Secretary of State Hillary Clinton? It’s Being Considered

ABC News’ Martha Raddatz, Jake Tapper and Z. Byron Wolf report: Sen. Hillary Clinton, who was President-elect Barack Obama’s leading rival for the Democratic presidential nomination, is being considered for the job of secretary of state in the Obama administration, sources with knowledge of the transition process tell ABC News.

Discussions about Clinton, D-N.Y., being asked to accept the post are "very serious," an Obama source says.

Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., has been considered a leading contender for the post. But last week, ABC News’ chief Washington correspondent George Stephanopoulos reported on "Good Morning America" that Clinton also was in the running to be Obama’s secretary of state pick.

Though Clinton and Obama ran a contentious primary campaign for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination, Sen. Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, both campaigned for Obama in the general election campaign against the Republican nominee, Sen. John McCain of Arizona.

Asked if Hillary Clinton would consider the secretary of state job, a former official in President Clinton’s administration said, "I think so. What would you rather do — be senator or secretary of state?"

Asked about the reports on the Cabinet post and another report that Hillary Clinton went to Obama’s home base of Chicago today, senior Hillary Clinton adviser Philippe Reines said, "Any speculation about cabinet or other administration appointments is really for President-elect Obama’s transition team to address."

Pushed on whether she physically went to Chicago, Reines said only that she had no public schedule today.

Please for God sakes, Hillary do not do it, do not leave your senate seat, obama will eventually toss you under the bus to save himself and force you out of his administration and you would be done politically. Please don’t do it, let one of his henchmen take the job let them go down with him.

I couldn’t agree more!!! Hillary for Secretary of State!!! In my mind there isn’t anyone else who would be better than her for that job! Plus I’m pretty confident in her contacts and temperament would be ideal in handling our global status :) Wish her all the best! :)

Hillary’s a big girl now and a smart one at that. She will know exactly what to do. Don’t worry that anyone will brush her aside and destroy her politically. In my opinion that would be impossible. Take the job. Obama and America needs you, Now.

I don’t know if it would be wise for Hillary to leave the Senate. She can do so much good there. What would she do when the Obama administration is over. Well I guess she could run for pres again. Maybe it will be Hillary against Palin next time.

Once again, Obama proves his leadership by surrounding himself with strong leaders.
This is going to be the most competent and accomplished presidential cabinets in our nation’s history.

Posted by: clifton | November 13, 2008, 5:10 pm 5:10 pm

I hope she can be SoS, because she’s definitely qualified and highly intelligent. She knows world leaders and can keep America safe because she’s tough.
However, I doubt the truth of this story because there are too many Senate seats being vacated. Illinois, Delaware, Alaska doesn’t have a senator yet etc.

Posted by: Kel | November 13, 2008, 5:12 pm 5:12 pm

Apparently many of both Obama and Hillary supporters oppose this.
If I did not detest Hillary, I would have supported her in the first place over Obama.
Given we had only two choices (Obama or McCain), I’m glad we got Obama. But those remarks about Obama being a socialist or such are uteerly ridiculous. His principal drawback is that on issues he is not much different from others like Hillary and McCain.

Posted by: bugg | November 13, 2008, 5:14 pm 5:14 pm

Hillary would be of more use in the Senate. She is singular. We have several who could pick up State and run with it, but there is only one Hillary in the Senate.

Hillary would become a scapegoat for obama and his kool-aid drinking bot society, they will not hold him accountable, so they will need someone to blame, under the bus you would go, hold out for Gov of NY govenors have an opportunity to make a direct difference in the lives of their constituants, obama would suck all of the knowledge out of you and then toss you under the bus along with his rabid supporters. Just say no!!

Posted by: meibo | November 13, 2008, 5:19 pm 5:19 pm

And, ladies and gentlemen, it IS politics as usual, goodbye to “it is time for a change”. Sounds like a bit of arm twisting on the Clinton’s part as payback for supporting him, but of course they have never done that before!
It was mentioned in the post election insider reporting issue of Newsweek that there was disappointment in the fact that Hilary turned out to be a rather
mediocre leader during her failed campaign..not good for a presidential candidate, and probably not for a Secretary of State either.
So, lets spread the Clintonista poison in this new world of change.

