Closing Arguments: Marketing the First Daughters?

As the Obama family prepares for their first weekend in the White House, they’re already embroiled in a controversy, of sorts. Michelle Obama expressed dismay and distress this week about a toy manufacturer creating dolls named after her daughters, Sasha and Malia. Does the First Lady have a point?  Is this unfair exploitation of the young girls, aged 7 and 10? Or, have the Obama’s put their daughters in the public domain and therefore willingly made them subject to the trials and tribulations of celebrity? Tell us what you think.

User Comments

I think the Obamas should really have anticipated that this would happen. I can somewhat sympathize, however, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. That these sweet girls are role models for other children is a big plus.

The girls are now public. The President put them out there.

Posted by: eagles3 | January 24, 2009, 12:08 am 12:08 am

Why in God’s name would stupid Michelle wear $17K earnings when people are starving. stupid negro that’s why.

Posted by: dolores nuccio | January 24, 2009, 12:09 am 12:09 am

I think that the company is exploiting. There was not a Bush twins dolls, nor was there a chelsea clinton doll. What is it, there have been children in the White House before they are no different than the Kennedy kids, Amy Carter or chelesa clinton. It is unfair exploitation.

I think Michelle Obama is correct in her assessment of this matter.

Posted by: Carolyn | January 24, 2009, 12:10 am 12:10 am

The Obama’s can’t have it both ways. They used their daughters images to help with their campaign for the White House so now they cannot complain that the girls are in the spotlight. They put them there.

I think it is really horrible for someone to try to make a marketing toy off the likeness of these two little girls. It is so unreal that everything else in this world is patented and copyrighted, but your own likeness can be used by someone else to whatever means they see fit. These are kids, you shouldn’t be making Dolls of little kids anyway, do something more entertaining with your life..

Posted by: wilson | January 24, 2009, 12:11 am 12:11 am

This is totally unfair to the Obama family especially the girls. The fact that this company has names dolls after the girls without permission of her parents is outrageous. If they have not asked to be in the public eye in this way, their rights should be respected. I think the family should be left alone and given a break.
Thank you,

I understand the Obama’s objection and why they may feel “violated” by the dolls image of their children, they’ve got to know that it’s par-for-the-course in the light that the children are in. I think it’s really healthy for young girls to identify with dolls in the image of the Obama girls, as opposed to what they have on the market now which does nothing to boost moral or a positive self image.

Posted by: Andria | January 24, 2009, 12:12 am 12:12 am

Some people will do anything to make a buck. I do think that it is going to be hard to keep the press away from the girls, but if the Obama’s wish to keep them as low key as possible I think their wishes shall be respected.

Delores Nuccio is just the type of person that we need to be mindful of. What is this subject has to do with Michelle’s earrings and to go negative with calling her a stupid negro because she has earrings that cost that. Perhaps Delores is jealous, the American people did not buy the earrings. My understanding the first family pay their own way. They must buy there clothes, food and personals. Get real people, stop hating Delores.

Posted by: ejp | January 24, 2009, 12:14 am 12:14 am

Dolores Nuccio,
You must be REALLY hurt inside if you lash out at other people like this. I really hope that someone gives you a huge hug and helps you. When you say something as terrible as what you said (even if you meant it as some sick joke), I can’t even muster anger as my first reaction . . . I just wonder what on earth brought you to a place where you would say such a thing, and I feel deep concern for you. I really, really hope that you seek help!!!

Posted by: Seashells23 | January 24, 2009, 12:15 am 12:15 am

I find it to be disrespectful to the first family. If it was done with the parents permission thats one thing but this is just exploitation of two young girls.

Posted by: BD | January 24, 2009, 12:17 am 12:17 am

The kids are used in public for the “family value” look, they are paraded for the cameras, thus, they are public. Palin is still going through the same thing, but you can’t have it both ways. You can’t shelter your kids only when it’s convenient, and use them when it helps you.

Posted by: Darryl | January 24, 2009, 12:17 am 12:17 am

This is about two young children, whose innocence in this world, should and needs to be protected as long as possible. Without the parents’ permission, no child should be marketed and exploited.

