Eight Children, After Six: Anything Wrong With That?
To some people, the news about the octuplets — that the California woman who gave birth Monday was already a mother of six — raises troubling questions. Medical ethicists and fertility experts want to know how she was counseled, early on. Was the woman made aware that so many babies might result from this pregnancy? Were guidelines followed in her care? Others question the responsibility of the mother herself. Can she possibly provide adequate care for 14 children? Still others say, flatly, Who are we to question a mother about her private life? And are not all children blessings, to be celebrated and treasured? What do you think? VOTE: Should doctors have allowed this woman to undergo fertility treatment in the first place?

Either award custody to the fertility clinic Drs. or make the clinic pay child support whilst taking away all of the kids and splitting ‘em all up for adoption.

I think that the mother could have lied about how many children she had already.

We are!

Who is paying for the medical costs associated with this birth? Is California’s welfare system going to support these people.
Posted by: Rosalie Cicogna | January 30, 2009, 6:50 pm 6:50 pm
I understand it is ultimately her choice, but my main concern is am I paying for these children? I should hope that she is fianially stable enough in this rough economy to support these children. Otherwise I would be very angry to find out that she is recieing state or federal aid that we are all paying for.
Posted by: nt | January 30, 2009, 6:50 pm 6:50 pm
The fertility doctors were out of line. This is a single mom with 6 kids. Now who will pay for all 14 kids? We will, with our already too high taxes and give away programs!
Posted by: liztuba | January 30, 2009, 6:50 pm 6:50 pm
OF COURSE this is a medical catastrophe. Those kids need months, probably years of expensive, specialized medical care – who pays for that? And if they survive, they’ll need years of special education. Who pays for that? Taxpayers, of course. WHEN is this madness gonna end?
Posted by: Frank Hudson | January 30, 2009, 6:51 pm 6:51 pm
Who paid for all the fertility treatments? News says the grandfather filed bankrupcy last year, no father in sight for the other 6? Who is going to pay all the hospital bills? Taxpayers I guess as always. Go get a job and off the welfare rolls.

“Either award custody to the fertility clinic Drs. or make the clinic pay child support whilst taking away all of the kids and splitting ‘em all up for adoption.”
Could not be better said !! It’s scary to think what the ultimate burden to taxpayers will be with this one….six kids already??!?? I think they confused
fertility with sterilization here….

Why would any fertility Dr do fertility treatments on a woman who already has 6 children. This is more than unethical it is downright criminal. thye should lose their licence to practice medicine in any state!

I’m all about being a parent, I have a beautiful son myself. My only concern is that this single mom of 6 already living at home with her parents now is a mom of 8 more. Who pays for this? Tax payers, does she have a job….there are so many problems with this story. She has a nanny? I just don’t understand it all, its so perplexing.
Posted by: momof1 | January 30, 2009, 6:51 pm 6:51 pm
I would like to know who pays for the healthcare for these babies considering fertility treatments are voluntary. I also want to know if Social Services is going to pay a visit to this woman’s other 6 children to ensure they are not being neglected. To seek fertility treatments for your 7th child is an indication that this woman was OFF her rocker, and the physicians’ are clearly guilty of ethical malpractice. I’m tired of “political correctness” taking the place of common sense.
Posted by: L Thurman | January 30, 2009, 6:52 pm 6:52 pm
I don’t think a single woman with 6 children should be given access to in vitro fertilization. There’s something about this case that’s vaguely obscene.
Posted by: Maria Hudgins | January 30, 2009, 6:52 pm 6:52 pm
i think those fertility doctors should
support those children, or else they pay all the medical expenses, because
i have a feeling tax payers will end up
footing the bills if you know what i

What is going on in this country? Who currently supports the six children this woman already has? Who is paying for the births and later the medical bills and upbringing of these children?
Posted by: Karen | January 30, 2009, 6:52 pm 6:52 pm
Not only is thie a question of money but it is question of physical and emotional support. How will she ever be able to emotionally support all 14 children?! And this is simply irrisonsible.

Who or which government agency is going to be paying for all their medical treatment before they even get a chance to go home?
Posted by: costly | January 30, 2009, 6:52 pm 6:52 pm
I am amazed at how quickly the media went from love affair to judgmental ninnies when the mother’s life and financial situation came to light. No matter what happened or why, there are eight new people in this world, and making their parents into monsters (though most of the criticism is heaped on the mother alone, thank you, Patriarchy) isn’t going to help them or us. No one is freaking out that the Duggars are still having babies and making money off of it.

The doctor(s) should have their licenses revoked. Apparently, this woman has no problem getting pregnant. It seems that we the taxpayers will be the ones “raising” these children who did not ask to be brought into this world.

