Closing Arguments: Topless Obama Pic

Pictures of a bare-chested Barack Obama and his family in swimsuits were splashed across the Internet this afternoon — after a paparazzo on the beach snapped the future first family during their Hawaiian vacation.

So tonight, we ask you: In this age of celebrity shutterbugs, can the Obamas really expect any privacy?

Or is the future first family — even the children — fair game?

Tell us what you think.

NO, they should not be fair game. They are entitled to a private life. What they choose to do, is their personnal business. Not ours! If the story has to do with our Future President’s work, then Yes, but otherwise. Leave them alone. And God Bless our President elect and his family.

I believe that the President-Elect and his family should have their privacy. While the Prsident-elect is on vacation, it is his business and he should not be photographed in this manner. If he wants the world to see him, then he can release his personal pictures. These pictures have nothing to do with his professional life and frankly the photographs are intrusive into his personal life. Everyone is entitled to a personal life. Frankly we have gone way too far in involving ourselves in the personal lives of all celebrities.

Where are the pics?

I got censored…”We’re sorry, your comment has not been published because TypePad’s antispam filter has flagged it as potential comment spam. It has been held for review by the blog’s author.” It wasn’t spam. Bogus.

No, leave them alone. They are public officials in theif professional life, but their personal life should be private.

I say leave our President and his family alone in their private space. Stop the photographer harrassment. Give personal space.

I do not feel that the Obama children are fair game for the media. They should not be hounded just because their father is our future president. Past presidential children were declared off limits so why shouldn’t the Obama girls be left alone to have as normal of a childhood as they possibly can have.

everybody has the right to a personal life. i suspect the reason that many decent, qualified people don’t go into public life is because they are unwilling to have every move that they or their family make open to the sort of public scrutiny that we as a society subject them to.

I think the secret service is not doing it’s job. What if that camera guy had something els besides a camera? They want privacy, better hire better secret service agents.

This is going to come down to a simple matter of security; if they are in camera range, they are in sniper range. A first year soldier learns that.

Every job has its benefits and draw backs. He chose to work for the people! He is not special. They are all fair game. Just like Hollywood.

Where was his CIA gards during this time of the snap shot of him? and if some one can get that close to him to get a snap shot photo like that what is stoping some one from shooting him it just go’s to show you a person is not safe no where in this day and time……

No, I do not think anyone in the public eye should have special treatment or be off limits, not even the kids unless the government is going to make a law to stop the media from taking, selling, and publishing these types of photos. It should not just be Obama’s family that is off limits, it should be all people’s families off limits, like Julia Roberts when she was chased down by the media with her kids in the car. Apply the privacy fairly or not at all. The Obama’s knew that by running for office their whole family would be affected whether they approve or not. So make it a law.

The residents of Hawai`i will respect the Obamas’ privacy during their vacation. The news media should, too. Of course, the tabloids and websites that publish this stuff are not legitimate news meda; they are celebrity exploiters.

Everyone with a camera has the equal rights as any news reporter, to capture and report newsworthy items. Everybody has the right to privacy, as inside their home, or restroom, but where there is no expectation of privacy, i.e., when people are in public, some privacy rights are surrendered. Photographers have rights on public streets.

Simply put, it comes down to freedom of the press, per the First Amendment. We the people expect a free press, that includes reporter’s access to collect the news and report to we the people.

Can PEOPLE NOT understand there are MORE important issues on which to report???
This is sensationalistic “Yellow Journalism” at its worst.
There are REAL PROBLEMS in America and in the world: Poverty, US CEO GREED taking 12 Billion in “bonuses” after taking 10 billion from US taxpayers, Darfur genicide, need I go on, Recession/depression, Madoff Ponzi, Millions of job losses, etc. We do nothing for other countries and apparently we do nothing for our own people.
Why is the “Britney/Kev-fed”, “Madonna divorce”, and “Obama showing skin” NEWS?
Where are our priorities?
What do we as a country REALLY stand for when our NEWS shows us trivial crap AND we accept it?

This is a serious security matter. If someone can sneak in a camera, what else is being sneaked in? The Secret Service blew this one.
Privacy? Yes, they are entitled to privacy in their private lives. But, in reality from now on, everything about them is news. Goes with the territory.

If they are out in public expect pictures to be snapped. If the paps start hiding in bushes by the whitehouse or climing over fences where the obamas are staying then there is a problem, but if they are on the beach eating in resturant pictures will be snapped.

obama was a lawyer, so was or is his wife, michelle./ LAWSUIT TIME!!!!

Posted by: debra scott | December 23, 2008, 7:39 am 7:39 am

If they wanted privacy, why are they on the beach in bathing suits? This was an intended photo op.

Posted by: tina | December 23, 2008, 8:12 am 8:12 am

The children should ALWAYS be off limts, but don’t bother telling the DailyKos that. Those nut jobs figure everything under the sun is in play!
Obama is if nothing else, a very shrewd politician. If there are photos being taken, he wants them to be taken!

Posted by: Mike_C | December 23, 2008, 8:20 am 8:20 am

Came on Give them there privacy for shame on the parasites.

i’m going to keep this real! close your eyes if you don’t want to see it!!!
the obama’s are truly not going to get the privacy they want hence the privacy they deserve. first because of this economy [how is it affecting them], second they’re the first african american family in the white house[ black n' white], and last but not least because people are nosey. i’m not really into the paparazi but i think i might be intrested in what they do but to a very certain extent.

IF we can’t protect our President from cameras how is he protected from worse?
Just like in the past, the press should show respect to the children of our President. They ar elittle girls who deserve to be happy and not harassed. Will we allow them to be hounded the same way Princess Diana and her kids were? I sure hope we show more respect than that. Merry Christmas

There was another photographer on the grassy knoll. I think he/she should get credit for the photo.
Secret Service???
B.S. there’s a reason it’s called a “snap-SHOT”.
“My camera lense can barely see the bullet hole”.– “Here use my scope”.
Good thing there are no beaches in Bells, Tennesee. Huh?
I’m sure this was a photo-op to assure us all that we have no worries— yeah right.
Try taking photos at a concert, runway or power plant, or worse, try selling them.
Get a life… this ain’t news. Oh! wait, if we outlaw this crap, we’ll be bailing-out poor Hollywood.
Move on. We need to get back to work. Has anyone noticed that the only ones still working are the same political names we already know… where’s the CHANGE WE NEED. Nothing has/will change.

This is NOT news at all!! I don’t know of any man who keeps their shirt on while swimming. All presidents are people & they need/go on vacation too..who cares! He is serving the public & has huge tasks ahead of him, the least we can do is let him be. Any of the children, especially should be left alone if that is what they want. Tabloids, paparazzi & ogling celebrities based on looks is a complete waste of time & money.
