Closing Arguments: Must Blagojevich Resign?
We reported in tonight’s show that all 50 Democrats in the Senate today signed onto a request for Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s resignation because of the graft allegations he’s facing.
The unified call on Capitol Hill followed the same message from President-elect Barack Obama, whose vacated Senate seat is at the center of the scandal.
At this hour, the rallying cry continues to fall on deaf ears, with the governor’s office going on with "business as usual."
So tonight, we ask you: Should the embattled governor simply resign? Or should he be allowed to fulfill his duties until convicted in a court of law?
Tell us what you think.

He should resign!

I am from Illinois, and I think he should resign immediately. He is making a mockery of his office, and we cannot trust him with anything.

I’m embarrassed about the crooked governor we have in Illinois. Remember – he won on a platform of reform after Gov. Ryan was gone.
I think he must resign at once. I suspect he won’t, however, as he doesn’t think he’s done anything
wrong!!!

Although he is innocent till proven guilty in the courts, the evidence looks pretty bad. This is not something democrats need right now but more importantly its not something the country needs. He should resign and face trial. If he is indeed innocent then I will gladly take the “in your face” but now is now and we need to move on.

Blago should resign, but he’s too stupid, yet vain. I think Lisa Madigan ought to pick him like a buzzard and impeached him stripping him of all pension and monies owed.

The prosecutors are very experienced, and must know what they are doing! Therefore yes yes yes, he should resign. Tapped phone call conversations are enough for me. He has shamed himself, and all the people of Illinois. What more do we need to hear. Just resign, and leave Illinois.

He should resign ASAP and spare the residents and taxpayers of Illinois the expense and disgrace of impeachment proceedings. It is unrealistic that he will be able to adequately fulfill the role of Govenor and concentrate on Illinois issues / business with the legal and personal issues he will be dealing with, regardless of whether he is ultimately proven guilty or innocent.
Posted by: Amy | December 11, 2008, 12:17 am 12:17 am
Requesting that the Govenor resign should not be a question, instead it should be a commond. The United States of America is the only country in the world that allows immoral and disrespectful behaviors to go unpunished, and reinforces negative behaviors with Media exposure. I love this country but I am often disappointed with this country tolerance for bad behaviors.

His leadership role as governor has been completely shattered and the cost of an impeachment trial is something Illinois should not be forced to absorb. Due to his illegal activity the state is already faced with the potential of a thirty million dollar special election to fill President Elect Obama’s Senate seat. Enough is enough!

Govenor Blagojevich MUST resign. He is (as any American) innocent until proven quilty. HOWEVER, he is not qualified to govern the State of Illinois. He can not be taken seriously nor can he be trusted & therfore he can no longer be effective.
Dear Santa, all I want for Christmas is a statesmen to govern Illinois NOT A POLITICAN. And a Cubs World series championship, please. HAPPY HOLIDAYS

He should definitely resign. He has lost all respect and everything he touches is tainted. Our laws says that you are innocent until proven guilty, but he has condemned himself with his own words. The Feds have been looking into his actions for a few years now, and he does more harm by remaining in office.

Innocent until proven guilty in a court of law—–that is our system. We are a nation of laws. Has it been proven that he accepted money? Or did he just talk about it?

I usually believe in innocent until proven guilty. This RBJ, has been blatantly brazen, and has shown incredibly bad judgement. The best judgement he could show at this time would be to resign. He certainly should not have the opportunity to appoint a senator to Barack Obama’s vacated seat.

This guy is the epitome of what’s wrong with most politicians, today:
1. Willing to lie, unequivocally
2. Pursuing public office for only selfish motives like wealth and power
3. Blatantly pedaling influence with no conscious
4. Not even enough decency to admit or recognize and/or own up to wrongdoing
These guys needs to revisit the values upon which this great nation was built: The word of God, honor, sacrifice, honor, hard work, honor, self denial, generosity, honor and Biblical principles…
Our forefathers would never do anything like this, nor vote themselves life-long salaries and life-long health benefits all while government programs like social security goes broke…this guy…the epitome of today’s “public servants”!

