Obama Girls to Visit the White House

ABC News’ Matthew Jaffe reports: A week after she toured her new home alongside her husband, President-elect Barack Obama, on Tuesday, Michelle Obama brings her daughters and her mother to the White House at the invitation of first lady Laura Bush.

Mrs. Obama is in Washington this week looking for new schools with her two daughters, Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7. But their future residence also warranted a visit, so with Michelle’s mom, Marion Robinson, the four will head across town this afternoon to the White House.

President Bush’s daughters Jenna and Barbara are also planning to be in town for the visit.

"In addition to bringing the girls to D.C. to visit choices for their new schools, to make sure they find the right fit, Mrs. Obama and her family are also visiting the White House briefly this afternoon," Mrs. Obama’s spokeswoman Katie McCormick Lelyveld said in a statement. "The first lady graciously invited Mrs. Obama, her mother and the girls to visit what will be their new home. Of course, Mrs. Obama greatly appreciated this invitation to provide an opportunity for the girls to feel at home and be comfortable in this transition process."

Meanwhile, the nation’s future president spent the day in Chicago, attending meetings at his transition headquarters along with Vice President-elect Joe Biden.

ABC News’ Jennifer Duck contributed to this report.

I don’t care much for George Bush, but Laura Bush has alway been a very gracious first lady.

We will miss Laura Bush when she has gone. She has acquitted herself well home and over-seas, all the time she has been in public eyes.

I would agree that both first ladies appear to be class acts.

Class act by Mrs. Bush. She’s really taken on a decent role of late. In fact, her upcoming book easily found many publishers bidding on it, while George’s isn’t finding many takers.
While GWB may not be remembered well and likely won’t do much post-POTUS, I can see Mrs. Bush staying quite active. I wish her well.

I am a big Obama supporter but I must agree that with everything going on in this country, I really don’t feel a need to keep up with where Obama’s daughters attend junior high school. I am so tired of hearing about this as well as the new puppy and what Michelle Obama is wearing on a daily basis. Get a life!!!

This is a desecration. This man was elected solely on the fact that he was a minority. “White Guilt” is what got him elected. It’s alright though. He’s gonna fall on his face and nearly bankrupt us just like Carter did. Now THAT’S change we can believe in. What a sham.

Why are the taxpayers footing the bill to have Michelle’s mother stay in the White House?

Why are the people who are so tired of hearing about the Obamas seek out news articles about them to leave a comment?
Don’t want to hear about them anymore stop watching the news period. People is going to talk about the Obama family for four years non-stop think Princess Diana level of obsession.
The Media will report of anything and everything about this family. After all they are new and different.

It didn’t take long for someone to jump in with a negative comment, we should have expected that. Anything to do with the new first family is going to be printed, get used to it.
Laura Bush was gracious to invite the Obamas. Good grief. Critics will have a long 8 years if they don’t get a grip.

WHAT IF:
Obama/Biden vs McCain/Palin, what if things were switched around?…..think about it.
Would the country’s collective point of view be different? Could racism be the culprit?
Ponder the following:
What if the Obamas had paraded five children across the stage, including a three month old infant and an unwed, pregnant teenage daughter?
What if John McCain was a former president of the Harvard Law Review?
What if Barack Obama finished fifth from the bottom of his graduating class?
What if McCain had only married once, and Obama was a divorcee?
What if Obama was the candidate who left his first wife after a severe disfiguring car accident, when she no longer measured up to his standards?
What if Obama had met his second wife in a bar and had a long affair while he was still married?
What if Michelle Obama was the wife who not only became addicted to pain killers but also acquired them illegally through her charitable organization?
What if Cindy McCain graduated from Harvard?
What if Obama had been a member of the Keating Five?
(The Keating Five were five United States Senators accused of corruption in 1989, igniting a major political scandal as part of the larger Savings and Loan crisis of the late 1980s and early 1990s.) What if McCain was a charismatic, eloquent speaker?
What if Obama couldn’t read from a teleprompter?
What if Obama was the one who had military experience that included discipline problems and a record of crashing seven planes?
What if Obama was the one who was known to display publicly, on many occasions, a serious anger management problem?
What if Michelle Obama’s family had made their money from beer distribution?
What if the Obama’s had adopted a white child?
You could easily add to this list. If these questions reflected reality, do you really believe the election numbers would be as close as they are?
This is what racism does. It covers up, rationalizes and minimizes positive qualities in one candidate and emphasizes negative qualities in another when there is a color difference.
Educational Background:

Obama’s mother-in-law, Mrs. Robinson has said that she’s not enthusiastic about living in the White House; she’d rather have her own home. However, if she does live there, I hardly think that she will cost taxpayers much money. Maybe a little extra electricity and hot water? One more place to be set at meals? She won’t be receiving a salary, after all, and no security coverage.
She would not, moreover, be the first mother-in-law to live in the White House. I believe that the mothers-in-law of both Truman and Eisenhower were in residence.