Posted by: Sloan | January 24, 2009, 12:18 am 12:18 am

Dolores Nuccio who commented above is a jackass. You’re not angry that Michelle wore earrings valued at 17k. You’re angry because she’s a Negro and CAN AFFORD to wear $17k earrings. You have too much time on your hands darling. Silly white girl….

Posted by: Andria | January 24, 2009, 12:19 am 12:19 am

The Obamas used their girls and their family image to market themselves during the campaining process… it is unreasonable to now say that they are completely off limits and should not be in the public eye now that they have obtained the office. And by choosing to dress themselves and their girls in designer or namebrand clothes, they should expect attention. And here’s a question for the media- why are the Obama’s being praised for their selection of designer clothes when Sarah Palin was criticized for the same thing?! And there’s no double standard?!

Posted by: Misty Roszell | January 24, 2009, 12:19 am 12:19 am

Talk about idiots, if you want to play with the big fish you have to accept that your kids are fair game, DUH!!!!! Don’t want it then LEAVE and take your entire family with you. God Bless America!!! Please!

Posted by: Deb50 | January 24, 2009, 12:20 am 12:20 am

All people in the public should not be exploited. No person should be exploited.
Bush kids did not have dolls made of them.Respect for others. This country does not have it.You still want to use, use, use and oppress.

Posted by: Robert | January 24, 2009, 12:29 am 12:29 am

Our First Lady most definitively has a point! The toy manufacturer, knew, what they were doing. At the expense of two beautiful innocent children. Who need to live as normal a life as possible! For anyone to make a profit off of them. Is just an OUTRAGE! And to think that they are to be exploited because their Dad was voted President is INSANE!As it is, they will hear riducule and criticism about their Dad. They sure don’t need this!BOTTOM LINE IS, WHEN IT COMES TO CHILDREN, LET/LEAVE THEM BE!
GOD BLESS THE INNOCENT CHILDREN!

Posted by: Sabrina | January 24, 2009, 12:30 am 12:30 am

These very sweet young girls can be role models for other children, of course. That they will get much attention as the “First Daughters” is understandable. That does that make it appropriate for them to be unliscensed marketing tools. The President and Mrs. Obama have tried to allow us to get to know the girls a bit, but; the first week is not over and dolls are on the market? That is simply exploitave and inappropriate. The post I viewed above mine by dolores is just unconscienable. By the way, Mr. Bashir, in your intro to this piece tonight you referred to the girls as “tweens”, since when are children this young “tweens”? Please media, especially well respected main stream journalists, think! A seven year old is not a “tween”. Nor is a ten year old. Nuance is important. We have a dangerous recent history in this country of treating young girls as old beyond their years , I know the President and Mrs. Obama will not stand for that.

Posted by: Trish Bukowski | January 24, 2009, 12:33 am 12:33 am

Well, Dolores Nuccio, you might want to get a life. And stop Calling people names! This is about children, not earrings!

Posted by: Sabrina | January 24, 2009, 12:33 am 12:33 am

If Bush can find a silver lining after shoes are thrown at him, the Obama’s can find one too with this issue. I agree, they marketed themselves during the campaign so the exploitation goes both ways. Getting free clothes from J.Crew and others has a cost. These companies have to make money for their shareholders. I don’t think they’ll be able to stop the momentum. They are also helping lots of designers expand business and that is a great thing in this economy. Isn’t that worth smiling about? The tweens seem to understand that this celebrity treatment may not be around when they are older but they can enjoy it while it lasts.

Posted by: wsquared11 | January 24, 2009, 12:40 am 12:40 am

Wasn’t there an article out this week with Sarah Palin asking the media to lay off of her children? Didn’t the article say she couldn’t have it both ways?

Posted by: mwn | January 24, 2009, 12:43 am 12:43 am

I think it is absolutely disgusting. Greed at its worst! To exploit these chidren for the sake of a dollar exemplifies what is wrong with this country! Its greed that got the U.S in the economic mess its in and this is just another example of that same type of corporate greed. What happened to exercising some good moral judgement.
People should be outraged by this….or is there no morality left in this society?