The Dr. who implanted the embryos should have his medical license revoked…Why was this mother even considered for infertility with six children?

The fertility clinic should be sued for malpractice. Already six children? Then no need for implantation.

I am appalled at this event.
How could a woman with 6 children who lives with her parents and has declared bankruptcy in all good conscience have in vitro fertilization?
The doctor who helped with this should be disbarred!!!!!!!!!
I guess they expect the state to pay all their extensive bills. . .
Doesn’t sound like anyone in this scenario has very good common sense.
Posted by: Bonnie | January 30, 2009, 6:53 pm 6:53 pm
If she has the money to have fertility treatments, then we can assume that she has enough to take care of her kids….as long as she isn’t on public assistance, it isn’t anyone’s business but hers. Furthermore, how her family members handle their money doesn’t neccesarily mean she will do the same.

To me, it seems ridiculous and someone has sawdust in their brains. Who will pay for these kids, me and you and foodstamps, and other freebies.

Yes there is something wrong with eight babies. It’s irresponsible of the clinic for allowing this. Who is paying for the delivery, hospital and ongoing cost?
Posted by: carol | January 30, 2009, 6:53 pm 6:53 pm
I think this woman must be just having babies to collect child welfare! How else can you explain a “single” woman undergoing fertility procedures when she already has six children?? This is disgusting! She is not being fare to her parents and most of all to these new babies and her other six. Where is the husband? This just sounds like the “puppy farms!”
Posted by: Dottie | January 30, 2009, 6:53 pm 6:53 pm
I question the doctors who administered the advanced fertilization of the eggs that were implanted. I wonder if they looked at the patient history and had any thought about if she was fit to take care of even one more child when she already had six more at home. What’s even more troubling to me is that they would ask her to even think of aborting the children when it was well past time that this option was even remotely acceptable. All in all, I think both parties are to blame for this but I don’t think ethics should be taken into account. This is a personal matter and no matter what the birth of a child is beautiful no matter what.

I think the fertility doctors as well as the mother should be held accountable to all tax payers who are probably going to be paying for all the care of all 14 children. I have no doubts we are looking at years of food stamps, state health care, welfare and other government help. I for one am tired of paying for things like this which could have been prevented when people who work hard all their lives can’t get help or thier own social security they paid in when they become disabled.
Posted by: C Lee | January 30, 2009, 6:54 pm 6:54 pm
My question is this – why in the world does a single mother want 14 kids? I guess because we, the taxpayers, will pay for this “breeder’s” kids the rest of their lives. Sounds like we need some sterilization for this woman.

1.33,single,6 kids, no home, no income..what kind of doctor would help her get pregnant with one child?
2.the mother nor her parents should be allowed to keep these babies..they are up to something; there is something deeply disturbed about these people.
3. these babies are a bottomless money maker for this woman and her parents.thats alot of welfare from california gov.
4. the ultimate ‘come to america and bleed us dry’…the mother and parents are not even born here…
this is just wrong.no one can give 14 children the time and attention all children need and deserve. everyone involved should lose their licenses.this is no miracle..only 14 kids destined for disaster. i guess in california anything really does go!

Why is this anyone else’s buisiness? If the woman is happy with her babies (like she should be) then leave her alone! If we are going to start telling people just how many children they can have, then we are not Americans and definately not free people.

I cannot even imagine the doctors involved in all of this. Doe this woman even have a husband? If shes living with mom it sounds like she couldnt take care of the children that she already had. This matter raises many ethical, legal and moral questions. Given that the mother already has 6 children and a questionable financial background, it smacks of a “15 minutes of fame” deal. There is no way this family can properly support 14 children and it is shameful that the mother did not take the advice of medical professionals and abort all but 1 or 2 fetuses. Of course, the implants of 8 should never have been done in the first place. A slippery slope indeed and the blame can be spread around. Long overdue is taking personal responsibility for one’s actions – obviously lacking in this case. Hopefully ethicists will discuss this matter and stricter guidelines developed as a result.

I heard she is a single mother of 6 kids I Guess she is on welfare and now the tax payers are going to pick up the million dollar hospital bill. I think she should pay her own medical and the kids medical bill not the taxpayers. The doctors who made the fertalization should be hel responsible for this also, not the taxpayers. She wanted this let her pay for this out of her own pocket.

Question: Why doesn’t the U.S. have laws against implanting multiple embryos? Answer: Because of the medical lobby.
Even if she was able to financially support 14 children, it would still be immoral to have that many. Unfortunately it is not likely that every individual can be stopped from acting irresponsibly but we certainly could make it illegal for medical professionals to facilitate this type of behavior…..if we really wanted to do that.

