Closing Arguments: Rank Obama’s Predecessors

The four living U.S. presidents — George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Jimmy Carter — met for lunch today at the White House with President-elect Barack Obama. It was a historic gathering just 13 days before the inauguration. So tonight, we ask you to rank President-elect Obama’s predecessors. Who was the best? Who was the worst? Tell us what you think.

User Comments

Ranking the previous (or soon to be “previous”) Presidents:
1. Bill Clinton
2. George H.W. Bush
3. Jimmy Carter
4. George W. Bush
However… the legacy of these four men seem more to be tied to what they do once out of office rather than what they did while President. Nobel-prize-winning Jimmy Carter ranks first in my mind as a former president for his work helping to encourage good government throughout the world and for his commitment to organizations like Habitat for Humanity. Bill Clinton’s commitment to AIDS treatment and disease eradication worldwide makes him a close second. The older Bush, although not as active, has also joined in supporting worthy causes, most notably Katrina relief; he places third in my mind.
What will George W do as a former president? I haven’t heard any plans from him about this sort of “world building”. Maybe in time we’ll see him involved in the sort of work the other three former presidents have been involved with, but right now his lack of plans puts him dead last in my opinion.

I think that barrack obama will be a great president as for the ranking of the presidents to me itwill be: 1)Jimmy Carter 2)George Bush Sr 3)Bill Clinton 4)George Bush Jr can’t rank Barrick Obama he hasn’t started his presidency yet but I hope he can do something for not only the present veterans but the past veterans all us old veterans realize we have been forgotton. What upsets me is that the American people seem to forget why they have the freedom they have all they know is that they have their tv’s, cars, houses and remote controls but American people need to ask themselves why they have can enjoy great things in life.

1 Bill Clinton
2.George H W Bush
3 Jimmy Carter
4 George W. Bush
I agree with the majority of historians who rank George W. Bush as the Worst President in History
Started with a surplus, ended with a historic defict
Started a war in Irag costing a 3/4 Trillion dollors
Over 500,000 innocent Iraqs killed
Because of foreigh policy, U S losses prestige throughout the world
Constitutional Rights lost via Patriot Act.
Worst Economic Crises since Great Depression
Has created greatest wealth desparity via tax cuts for the rich and deregulaton of business.

My comment on the tragic situation in Gaza. I think that the country of Isreal should stop the bombings and use the ground forces to go into gaza and take care of hamas. I feel with the ground forces there will be minimal lose of civilian life. It is the children that really upset me dearly. These poor children do not realize what is going on and don’t understand but are getting killed because of a no good low life terroist hamas. Just one comment to hamas fight like men only kids hide behind women and children. Please leave the poor children alone.

Having lived through the presidencies of each of these gentlemen, my ratings are based on the job that they did as president, not on revisionism or work they did as ex-presidents.
1. Bill Clinton (you can’t argue with unprecedented peace and prosperity and solving the problems as they came up);
2. George H.W. Bush (pragmatic problem solver, coalition builder, superb job on Gulf War I and foreign policy but lacking full grasp of economic and social ills);
3.Jimmy Carter, (a failed president, who still did some good things, 1978 Egypt/Israel treaty etc., but out-of-his-league – anti-Vietnam, anti-Watergate president who may not have lied to us but failed to protect us); and
4. George W. Bush (a missionary zealot without a clue who aggressively took the country way off track and didn’t even consult with his father on foreign policy- a total disaster).

# 1 is George W. Bush. Given all the body of work he had to handle during his presidency the act of War , acts of God, 8 years of none stop catastrophes. He lead us well and shall be missed! #2 Jimmy Carter great humanitarian #3 George H. W. Bush . President Clinton would not be on my list as a great president, probably fun at a dinner party but as leader not impressed.

Bill Clinton was by far the best and no doubt there will be little argument that “W” was/is/ will be the worst President in US History. Who falls in between the two matters little. Our guy Obama has a really tough job ahead of him and I think he is the only one in the line up that can begin to tackle the mess W leaves.