Hillary Clinton will make an excellent Secretary of State because like Obama she is bright, articulate, astute and is seeking the best for America. Excellent choice! Hope he chooses her.

Barack Obama will be the best president that America has ever had and Hillary Clinton will be the best Secretary of State..because they sincerely want to make a difference to the lives of all Americans, quite unlike the Republicans who are only concerned about the rich

Posted by: Stanley | November 13, 2008, 5:22 pm 5:22 pm

Apparently Obama is about the same old same old, not change. But if he doesn’t bring the country to the brink of disaster, he still will have been the better choice. Nothing good, just not a disaster.

Posted by: Mary | November 13, 2008, 5:24 pm 5:24 pm

Hillary won the primary and she should’ve been in the WH. I still believe that hussien obama , who is not a US citizen, should step down and let the real winner of the election, Hillary Clinton, to be our next President. Obama can spent the rest of his life in fedral prison for liying to American people.

Posted by: nancy | November 13, 2008, 5:26 pm 5:26 pm

It depends if she wants to be a second fiddle to Obama, or run again in 2012. That depends again on her estimate of where Obama will be politically in 4 years.

Secretary of State. No problem. She can handle sniper fire (which is almost anywhere in the middle east) and can walk through the streets of Baghdad in her bullet proof pant suits or make a dash to the car from her flight landing in Kabul. She will obliterate Iran if it prepares to launch a scud and she can probably complete the Obama application without any baggage that has not been previously rummaged through. My personal preference would be Hillary as the secretary of Health and human services and making the universal health care happen for a change.

Posted by: gjkotw01 | November 13, 2008, 5:33 pm 5:33 pm

Not only would she be an excellent choice but she would bring in the rest of the true female Democrats into the fold. It was the younger voters who overwhelmingly voted Obama and in 4 to 8 years we will have another crop of young people voting Democrat, plus the older voters, over 65, who voted McCain will be dying off. The Republicans will never again get the minority black or hispanic vote as long as they cowtow to the white supremist groups. In my opinion, the Democrats will rule for at least the next 16 years barring a real catastrophe and until the Republicans can get their act together will either die off or will have to form a new party that aligns itself with the independents.

Posted by: steve | November 13, 2008, 5:33 pm 5:33 pm

Posted by: Cindy | November 13, 2008, 5:33 pm 5:33 pm

I think that she would make an excellent SOS, however I would not touch any administration ( Obama or McCain) at this point in time…those of you who mention the Bus- how so true. The problem is that Obama made so many promises to the radical side of his party that his own party will throw him under a bus when they realize that he not fulfill their bidding or follow through on his promises he made to those who supported them. Hillary—-PLEASE!!! I would stay way far away…let Kerry get run over by the Obama political machine- Kerry would be perfect as a scape goat/// just as empty as the shirt he would be serving…oh Theresa would skin me for that.

I prefer Hillary for Secretary of State any day than John Kerry.
John Kerry is way too boring.
This says to me that Obama plans to spend A LOT of time focuses on domestic issues and thus would have to have an extremely strong Secretary of State.
I think that Hillary would be brilliant at this job.

As SoS, perhaps she can support the invasion of another country that has done nothing to us.
So much for holding politicans accountable for their actions. But then most voters never do. It’s all a popularity contest.

Clinton has established herself as a strong, effective senator. She can do far more good remaining in the Senate for a couple more decades than as Secretary of State for 4-8 years. She’s not suited to or trained for the State appointment, and I’d be very surprised to see her take it.

The Clintons are masters of political calculus. If Hillary stays in the Senate, she could run in 2012 if Obama fumbles. If he is re-elected, she waits until 2016. If she is in the Obama administration and he fumbles, a chance in 2012 is not so good, she’s part of the fumble. If he doesn’t, it’s 2016 again anyway. It will be interesting to see what she does.