Before I became pregnant (after 12 years of marriage) I did everything to make myself as healthy as possible. It too my husband and me 2 years to get pregnant but I refused to go for fertility treatment. When my son was born, he was beautiful and healthy until he was diagnosed with Autism at age 3 1/2. I did everything I was supposed to do to have a healthy child and yet, I still had a child with a diability. I love him dearly but when my husband and I wanted more children, WE ADOPTED! When I felt the pangs for another baby, we GOT A DOG! Whatever happened to ZPG? My son with Autism is now 18. I have lost thousands of dollars in salary, pension, etc. and spent thousands of dollars for his care. It would not be moral or ethical for me to have another child knowing the potential for more children with disability. The doctors this woman went to should have asked more questions. Where were her parents in allowing her to do this? There are better ways to get your 15 minutes of fame. What will be the long term effects of the premature birth of 8 babies? How much will this cost for them to get all the help they need for the rest of their lives? And I pray somebody makes sure this woman doesn’t do this again!

In this case:
First, the fertility clinic should be made to pay for all costs, medical and all other future support, for these eight children. Otherwise, we, the taxpayers will be paying for them. ENOUGH already.
Second, these eight children should be made wards of the state and placed with adoptive parents.
Third, the woman’s tubes should be tied IMMEDIATELY.

Once these babies are home, I am sure Social Services will be at the door. My brother has 3 kids under 4, and finds that difficult, and he and his wife work Full Time.
Unless the explanation is a good one, this was ethically wrong.

Why does a woman who has 6 children NEED fertility drugs? Where were the doctors brains? In their wallets? I think this is a shame that this was done. The people responsible should all have to explain why it happened. Who will care for all these children, especially if they have medical and social problems? Why all of us, of course.

This should have never happend in the first place. The woman is a single lady (that is what I heard anyway) with six children already, What is wrong with the clinic who implanted her. She should never have been approved for IVF in the first place. With all the problems in America right now, how is this lady going to be able to feed, cloth, house, etc. all these children. Another welfare recipient?
Posted by: aliencajun | January 30, 2009, 6:57 pm 6:57 pm
No one is questioning whether or not children are blessings. However if we put the kids first in this situation, what kind of life do they have ahead of them? If they can truly afford to support them all and raise them up right more power to them. If not, the kids are the ones to suffer.
Oh and now that she has had all of these kids, I hope she is not expecting any help from anyone else, including governmental help. If it gets to that the kids should be taken and placed with people who can afford to give them the love and support they need.

It seems odd to me that if a person or couple wishes to adopt a child who is already alive and in need of a loving, nurturing family, the are required to have home studies, complete applications and jump through countless hoops, but if they wish to have fertility treatments and end up bringing multiple children with learning and developmental issues, they only need to be able to write a check, or have health coverage that will cover the expense. It makes me wonder if these fertility clinics aren’t just seeing the dollar signs.

No single parent with six children should be allowed to undergo treatment that produces more babies. Who is going to pay for the astronomical medical bills and daily care for these babies?
No doubt it will fall on American taxpayers. Care for premature babies averages one million dollars per child for hospital treatment. The bigger question is although it may be legal, is it morally and ethically correct to inplant this many embryos into a woman who already has more children than she can care for. Surley i’m not the only one who sees this as madness on the mothers part. also, what did the doctors get out of this besides lots of money?

Is this not one of the reasons our ecomony is the way it is today. This person and their family should be denied any kind of government assistance FOREVER!!! The doctors that performed the procedure should lose their license and have to pay for the children’s medical bills. Instead they will sit back and collect government money and never think that they are a large contributer to our failing ecomony!

I didn’t like how they suggested that it would have been better for the children if they had not been born when they said that the children will have a difficult beginning.
We seem to see more and more in media the suggestion that unless you are at least middle class you don’t deserve to be born because of your heritage.
Just a lot of speculation here, we want to believe that this mother is being malicious or the doctors are. But what if the lady just wants a big family. Perhaps she chose this fertility clinic so she would have a large number of children. Maybe she wants a large family, it wasn’t too long ago when large families were common and welcome, before personal wealth and prosperity overrode our desire to raise a healthy family…

2.) Every doctor and Nurse involved in this fertiliztion should be stripped of their licenses and brought up on charges of Endangering the Welfare of a Child. I will pray for these innocent babies and the soul of their mother.

1. If she is only 33 years old and has a 6, 5, 4, 3, and twin 2 yr olds already why does she need fertility clinics to get pregnant?
2. In vetro and all fertility treatments of this magnitude are extremely pricey. WHO PAID the fertility clinic for this procedure? And what the heck – don’t treatments like this come with at least a modicum of counselling???

