Closing Arguments: The Long Bush Goodbye

A candid President George W. Bush met the White House press corps today for a final time. He reflected on a tumultuous eight years in office and looked ahead to life after the presidency. It was a remarkable moment. He was at times repentant; defiant; even funny. "I just can’t envision myself, you know, the big straw hat and a Hawaiian shirt sitting on some beach," Bush said. "Particularly since I quit drinking." So tonight, we ask you: How do you think President Bush should spend his time after he leaves office? Tell us what you think.

How about being locked up for the rest of his life as a war criminal? Of course, I wouldn’t want him to be lonely. Cheney should join him in the cell.

What should Bush do in his retirement?
Go to his local Hallmark Store and buy every note card he finds. Then start writing apologies to every American citizen he has hurt through war, greed, self-serving “leadership” and a complete disregard for our futures.

He should be waterboarded, have a bag put over his head, beaten and then all of his retirement money should be donated to help our debt. He and Cheney drove our country into the ground. Shamed us on the world stage. Destroyed the constitution and buried us in debt. Bush and Cheney both should go to jail and don’t forget Scooter.

Bush and Cheney should both be convicted and placed in prison. Cheney for being the brains behind this country’s problems, and Bush for being the jackass he was/is. Without the familys money and contacts GW could probably not even run a successful fruitstand. I’ll also bet he can’t fly an airplane by himself. Bernie

Posted by: Bernard Moore | January 13, 2009, 1:32 am 1:32 am

I agree, he should spend years in the slammer. But ultimately I think he’ll opt for spending a lot of time aboard some $250 million yacht overlooking a splendid Mediterranean seascape off the coast of some gorgeous Greek island with Cheney and all their Halliburton cronies. After all due to the Iraq war and the subsequent government reconstruction contracts, Cheney and all of his Halliburton cronies made off with more money than Madoff. Isn’t American a great land?–I thought so!!!

Although far from a great president, Bush should be thanked for preventing any more attacks on this country. Bush hating liberals are blind to reality and the facts. Let’s see what freedom of speech these hateful liberals have in 4 years under socialism.

I am so glad that you think that you have done no wrong. Did you forget that President Clinton lied to the American people about “never having sex with that woman” Oh, and also, he was impeached. The other thing, how dare you degrade a President who has done his best to protect this country and succeeded at that. Remember, you still have your freedom and we, who live on the most fortunate and wonderful country, the USA have not been attacked since 9/11. Who is responsible for that. George Bush. He may not have done everything right but he did the best he could with Democrats who fought and not to mention hated him every step of the way. I am neither Democrat or Republican but I do support our President and want him to succeed because if the President succeeds so do we and right now, I am doing just fine. I do not hate because a person is Democrat or Republican like you do, I just disapprove. So if George Bush in your eyes should go to jail, so should Bill Clinton for LYING under oath

Posted by: Jayne | January 13, 2009, 5:39 am 5:39 am

Bush has done lots wrong, including out of control spending, not handling the immigration issue, complete lapse of the southern border security issue, etc.
However, I predict a day soon that, after Obama has dismantled Gitmo and those freaks are allowed to run rampant throughout the world, destroys our present day security including but not limited to the CIA and other counter terrorism agencies, guts our military, etc. that attacks within this country will occur.
If attacks occur after Obama has performed the above actions, which will happen, then the blame rests solely upon Obama and his administration. And rightfully so. This will spell doom for Obama and his administration. I predict then that many Americans will then see that Bush maybe wasn’t as bad as they were lead to believe.
Don’t ever think that it can’t get worse, because it certainly can. And we will all be witness to it. Maybe sooner than we think.

Posted by: TxBoB | January 13, 2009, 6:56 am 6:56 am

I am very unhappy with a lot of things the Bush administration did over it’s 8 years(the worst being, he has turned Liberal over the last 6 months). But, does he need to go to jail? No, I don’t think so and as much as it will disappoint many of you liberals, it won’t happen.
Pres. Johnson esculated Vietnam into a very big mess and Pres. Nixon went right on with it killing more USA military and Vietnam Civilians then has happened in the Iraq war. They did not go to jail (well Nixon almost did, but it wasn’t over the war).
Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt was in charge when we lost 1’000s unpon 1’000s of troops invading Normandy, when it is argued that the invasion could have been accomplished with less US and British casulties. Actually, there were quite a few battles in WWII that have been argued were fought wrong.
Pres. Truman dropped the A. Bomb on Japan to end the war with Japan. A lot of arguments there.
Pres. Lincoln would not allow 7 Southern states secession from the USA and when trying to organize militia to force them back, 4 more states left the Union causing 1 of the biggest and bloodiest wars in American History.
Justified? I say most were. There are those that argue most were not. But, we did not put President’s in Jail.