Yes,in a court of law he is presumed innocent until proven guilty. However, the FBI have tapes of his voice saying that he wants $$ or favors for this senate seat. For the state of Illionios’ sake, for the Democratic party’s sake, for the Countrys’ sake- he should resign immediately & start preparing for his defense [if he is innocent I wish him a speedy aquittal-if he is guilty-a quick flight to prison].
Posted by: Roberta | December 11, 2008, 12:23 am 12:23 am
As an Illinoisan and a Democrat who voted for him, I want him to resign. This is WAAAAY beyond the usual petty corruption of Illinois. We are use to the slippery Alderman who weasels his way up the ladder on campaign contributions and clout with government contractors. But, despite the Nation Media frenzy, there are and have been Good Honest Illinois Public Servants like, Paul Simon, Barack Obama, and Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn.

Not only should he resign his office, but in my opinon he should also be charged with conspiring to sell President Elect Obama’s vacant seat. Being From the South Eastern tip of Illinois, Blagojevich has been nothing but an embarrasement since his first term in office. We need to get rid of him NOW, before he totally destroys Illinois.
Posted by: MH | December 11, 2008, 12:23 am 12:23 am
Democrats in Illinois waited 26 years since the last Demcoratic Governor, and this jerk is what we got? On the other hand, there is a reason why Blagoyevich thought corruption is “business as usual” in Illinois. Before the FBI leaves this less than fair state, please dig into the Edgar and Thompson years so we can start over with a clean slate in Illinois. Rod, it’s time to go quietly into the night or else wait for lights out in prison.

I do not think he should be allowed to resign – he should be investigated to the fullest and lets see how many shake out as participants in the scheme – it could be surprising as to might become implicated in the scheme if fully investigated. Let’s shake all of them out and mete out what is due. Too easy for one guy to bail out and let the others run free.

Seems how they all got bailed out, why should Gov. B. feel as though he’s not entitled to same? (Of course he’s not, nor were they). Also, as a Michigander and all my family too, do not want Detroit’s Big Three bailed out either. They made their bed…. so.. His ethical mandate is NOT that he avoid actual impropriety; he is required to adhere to the mandate that he not demonstrate even the appearance of impropriety. We have all had enough of elected officials who evince an air of entitlement. Nobody wants this man or any other to flaunt their power and sense of entitlement during this time.

Tape recordings? An indictment
longer than a roll of toilet paper? Innocent until proven guilty? Fine, but as a resident of Illinois I think it is time for Blago to resign and deal with his problems which are the result of his own extreme greed and vanity. He’s been on the state payroll for too long and has done absolutely nothing except run scams. Obviously, if Blago hadn’t gone over the top with this senate seat scam and the Feds hadn’t finally blown the whistle we’d have at least another two years of this clown. I doubt if he’ll resign, but I’m sure he will be impeached.

Mr. Blagojevich didn’t break any law – he just talk about it, there’s no exchange of the actual money transaction. Just like all the talk and no action that Mr. Obama uses during the campaign.

After living in Chicago the last twenty years, I have to say that no one was really shocked about Blagojevich’s corruption, just the appalling level that he had taken it!
His campaign was shrouded with questionable bids and ethical issues that were related to Union backing and construction bids (it’s a bit hazy, you’d have to look it up). It was a burning topic in credible media circles. The majority of Chicagoians (myself included) were shaking our heads in disbelief when he was elected, but sadly, many of the people I worked with felt that it was just a reflection of the normal Chicago political “cog” that seems to exist at every level. All of that is why, many of us fought so hard to get Obama into the Senate. I worked in the same educational circles in Chicago’s South Shore neighborhood – we all learned that he went out of his way to gain integrity for the “underdogs”. Blagojevich SHOULD resign! Thank God I am still on the “Obama high” when I think of Illinois. Blagojevich is a huge bruise!