Posted by: Dee | January 24, 2009, 12:46 am 12:46 am

Michelle is absolutely right. This is exploitation of the lowest kind. She and athe PRez have made it clear that their innocent children are off limits. The dolls go way over the boundary of common decency in that they objectify and play off the identities of two innocent little girls. I hope nobody buys the dolls. PS, San Francisco

Posted by: pam | January 24, 2009, 1:02 am 1:02 am

Where were the O’bama’s when the media were feeding on Sara Palin’s children?
Michelle did’nt seem to care. The O’bama’s loved every minute of it.
The O’bama’s have purposely marketed themselves and their children in a planned PR campaign to rival that of hollywood stars…They don’t miss a chance to exploit their own children..I just heard a promo on CBS about an upcoming thing about Michelle and the girls in the White House….They are regularly filmed being taken to school by “daddy”…So why the fuss? Could it be “they” are not benefiting from the dolls?….come on Nightline…Why can’t you point this out..It’s YOUR job to present balanced reporting…
OK I know….you’re in the pay to play game….O’bama can now give exclusive coverage to those he approves of…who gave him the right to let only one media outlet cover portions of the inaugural…America…You better wake up!!!

Posted by: J Moore | January 24, 2009, 1:06 am 1:06 am

I don’t know why I’m always surprised at the nastiness of some people! The other children of the POTUS have not had dolls and toys made in their likeness. And the fact that this man is in this position, a position of public service, does not mean the “he put them out there”. Where does this crap come from?

Posted by: shelleyt | January 24, 2009, 2:36 am 2:36 am

Posted by: Alan | January 24, 2009, 3:07 am 3:07 am

It’s a shame these girls will be rushed into the public limelight and have to suffer the indiscretions of market greed. Living in America and the market mentality is what it is. That said, worse things could happen. We could be living outside this country without the many other freedoms at our disposal. The doll makers owe the girls royalty fees in a big way.

Everyone needs to realize that they are just children and should have their innocence protected and not because they are the presidents because they could be your daughters or sisters or nieces just keep in mind this could be your love ones and would you want someone to prosper are take advantage of little children. I wish Malia & Sasha the best let god keep them safe

Posted by: shonda | January 24, 2009, 3:20 am 3:20 am

Yes! this is exploitation of the Presidents girls. They need to be free to express and be who they are and they should not be exploited for that. This smart free enterprise is BS. IT IS EXPLOITATION OF A PAIR OF BEAUTIFUL, FREE SPIRITED YOUNG CHILDREN. There Free Spirited Ways needs to be shown so that we can show healthy living and stop hiding and giving into the perverts and corrupt expoiters.

I say, get over it Michelle. If she didn’t want her girls in the public eye, she should have thought about that right from square one. The girls are fair game because they are in the public eye…So, quit being such a cry baby, Michelle and GET OVER IT!

To eagles3: Is Sarah Palin a stupid caucasian because she allowed a lot of money to be spent on her wardrobe? Of course not. Whatever Michelle Obama does has nothing to do with her race . . . you racist buffoon.

Posted by: joseph graves | January 24, 2009, 6:22 am 6:22 am

Those ear rings were on “loan” – Obama would never approve his wife spending that type of money nor would she herself ever consider it. That being said, just whose business is it what they spend THEIR money on. They are both very mindful of the economy. Some of us must realize that freedom of speech is not a license to constantly criticize.

to bad so sad, it would be better for them to be bitching about the dolls being made in china, the company donates heaps tocharity with their toys and will probably donate a portion of these products, america free enterprise still so be happy about that

If Michele hadn’t put them on the cover of People magazine and used them for ppolitical gain they wouldn’t have a persona to sell. Now that the cat is out of the bag, it’s kinda hard to put it back in. Here come the new Olson twins, though I’m sure Michele would rather they spend their evenings studying for their SATs. Mom’s fault for selling them.

“If Michele hadn’t put them on the cover of People magazine and used them for political gain they wouldn’t have a persona to sell”
Come on get it real!!! Where on earth you can have a President that people have no idea of what family he has!!!!!! The girls were on People Magazine to allow people to know Obama family, and this does not warrant anyone to exploit them. Please be sensible!

Posted by: Rosie | January 24, 2009, 8:29 am 8:29 am

Yeah Delores Nuccio – why don’t you get a job and you can buy your own $17,000 earrings! I’m sure Michelle borrowed them, but she is by no means a “stupid negro” and I am offended by you calling her that! The Obamas make their own money and they can spend it however they like, THAT’S none of our business!