Posted by: mike evans | January 13, 2009, 9:55 am 9:55 am

Oh, and to add to my post.
Clinton launched close to 100 missiles into Iraq over his 8 years in office.
Clinton also was in charge of the Somalia Black Hawk Down incident. (differing data on the number of Civilians killed) We all know the number of American Soldiers that died, and quite a few Somali militia died.
Justified? I thought so. Others thought not.

well, we know that he or cheney will not go to jail. why not let them work in new orleans with brownie and do some good. in their spare time they can work at Walter Reed or any other Veteran’s hospital so they can see what their greed has done. i’m ashamed now to say that i was for going after the terrorists, and stupidly thought we’d be going into Afghanistan full force not iraq. we have our wants and thoughts as to punishments for bush and cheny, but we have to be realistic. if they have a conscience maybe the rest of their lives will be spent thinking about all the people that was needlessly lost in both wars and see the images of the faces of the people who thought their leaders cared about them and would help.

Posted by: mary | January 13, 2009, 10:58 am 10:58 am

Mr. Bush has, on many occasions, insisted that his successor not allow Iraq to become a failure. That is an acknowledgement that he knows that his work of bringing democracy and freedom to the Middle East is not yet complete. Who better than he, then, to devote the remainder of his life to educating the people of Iraq as to the benefits of democratic government. He should move to Iraq where he could move among the people, directly spreading his message of democracy and freedom. And it is there that he should build his presidential library, as a center for promoting the ideals of freedom, liberty and religious tolerance. Only by doing so can he demonstrate his commitment to the ideals he proclaimed so passionately as president.

Great post Dennis. Intelligent and not quite as abusive as the others. Although I do agree that after his mission of attempted restoration of good will and democratic education, if he hasn’t already been executed, he should still be hung by his toenails, waterboard tortured, and then finally left out in the desert to die. They he can talk about “QUITTIN’ DRINKIN’” to anyone he wants, the lizards, the sandstorms etc.!

He has driven our country into the ground and now WE get to suffer for his stupidity. The man doesn’t have enough brains to fill a thimble. And, those he does have don’t seem to work. First, undergo a complete
neurological examination,
including an assessment for
Alzheimer’s. Then spend some
of his largesse on those he
has injured and killed. Let
him live in a home in
Baghdad without secret
service protection and with
and a couple of hours of
electricity daily. Let him
drive an Iraqi car, no armor
shielded Hummer or tank,
avoiding IEDs and sit in

He could give his presidential

He should be arrested, along with Cheney, Rumsfeld, Gonzales & several other co-conspirators.All of them should be sent to The Hague to be tried for war crimes. Let them all try to justify what they did there. If they can, they walk free. If not, the same fate that awaited the Nazi war criminals should be there’s as well.
What they did was not 1 iota different than what Hitler did when he invaded Poland. Like Hitler, they invented a lie in order to invade a country that had not commited one hostile act towards those that then invaded them.

I don’t think he should be jailed-that is way too good for him. No, in my opinion, he should spend some time in Iraq with no protection. After he came “home”-it would be interesting for Keith Olberman to have a 2 hour interview with him to ask him what he thought about the trip. I would also like to hear how he feels about what he has done to those countries that he ruined. (USA included!)
After, I agree with Frank (above) when he wrote “He could give his presidential
pension to the Iraqi families who have lost so much and retained so
little.” He really SHOULD give his pension to the Iraqi families and the families here who have lost so much due to his complete lack of leadership. What an idiot!!!