Bill Clinton was the smartest and best President of these four. I would put Jimmy Carter next, not because he was any good but because George the first and George the last were so bad.
I am excited for our country now that
Barak Obama is poised to take office. I have great hope for his leadership.

We, as a country, can not be managed by a worse president than the one we have now. As a country, we can only go up from here. George W. managed to turned back the clock on us as a civilization and a country. The biggest failures were the presidents which created the BIGGEST DEBTS!
The current Bush is the absolute worst.
Next was his father.
Then Clinton
And Carter was the president whom added to the USA’s debt.

1. Bill Clinton – Left the country in great shape, created millions of new jobs, was loved around the world and helped to make the US respected as well. One of the better decades in the 20th century was under President Clinton.
2. George H.W. Bush – Showed leadership skills and decision making. Was not afraid to buck the popular trend. Made some mistakes in the first Gulf war.
3. Jimmy Carter – Showed lack of character and leadership skills. The Iran hostage situation was a mess. He did promote many worthy causes after leaving office.
4. George W. Bush – Miserable failure of a president. Has run the country into the ground and lied to get us into a war that we should not be in. Undoubtedly will go down in history as one of, if not the worst president in the history of the country.

Posted by: PDXBimmerboy | January 8, 2009, 3:23 am 3:23 am

1) Bill Clinton – did a great job for the whole USA & our image around the world.
2) Jimmy Carter – an underrated president who has always been an honorable man & a great humanitarian.
3) George H. W. Bush – respected the UN & international law regaring the 1st Gulf War. Problems with a recession as well as being involved in the Iran/Contra Scandal.
43rd) George W. Bush – the worst president in the history of our nation… he ignored the warning signs prior to 9/11; he lied us into an illegal & unjust war in Iraq which is costing us the lives as well as the mental health of our military personnel;
he & his administration outed an undercover CIA agent (which is a treasonable offense); he has pushed through legislation which has cost the American People their civil liberties & their privacy… oh, & his economic policies have brought our nation to economic collapse… not for his cohorts … but for the rest of the American People…etc., etc., etc.

2. Clinton was a very close second-really a tie. He tried to do what was best for the people and was stuck with persecution and obstructionists.
3. George H. Bush looks good now after we’ve endured his son.
4. George W. was the worst in history. The suffering of average Americans, the planet and the citizens of countries he decided to attack is criminal. He took a country left in pretty good shape and destroyed it. “W” is phony Christian.

#4. George W. Bush
By far, Jimmy Carter has become our greatest living president. No president in recent memory has done so much since his presidency than President Carter. The man founded the Habitat For Humanity and The Carter Center. He has won the Noble Peace Prize and has authored nearly 30 books SINCE leaving the White House. This president has saved millions of lives in Africa and there’s talk of a possible 2nd Noble Prize in medicine if he eradicates the Guinea Worm which it looks like they’re on the verge of doing. President Carter has flown throughout the world to monitor democracies through observations of elections through The Carter Center. He is intimidated by no country in this quest for peace and what is righteous. To me, his two greatest books are Our Endangered Values and Palestine, Peace Not Apartheid. These books put into clear, convincing, and understandable reading our problems in our U.S. society and the Holy Land from an American Christian’s perspective.

Jimmy Carter – done more for the world and poor people than any of the others.
Bill Clinton – Left the country with a budget surplus, amazing!
George Bush Sr.
and worse by several orders of magnitude
George W. Bush – whose goal was to increase the use of oil and generate massive profits for his oil friends.

“carter was the worst-impotent needed an erection injection especially on the hostage crisis.bush 41 was bad- needed cialis because viagra didn’t give him the balls to finish the job with “sad-damn” as he pronounced it.clinton needed no artificial sexual aid except a phone and a ####.* he avoided any asexual decisions, like going after al-quida; the only decisive decisions he made were sexual in nature, especially when he had a rendezvous in the lincoln bedroom with one of his benefactors.”w” was honorable. although he has an obvious language learning disability, which is obvious to any speech patholgist, he compensated well, with strong aides surrounding him, thanx to his dad’s friends (baker). he will go down in history as the man who began the elimination of terrorism and treated them like an enemy nation, rather than just a cult. so i pick ‘”w”. A- for effort.you will be very disappointed in obama. he is a manchurian candidate. it is apparent to all he told harry reid to mind his own business re: chicago politics or he will lose his majority leader status. there is a wonderful stuttering program (21 days intensive) at walter reed army medical center. he should make that a priority. forget hawaii. obama will be a liability for the taxpayers and a disappointment to the citizens of the world. rush is intuitive. you should listen more often!!”

