Upset Over Sarah Palin’s Turkey Video
ABC’s Lisa Stark from Washington: Alaska Governor Sarah Palin’s botched pardon of a Thanksgiving turkey, has now caught the attention of an animal rights group. Let’s be fair, Palin, the former Republican Vice Presidential nominee, did successfully pardon a Thanksgiving turkey at a farm in Wasilla, Alaska. The problem was what came next. Palin stopped to talk to the media after saving the turkey’s life — but the interview was conducted right in front of the slaughterhouse. So as Palin talked, a worker appeared to be slaughtering turkeys in the background. Circulated across the internet, the video has prompted groans, sighs and chuckles. But it also provided an opening for one animal rights group to push it agenda. In a press release today, Farm Sanctuary is pointing out that "more than 45 million turkeys suffer this very same fate for Thanksgiving every year." The group’s national shelter director, Susie Coston, said in a statement, "The interview should be an eye opener for the millions of Americans who celebrate Thanksgiving." It noted the group has been rescuing turkeys for more than 23 years, and finds them to be social, sensitive creatures. Farm Sanctuary is using the moment to urge Americans to give up the bird, and celebrate a vegetarian Thanksgiving. No word on what Palin, who is an avid hunter, will have on her holiday table.

She is not the first turkey killer I know.

God ordered us to eat animals as the Bible says.
So leave Sarah alone.

There has got to be a faster way to kill a turkey! That guy took forever! I don’t know what was worse, listening to Palin go on like the idiot that she is (turkeys are smarter) or watching that poor turkey die a very slow death.

What an absolute imbecile she is to be interviewed in front of the slaughter of a turkey just after the pardon of another. I was horrified once I realized what was going on behind her.
Media – please stop providing air-time for this air-head.

If you listen to the entire interview – I saw it on MSNBC last night – the reporter asks her what her family Thanksgiving dinner will look like, and she says they’ll have turkey. Also, the reporter DID ask Gov. Palin if she knew they’d be doing the interview in front of the slaughter tables, and she said, “No worries!” This woman is an absolute IDIOT. No one in their right mind would have done an interview while someone in the background slaughters an animal. I’m not one of the anti-turkey people, but jeez, this interview was horrendous from start to finish!

Doesn’t bother a farm gal like Palin or any other farm folk. Only naive city people who think turkeys come from a supermarket might be disturbed. Get real on real life. Our life depends on the death of some living creature. Even that salad or raw apple has living cells that are killed in our stomachs.

I defer to no one in despising Sarah Palin for myriad reasons.
But maybe the woman simply isn’t squeamish and hypocritical about eating meat — and doesn’t care about the tender feelings of people who are.
I’m an omnivore, but I respect many of the animal-rights, anti-meat folks because they live by their principles. The hunters and farmers I know are upfront about killing animals for food and are willing to do the dirty work themselves. I can respect that, too.
The people I can’t respect are those who criticize hunters and farmers for killing animals but then eat meat and wear leather. And who try to pretend that their desire to eat meat doesn’t require the killing and dismemberment of animals.

Who cares about a turkey being killed, but to hold an interview in front of the slaughter of turkey’s just shows Palin’s lack of intelligence.
She even mentions the possibility of criticism, what a total “Maroon”.

I’m all for animal rights. I believe strongly that animals should not be abused, etc., BUT Turkeys are farmed to be used as food, not just for Thanksgiving (think sandwiches at your local deli). If the activists want change, they’ll have to think about more than just this one Holiday.
While the video was poorly thought out, I can’t buy into “saving the turkeys”. It’s one tradition that I hope they don’t tamper with.
Posted by: HeidiL | November 21, 2008, 7:20 pm 7:20 pm
I just bet the media set it up to stop her at that particular point on the farm. Why not just shoot a close up. They wanted the back drop of the slaughtering. As far as killing the turkeys, what’s the big deal. That’s why we breed them. The activist need to get a life! Imagine showing up in the homeless shelter on Thanksgiving and giving those poor people a few carrots! It’s so ridiculous.