1.13.09 First of all, I commend your show as the “best” in late night news and always learn something interesting, albeit sometimes a little too celebrity driven for me. I will comment on Bush: He was the worst-case scenario of a right-wing Republican whose political operatives ‘stole’ the election and has been the most hypocritical lying ‘SOB’ who drained this country of its human and natural resources and will now retire (thank God) back in ‘bull-crap’ country with “blood on his hands” after the most infamous war we ever fought. I can only hope he takes to drinking again and hurts himself on a dirt-bike.
The only good thing he brought to the White House was Laura. I’ve never seen such a phoney-baloney President and he has got to rank near the bottom of list. Good-bye and good riddance…it will now take a generation to get our country back to its senses and recover from the worst economic crisis in our lifetime. I hold him and his buddies responsible for wrecking the economy and the country. We should file all charges against him and his cohorts.
Now God help us all in the years to come

It’s time for a new and candid probing media “investigation into everything political” that reflects the ‘self-serving’ interests of either party – this country has been lied to for so long from both Congress (‘earmarks) and the White (Lies) House (weapons of mass distraction). Shame on the news media for not going the extra mile to get to the bottom of the ‘mess we’re all in..’

As long as American soldiers remain in Iraq, Bush should be right beside them, with Cheney and Rumsfeld serving in whatever capacity Haliburton or Blackwater remains, and only outside the Green Zone, or better yet, all three should be required to personally visit each and every family of those losing a loved one in their illegal war!

I really cannot comprehend anyone comparing Bill Clinton’s lying about his sex life to what George W. Bush has done to this country. He is responsible for how badly we are viewed in the world, our economic crisis, lying to us about Iraq, and his total incompetence in every facet of his governance. And yet Bush believes the Democrats dislike him just to be mean spirited! Many of his own party condemn his presidency vehemently! He will be viewed as the worst president ever. Hopefully, our future voters will always look for a Barack Obama type and avoid a Bush (any Bush) type like the plague! In other words, we need SMART, not a beer drinking buddy! I believe that beer drinking bit was the only thing Bush ran on. Please let him pay for his crimes!

The Bush interview was an embarrassment. To think that he was the leader of the free world for 8 years is incomprehensible. The man reminds me of a drunken uncle who can’t form a coherent though. His comments rambled all over the spectrum. His remarks about Hurricane Katrina were ludicrus. What do you do with a dumb boob like him? Perhaps the best thing is to have him, like Nixon, just fade out of sight. Let the world go forward to a better fate.
Obama has his work cut out for him cleaning up Bushes’ mess. Of course, the Neocons don’t want him to succeed. They would rather have this country split wide open than admit that an African/American Democrat might be able to put this country back together.

repenting, and or stand in a booth, kinda like a fair’s traditional kissing booth, except we will call this one a “smacking” booth. make this one of the inauguration attractions. “step right up and smack an ass for charity!” 1 dollar per smack and all the proceeds go to; veteran relief, katrina victims, unemployement funds and aid…etc

I think he should spend it relaxing and enjoying his family for at least awhile. I’m sure he will feel like the weight of the world is off of his shoulders. I think that history will treat him very kindly. He kept us free of attack after 9/11 and none of us knows what goes into all of that with all the intelligence that has to be monitored. I think that Obama will have a new found respect for Bush as he realizes the burdens of the office. Bush will always have my respect and gratitude for continuing to do what he sincerely believed was the right thing even when it made him unpopular. If Clinton had done the right thing and not been playing around with women, 9/11 would not have happened because it is now documented that there were ample indications that 9/11 would happen during Clinton’s presidency and he did nothing. The whole economy problem dates back to Clinton; in particular the Freddie Mack, Fannie Mae mess. So Mr. Bush inherited a lot of garbage from people who were more interested in gratifying themselves than in taking care of our country.
One might think that I am a republican. I tend to vote that way but I have voted for a democratic presidential nominee and other democrotic offices when I thought they were the better choice.
The other problem that kept Bush on the unpopular list is the liberal media. They only reported one side of the story and that was colored by their own personal biases. That is not journalism.
So, hopefully, in the future, Bush will feel inclined to accept offers to speak and share the difficulties a President faces and the things that went on behind the scene that he could not speak of at that time for national security reasons.

Karen:
Got it. Bush good and history will be kind, Clinton and Liberal Media, bad.
Brainwash complete.

