, advertisers shouldn’t necessarily abandon broadcast TV…they may just need to change their strategy.

I was sitting here watching your program on how people homes that are in foreclosure will be allow to stay in their homes. What about the people who lost their homes already due to the same mess that’s going on now. I lost my home, because my husband job close and I couldn’t make that $2,000 dollars monthly payment by myself. We lost our home on August 8, 2007.

What about them?

Are you one-a those who surrendered to the subprime sales pitch, not thinking ahead?

One “strategy” may be to disable the fast forward during the spot cluster.
However, they’re gonna have to come up with a way to clamp me in the chair cuz, if they disable the wind button, I’ll just go to live programming for a couple-a minutes, or leave the room for a snack. Whatever they do, I’ll find a way around it so that I DON’T do what they want me to do.

$2000 per month? Wow!
One must always think ahead.
What if I lost my job?
What if I get sick?
Is the mortgage a FIXED mortgage or can it go up and up?
Did we learn anything?
I’m sorry, but you have to take responsibility.
Was your home ‘fancy’ with all the bells and whistles?
Why didn’t you just buy a small modest home (a ‘fixer upper’)?
Was your location great?
Why didn’t you go further ‘out’?
See, you could have done a lot of things different. We did. We bought way below what we thought we could afford.
We are still in that house – it’s not fancy at all – but it’s paid for.
Sorry, you lost your home, but well – did you learn anything?
Do it different the next time.
Tough lesson, but lesson learned, I hope.

Wow Mr Incredible. How nice for you that everything has gone your way. My husband got laid off last month for the 3rd time in 10 yrs. We own a modest home which was definitely within our means but circumstances can change things! We are busting our butts to keep our home!

Shouldn’t have bought a house you can’t afford.

I stopped watching broadcast TV, satellite TV and cable TV 10 years ago. Other people I know have too. So, what’s the big deal about this anyway. Ad sales are dropping because people are switching to DVDs and the Internet!