3. George W. Bush, #43
4. Carter
Odd that people forget how bad things were during the Carter administration. However, he really has redeemed himself with his humanitarian efforts AFTER his presidency. History can possibly treat Bush 43 kinder depending on the future of the Middle East.

1. George W. Bush – courageous and steadfast, did almost everything possible to protect U.S. from a second devastating terrorist hit since 9/11 except for his lack in protecting our borders. Let’s hope Barrack Obama understands and does what is absolutely necessary to keep us safe from harm in the homeland during his presidency.
2. Bill Clinton – charismatic worldwide

Bush 43 = Leader. He led by his convictions and did what he believed was genuinely in the best interest of our country and the world – even if it was unpopular. He didn’t necessarily FOLLOW public opinion just because it was popular.
Bush 41 = The most qualified of the bunch. Good man. Made some mistakes but did a decent job. Got blindsided by Ross Perot. Too bad.
Clinton = Self serving politician. The consummate follower. Followed his lust, followed money, followed power, followed the polls etc. To his credit, he was smart enough to stay out of the way of a growing economy. Benefited from a TOTAL world dominance thanks to Reagen…
Carter = Confused. Unprepared. He allowed our enemies to run circles around him. Fortunately he lasted only four years. That’s when radical muslims began to believe they can intimidate the US and we (and most of the world) are still paying for for his decisions/indecision.

Wow…. Not too hard to see who the Dems and Republicans are… And who the deuce can say Clinton inherited from dominance by Reagan… No, sorry, he helped create the the most prosperous time in American history without the help of Reagan… Did you forget that G.H.W.B inherited Reagan’s crap and got destroyed in the ’92 election by Slick Willy? And who can say Carter is the best? I’m not saying he’s the worst, but definitely not the best… You can’t give credit his job as president for his post-presidency humanitarian efforts….

Rating as sitting presidents
1. Clinton – left us with a surplus and imo, overall tried to do the right thing for the country and the people most of the time.
2. Bush I and Carter tie. Bush I had the foreign thing down tight and was intelligent. Carter was a man ahead of his time with his energy policy but the country was lagging decades behind him.
4. Bush II. Worst president that this country has EVER had. Catered exclusively and continually to big corporations, emptied the treasury and has basically reduced the American public to poverty/borderline 3rd world status, attacked the wrong country-a fact which some among us have never recognized or learned, coddified torture as an American policy and gave it his blessing, instituted spying on Americans in America something else the rightwing has never come to terms with, basically attacked our environment and dismantled consumer protections… Good riddance.
Presidential ranking post presidency?
1. Carter. He doesn’t just talk the talk, he walks it. I’ve learned to respect him a lot post presidency.
2. Clinton and Bush I. Another tie.
4. I realize this is a prediction but Bush II. Based on his job performance in office, statements, and general attitude, I don’t look for any improvement from him.

1. George W. Bush – An unwavering leader in the face of the most catastrophic disasters this country has ever faced.
2. G.H.W. Bush – A viable leader considering the shoes left by Ronald Reagan that he had to fill. But, failed to complete the overthrow of Iraq’s dictator ultimately leading to 9/11.
3. Jimmy Carter – Oversaw our country being thrown into double-digit inflation and interest rates that used to be illegal.
4. Bill Clinton – Proving that even a satanic immoral adulterous womanizing Arkansas hick can become president — a disgrace to the office and our country.

