Closing Arguments: OJ Sent to Slammer

Despite last minute apologies, a Las Vegas judge sentenced 61-year-old OJ Simpson today to 33 years in prison for his role in the armed robbery of two sports memorabilia dealers in 2007. He will be eligible for parole after serving nine years of his sentence. Simpson was acquitted of the murder of ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman over a decade ago in "The Trial of the Century." Tell us what you think: Was justice finally served for OJ?

Gee, what can I say about the OJ deal? What goes around, comes around???

I thought the law says that a person should not be tried more than once for the same crime.

Sounded like a poor apology.

I think OJ is a sleaze but I feel this case was unfair and for him to get 9 yrs when other people do the same crimes and worse and get far less is unfair. I think the Judge was a moron and her closing statements will help his appeals. She basically sent him to prison based on his previous crime. I feel this is horrible as it gives me little faith in the justice system.

Justice was not served. Why ??? Because again White supermacy reared it’s ugly head. How can a jury of one’s peers only have white people. This was a legal lynching. The DA excluded all black jurors. You call that justice or just us.

I think it’s wrong. He was set up and then railroaded. I’ve never thought he was guilty of killing his ex-wife and I’ve hated the way he has been hounded ever since. I hope he gets an appeal and then a FAIR judge and jury!!

His first trial should not have affected the outcome of this trail and it did!

OJ’s sentence was outrageous for the crime for which he was accused. I guess the judge finally vindicated the persons who believe he murdered his ex wife.
Bad precedent!!!!!

I think OJ was VERY stupid for allowing the system to get another crack at him. I don’t care what the judge says, her sentencing encompassed punishment for what many non-minorities considered an outrage….the double homicide acquittal in 1995. OJ deserved to be punished, but the punishment did not fit the crime. Give me a break. I hope his appeal goes well….but probably not.

Congrats, white America! You finally got him. Terry Moran had a delightful glee about him tonight as he announced the verdict. He cut his teeth on the original trial, and his reaction to that verdict was almost tearful. What a difference. Terry: Make sure you join the original prosecutors on Larry King. You deserve a seat at that table.

As much as OJ is despised and maybe even “guilty” of past crimes, the American justice system has to be just that…”just”. The crimes he committed in Las Vegas did not merit 33 yrs. I am in no way an OJ fan but we simply cannot let “Group Thinking” sway the democratic process.

Posted by: Kelly G | December 6, 2008, 12:16 am 12:16 am

I do agree with the verdict, but I dont agree with the time to be served 33 years. People have done worse crimes and were sentenced for less. You can do the same crime in a diiferent state and be senteced for less. I guess he should of went for a plee bargain. he could of probably got probation or 5 years with a release for good behavoir.

Every thiniking person knows that this trial was connected to the LA trial. Whatever OJ did then, should have nothing to do with this trial. Yes, his behavior in this case was that of a fool, but it did not warrant this verdict. The instruction to the jury was inapropiate, the statement made by the jury foreman indicated prejudgement, which shows us that Lady Justice is not blind.

Posted by: Harry | December 6, 2008, 12:17 am 12:17 am

No, shouldn’t be punished for trying to get his own things back. Bad judgement, but no harm done. Also, double jeopardy because he can never loose the previous legal problems. Anyone who knows anything about military knows one person can not cause killing of two people struggling for life. He may have been involved but not directly.

NO WAY! OJ was found innocent by a jury of his peers in his murder trial. Everyone that disagreed with the verdit has been after him ever since. This judge is jury is no different. It was a farce!

The only thing OJ is sorry for is getting caught. He got away with double murder. So often those with celebrity status, whether they are in sports, politics, or whatever, think they don’t have to abide by the same rules as those without so much money. Even if they don’t want to be considered role models, they are still setting examples. If you can’t do the time, don’t do the crime! Don’t be so ignorant to think they don’t know they are doing something illegal!

Posted by: Maria | December 6, 2008, 12:23 am 12:23 am

9 years was excessive for a person trying to recover items stole from him. O J isn’t a threat to society. I’ve seen people who have kill someone receive shorter sentences. He did something wrong but the sentence is too harsh. This is a waste of tax payer money to pay for the care of someone who can pay-off his debt to society in more productive way. I in no way agree with the way he tried to retrieved his own property.

I am aware that in practice OJ was not being tried for the same crime. But in reality that is exactly what happened. As you stated he did something that was stupid (he’s done a lot of stupid things) but the sentence they are giving him is to try in some way to make up for the fact that he didn’t get convicted of murder.