I voted for Mr. Obama, adn I for one like to hear what is going on with his family. I am sure other parents discuss this with their children, how these children will be moving and attending a new school. Some of us are interested, if you are not don’t read it.To me it is pleasent news, after all of the bad news that we hear daily, job loss, stock market down, so it is nice to hear
what two young girs are doing. I also agree that Laura Bush is a class act, and this was a nice thing for her to have Michele, her daughters and Mother to the White House.

I dislike George W. Bush and I lost almost all respect for him over the years, but he was/is our President. I didn’t and I don’t like Laura’s political positions nor her party – all that being said Laura Bush was a good First Lady. While she didn’t go too many extra miles either in social involvment or use her own office for relief of some of the world’s pain – she held her own – and being the wife of George Bush takes a whole lot of character and style and Laura Bush has it. I think Mrs. Obama also has character and style and so it probably is quite easy for them to communicate. Some of you also need to look into what Laura has been up to of late – looking for a home near a metro city in Texas (she doesn’t want to be stuck on the ranch) and assisting in the Presidential Library (of which she will of course hold a major role). Laura Bush is not one dimensional – the trouble (because of George led around by the nose by Cheney and the neo-cons) the full rainbow remained hidden. I sincerely hope she blossoms into another Texas rose once out of the White House – we need them.

Hey folks, please email or write your Senate and House Reps and request that they support the Loan to the Detroit Auto Makers. People, we’ve got to support American business (even if it is poorly run) or find ourselves without any viable manufacturing at all. Of course the Detroiters are gonna have to shape up or else, but hey…give them a loan to help ‘em out with the proviso that they clean up their act.
Without Detroit, Japan, Korea and Germany will take their businesses back to their own countries and stick it to our country big time.

I have respect for the current First Lady, it’s just George that I lost respect for. I think Laura likes Michelle and her daughters. She doesn’t care if Barack and Michelle are Democrats or not, it’s all a part of the transition process. There may be some things that they may disagree on, but that’s a fight that is over now. We need to move on with life, and forget about the division during the campaigning. I’m interested in knowing how Barack and Michelle’s daughters are taking the new life they have been given. This is something that these girls have not been through. I mean imagine being 7 years old, like Sasha, or 10 like Malia. Imagine your dad being famously elected President of the United States. Your life is now public. You will not have much privacy. It’s not easy to adjust to, especially with some hateful critics still out there. America has not seen children as young as Sasha and Malia in the White House since the Kennedy days. It’s interesting. I do hope that the publicity won’t go in the direction on this family like Princess Diana. That kind of media attention caused her tragic death. I don’t want a Camelot, or Kennedy era either..that lead to the President being assasinated. Let’s make this history memorable in good terms, not tragic terms.
I however have no idea what to think of Barack’s staff selections. I’ve never heard of any of these people he’s selecting! Good thing Hillary Clinton will possibly be Secretary of State. Lots of Clinton people coming in..looks like pure Democrat influence there. Not good for Repubs, but I don’t think Barack is leaving them out completely. Some might think so, but I think there’s more time to see what happens. I hope he reaches out to the right rather than stay on the left. But no one is in control of his priorities.
By the way, anyone still thinking Rahm Emanuel is a Muslim, you’re dead wrong. He’s JEWISH.

Obama will be one of the best presidents we have ever had..the Republicans will try to make it difficult for him but good always win over evil. I’m praying for you Barack Obama..you are a good man!

Aren’t you guys amazed at how cool Obama was during the primaries when all the nasty things were said about him(lies)..the man kept his cool! even during the debates when McSame keep hitting him with the Ayers lies and socialist lies..My man obama was cool as cucumber and level headed..now that is the kind of president we need for these times..he forgives(that’s biblical)..and he moves on..Obama is a good man and a real christian..quite unlike Jesse(the reverend)jackson..Puhleeze! and Al(reverend)Sharpton..Puhleeze again! Obama could teach these men a thing or two on how to be a true christian..Obama loves this country and he would work hard to turn things around..Hillary Clinton loves this country too and she is a team player..so if the Republicans don’t try to make it difficult for Obama we would see things turning around. God bless Barack Obama and God bless America!