I am both furious and sickened by the birth of the “litter” of 8 babies to the California couple. With so many millions without health insurance, I’d like to know who will pay the millions to take care of these premature infants. My guess it will be you and I. Too bad we can’t stick the fertility doctors who let this happen with the bill. What’s wrong with these people, anyway? They already have 6 children!!!! I’d like to know what their yearly income is. If they’re filthy rich, then good luck to them. If not, shame on them. Actually, shame on them anyway.

IF A PESON BELEIVES THY CAN AFFORD 14 CHILDREN. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS. LONG AGO FAMILIES DID IT WITH LESS INCOME THAN THIS FAMILY. MY GRANDMOTHER HAD THIRTEEN CHILDREN. YEA IT HARD 8 SMALL CHILDREN BUT AT LEAST THE FAMILY SEEMS TO BE WOKING. AND AFMILY TOGATHER. PICK PON TE ONES WHO HAVEONE OR TWO THEN BEAT THE O STARVE THEM BECAUSE THEY WANT DRUGS OR ACHAHOLL. LEAVE THI FAMILY TO LOVE HER FAMILY. I HAVE AN EX THAT FILED BANK RUPCY 3 TIMES JUST TO AFFORD CHISTMAS .

One should ask the question who is paid for this procedure and who is paying for these children. A single mother with 6 children living with her parents probably indicates some one who does not have a good paying job to be able to support herself and family and that includes health benefits. ( Which by the way , a private health insurance plan problably wouldnt be paying these costs or have a limited $ amount to spend). California residents should be asking if their Medicaid program supported this procedure and now these 8 children and if the answer is yes, someone needs to have their head examined especially in light of the finincial problems the state finds itself in. It is amazing to see what state Medicaid programs cover as health care when you or I as private citizens cannot get our health plans to pay for .

I’m so angry over this. She’s unmarried, unemployed, and living at home with her parents and 14 children. Ultimately who is going to be paying to raise these children . . . We are!
I have only one child because I can’t afford to have any more . . . because of people like her who have babies like puppies and count on the state to support them! This is so wrong. It makes my blood boil to think about. How dare she!

The last couple that had eight children did it for the money, gifts, and free college educations that well-meaning, but misguided, people gave them. Seeing this, I believe this woman decided to take her shot and become famous and rich. If she has some compulsion to bear a world’s record number of children, she is unbalanced and not to be encouraged. She is using helpless infants selfishly. Can she raise these children, pay all the costs? I doubt it. Who will get the bill?

What is wrong with this woman. Ok Ok Ok I get it. Living with mom and dad, no husband, = welfare life. Apparently she was getting kicked off of welfare so this is her way of keeping and getting more from the US tax payers.
She should of went out and got a job like the rest of us tax payers instead of having more children to live on welfare. That is what is wrong with our system already. To darn many hand out to those who can work and are just lazy. And not enough help to those who really really need help. Instead of cutting the welfare to the lazy asses that do not want to get out of bed or get off the drugs or booze. They are cutting the support to the elderly and handicapped. What is up with that. The system is so broke that I dont see any fixing it. Until people start raising their kids the right way. They keep saying that the children are our future. If people dont start raising their children right then, we are going to be in a bad state. Matter of fact in this womans position with six kids already. She should have been spayed after the sixth one.

Eight Children!!!!!!!!!!
1.Where is her husband, boyfriend of the first 6 kids and the 8 kids?
2.Who paid for fertility treatments (they are not cheap)?
3.Who is paying for the hospital stay?
4. Who will be buying her a house?
5. What type of health insurance does she have?
Yes we can question this because we will be paying!

A farmer living in the 30′s probably would have thought he was blessed because they would have been his future farmhands.
I don’t know what doctor in his right mind would want to bless a woman with more children when she already has 6.
I thought the fertility treatment was for those who haven’t had any children.

The fact that people are creating embryos only to be frozen or aborted is immoral in the first place, and this should have never happened.
I can understand the desire to help couples who are infertile, but but we have no business creating multiple embryos in a laboratory knowing that most will never see the light of day.
I pray that those who practice this will repent, and I pray that all those who have been created this way will somehow be freed from their frozen prison.

It is incredible that any ethical facility would provide fertility treatment to a woman who already has six children. In whose best interest is it to add eight more children to her family? How will she provide properly for 14 children?

I would like to know what this mother does for a living? Is she on welfare and if so, how could she be allowed to have this many children? Seems to me that the Doctors were not doing their jobs by not asking questions first! I do believe that all children are a blessing, if you are the one supporting them, and not your community!

This woman should be arrested! The children taken to loving homes that will help build these children into happy adults. The medical staff-doctors, nurses, etc. that helped this to happen should be arrested and all medical licenses removed. This woman is either selfish or suffering from some sort of psychological ailment. Her arrest should be done based on getting her treatment, and eventually cured. These children are in jeopardy because of MANY egos!!!!
God Bless Those Children!!!!!