The Obama’s family pics are all over magazines at every supermarket checkout and newsstand. Can a family have it both ways? It’s difficult to balance this. I don’t think the dolls really even look like the girls, so it’s mostly the name thing. Now – if the the dolls were designed with pictures of the girls faces on them, that would be getting a little too weird.

Dolores Nuccio is a bigot whose comments above only serve to demonstrate her ignorance. As to those whose comments accuse the Obamas of “parading their girls” to promote the President’s campaign are both unobservant and narrow-minded. The Obamas are a close-knit family; the President and First Lady are the parents of young children. Those young girls have a stake in whatever situations affect their parents. During the campaign they WEREN’T “paraded” before the crowds; they appeared when their father won the Democratic nomination and when he won the general election & at his inauguration. They appeared with their parents during a few TV interviews, but by & large, their parents have gone to great lengths to shelter them from public attention. Children like to name their dolls THEMSELVES. If young girls are captivated by the names of the Obama girls, they shouldn’t be deprived of choosing those names for their dolls, whether or not the dolls are ones “of color” or blond and blue-eyed. This toymaker IS guilty of exploitation.

Posted by: nanameow | January 24, 2009, 11:19 am 11:19 am

The dolls are cute and not designed as an insult, so I don’t see a problem. I think it is a reflection of the admiration people have for these two adorable girls. I think Michelle should recognize that there is tremendous interest in her children, and that these dolls are a compliment to her children. Personally, I would be flattered if someone wanted to make a cute little doll representing me. However, the toy company should send a set to the girls!

Posted by: Tanny | January 24, 2009, 3:29 pm 3:29 pm

Unfortunately, the price of all fame in this country is living “in the fishbowl” – the First Family needs to realize and adjust – comprehending this concept which exists in a free enterprising society.
Their beautiful daughters are not being exploited or harmed in any way and the biggest influence in their lives will continue to be their parents who will keep them grounded and focused.

wow where even to begin yes it is sweet that millions of young girls look at the presidents daugthers as role models, but for goodness sakes it does not mean they have to suddenly turn into fashion icons and appear as new inspiration to new products, just because of the markets sick mind to always sell and sell. all we ever demand is more. Yes, being two adorable tweens of the president does have its price of fame but in this case the parents are not happy at all with the marketing of the kids so it should not go on any futher. This can be truamatizing!! I just with they would be left alone they already have enough stress to deal with their dad being the new president and their mom being 1st lady. Obama as his first few days being in office are already as stressful as can be. They are humens just like everyone else so the media and everyone just needs to step back and let them breath. I dont know this whole thing is just wrong on so many levels.

The question is did the toy company get permission from the first family to make these dolls?
If they didn’t then maybe the Obama’s ought to send them a stop order for not asking if this could be done.
On the other hand why have over the top parties and clothes when the country is facing terrible recession.
Who are the elitist now?

Deloris Nuccio, your behavior is immature, ignorant and shameful. You didn’t get the story right, you were dumb enough to post this ignorant statement and I’m hoping that you are neither Democrat, Republican or Independent. You would shame any party you belonged to.

J Moore where were you when this campaign was going on. You obviously never listened to Obama. He repeatedly said “family is off limits” when the media started attacking Palin. Come up with something valid to complain about or do some research before you make yourself look like an idiot.

Speaking as a foreigner, I am horrified that someone can publicly make such racist comments as Ms Nuccio has.
Similarly, although I believe Mrs Obama’s borrowed earrings have nothing whatsoever to do with the current debate, I would have been shocked to see her wearing a $1.70 pair from Walmart! Whether she and we like it or not (and I suspect she does), she is the US’s prime ambassador after her husband. She has to put on a show for the world, she’s the new face that America shows to the world (and she’s not there to please denigratory racists).
I thoroughly agree with Mrs Obama and her stance with regards to these dolls. Rank exploitation of two young innocents and, as a parent wanting to keep my kids’ feet on the ground, I’d be worried about the effects of ‘hero-worship’ and fantasy such merchandise might evoke. Aren’t these good enough reasons to object?
For those who argue that the Obamas ‘shouldn’t have used’ their daughters in the election campaign – what nonsense! You’d prefer that they kept them in a closet for two years and brought them out only for the inauguration?! You’d soon be asking questions and throwing a darned sight more mud then!
Personally, from a foreigner’s perspective, the Obama family looks like the most normal, sorted and open ever to grace the WH. You naysayers really don’t seem to comprehend or value the tremendous power of good they’re doing for America’s image.