Posted by: garand911 | November 13, 2008, 5:48 pm 5:48 pm

Excuse me, lynne, but what are all these “promises” that Obama made to the “radical” side of his party? Please list them, since you seem to have been in on the discussions. Health care? I don’t consider that a radical issue, since it’s been discussed in this country for over 60 years. Harry Truman wanted a national health care program as far back as 1945. Taxes on the wealthy? Also nothing new. “Redistribution” of wealth? I hate to tell to tell you this, but that is what taxes are all about, redistributing wealth. “Socialism”? Gee, are you not aware that we already have soft-socialist programs of the type found in Europe: they are called Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, Unemployment Compensation, and a variety of programs for special-needs and disabled children and adults.
So, what is all this “radicalism”?

Posted by: Eleonora27 | November 13, 2008, 5:48 pm 5:48 pm

No, NO, and OH H#** NO!!! This is yet another Clinton ploy – the leak, her answer “possibly”, you name it – so she can sabotage the Obama administration for her effort to run in 2012. Remember, she tried to run her ticket on “experience”, with Secretary of of State, she’ll use it – to no end. Further, she’s always been profoundly self-serving at all costs. Think she’s turned a new leaf? Riiight. Obama, paleeeeese, don’t fall for this. Go bi-partisan. Go CHUCK HAGEL! Offer Hillary the Supreme Court where they can hold her accountable for integrity.

Posted by: primarywatcher | November 13, 2008, 5:50 pm 5:50 pm

Considering that we continue to live in a dangerous world and will continue to do so even after the Inauguration next year, having Hillary Clinton as SOS would definitely put my mind at ease.
On national security and foreign policy, Obama, for this voter, was always a distant third behind Hillary and McCain (who are probably equally able on those issues).
If offered would she accept? Difficult to say. Do not think for one second she has given up on being President Clinton. With Obama in all likelihood the Dem candidate in 2012, her chance may have come and gone by 2016 (remember all that nonsense about McCain’s age?).
If offered, I HOPE that she would put aside any personal grievances or ambitions and think of our nation’s security: We really really need someone who is competent and experienced in this area and honestly, so far all Obama has done on security/foreign policy is talk.
Once he has done something (anything?), I may have more confidence in him.

Very true. The oldest justices, thus the ones most likely to retire, are “liberals”.
On the conservative side the justice with the longest tenure so far is Scalia.
I don’t really count Kennedy as either given that he has sort of replaced O’Connor as the swing vote. If HE retires that could shift the balance.
However, there are MANY vacancies at the lower federal court levels. That’s where the “change” comes.

“but look back over the past couple administrations, the women have been the backbone, they have been the ones going overseas and negotiating,”
—————————————
Actually as SoS it has been split evenly b/t men and women. And overseas negotiating in general, it has been mostly men.
But that is irrelevant. Gender has nothing to do with skill in negotiating.

No, I don’t think that its a good ideal for Hilary to be the Secretary of State.I don’t much have respect for Bill when he had his Love Affair when he was in office..It would be a repeat all over again only this time we won’t know who the other women would be yet..

I am a little disapointed, I mean so far the template that is being built is based on the old, the old used Rahm who had his go at it in the Clinton administration, I thought this was going to be change not a throwback, we have all of the same players affiliated in some way with the impeached Clinton from 9 years ago, please President Obama, start tapping into the talent of tomorrow and the powermovers of the NOW, Hillary and the Clintons made me lose a great deal of respect, however, they seemed to patch things up but I would not have her in my cabinet or adminstration if he knows what is right for him, loyalty is the most important asset or your team, she has shown the cards of being able to cast a spear into his back and not bat an eye.