Bush and Cheney escaped impeachment only because of the gutless Democrats in Congress. Like so many have already said, they should be hauled before an international tribunal and tried for war crimes. After conviction, they should spend the remainder of their lives at hard labor, perhaps rebuilding some of the devastated cities in Iraq. And of course, their personal fortunes should be confiscated and given to the surviving family-members of US veterans and to the thousands of Iraqi children now being raised in orphanages.
In the long run, though, their worst crime may well prove to be the eight critical years that were lost in the effort to reverse global climate disruption, as a direct result of their cynical and greedy devotion to the profits of the oil industry. There really is no punishment that could possibly come anywhere near being commensurate with the potential destruction of human civilization in the lifetime of our children or grandchildren.

I’m glad he’s gone. When 911 hit he waited too long to do anyhting about it. He still hasn’t gotten that SOB after 8 years . The CIA had a chance B/4 and they blew it. I’m a Vietnam veteran I support our troops.Bring them home let them defend our borders like other countries do. Take notice how many other countries are loosing their loved ones in this worthless war? Answer none. Oh excuse me England. The people in the middle east don’t like us. We spent billions on them for what. Look at our economy.People need jobs, housing, medical care retirement, social security.Put the money in the American peoples hands they’ll put it back into the economy. At least they’ll live to talk about it.
As far as Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and the Car Manufactures you screwed up you eatit. Not the Tax Payers
Now with Bush Gone lets see how much money the Govt saves. All the people of Our great country that thought he was so great didn’t even look outside the box.
Now we have Obama “God help the USA”

PS – It’s really a shame that the folks at ABC & Nightline undoubtedly won’t have the guts to report on the overwhelming sentiment that has been expressed here in response to their question. Just as they ignored the very substantial support for impeachment for the last four years, they will also take a pass on the issue of Bush & Cheney as war criminals. After all, “It wouldn’t be polite.”

President Bush should go out to American communities that are in economic disaster and help homeless and unemployed Americans harmed by his and his administration’s policies. Why don’t you visit Arizona, especially Tempe and Mesa and offer to help people find a place to stay and get a job so we can survive and have food, shelter, clothing, which we are badly in need of . How about that Mr. Bush?

He should go back to Texas to clear brush and not show his face until he has cleared all brush out of Texas.
This has been the worst eight years this country has experienced. Bin Laden picked the right President to help him destroy this country.

I don’t know if we should be too hard on him. George and Bill were only following the directives of AIPAC. But I would still like more information on how 7 World Trade Center collapsed on 9/11 when it was not hit by a plane.

I am so not surprised by the stupid comments on here. I believe Bush did the best he could are you kidding me. Do you think he just made all the decisions and made these mistakes by himself. Well look into your wonderful government will you.I am amazed to hear such foolishness. You just want to blame the crap on one person. THE WHOLE GOVERNMENT IS foul. And now you idiots think your special guy Obama is going to save the world. What a joke. Wait till I later read you fools on him. I do not even say he is our president. Evil. It is amazing how you all say such foolish crap. The twin towers did not happen are you even real. God help this stupid country. We really deserve what we are in for. I feel bad for you delusional idiots. My God what comes out of your mouths. shameful just shameful. You all act like this has been the only war in history or the only mistakes ,how quick you forget. Maybe get the crap out of your heads and asses and start really thinking for your selfs. We will have your government doing all that for us in just a bit so I guess we won’t have to worry about it. There is a reason he is called “Mr.” President, and not King George. If you do illegal things you should go to jail. George Bush belongs in jail. In addition, all the people now sitting pretty from their war investments, deregulation, etc. should go to hell – I don’t believe in hell – too bad… maybe I’ll start just for them.

I think that Bush should spend his free time taking classes on Politics (Right way), caring about his own people and less on helping the refugees and learning Economics. I hope that he will keep the rest of the Bush family from ever getting involved in politics( The Country has had enough.

You all above,
wait a little and when, in the coming years, you’ll see how presidents will be elected, you will realize that Bush was one of the greatest presidents, a man of principles, integrity and dignity, who loved his country, a man with faith, a man who stood by his promises, HE KEPT THE COUNTRY SAFE. DO YOU NEED ANOTHER DISASTER TO WAKE UP? What is the matter with you, with all that garbage you through out?