Posted by: Sammy | January 24, 2009, 4:33 pm 4:33 pm

As many have already said…the Obamas have paraded their daughters at every possible opportunity, for political reasons…while “saying” they want them to live as normal a life as possible. Now he’s President & they’re STILL parading them. The newspeople said Palin put HER FAMILY in the public eye, so that made them fair game…WHY the double standard?? Palin lost the election & the newspeople are STILL castigating her & her family…How much worse was the coverage about her unmarried, pregnant daughter versus the Obama dolls.YES!! There is racism in the country….ON BOTH SIDES!! But the politically correct refuse to recognize “REVERSE DISCRIMINATION”. When, IF EVER, will our press go back to “reporting the news…all news” impartially?

I think that if it is offensive to the 1st lady to use her daughter’s names to market these dolls, then the names should NOT be used. Surely, these dolls can be marketed without using the 1st daughter’s names.

Posted by: purpledog | January 26, 2009, 4:39 pm 4:39 pm

I find it offensive that a person’s face is not his or her own property. If someone wishes to use somebody else’s face on their product, they should have to negotiate a contract and pay reasonable royalties.
That said, it might be a good thing for Sasha and Malika and everyone else if dolls in their likeness were sold to raise money for the girls’ favorite charity.

Posted by: Jed Closson | January 26, 2009, 4:40 pm 4:40 pm

It is completely inappropriate. Have we not learned anything from our current global crisis? It is not ok do to just anything in order to make a buck!

Posted by: ks | January 26, 2009, 4:41 pm 4:41 pm

The Obama’s didn’t “parade” their girls in public as some are claiming. There is a big difference before “parading” their kids before the media and letting the public get to know the family. If Pres. Obama had chosen to not introduce his daugthers or have them on stage with him at times, the public would have complained much louder. He and Michelle were in a no win situatin.
As for having a differenct standard for Palin, remember that she had her family with her every where she went. Her daugthers were with her at every public event, sitting right there in the front row. The Obama girls were usally home with their grandma 90% of the time.
It’s also my guess that if Palin’s daughter was not pregnant and she and her b.f. had not dropped out of high school, but were both A students, she would not have objected to the publicity. Michelle Obama is objecting to publicity – even positive publicity of her girls. I don’t hear Sarah Palin complaining about the publicity that her youngest daughter recieved because it was all positive.

Posted by: Anne | January 26, 2009, 4:47 pm 4:47 pm

Comments that Obama “used” his family are ridiculous. American EXPECT to know the family of their prospective president. And it would have made no difference anyway – these dolls would still be here – so it is 100% irrlevant.
I agree that people should be able to protect their own likeness and name. However, you have to expect *some* invasion of family privacy when you are the first family.
In my opinion, the Obama’s should threaten the company with legal action for using their highly recognizable names without permission. (Do you think Oprah or other celebrities would allow their names to be ‘used’ for dolls?)
The Obama’s can then demand the lion’s share of the profits from the dolls, which can be put towards a childrens’ charities. If similar toys are created in the future, this could raise a good chunk of money for charity over the next 8-years. This is a legacy the Obama children could be proud of.

I don’t believe the makers of the dolls were racially motivated, this has nothing to do with race. It DOES have to do with making a buck, capitalizing on the names and looks of two small girls.
I suspect there are no laws preventing this kind of business, just as it will do no good to appeal to the decency of the manufacturers of the dolls, because they appear to have none.

Companies will do anything to make a buck. The media put them out there not
their parents.Don’t go there!! There was
no exploitation of the Bush twins.

I must agree with Mrs. Obama. We cannot allow industry and/or media to do things involving private citizens without the expressed written consent of the citizens and/or their guardians.
At the same time, how wonderful it is that America has so embrased our first African-
American First Family. Let’s hope that we get beyond racism, for ever. Meanwhile, the Media has a job to get beyond the love and keep us all informed. Right?

Posted by: raymond | January 26, 2009, 5:04 pm 5:04 pm

I do understand why Mrs.Obama is not happy with the doll that look like her girls. Yes, the girls have been pushed into the limelight but they are not public domain. Their mother and father are but the kids should be off limits til they are old enough to make that choice for them self.