My God! What an act of incredible stupidity, not only by the woman, but by those at the fertility clinic! The clinic needs to be shut down, the guidelines tightened, and the counseling improved. Also, the woman needs to be counseled now to allow for the state to take custody of these poor babies and place them for adoption to families who will love and care for them….one to each family. These babies deserve better!!! (Also, I don’t understand the comment from “Thinking” which refers to the Republican Party????)

I am amazed at all of you. Why get caught up in the drama? Multiple births occur all the time. Granted the circumstances here are a bit unusual. What were they thinking? 6 children all under the age of 7!! This woman was not having any kind of fertility problem! I am concerned that these children were forced into a single parent home (no grandparents are not parents). In what is obviously not a financially plush household, this family will more than likely turn to the state of California to support these children and the 6 others. These children will have a difficult time while growing up. It is a heartbreaking story. I am a single mother of 1 7 year old and constantly struggle with making sure that I give him enough attention, how can you support your children and give 14 enough personal attention. Oh that’s right California is going to support them so I guess there is nothing to worry about.
Posted by: what were they thinking? | January 30, 2009, 7:05 pm 7:05 pm
-were the first 6 kids born through fertility treatment also?
- Who and where is the father?
- Why was some one with 6 kids, no husband, no money, no income, living with parents be allowed to have fertility treatment. These factors won’t even allow anyone to adopt a SINGLE kid.
- How did she afford raising 6 kids and fertility treatments?
- Sure, she is entitled to have as many kids she wants but thats acceptable only if she is willing to pay for them personally and not by tax payer’s money. The later makes it a public issue and not just a personal!
Posted by: Curious Citizen | January 30, 2009, 7:05 pm 7:05 pm
This woman should have been sterilized not receive fertility drugs and the doctor should be disbarred. It sounds like she must be mentally unstable but her doctor should not be. All of her children, including the ones she already has, will pay all of their lives for the unbelievable stupidy of their monther and her doctor. So will the taxpayers.

I don’t understand… we get mad when women have abortions and we get mad when women DON’T have abortions? And did anyone ask this of the Gosselin family from TLC’s Jon and Kate Plus 8? And finally, should we just let the government make our reproductive decisions for us like they do in China? I am beginning to wonder if this woman’s race/economic status/whatever else we decide may not make someone a fit parent has anything to do with this. I am in favor of a woman’s right to choose to have or not have however many children she wants.

Why does a single woman with six children need fertility treatments??? She saw a way to get more money and support from the government, and took advantage of it, as most people do. All that does is cut out the people that need it too, but are told, they don’t qualify, when in reality they do. They may not have 14 kids, but the still need help. She should be made to support all of her children by herself. And what kind of fertility clinic would implant like that? They need to have their license revoked. Since we, the tax payers will have to support those children, we have all the rights in the world to question her private life
Posted by: Penny Crawford | January 30, 2009, 7:06 pm 7:06 pm
Why did this person go to a fertility clinic in the first place? Aren’t six children enough? Who is going to pay the medical bills? I hope it’s not us taxpayers. We need to be more mindful of overpopulation of our planet and less selfish about our own needs.
Posted by: Janice | January 30, 2009, 7:06 pm 7:06 pm
I am not sure that this woman is single…as I do not recall hearing that. I have to believe that there is a huge difference ethically in “natural” pregnancies vs. those that are “planted” or induced through some from of fertility enhancement. I feel this is the dilemma in privacy that has been mentioned. I will be angered if this becomes a tax funded family. There is no longer a right to privacy when the “state” gets involved in the rearing of children by irresponsible behaviors and decisions. Also, if there are ethics standards on the books regarding fertility treatments AND those standards were not followed; then I would hope that the clinic that was responsible should face serious consequences!

My husband & I went through fertility treatments. I specifically remember, both me & my husband speaking to a doctor before starting about the possibilty of multiple births and how we would be able to care for them. I was also told no more than 3 embryos would be transplanted back inside me. Is anyone going to ask the hard questions? Who is going to pay for medical treatment? Does this woman have health insurance? What kind of doctor would create this situation with a woman who does not even have a husband. Reports are she lives with her parents. So she is not even responsible enough to provide for the children she already has! Where is the accountability? The fertility clinic should be made to take on the expense for these childen since they created the situation. The taxpayers are NOT responsible and taxpayer money should not go to support this family!
Posted by: Ginny M | January 30, 2009, 7:06 pm 7:06 pm
Unbelievable that this woman would even conceive a thought of having additional children. Of course, since the bankrupted State of California is paying for them, which undoubtedly they will be forced to do because of the financial costs, these new 8 kids probably won’t cost the mother much at all monetarily … in fact, is she already getting a check each month for the 6 who are at home? And, who underwrote the cost for the infertility … a mother of 6 must have difficulty making ends meet, especially since she is living with her parents. Is she an American? The 8 new babies are.