I am from a hunting background. It was drilled into me to respect animals & that hunters should make a “clean kill”–not make the animal suffer at all.
That bird behind Palin died a slow death. Palin is disgusting in that she doesn’t care how an animal suffers or who sees it suffering. I find her a disgusting, moronic person– whether she’s Republican or Democrat doesn’t matter.

Yes I eat turkey, but come on here! Do you really need the kiddies watching that at age 5? Maybe it’s normal in Alaska or on the farm, but try explaining it to some New York tot. It’s just one more instance of insensitive, imbecilic behavior from a half-rate politician without the sense to consign herself to the dustbin of history where she belongs. Now I have to go calm down my visiting 4 year old niece after she peeked onto the computer the older kids were watching that mess on. Thanks a lot Sarah

Well, this video in question is a typically Palin distasteful farce.
But I want to correct a serious misunderstanding expressed in a post by theforse. That One does not support late term abortion. This mistaken notion morphed from the fact that he voted against a certain proposed law against it, because it was redundant of laws already in effect.

What’s wrong with a 5 year old seeing where their food comes from. Parents let their kids watch TV where people are killed every day but let them see a real turkey being killed for Thanksgiving and they get upset. Grow up. I eat meat and so does millions of people and if they can’t watch a turkey being killed they should become a vegetarian.

If you’re a person who doesn’t “eat anything with a face,” then go ahead and be horrified. Everyone knows that pardoning the turkey is a fun tradition that is meaningless, since most of the nation chows down on turkey every November.
As a fan of the movie Fargo, I love the fact that Palin, who has already been compared to that movie’s hero cop Marge Gunderson (Frances McDormand)is now in front of a turkey grinder while a Fargo like worker does the wood-chipper scene!
Go Marge! Go Palin!

Posted by: I like turkey - on my plate. | November 21, 2008, 9:09 pm 9:09 pm
I’m a 32-year vegetarian. God didn’t tell me to eat anything in particular. The Bible however tells Christians, Jews and Muslims not to eat pork, shellfish, etc.
I went to the Creation “Museum” in Petersburg three years ago on a Sunday. The cafeteria menu has cute Biblical names for their pork dishes. They won’t let anyone work there who thinks the world is over 4,000 years old but they’re open for business on “the Lord’s Day” and serve “forbidden” food.
I don’t care what people eat; it’s their business. I don’t even care if they don’t realize their veal came from a young calf that was kept in a tiny pen for it’s whole life, or that their eggs come from hens that are kept in tiny cages for their whole lives with the lights on 24/7. I don’t care if they don’t know that the beef they eat has been fed droppings from those same chickens. I hope they realize that factory farms contribute heavily to global warming and water shortages.
The point of this AP story, however, is that it reinforces the fact that Sarah Palin is a clueless idiot.
Posted by: Frank | November 21, 2008, 11:57 pm 11:57 pm
Just my two cents… Has anyone ever considered that the guy in the background who put the turkey in the barrel is an idiot? Think about it..and watch the clip again. As many times as he looked back at the camera during the interview, he knew exactly what he was doing–he knew he was being filmed. It doesn’t appear Sarah knew that was going on because he appeared “after” the interview started and she didn’t look back. Cut her some slack, for goodness sake. Perhaps this guy did it to get some noteriety or stir up the pot some more…who knows? ..hmmm…I wonder. Honestly, if he had any sense whatsoever, he would have waited after the interview to kill the bird–if it ever died. That part is never shown.
Posted by: Kathy | November 22, 2008, 1:48 am 1:48 am
Kathy, take another look at that clip. As she said, “This was – this was neat,” she turned to her left and should have been able to see the worker. Later she said, “Certainly we’ll probably invite criticism for even doin’ this too, but at least this was fun.” No one would criticize her for pardoning a turkey but they might very well criticize her for enjoying a slaughter. Remember how she giggled with delight during the prank call when the phony Sarkozy said it was fun taking away life? Think about it.
Posted by: WWW | November 22, 2008, 2:30 am 2:30 am
Hey, Frank! Maybe you should have read the other comments.. Palin was asked BEFORE the interview about the location, and at the end, she DID look to her left before she made a comment about probably taking criticism for ‘this’ too. She knew what she was doing. She’s a farm girl, a hunter. She’s not being duped, tricked, and the worker at the farm wasn’t in some kind of conspiracy.
It’s a matter of whether or not she used good judgment or whether choosing to do the interview during the ongoing slaughter was showing sensitivity.
And I agree, the worker didn’t show much intelligence in not waiting for the interview before going back to work.
This IS the reality of eating turkey – they get slaughtered.
Posted by: MM | November 22, 2008, 3:07 am 3:07 am
Sarah is not stupid, she’s just not a wrapped in cotton and coddled city girl. She’s seen food before it’s wrapped on foam in the supermarket freezer section.
If there’s an idiot in the video it’s the farm worker: I suspect the turkey’s demise was drawn out because he was too busy looking back at the camera.
This in no way will dampen my enjoyment of making this Thanksgiving’s feast.
On the whole, I found it darkly humorous.