Posted by: Delores | January 26, 2009, 5:12 pm 5:12 pm

Regardless if the First Children was paraded in or out of the Publics eyes, The First lady is right on target in my opinon. We all have rights as Free Americans, and as suck, if a doll was to be marketed in the First Childrens names then they sould have been contacted, and gotten prior permssion to use the girls names on the dolls. As it seems to be that Was Not Done. So i say pulld these dolls off the market and or boycott their manufactures, and in answer to others questions, there have been No other First Children Immortalized as a Doll. Nuff Said.

When it comes to children especially those under 18, parents rule. If it is Mrs. Obama’s decision not to have dolls made in the likeness of her children case closed, respect her.

Posted by: Linda | January 26, 2009, 5:14 pm 5:14 pm

It goes with the territory. You bring your daughters up on stage with you at the convention, have them on TV interviews. Of course they will be exploited by companies that are just trying to make a buck. Don’t take it personally. Your family belongs to the public now.

Posted by: Siz | January 26, 2009, 5:14 pm 5:14 pm

Yes, at this stage of the game, it is inappropriate. However, it illustrates capitalism at its best. Hope it does not screw up the mindset of the children. It could have a positive impact on given sectors of society. Heaven knows we need it!

Nanameow, thank you for being the voice of reason and setting a few facts straight. Apparently, a minority of ignorant people are having difficulty accepting the fact that Obama IS THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES and will seize any opportunity they can to share their incredible ignorance and racist ideology with others…such a waste of time responding to such inane comments. There are so many more important issues to address in this world.

Posted by: GrownUp | January 26, 2009, 6:13 pm 6:13 pm

It’s inappropriate for a manufacturer to market these dolls without the Obams’s approval. The Obama’s are too classy to do this, but they should demand royalty payments.

“Only in America. . . ” There is no respect for privacy, much less for our children when it comes to business as usual in America. The finance ceos have proven that big business reigns here – they are above the law, and above the standards of ethical conduct.
Once the US public stops doing business with such companies this, too, shall cease. The First Lady has every right to put a stop to anyone creating an “image” of her children. Maybe shooting the idiots in their kneecaps would help.

My dear Dolores Nucci: How does your answer have anything to do with the question? How would your reply knowing that CEO’s are making millions while people are “starving” as you putting. Your true colors show when you make statement like that and terms like that. She’s made her money and she can spend it any way she see’s fit. What have you done for your commuity? For this country for that matter, other than replace the term “Negro” with what you really meant?
To answer the question at hand. Yes, I think the girls are being taken advantage of, and I will leave it at that.

Posted by: Ken Irvin | January 26, 2009, 8:08 pm 8:08 pm

Your children are your children, and if the first family saids the girls can be on the cover of a magazine and the magizine has permission, that’s different then taking it upon yourself to make a doll that looks like the girls just because you can.Keep letting them know their boundries,Michele, their your and the President’s children, not everybody that wants to make a dollar off them.

Posted by: Sarah McCallister | January 26, 2009, 8:40 pm 8:40 pm

Michelle Obama is correct. Her daughters’ images are private and the doll company’s unauthorized use of their names and images is a violation of their privacy.

It would be OK – IF, IF – all the profits went to underpriveledged children in the USA and Africa.

Posted by: Richard NYC | January 26, 2009, 9:15 pm 9:15 pm

I’ve found some of these comments funny in a way. I’m 60+ years old and I thought the term “Negro” became inappropriate many years ago. I think the proper term now is African-American or Black American.
I keep remembering what Teddy Roosevelt had to say about hyphenated Americans, but readers don’t really need to hear about that in regard to the question at hand.
I don’t think the dolls should use the names or likenesses of the Obama children without a model release. I believe legal precedence can be found regarding that situation. If President and Mrs. Obama paid for a personal attorney, some sort of suit might be appropriate.
I’m also unsure about the proceeds from the dolls. I think one of the commenters mentioned that some of the proceeds would be donated to charity. If that’s not happening, I think it should.
I thought it hilarious how one commenter was so down on another’s errors in spelling and English but made some egregious ones in the very note saying how many the first had made. I hope that’s understandable.
Hopefully, I haven’t made several myself.
I have no idea what it must be like to be a “first child,” but I don’t think I would ever have wanted the experience. I doubt that many of our “first children” ever asked for that position. I can only imagine the problems and situations they will face for perhaps the rest of their lives.
By the way, Wikipedia defines “tweens” as between eight and 12 years of age so I think any reference to these children as “tweens” would be inaccurate at best.
I doubt that more than a very few of those who comment here, if any, have any idea what these children are facing.
May God hold them — and their parents — protectively in the palm of His hand.