We have no way of knowing if these will be taxpayer dollars or not, because we don’t have enough details, just wild speculation, which most of the commenters seem to enjoy a great deal. Funny how worried we are about a few hundred thousand dollars, when Wall Street vampires have sucked billions out of government coffers in the past few months.
How ridiculous and blackhearted to suggest taking the children away from her. The foster care system is overloaded and underequipped as it is. What is best for the children? Many families have large numbers of children for religious reasons, and we’re not ripping those children from their mothers.

Its oncontionable that a fertility clinic let this women with six other children ,with obiviously no husband in the picture, have other children by implanting embrios. What kind of counceling did she get and who is paying for this procedure? You mean she has the money to go through this procedure and support six other children? Why did she need other children? She was not a candidate in the first place. She already had six children !!! If the state comes in and takes care of these children, the taxpayers get it again for someone who is acting irresponsible. The clinic should be held responsible also for allowing this to happen. Something doesn’t ring right on this situation anymore. We don’t know the whole story. Its too bad the kids will suffer in the long run by perhaps being wards of the state and perhaps have many medical problems. Who’s going to pay?

There is overwhelming dissent for in-vitro fertilization for this woman.
Pros: none
Cons:
* This woman already has 6 previous
young children. This places ethical
issues to the forefront.
* She is a single Mom: no father in the
picture
* Her parents previously filed for
bankruptcy, placing into question her
financial support
* There are only two people to raise
all these children: mother and
grandmother
* Cost: infertility costs tens of
thousands of dollars, and caring for
8 premature neonates can cost an
additional hundreds of thousands of
dollars. This is before the children
make it home!
* Medical: why would an infertility
specialist inseminate a woman who
already has 6 children. Was this
information available. It should have
been. Why were 8 embryos implanted
instead of 2. Asking the woman to
consider an abortion after all the
embryos have taken raises additional
ethical concerns. There needs to be
oversight in the process.

I don’t understand why a women with six small children under the age of 10 would need to go to a fertility clinic. Was this person counseled? Did she talk to a psychiatrist? Should her mental state have been questioned? Why did she want to have another baby when she’s living with her parents? It seems that the fertility clinic only didn’t think about the patient’s well-being….

I have a couple of questions about this. Why in the world would any woman (apparently single, living with Mom & Dad)who already has 6 kids undergo fertility treatments and procedures to have more? Also, who’s paying for all of this? I sure hope it’s not the taxpayers.

This woman should have her uterus removed for gross reproductive misconduct. We don’t live in some third would country where a large family is needed to counteract high infant mortality. So I don’t buy into any cultural arguments. This is a free country and she is more than entitled to make very bad choices. I refuse to fault the clinic since they’re a business in the buiness of making babies and they certainly delivered on that promise. You get what you pay for. We are just as entitled to be upset that the cost of raising her brood will most certainly fall on the rest of us.

These DRs. were very irresponsible if you ask me.Who paid for her treatments? Who is paying for these babies? She should have been turned away. The mother is a selfish woman and the doctors and hospital are greedy for publicity. My heart goes out to those babies. Besides the financial costs that the family will incur & more than likely the people of California will be taking care of, look at the publicity the hospital and the physician’s group will get. I’m sure they thought initially it was going to be positive, being the second goup of 8 to be delivered alive. I believe all will find it back fired for both and the children will pay the price.

Does this woman have a job? Is she supporting her any of her children or are the American tax payers? Is the father or fathers paying child support? What ethical Doctor would implant ANY embryo into a woman who already had 6 children under the age of 8? This is what is wrong with the government completely supporting people so that they can do nothing but breed! She should have to figure out a way to support her kids without the people who get up and go to work everyday and do their best to take care of their families having to do it for her! Sick and tired of dead-beat people who do nothing but suck off the government teats of hardworking, taxpaying Americans.

Why was the implantation allowed in the first place?
Was the fertility clinic thinking of anything besides how much money it could collect by doing the “procedure?”
Everyone involved in this must be missing “common sense” brain cells.
One single mother can’t possible take care of 14 healthy children, but to consider the youngest 8 are not healthy now and may need apecial care and attention forever and that the American welfare system (American taxpayer) will have to foot the bill for hundreds of thousands (millions?) of dollars shows nothing but selfishness irresponsiblility and cruelity on the part of everyone involved.