Yeah the Clintons were bad for this country ? WHAT ? Lets see when bill was in office , unemployment was low . The economy was great , we weren’t at war. The country had 5.7 trillion to the good! Now bush has us at 12-13 trillion in the hole and counting

I am so pleased that Barack Obama is our new President Elect with Biden as VP at his side. H. Clinton would make an excellent SOS. She is well versed in foreign affairs. She shows strength with the willingness to communicate. She is discreet and knows many heads of state in other countries on a first name basis. She is more then qualified.

Posted by: Von | November 13, 2008, 7:02 pm 7:02 pm

It’s not about politics, its about selecting the best possible person for a very important position in the new administration. Senator Clinton would be an excellent choice. She’s already known world-wide and her husband is still highly respected globally. Brilliant move, Obama.

No wonder this country has so many problems. People of both parties don’t want responsible government. They just want the other party’s people to be responsible.

I think that would be a great thing for hillary, & would even improve her already well qualified resume for the 2012 election. I voted for hillary in the primary, but i think barrak will do an amazing job. he thinks with his heart, soul and mind. he’s compassionate, and wants the best for his country and fellow americans. and you can bet he will not let you down. I don’t believe he has had the easiest or wealthiest life. but he is rich with ideas, ambition, persiverence, and a drive our country needs. and he conveys just with his almost lyrical speaking abilities.

Love Obama with all my heart! When he said change, he meant change! He wanted Hillary in, because he must have seen her in a different light than she has been in 20 years. Same rule applies to Joe Biden and Rahm Emanuel! TherMessiah is here and now. Why are we questioning him? We are not worthy! He wants to use old Washington people to change the old Washington, who are we to question him? Don’t you know we are not allowed to question GOD?

Everyone:
This could be Obama’s ticket to greatness. Granted he is the first African-American president, but imagine your children reading about America in the early-21st Century. Bush destroys the credibility of the US. The “War in Iraq” becomes the new Vietnam. The Global Economy collapses. In comes “The Obama Era” with Hillary as his Secretary of State. (Oh, I’m crying just thinking about it.)

Let me make a few important points before I retire for the evening, kids. Obama is unqualified. He is inexperienced and unvetted, exactly as Hillary charged. I am not a Hillary fan but what she alleged about him is true. It’s ignorant people like EastCoast that elected a president who went back on his words and used 8 times of TV time to defeat another candidate, McCain who abided by McCain’s campaign promise.
My heart goes out to EastCoast worshipers and the like. Obama will fall flat on his face, and so will you. He lies and lies, and you believe and believe. You deserve each other but we as a country will suffer together. I am looking forward to 4 years from now to have a real election, not someone who tries to buy an election, again.

Hillary should stay in the senate where she can have a long career. No one ends up liking the secretary of state when they’re finished, so she’d do better for herself to stay on as a senator. Maybe she can be Supreme Court justice later on. She deserves better than a job who serves at the whim of the president. Give it to Richardson, he’s actively campaigned for it.

Look at the people that went out on a limb for him. Bill Richardsn called a Traitor, and others. This is change we can believe in. Hillary Clinton has and always will be JUST FOR HILLARY. He is making a big mistake and will not get our votes again in 2012. You ran on something that you had no intention of keeping. Change, what change.

It appears we will get 28 years of a Bilderberg secret society after all. We won’t be getting any “real” change, just another incumbent(senator). “Under sniper fire” Both of the Bush’s belonged ,both of the Clintons are active particapents. It’s kind of a millionaire & billionaires secret club, that promotes ideas like,Nafta free trade, outsourcing & the latest globalization. I guess McCain or Obama would both have been obligated to the elitists since they accepted so much campaign contributions from them. Hey Hillary , what do you think about reinstating the Glass – Stegal act your hubby removed in 1999. The act-law put in to stop commercial banks from becoming “crooked” Wallstreet investment banks. How come this law wasn’t reinstated before we decided to bail out investment bankers. How come we still face credit default swaps. How come nobody has been held accountable in courts of law? More Icing on the cake of the rich buddy fail safe system! These idiots are so full of themselves , they refuse to address any real issues. Bush did the same thing…nothing ..absolutely nothing about rich people pillaging! Is Richard Fuld a member?