Posted by: Wendi | December 6, 2008, 12:30 am 12:30 am

O.J. finally got what he deserved. I know justice will never really be served for the Gouldman and Brown families, but at least this is something…considering his outrageous behavior since he got away with murder 13 years ago. Notice that the African-American community is not defending him this time around.

Posted by: Dale M Schultz | December 6, 2008, 12:31 am 12:31 am

The Simpson judgment certainly provides the public with a lot of warm fuzzies about justice and the court system. The sentence certainly does not fit the crime. The judge should be ashamed of herself. Perhaps we need to examine the value system whereby we, the public, put the athletes on a pedestal and pay them exorbitant salaries. It is no wonder that they get to feel, as gods, that they can do no wrong. So who is really to blame?

In most crimes they do use your past record as a guide line in what kind of person you are THE TIME FOR THE CRIME FIT get over it black people wrong is wrong

Posted by: mike | December 6, 2008, 12:34 am 12:34 am

OJ wass find inacent of any wrong doing in the past murder trail; but for some reason the screwed up leagal system of America said he still hadto pay for his being found innocent. The judge in the more recent trail referenced at 1 point that her decision was not basedon the the past, but why would she referrence it if she gave no consideration to the past. America believes what they want regardless of if a person is found innocent; Michael Jakson, R. kelly go figure. OJ did ommit a crime without a shadow of doubt, but so did the men he committed the crime against, but did those men face charges for theft of propertry or possession of stolen property with intent to sell? the legal wolves have been out to get OJ since the same legal system they are sworn to live by found him innocent. Why I ask you was the father of that guy that was murdered by some unknown person allowed to make comments about anything having to do with the outcome of this trail? and why would OJ have to pay for not committing a crime in which the court system found him innocent. This country speaks of change in this time like it never has before; 1 important thing that needs to be changed is the legal system; it has destroyed a legend that at one time Americe thought was the greatest thing on two legs that carried a football. Strange there are many police officers that repersent the court system that have been caught on camera or by many eyewitnesses committing crimes of excessive abuse or pure murder and most of them are fired, disciplined without termination, or get a slap on the wrist, while very few face prison time; considering police are suppose to be some of the most knowlegdable people of the law, they should the most harsh disciplinary action for breaking the laws they have took an oath to uphold Itis very clearwhy so many countries have such low regards for the U.S personally and politically.

Nicole Brown Simpson called it before his first trial. “He is gonna kill me and get away with it” This man is arrogant and believes he can get away with anything. The law clearly defines criminal behavior.
OJ just got the “juice” finally! He lives in his own world and now it will be in a jail cell where he belongs. The jurors convicted him on the evidence – period!

Posted by: RGreene | December 6, 2008, 12:38 am 12:38 am

For those who are reveling in OJ Simpson’s demise should take some time to think about the fairness of this whole situation. Whatever you feel about OJ Simpson, it is unfair to use the court system for personal revenge. Would you feel this to be a fair judgement for your father, brother, self? Revenge and injustice are all good for some of us until it’s your turn. How do you want the system to work for you?

I’m not a fan of O. J. Simpson, but I think he is being subjected to a miscarriage of justice. Although it is widely thought that Simpson was guilty of the 1994 murder of his wife and her acquaintance, he was acquitted by a jury of his peers and therefore must be considered by the legal system to be innocent and should be treated without prejudice.
It appears to me that Simpson has been honest about his involvement in the Las Vegas incident and, while they may have been misguided and reckless, his intentions were not sinister. I think some consideration should be given to the fact that he was just trying to recover personal, sentimental items which he claims were stolen from him, and that the person who accompanied him and produced the recording of the event did so for a profit and may have contributed to the escalation of violence to increase his recording’s value.
If Simpson truly was innocent of the 1994 murders, it would not be hard to imagine that he would have a healthy distrust of the justice and law enforcement systems and opt for an alternative method of retrieving his belongings. It’s possible that this was just a bad idea that truly wasn’t intended to harm anyone.
I think the judge was influenced by Simpson’s past. I believe that an average person would have been afforded more leniencies and I don’t believe that Simpson has been treated fairly.

Posted by: Mike Laurence | December 6, 2008, 1:03 am 1:03 am

Justice was not served. OJ is being punished for the case concerning his late wife. The crime he committed does not warrant eight years of imprisonment. The judge is baised. This should teach OJ that he is hated for the murder of his wife and boyfriend whether he committed the crime or not so,he should be careful in whatever he does.