Modern medicine sometimes mimics miracles, which is a good thing. But where is the wisdom and rational, not to mention ethical, reasoning behind providing fertility treatment to a woman who has obviously exhibited fertility six times already? I agree that every child is a blessing but in this case the blessing(s) artificially produced to excess. Hopefully all eight will be healthy but odds are against that. Quality of life may be a huge issue. While I question the sanity of the mother requesting fertility treatment, the ethical judgement of her physician should also be addressed – what was he thinking? If this had been her first successful attempt at conception and delivery I would have hoped she would have counted her blessings and stopped precreating. I wish them all well and the wisdom to no longer “go forth and multiply.”

Obviously, if she is a single mother and living with her parents with her six other children under the age of seven, that in itself is extremely costly not to mention the cost of IVF, she must make a great salary in order to support this large family. Please tell me – do I have the right spin on this story? I’m confused!!!!

You’re kidding me! Who paid for the fertility treatment? Who’s paying for the hospital care? Everyone involved in this from the mother to the mother’s parents to the doctor’s should all have to pay retribution for this debaucle! If the mother was too stupid to know better, where were the parents? I guess they’re too stupid too! And the doctors – My God they should certainly know better. ABC news just announced that California is putting a freeze on helping the elderly, but they are going to pay for this mess!

After having six babies already this woman should not have been considering having any more children. She is not going to be able to work to support her children and will wind up on public assistance. I am sick and tired of people living off the welfare system and not being contributors to our world economy. I have to work everyday and cannot afford health insurance, however this mother who is already living with her mother will get free food, health, insurance, and someone will probably donate a larger home for them to live in. What a wonderful break for someone who had money to go to a fertility doctor to try to have more children.
Posted by: Anthony | January 30, 2009, 7:25 pm 7:25 pm
Who are we to question this mother about her private life? We are,the people who are going to be paying for the care of her children. And,for the record, she made her life public information. This is not only a disaster but an outrageous too. The director of the fertility clinic and the mother should be criminally charged. What sane person would implant eight embryos into the womb of a person who already has six children ages 7, 6, 5, 3 and twins aged two? Does a woman who has at least one child per year really need fertilization? Any wonder why California is bankrupt?

“What happened to personal choice? Are they not w/ a mother? It should not be the choice of the doctors; or the gov’t to decide the amount of children a person can have…. unless, of course, this is China; where the gov’t does impose those limitations.”
It’s no longer a “personal choice”, when the implications become a burden for others….I’m glad this family isn’t in my state…if they were, I’d start an effort to drive them out, and stick their hand out somewhere else for support….RESPONSIBLE people should not be burdened by the stupid and selfish acts of others…..And BTW, China’s effort to curb population growth is the result of considering the resulting disaster that would come by doubling or tripling their already bulging population….Happy to see ignorance is so alive and well…..

It is ridiculous to pose the question “was she counseled…” Obviously, all the counseling in the world would not have mattered. The physician(s) involved should have their licenses revoked. As many others have already said–she clearly did not have a fertility problem and now the taxpayers are stuck with supporting 14 children, plus massive medical bills, instead of a mere six kids.
Posted by: renie | January 30, 2009, 7:28 pm 7:28 pm
Finally the issue of ethical behavior of fertility clinics is being addressed. As a former neonatology RN I saw my fair share of multiple births–all of which ended with the neonates in the hospital for months on end and millions of dollars in expenditures. The clinic that provided the woman with this service should be shut down. Their license revoked and the physicians censored. There is absolutely no reason this woman should have birthed 8 more children with 6 already in the home. This is NOT a cause of celebration but one of despair.
Posted by: Kim | January 30, 2009, 7:28 pm 7:28 pm
I think the fertility clinic which participated in this travesty should be identified and held up to public ridicule. You know they didn’t provide their services gratis.
This is an example of capitalism and greed at its best. Follow the money!

What kind of fertility doctor implants eight embryos into the belly of a
single mother of six? Who paid him/her to do this? He/she should be the one held responsible for all the hospital bills and expenses as well as helping to raise all those children. How many fathers or taxpayers are paying for the first six kids?? it’s spelled GREED.
Posted by: ladyb007 | January 30, 2009, 7:30 pm 7:30 pm
In the first place, how was she approved for IVF?? Six kids under age seven certainly doesn’t even hint of a remote possibility of conceiving problem. Question that arises regarding the six other youngsters, were they conceived naturally or through IVF and if so through IVF she is a pathetic and selfish individual that only looks at having another child as a means to increase her income by public welfare support. Take away all the children and let those that desperately want children experience the most precious and rewarding experience of loving a child…do not let this most abusive and sickening type of child abuse to continue with a woman that shouldn’t have the the right to even be considered a mother.

