Obama’s Latest Pick
In one move, the President-elect will fill the post of Commerce Secretary, make his first Hispanic cabinet appointment, and dip for the third time into the pool of former primary opponents. The choice, of course, is New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson. As he has done with the other selections, Mr. Obama will make the announcement in Chicago. Tomorrow morning.

This is the one cabinet pick I don’t understand. What is the appeal of Bill Richardson? Every time I’ve seen him debate or interviewed he comes across as a bumbling idiot.

Cabinet secretaries are rarely if ever called upon to engage in debate. Therefore, to judge the value of a candidate merely upon the individual’s ability to debate is an extremely narrow criterium. They are, however, called upon to negotiate on behalf of our country. Bill Richardson is a proven negotiator and that skill will come in very handy as Commerce Secretary since he’ll be called upon to represent the U.S. in worldwide trade negotiations.