Posted by: CHINNY | December 6, 2008, 1:07 am 1:07 am

We think that the sentence was unfair he didn’t kill anyone no one was hurt it was a set-up . All he really did was use some profanity. The judges records of other cases should be audit because there was surely somes discrimnation going on

Posted by: stella | December 6, 2008, 1:32 am 1:32 am

I’m not bothered by OJ Simpson getting sent up the river for about 9 years. Given his track record as a sociopath, I don’t feel a miscarriage of justice was committed –although it could be argued very well that the sentence reflected past judgements, rather than the 2007 crime.

Posted by: kat | December 6, 2008, 1:35 am 1:35 am

i get the feeling some folks are rejoicing in the misery of another how truly sad and pathetic.

Posted by: stella | December 6, 2008, 1:35 am 1:35 am

I agree that he’s not a great guy, but it is only permissible for the courts to judge him for the current case — to allow a sentence to reflect past judgements is wrong (and illegal). Everyone is entitled to be treated fairly and presumed innocent but in this case he was not.

Posted by: Mike Laurence | December 6, 2008, 1:56 am 1:56 am

OJ did not get a fair trial. It was so obvious that the judge hated him. She made up her mind even before the trial ended. SHAME on her!

Posted by: arthur | December 6, 2008, 3:13 am 3:13 am

Like him or hate him, this trial was a farce. Watching this today on TV and hearing this Judge say that she was sentencing OJ on the merits of this case when one of the VICTIMS says that he doesnt believe in retrospect that there was a crime (and the Judge and Jury simply ignoring that one fact alone) completely turns aside the concept of fair trial. What trial do you know of where a victim tells the judge that no crime occurred?? OJ will win on appeal and this judge will come out looking like a fool. OJ will then either live the low key life he should have been living, or, he will do something that really is a crime. But this time around, it wasnt such a crime to merit the punishment she dished out. Kidnapping??? Give me a break. He didnt kidnap anyone. In 49 other states, what happened in that room would not be considered kidnapping.

Posted by: D Schill | December 6, 2008, 3:18 am 3:18 am

I don’t have any sympathy in what he did. The evidence were there on camera and to say you’re sorry at the end, it doesn’t make sense especially when you were caught on camera with the other men who went along with you to get your so called “property” back. If your property was stolen, why didn’t OJ get the police involve and do it legally. I think in my opinion from the crime he did, he deserves more than just 9 years…why is it that stars are getting away with crime and if it was us regular individual, it wouldve been a longer sentence…i still don’t get that.

I am 47 year old African-American Man who grew up in Los Angeles, idolizing O.J. Simpson. Without question, he was one of my hero’s. I met him as a child through my dad who worked at USC. I watched him win the Heisman Trophy at USC. I watched him perform in the NFL and dominate at the running back position. I saw him participate in the ABC’s Super-Star competition. We all saw him transcend sport. He was Tiger Woods before Tiger Woods was born.
We all saw O.J. Simpson run through airports for HERTZ rent-a-car. During the 70′s he was America’s # 1 salesman. He had the Midas touch. And now, “The Juice” goes to jail (this is his first offense mind you) on some BS charges i.e. kidnapping for taking back some personal items that were rightfully his??
Again, let me remind you, he was a first-time offender. I am telling you, this Man was “raked over the coals”…
Even when you have the means to retain Johnnie Cochran, F. Lee Bailey and Robert Schapiro and battle in the Court of Law, “White-America” will always be vindictive.

Anyone with a mind knows that justice went out the window in this case. The indiscrepancies in our legal system are once again there for all to see. Those who choose not to see will say justice was served. This was a vendetta and the legal lynching of O.J. Simpson. Something that never should have been allowed to happen and never would have happened in a system that defines itself as just!

This is a very difficult one. Yes, OJ was very stupid, and arrogant. He should have kept a low profile after the first trial. I met him at a wealthy friend of mines house about 4 or 5 years ago, and he was arrogant, and did have an attitude like he got away with murder, which he probably did. Ultimately, I think karma gets everyone. You reap what you sow. I actually predicted he would do something bad and get caught. He couldn’t help himself. He’s so sick, he probably didn’t think he was doing anything wrong. Well, I guess it all caught up with him. I pray he realizes his wrongs, humbles himself, and changes his attitude, and repents. I’m not a religious fanatic by any means, but it’s all very clear here.

Posted by: Wayne | December 6, 2008, 4:12 am 4:12 am

Regardless of what you think of OJ, he is a 61 year old man with no criminal record. Yes, that’s right, no record. 9-33 years for this offense is ridiculous at face value. Sure he has a past, but judges are supposed to judge on the merits of the case and the evidence. If he was 61 year old OJ smith from queens, he would have nnever served a day behind bars. If you want a justice system that is equal and fair, it needs to be equally fair to people we despise.

