You Can Afford To Drive Home…
…for Thanksgiving, says our business editor Dan Arnall, "assuming you still own a car, or a home. The government’s weekly report on retail gas prices is just in, and it shows that the average gallon of regular unleaded is now going for $1.89. This marks the 10th week where prices have fallen and the first week since March 2005 that prices have been below $2 a gallon. Prices haven’t been lower since the week of January 24, 2005. The record high for gas prices was $4.11 during the week of July 7. Since then we’ve seen prices drop $2.22 or 54%. This week’s average price is 39% below the price a year ago ($3.10).

We need to decide whether to plan for higher prices or depend on the kindness of Hugo Chavez and friends. If we want to defend our country, we have to:
1) Eliminate the SUV exception to MPG requirements;
2) Set up regular increases in the MPG requirements;
3) Encourage the public to do the right thing for the country with a combination of fossil fuel consumption taxes and tax breaks for buying a non-fossil fuel vehicles;
4) Eliminate the subsidy for corn based ethanol. Making ethanol from corn requires more fossil fuel than it replaces!