Palin is a train wreck that just won’t stop and thank God for that! I googled Palin + turkey and got 0ver 3,290,000 sites and trust me it wasn’t the publicity she’s seeking.
It’s difficult to believe that she has any advisors whatsoever because the least astute of professional media handlers woulda nixed this in the bud. She’s probably got someone else from her Wasilla High coterie advising her. While most governors who even “pardoned” a turkey just issued a press release, Palin sees this as a camera opportunity but doesn’t even have the foresight to have the lucky tom turkey bathed so she wouldn’t soil her designer duds. And then the irony of pardoning one bird while the slaughter goes on in the background is lost only on her base of rabid supporters. I laughed out loud when she said “We’re probably going to get criticized even for this.” Well, yeah, um… DUUUH!
I trust that Palin had the option to reshoot the interview had she had the slightest foresight to do so. Any time constraints that she was under had to be entirely self-imposed.
Thank you Sarah, this one was priceless. Get more air time, PULEEZE! BTW, growing up in north Ga, I’ve hunted often and slaughtered animals myself but, BUT, we controlled the environment and access to the goings on to those who might have found it offensive. It’s painfully obvious that Palin is obliviously and idiotically insensitive to the public sentiment she so desperately courts.

Get a life . . . those that don’t like to see Turkeys slaughtered for the Dinner table are most likely “pro-choice”. Hypocrites! An innocent child of your own kind is of infinitely greater value than a stupid turkey. The methods by which innocent children are dispatched are far more gruesome and ‘inhumane’ than the quick beheading on the turkeys in the video. To ‘slaughter’ a child (who is undeserving of death)by sucking its brains out, dismembering it or burning it to death with a saline solution is simply evil.

Try watching the COMPLETE clip available at other news sites. The ‘handler’ is already conducting a slaughter as the interview begins. When the turkey has met his maker, the ‘handler’ takes the lifeless carcass out of camera range. That’s where the SHORT video clip begins. The ‘handler’ then returns with a second turkey and does his dirty work again.
Richard, your conspiracy theory is nothing but turkey droppings.

The video clip available here is EDITED. The full video shows TWO turkeys. Turkey #1 is already in the death apparatus as the interview begins. Midway through the interview when turkey #1 is dead, the worker walks off camera with the dead carcass, then returns with live turkey #2. The worker stuffs turkey #2 into the death apparatus and apparently cuts its throat. Turkey #2 kicks and struggles for the rest of the interview and is still alive at the end of filming.