Posted by: GDenny | December 6, 2008, 4:13 am 4:13 am

I thought I would feel good about him being convicted finally, but oddly it’s not satisfying because 9 to 33 years seems rather like a bit too much punishment for the current crime and 0 years seems like way to little for the previous one.

NOT to say i would ever kill anyone but play along with me , The minute i was found NOT guilty, I would have kiss the ground of freedom till my lips got damage… and hug johnnie cochran so long he would have to threating me with a restraining order.
Then i would have head home pack my bags and put 4 countries off the bat on my radar to move to… france , Canada , brazil, italy; old saying ‘OUT of SITE OUT OF MIND.
but lets say i still wanted to be in America , then get away from the central scene and move to hawaii or get a farm far far away in montanna, heck build a golf course on your farm.
I would know staying in America which would have eyes on me 24/7 would not be a good move and quiet frankly be bad for my health. Knowing i would get no breaks even if i jaywalk.
Final summary! the prison system will add ANOTHER DUMB person within its WALLS… and IAM ALWAYS good with that.

I truly believe OJ murdered Ron and Nichole, that being said, he was found not guilty in a court of law and that should have nothing to do with this case. I believe this was a more personal case to the judge and the jury and therefore he got more time. Should he spend time in jail, of course, but it should have nothing to do with Ron and Nichole…nothing! Like it or not, a jury of his peers found him not guilty.

Posted by: samhiguchi | December 6, 2008, 9:34 am 9:34 am

Liberal, swiberal, who cares? This is not about being sorry for O.J., it’s not about whether or not you or I think he was guilty of killing Nicole Brown or Ron Goldman, it is definitely not about whether or not the black community supports him or not. If judge and jury based their verdict on any thing other than the merits of this case, then, surely O.J. did not get a fair trial, and justice was definetely not served. The sentence rendered was unjustice, and unfair, because despite a verdict of innocense, people still want to find the man guilty of the previous crime. Tell me, how can we call such a thing justice?

My best friend was murdered by her husband 6 months before OJ was accused of murdering Nicole and Ron. I can attest through personal experience to the ‘type of personality’ that would commit such an act.
In the area of domestic violence, the adage would be ‘same stuff, difference face’. Meaning – nearly all perpetrators share the same unhealthy personality traits.
Spring forward almost 15 years and we find that Mr. Simpson has displayed, on a regular basis, those same traits in all his personal interactions. That would specifically be arrogance, boldness, mysogenism, bullying, etc.
He got the sentence he deserved for the crime he committed. Stop treating him like a sports hero. He ceased being that years ago.
Remember – ‘one aw shucks erases 10 attaboys’……….

He threw his plea bargin out the window so this was the choice he made. Every crime has a maximin/minimum sentence and he knew this going in.
He got away with murder in the past based on the evidence, fortunately this time he had a proper jury. Justice was finally served.

Must of you are nuts! Did you even listen to the trial or are you basing your comments are pure emotion or reverse racism. Regardless what this man did or did not do in the past, he planned this crime, got others to do his bidding and committed armed robbery. His “apology” showed that he is clueless and still puts himself above the law. 33 years was a perfect sentence for “this” crime. I am so tired of judges letting criminal off with wrist slaps.

It is inexplicable how such a “sweet” guy like this ends up in such trouble with the law twice in twenty years. In fact,I am beginning to think he is guilty of both crimes.

I think that this was a modern day lynching by the Las Vegas “justice” system. I have seen people kill people and get less time than OJ received. This was a setup and all the Judge and the DA wanted wanted was notoriety. How can a black man be judged by a all white jury that answered a jury questionier that said they believed that he was guilty of the killing in Los Angeles. The Judge still allowed them and also allowed the DA to remove to black female jury members from the jury. There intent was evident all along. A lynching in Las Vegas!!!!

This is nothing less than double jeoprody. OJ was found not guilty in the murder case, so get over it. That is the law. This so called armed robbery/kidnapping case was a set up. People here in Las Vegas get away with murder quite often (it just depends on who you are) so why is he going to jail 9-33 years for trying to get his own stolen property back. Making someone stay in a room being called kidnapping is unbelievable. He did not carry the gun, why are the ones who did going free? Because they played ball with the DA to send OJ away for a long time. This is an unjust system and I am putting that judges and the DA’s name on my refrigerator door to remind me when they run for re-election I will be sure to not vote for them.

Well to answer your ? about Did justice finally get served for OJ? YES! I still think he did kill his EX-Wife, and Ronald. So with his sentance to Prison was excactly what he needed. Like it says in the Bible, What you do to others will come back to you twice as hard!
But i think we need to pray for him! weither he did wrong or not! That is what God wants us to do!