I am asking what the limit is?! I don’t believe Michelle’s mother, or brother or sister or cousin or nephew, should be living in the White house with the Obamas. Blood wise, she is not any closer than Obama’s own aunt, who is living in a dump and facing deportation.
Tax payers’ money should support the First Family’s living expense, no matter how big that family is, but only to the direct family members. The American President is getting PAID, and should be able to afford to buy a house for a relative. Not everyone moves to the white house. NO!!!!!

Some people fail to realize that President-ELECT Obama didn’t just come out on his own for Pres. He was APPOINTED by the “DEMOCRATIC PARTY” and accepted. When the “DP” have faith in his ability to lead the country then, we should have faith in his abilities also since the country has been screaming negatives about the RP’s inability to run the country. On his wife and daughters: He is making HISTORY being a person of color as first President as well as the DP having the “first” African-American President. There is a lot of history however you view this. Being African-American, his wife, children, mother-in-law, any relatives, and future children (while in office)….are a part of that HISTORY. Whatever progress he makes it’s better than the last President. Failure? I seriously doubt because of his experience, education, intellect, values, principles, etc. (If)he fails his failure wouldn’t be as embarassing as the previous. THIS EVENT IS HISTORY!!! It’s done….you can’t change history.

How can Palin be VP, her 14yr old daughter expecting a child, represent a country when she can’t give proper direction, values, etc, to a child?????
How would th teens of the country react???? Teen baby boom? The VP’s daughter is pregnant so it’s alright?
Not good for Palin’ character. The RP didn’t know her daughter was pregnant until they appointed Palin. they RP probably threw in the towel for many reason’s associated w Palin. McCain got beaten w the same stick they’ve beat GWB with for years. Plus…the RP didn’t want 2 deal w the mess anymore, do you think???

Mrs. Robinson, Michelle’s Mother, WILL NOT be “LIVING” in the White House!!!! She didn’t live w her daughter-in-law and Barack before he became Pres nor will she live with them in Washington. However, she will remain close to/with her grandchildren and daughter/son-in-law. Who, by the way, will reside @ Pennsylvania Ave, Washington, DC, USA!!!!!!!!!! per CNN..the most trusted news in television

So often First Ladies are put in the background and forgotten. Just as her Mother-in-Law, Barbara, Laura Bush is a wonderful and gracious human being. I think her kindness in making the new First Family, the Obama’s, feel welcome is to be commended. The lives of these 2 little girls is going to change more than they can understand at their ages and Laura Bush is helping their transition.

IMO the Obamas will need to depend on Mrs Robinson as they will have many events they will have to attend and I don’t see Michell giving the care of their daughters to anyone else but her mother

The Bush family has been very gracious and Laura especially so.Laura showed her grace when she defended Michell about what you say while campaigning

“This comment section needs spell checking .. whenever you comment on this people just say “get over it – it was a typo” though! LOL! No it wasn’t! Yep – our school system will pass anyone … just read these posts!” — Frank
You are absolutely correct frank.
So, I take it that you don’t think we need anymore “Outcome Based Education” either

Eleonora27 said, “I hardly think that she (Michelle’s mother) will cost taxpayers much money. Maybe a little extra electricity and hot water? One more place to be set at meals? She won’t be receiving a salary, after all, and no security coverage”.
Why is it such a merit to not receive a salary and receive no security coverage? We are seriously talking about if it’s legal or the right protocol for a mother-in-law to move in to White House.
A little electricity and hot water? It goes to show you how low the public education has sunken to. No ability to reason, nothing intelligent coming out of someone who thought enough of herself to even post in a blog. It is a crying shame it’s people like that who elected a president who thought there were 57 states in the United States.

To Connie re Soft News: As long as humans are interested in other humans there will be gossip. If u r disgusted w/soft news, u have a choice. There is wealth of info on web, lots of intellegent discourse on policy from Left & Right thank tanks, from PBS, CSPAN, Fox News for Starters. What is your problem & what r u doing over here?
To Dr.342: Pretty hostile writing. May I remind u that Obama is 1st non-Caucasion President. U can’t blame past problems on him. Even if u did not vote for him, he is our President now and in these terrible times, let’s wish him & ourselves well. It’s sad to see this kind of immature bigotry still expressed.
Yes, Laura Bush is very gracious and I hope we continue to hear more from her after the White House. She is a very bright lady; I hope she continues her literacy efforts.