When people get hung up on the “change” part of the administration….we already have started the change….we got rid of the republicans…that’s a change after 8 yrs of a failed administration. As for Hillary and the Clinton people…they are also change in that they ran a good administration and we want to change back when we had a surplus not a deficit.

If the old Clinton administration will be working with the new President, here are some facts about the next President’s tax plan that they will face.
According to the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center, “without substantial cuts in government spending” Obama’s plan – and McCain’s, too – “would substantially increase the national debt over the next ten years.” Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor told FactCheck.org that the Tax Policy Center’s analysis “fails to take in account Senator Obama’s spending cuts, including ending the Iraq war.” That’s true, but Obama’s proposed cuts are dwarfed by the Tax Policy Center’s projected deficits. Obama’s new spending programs might be completely offset by new revenue and spending cuts. But overall spending will still exceed overall revenue, and the nation would face at least 10 more years of annual deficits.
Get your wallets ready to pay more taxes. You can thank the voters.

Unlike Sarah Palin, Hillary Clinton is a very smart lady and would make a great Secretary of State. Ladies if you want a female that represents your gender in a spectacular fashion Hillary is your lady not that airhead Sarah Palin. I had hoped to see Hillary take on the job of reforming the health care system and I am sure that job is on the table for her. I was torn in the primaries as to whether to vote for Hillary or Barack but in the end, and this is to take nothing from Hillary, I felt Barack would make a better world leader. I think it is great that the republican party thinks Palin is their salvation, if she runs in 2012 the election should be an absolute landslide for the democrats.

Posted by: Kurt | November 14, 2008, 12:13 pm 12:13 pm

Hillary will not take the SOS job because she still wants to be President one day. A lot of men don’t like Hillary. A lot of men say they don’t want to vote for Hillary–even Democratic men. The new L.A. Times/Bloomberg poll, released Dec. 28, shows that only 19 per cent of Democratic men favor Clinton in upcoming caucuses and primaries – less than one in five. The implications for Hillary are ominous: since she can’t expect Republican men to vote for her, how can she win the election? Say good by to Hillary. No SOS and certainly no more for President. She will be about 70 years old then and can you imagine what she will look like then. Poor Bill. Maybe Monica can run in 2012. She has the experience at the oval office.

Posted by: Justin | November 20, 2008, 5:21 am 5:21 am

Barack Obama’s decision to name Hillary Clinton the Secretary of State post could well turn out to be his first major blunder, for these obvious reasons:
First, there’s the inseparable bond with her husband Bill. Given the duo’s unquenchable thirst for power, they would not be content to play second fiddle. From day one they would be scheming to usurp control of the White House. Once they get a foothold, Obama would be hard-pressed to rein them in.
Then, there’s the Clintons’ long history of corruption, deception and sleaze—Whitewatergate, Pardongate, Cattle-futuresgate, Chinagate, Filegate, Fellatiogate, the using of uniformed marines as waiters, the plundering of White House property, the Impeachment and near conviction, the punitive IRS audits, the violent deaths of potentially incriminating witness. This alone would provide Obama’s enemies with all the grime they needed to smear his presidency.
Consider further that unlike a Condoleezza Rice or a Madelaine Albright—not to mention bona fide statesmen like Henry Kissinger, Dean Rusk and John Foster Dulles–Hillary Clinton lacks the educational and cultural gravitas to represent our nation abroad. Her lawyering in Arkansas and stint in Congress doesn’t quite cut it. She did get 18 million votes in the Democratic primaries, probably more than Obama, but a large proportion of those votes were cast by diehard feminists and the less educated, hardly the constituency whose support lends credibility to a Secretary of State.
Barack Obama should recall the reasons why he didn’t choose Hillary as his VP running mate. For his and the nation’s sake, let us hope that she changes her mind and spurns the Secretary of State offer. Her coyness in reaching her decision–making Obama beg, in effect–is already an ominous sign.