I’m sorry, but someone should be fired over the Palin turkey interview.
It seems that everyone out there is reacting as though something was wrong with Sarah for not having eyes in the back of her head. In fact, there was something wrong with the producer and the camera operator. I am an amateur photographer, and I know that your picture is only as good as your background. It’s like hunting… you alway need to be aware of what’s behind your target. This is Photography 101, and even I could have made Sarah look better than this.
But the producer is even more culpable. At least the camera operator managed to get the picture. The producer made Sarah look like a complete buffoon. This is clearly a case of media incompetence, or worse, yet another instance where the media has maliciously tried to make Sarah look incompetent.
It did not work on me. I know Sarah, and I also know how it works on the “safe” side of the camera. The videographer and the producer should not be so safe. KTUU should fire someone, or apologize, or both.
Posted by: Gracen | November 22, 2008, 11:46 pm 11:46 pm
For all you people blaming KTUU, I think Palin should take some responsibility for this media botchup. After all, she was a JOURNALISM MAJOR.
In a follow-up story by The Alaska Daily News, Palin denied she knew what was going on behind her. But it’s so obvious that she turned around at some point and looked back. Unless she was blind and deaf, she should have been aware of that blood draining scene just a few feet from her. Typical of Palin, blame the media and accept no responsibility.
The point is not turkey-eating hypocrisy, the point is Palin’s incredibly poor judgment in allowing herself to be framed in front of that killing scene, when she’s trying to pardon a turkey!
I’m no journalism major but even I know what kind of reaction that would illicit from shocked parents and animal lovers all across America.

You people all just look for reasons to bash Palin! What about Obama wants to spend OUR tax dollars to tear out the bowling alley at the Whitehouse so he can build a basket ball court?? Sara pardons a turkey, and the bleeding heart tree huggers still chastise her because the other ones died! I didn’t hear a peep when they used govt money to “ship” turkeys to Washington DC so Bush could pardon them! GET A LIFE LOSERS!

Yes, we know that the meat we buy at the store is not magically produced by the meat fairy. The point people are trying to make is that this dim-witted woman(Palin)was a candidate for VP,and possibly the Presidency. What this video shows is reinforcement of all the ineptness she displayed during the campaign. She continues to demonstrate a lack of political acumen, and plain old common sense that is startling. If she is the future hope of the GOP, someone had better wake up and see what
they are dealing with. The previous post that said, “If God didn’t want us to eat animals….then why did he make them out of meat?” BRILLIANT!!! This had to have been written by Sarah.
Oh my,oh my.

Lets get something straight here. People who belong to PETA , or live in the city, or are vegetarians are NOT losers or idiots. I am still unsure why the posts are attacking anyone except the two jerks in this video.
1. This has NOTHING to do with Barack Obama, so lets stop bringing him into this.
2. Eating meat is fine, torturing a helpless animal and prolonging its death experience all for the sake of a local news spot is not fine. It is torture and I’m sure all you religious folk would agree that god did not say eat the animals and please let them die a slow torturous death.
3. Just because we live in a city and not on a hick farm, does not mean we are unaware of where our meat comes from. In fact we are hyperaware of where it comes from. City folk know all too well about factory farming, torture, and sickness that infests these holes that the country folk like to call clean natural “act of god farming.”
So lets stop pretending that this is another way to put down the Alaska governor. She needs no help from a turkey slaughterer to expose her lack of judgement or sensitivity. Shame on you Mrs. Palin!!

First of all, turkeys are killed in a very horrible way. They, along with chickens, are put on conveyor belts that chop their heads off. It doesn’t matter what the bible says- who says that the bible is right? And who cares what it says is right? If people have to eat meat, the animals could at least be treated correctly and humanely before they’re killed. Most animals are in factory farms their whole lives, never even seeing the light of day or feeling the warm sun on their backs. I am a vegetarian who DOES NOT wear any animal products, like leather, suede, etc. Animals deserve their rights just as people do. People should not be superior to non-human animals. Just because they can’t speak to us doesn’t make them inferior.

The cameraman should have said, ‘Wait. a moment, please.” Moved to an angle that had a less distracting background, and re-started the interview. Instead, he framed the shot deliberately to create a stir.
As to the slaughter of turkeys on camera – I happen a to a vegetarian, but I don’t find the video offensive or shocking – it’s just reality. If there’s a meat on your dinner table, that’s how it got there – no big secret.