Posted by: John | January 26, 2009, 9:31 pm 9:31 pm

I believe it is custom that the President’s children are off limits from political attacks, exploitation and invasion of privacy acts. This is a clear example of commercialism at its worst.

RE: my previous comment. I just realized that one of the children is 10 — legitimately within the “tween” definition. My apologies.

The dolls represents the worst of capitalism which, incidently, is why not only America but most of the world is facing the current economic meltdown:GREED- $$, profits at any cost!
In my opinion, every woman, whether a mother, grandmother, aunt, godparent, cousin or friend should do everything possible to DISCOURAGE the purchase of these dolls. The operative word is BOYCOTT. If there are no buyers, the manufactuers will take them off of the market!

Why do I feel like the Obamas are going to own a toy company?

Posted by: Marie | January 27, 2009, 12:33 am 12:33 am

The Obama’s chose to put themselves in the public eye – this transcends to their children as well. Instead of being upset, perhaps Mrs. Obama could see this as an honor. Not many children have dolls modeled after themselves. I have to say, I’ve never liked Michelle Obama since she came into the public eye. I didn’t care for her racist thesis which I believe shows her true colors. Someone needs to tell her to learn how to walk more gracefully, too. Her style of walk is a poor reflection on her (probably not fair to mention this, but she is the country’s first lady).

Posted by: Toni | January 27, 2009, 12:37 am 12:37 am

I agree with the First Lady. These two little girls are the daughters of the President of the United States. He’s got a “big” job to do. Trying to keep the girls in a “normal” setting is probably next to impossible now. However, the dolls may have positive effects on other girls their age.

Posted by: Elizabeth | January 27, 2009, 7:30 am 7:30 am

I agree with Michelle. It is exploitation of her children. Yes her children are in the spotlight because they are the President’s daughter, but for another company to just happen to use their names for their new dolls is no accident. The company is using that to make money at the children’s expense. I even just saw a restaurant recently named Obama. Children are innocent. I understand Michelle wants to protect their children as much as possible. I applaud her for that.

I think sometime we as a people throw common sense, respect and decency right out the window. As a parent, I am proud of my children and show them off every chance I get. Why? Because I love them. This is hardly anthing thing new, many women with children, all across the globe, feel the same way about their children. I am certain that Michelle Obama, like many of us, feels the same way about her daughters. The only difference is that her daughters father just happens to be the President of the United States. For folks to place these two girls on a pedestals to be America’s role models is insane. Let them grow-up to be well-round young ladies like their parents are trying to raise them to be. While their father is a very public figure, let’s remeber that Barack Obama is just like the any other man… he put his pants on one leg at a time. The Presidency is a job with enomous responsibilities. As an elected official to the highest office, our expections should be high but to add his children to the mix is absolutely not a good thing. For any business wanting to exploit them demonstrates once again the integrity of the individuals that runs them. And as we have been witnessing for the past few years or so, it’s that lack of integrity that has the US in the current economic crisis that it now sits. If you still can’t fathom just how much decency, respect and integrity some of us lack, read the posting by Deloris Nuccio, she is a clear example of the idiosyncratic thought process that continues to keep america stagnated.

Even tho I may not agree with the toy makers, when the family is in the public the whole world is watching. They are open to everything. One person made mention that no other presidential children had dolls made in thier image. And just because the dolls have the names they do there’s no guarantee that they are named after the two girls. (even tho it is more likely than not) Also, I have a theory in that as the first black president, that is why they will be through more than anyone else. I feel for them, but they knew what they were getting into when they signed up about their daughters. They will have to get used to it, because it will probably get worse before it gets better. I just pray that nothing happens to them because of all the publicity. Even if we didn’t vote for him, he is now our president and we must show respect.