In order of my preference:
1. George H.W. Bush – somebody had to have the difficult job of following Ronald Reagan, and George Sr. was the man to do it. Thoughtful, studied and focused, helping to bring down the Berlin Wall and strengthing ties with Mikail Gorbachev were amazing feats.
2. George W. Bush/Bill Clinton tie – Bill Clinton was a stronger economic president but for different reasons than George W. was equally as embarrassing at home and abroad. George W. silenced Saddam Hussein forever and that cannot be underestimated. Hussein was a true international danger. No question, George W. gaffed during Katrina and the deficit is shocking, but he has been of much stronger character and hasn’t embarrassed his country or worse, betrayed his wife and children by his personal behavior. Mostly, it seems to me that George W.’s biggest problem may have been in having the wrong people around him – Cheney, Rumsfeld, etc.
4. Jimmy Carter – a wonderful man and post-presidential humanitarian, I have admired this man’s work since he left office. However, nice guys don’t always do well as President, and I think he really suffered by having the wrong people around him.

I Agree totally with Albert Haneck who said (amended):
1 Bill Clinton (best of Living “ex’s”)
2.George H W Bush
3 Jimmy Carter
4 George W. Bush (Worst of ALL ex Presidents)
I agree with the majority of historians who rank George W. Bush as the Worst President in History. Started with a surplus, ended with a historic deficit
Started a war in Irag costing a 3/4 Trillion dollars. Over 500,000 innocent Iraqs killed, and too many US military.
Because of foreign policy, U S loss of prestige throughout the world.
Constitutional Rights lost via Patriot Act. Worst Economic Crises since Great Depression. Has created greatest wealth desparity via tax cuts for the rich and deregulaton of business.

BEST TO WORST:
1. George H. W. Bush: He handled the first Gulf War really well. But he slipped on the issues of the economy.
2. Jimmy Carter: I was 12-years-old when he was elected. The thing that I remember most from his presidency is the hostage crisis in Iran, which cost him to be re-elected.
3. Bill Clinton: Although he didn’t get the U.S. into a war, and the economy wasn’t really bad, he did have a moral failing that got him impeached.
4. George W. Bush: Need I say anything? I was born, raised and still reside in Texas. In my opinion, he was a better governor than a U.S. President. I remember an elderly saying he voted for G. W. just to get him out of Texas.

1.George W
2.George H. W. Bush
3. Clinton
4. Carter
Carter may be a nice guy but he will go down as the worst president in the history. The inflation was the highest in the modern US history, along with high un-employment. there was the Iran hostage issue that he could not do anything. In fact, Ahmadinejad was one of the goons who captured the American and he is now back to create even bigger problem for the world. Carter gave away the Panama Canal — these are just the tip of the iceberg.
Clinton admin de-regulated Fannie Mae and Freddie MAC, with help from Chris Dodd and Barney Frank to give the morgage loans to people who cannot afford them; they planted the seeds of the current financial meltdown.

Best to Worst:
W Bush – It took a real leader to face opposition from all sides to win the war in Iraq.
H W Bush – won a war; no complaints.
Carter – more of a humanitarian than a leader, which is why he is accomplishing more now than in his presidency.
Clinton – worst ever. His lack of policy to hold the banking industry accountable led to their unchecked greed and the financial crisis of today. He is the one who said everyone should own a home. Great idea; bad policy to implement.

The worst= W. Bush. Undoubtedly he will be indicted overseas, and likely here in the US, for TORTURING detainees to DEATH. He should also be indicted here for TREASON for the Scooder Liddy/Valery Plame affair. His list of crimes & malfeasances is long.
The best…probably Clinton. Lots of things I didn’t like or found lacking but many successes.
I’d like to have voted for Carter as best since he seems to truly have great ideals. Unfortunately his presidency was largely sabotaged by Tip O’Neil and other Democrats and Carter just didn’t know how to get around them.

# 1 Bill Clinton
# 2 Jimmy Carter
# 3 Geo. H.W. Bush
And without a doubt in my mind George W. Bush is not only the worst President in recent times, but the worst President in the history of our country.

No doubt George W is a disgrace to our country and will be remembered as such for decades to come.Clinton is number one, then Jimmy Carter,George H.W.proved to be better than his own son.But he wasn’t the greatest either.