First Rezko, now Blagojevich…both with major fundraising ties to President-elect Obama. And the Feds choose to go after the IL governor regarding Obama’s vacant senate seat, when it’s very possible that there were ties equally as damaging as Rezko’s involving fundraising in other areas well before the Presidential election. Too many individuals mentioned, including Jesse Jackson, Jr. have direct ties to President-elect Obama. Chance? NO. Potential corruption being ignored for the sake of Hope and Change? YES.
Governor Blagojevich should resign and make a deal with the FEDS; if all else fails, request for a pardon from President Obama (since he ignored Obama’s plea to resign- the chance for a pardon is next to ‘nil’).

I live in Illinois and I am tired of all the nonsense going on in this state. Yes, the governor should resign, immediately. He is innocent until proven guilty but is a major distraction and must go. Also, as I was watching and listening to Jesse Jackson, Jr. speak in certain unequivocal terms and absolute indignation, I was reminder of what Shakespeare said: “Me thinks he doth protest too much”. If Jesse Jackson, Jr. (or his father) tried to buy the Senate seat and the Feds can prove it, wouldn’t that just be the most delightful icing on the cake?

This is sort of like Sodom and Gomorrah. Show me one honest politician and I will save the country. Does anyone believe that this isn’t standard operating procedure for everyone in politics? How do you think Ms. BO got her seat on the board that she had to resign because she is now First Lady? The gov just wanted some nice easy money for his wife as well. Why do you think Neil Bush is on six different boards with an income from them at over $500,000. Why do you think these porks are added to the Congressional barrels? The poor Il gov is going, what did I do wrong? This is the political way of life. Dear God, I cannot show you one honest politician. We are doomed.

I’m more concerned that Nightline anchor hottie Terry Moran is letting himself go gray. Forget about Blagojevich, what could Terry be thinking??! Terry, your face is too young for gray hair. Dye it! Yawn. Leave him alone, he is just like any other politician of late from Illinois. No one seemed to mind the money Pebo got for housing in his district when a Senator that allowed his bud “Tony” to get wealthy from building and managing shoddily built apartments, in return “Tony” raised plenty of campaign cash for Pebo…. until Pebo tossed him under the bus.
You may as well run a story about how Pebo will save the planet from financial ruin in one week come January.

Corruption runs deep and in all directions.
Funny that Alexrod gave an interview how the Obama office is working closely with blago to find a replacement for the Senate Seat.
Then Bam, The Scandal Breaks and Obama camp now acts innocent and stupid. Like they never ever talked to blago.
The best answer is the Blago was not going to oblige them to whom they wanted. Now he is Thrown to the wolves.
Obama’s office is actually banking on the fact, that Americans are actually that stupid.
I think the FBI should Get a warrant for the Video interview of Axlerod for the case.
I am sure it will disappear before they can get a real copy of it from the news agency.
If Obama handed Blago to the wolves for a plea bargain and anonymity and immunity, I would not be surpised.

In all honesty, it is time to forget about our dear Governor to resign from office. As Citizens of Illinois we should all Demand that he be Impeached Immediately. All this molly coddling is doing is stretching his term as Governor out longer than it need be. I wonder if the Citizens of Illinois knows the fact that our “Governor” has refused to spend one single night in the Governor’s Mansion in Springfield, and on the occaison he has to be in attendance for something, that he in fact is flown to Springfield, and his jet is then flown back to Chicago, only to fly back to Springfield to pick him up when he is done with his business. What part of that makes any sense? No wonder the State of Illinois is flat broke, and while the Governor is resting in his Chicago apartment, the rest of the Citizens of this state are paying out their noses for the upkeep of the residence for the Governor, more needless spending in my humble opinon. Resign from Office, I dont see him doing that any time soon. So as Citizens Of The Great State Of Illinois We Should All Be On The Band Wagon For Impeachement.