George W. Bush has been an amazing president despite wrong criticism. Bush has tried to do things, but democrats are sly foxes, who lie to get what they want. Democrats are only in Washington to party, not to get things done. George W. Bush has accomplished more in his presidency than Bill Clinton did in four years of his presidency. The only thing Clinton was good for was committing adultery in the oval office. George W. Bush has my full support and respect!

Bill Cinton – Smart, Thinking ahead to the future, compassionate, disappointing on his personal life – but forgiven, Making his retirement count to the greater good.
Jimmy Carter – Good at foreign relations, caring and compassionate but became President at a difficult time in our history and paid the price. Strong leader for setting a good example of unselfish giving and making a difference in the latter years of his life.
George H.W. Bush – Showed wisdom and concern for the world stage. Had the smarts to get out of the middle east. To tied to his business cronies and taking care of the rich.
George W. Bush – Disgusting! The worst President in 70 years. A true Herbert Hoover. When people mention his name in the decades to come the words another Herbert Hoover will come to mind.

I have to comment on “Joel’s” post. There are so many flaws in it that it is almost comical. It speaks of true right wing, conservative diatribe with predictable results.
First off, the comment that “Democrats are only in Washington to party” is ludicrous! What is this based on? Was it one big party during the 90′s when under the Clinton presidency, this country enjoyed one of the largest economic expansions in it’s history? Was the huge budget surplus that Clinton left because of partying? Also another history lesson is in order. Bill Clinton was president for 8 years not 4. And of course the comment “The only thing Clinton was good for was committing adultery in the oval office” is another example of puritan, Bible thumping mentality. What’s the old saying, something about “those without sin casting the first stone”? The rest of the world laughed at us for going so overboard about a personal issue.
If you want to talk moral degradation, look no further than George W Bush the person that Joel gives his “full support and respect.” How can you respect someone that created an unjust war that has killed thousands of Iraqi, American, and other lives? How can you respect someone for bankrupting America? For leaving this country in an economic mess? For making us hated around the world? For spying on American citizens and taking personal freedoms and liberties away? For lining the pockets of corporate America? This failed presidency has committed more “sins” than Clinton ever did. Thank God we have only a little more than a week left of this terror.

hey pdx “bummerboy”,
is your head up your rear-end?
try reading the wall street journal rather being hypnotized by msnbc — keith “soma” olbermann, et al.
did you ever hear the story about all the parts of the body who wanted to be boss? when the ass+hole applied for the job, all the parts of the body laughed so hard that they terminated their function. the moral: you don’t have to be a brain to be boss, just an ass+hole!!
that lesson, dear, was written for you. ignorance is bliss!
watch the socialist obama make your eyes close up from the tears you will shed! perhaps then you will reconsider your lack of ethical morality your parents forgot to instill in you when raising you!!

1. Bill Clinton (you can’t argue with unprecedented peace and prosperity and solving the problems as they came up);
2. George H.W. Bush (pragmatic problem solver, coalition builder, superb job on Gulf War I and foreign policy but lacking full grasp of economic and social ills);
As for Jimmy Carter, he could have been the NO.1 but he had a problem he couldn’t walk and chew gum at the same time, even though he helped the peace accords he forgot he had a country to run and completely ignored it.
George W. Bush; Where is Bin Ladin still….eleven days left Mr. President and the clock is ticking!
Where are the WMD’s Mr. President (Moron) the clock is ticking!
He is going to go down as the worst president ever, since Hurbert Hoover!

i can’t say that in theory Geogre W might have been trying to do what he believed was right, on some of his decisions…however you can only say he is purposely leaving an enormous mess for Pres.Obama to clean up out of pure spite…what else could it be?

Tonight on your show, you asked us, the viewers, how we thought George W. should spend his retirement. I have never before posted here, but i have had such disdain for him I felt like answering this question you had posed. In my opinion, George W. should spend the rest of his days in jail for war crimes. I understand prior to leaving office, he will have officially pardoned himself along with his crooked staff, thus protection him here in the USA. I have a feeling he will not be leaving the country anytime soon.