When are these morons going to wake up and realize that this planet is overwhelmed with humans already, and you have 6 children, why in the world would you even consider getting pregnant again, much less bring eight more undersized babies to suck up the already strained medical resources that we have left. It’s not fair to the children and it’s not fair to the taxpayers who will undoubtedly pick up the tab for their expenses. It’s time for the ignorant people of this world to get a grip and realize they are not the only ones on this Earth.

He was oversexed, she was overbearing. Medicare and medicaid paid for these children. These people know how to work the system. They are living better on welfare than a majority of working Americans. More children = more tax payer money paid.

Ethically, anyone agreeing to implant eight embryos into a woman who already had six children, is unmarried with no visible means of support is criminally irresponsible. Who are these physicians? What criteria do they have before they agree to use fertility methods to induce pregnancy? How was this woman able to afford the procedure which I understand is quite expensive? It seems to me that the hippocratic oath to “do no harm” has gone the way of many other ethics in this country. For shame.

I think she watched “Jon and Kate Plus 8″ and figured out maybe she could get in on some “TV dollars” and other freebees. Big difference between the two situations though and I hope this lady doesn’t get a single dollar from any TV Network. I do think that whoever the doctors were who implanted eight embryos should be responsible for support and maintenance of all eight children until they reach 18. They deserve to be sued for medical malpractice – the settlement can be put aside to support the children.

“JUST ME” Quote: If she has the money to have fertility treatments, then we can assume that she has enough to take care of her kids——-Unquote If she had the money to get fertility treatments, then she could afford to live by herself, not with her parents who filed bankruptcy a few months before she had the treatments!! The Doctor or Clinic who gave her the treatments should be accountable for this and help pay for these babies!! It will be us taxpayers who end up paying—-people who work 2 or 3 jobs trying to make ends meet and here she will be getting all the money from us for 14 kids!! This is just rediculous!! How can a single mother handle this or even consider getting fertility treatments when she has 6 children under the age of 7, already?? IT WAS DONE ALL FOR THE MONEY!!!!

I would really like to know who paid for this procedure???. I know it is not likely being paid for by any insurance company! Not many policies cover this. How can anyone with 6 children afford this?! My daughter & her husband are PAYING for their proceedure to hopefully get pregnant with 1 (or no more than) 2 babies and she is only 30. They have been trying for 5 years to get pregnant. They have NO children. She is getting NO help from any insurance or government agency. It really angers me to think anyone would even entertain the idea that they need more children with their youngest being twins at 2 years of age???? She must have started this fertility proceedure when the twins were, what ONE year old?? What is wrong with this picture. I have to worry about any doctor that would even think this could in any way be ok at a time when so many Americans are losing their jobs and homes. Privacy ??? They should have thought of this a long time ago. Just maybe this is one of the problems with our system that needs to be fixed. Have we paid for the other births too?

To those that say people should be able to have as many children as they want….this is true as long as you are paying. How can an unemployed, unmarried 33 year old support these children? Even with the help of her parents – Daycares are required to have more help than they have!

I am sick and tired of working a 40 hour plus week to pay my bills and to have my money pay for women who act irresponsible by having unprotected sex and doctors who are playing God. I am so very saddened and sickened to hear about this situation. As a young woman, I understand the want to be a mother. I had to have a hysterectomy and I know that I cannot birth children. I find what this woman and her doctors did to be appalling and irresponsible. I understand the need to be a parent and to have the family that you want, but at what expense? It all just sound so selfish. This women and her doctors are the reason why IVF and other fertility treatments get such a bad name. I just don’t understand what her fertility doctors were thinking. I mean did they do this for the money and the publicity? I hope that she is a good person and a good mother to the 6 children she already has, but what she and her doctors did was unethical and irresponsible. Her and her doctors were messing in a “world” that they shouldn’t have been messing in. I do hope that because of this situation, we decide that we need to create some sort of laws so that this never happens again!!!!!

I have listened to this story over the past three days and it becomes more bizarre with each newscast. Just who fathered this woman’s first six children and whose sperm was used to fertilize the eight eggs which just resulted in the birth of the octuplets? This man or men should be held responsible for the financial costs related to this woman’s pregnancy, delivery, hospital charges, future cost of rearing and educating these children. By my thinking, this woman and her partner(s) have committed an extreme form of “child abuse” for all fourteen children involved. How will any of those children ever have a “chance” at a normal life? The physicians who were involved with the implantation of those fertilized eggs should be barred from an further infertility or any other type of medical practice. This is not a charming story, it is an outrage and unfortunately, the lives of fourteen innocent children are in the balance!

Well I’m beginning to speculate since no one in their right mind would do something so irresponsible while the parents also sit by and say wow what a blessing, sorry this is coming out in a bad way, I’m headachy this evening. I think she participated in an experiment. She was offered money for a successful invitro. They(the family) have already stated they will fill us in on the wonderful details of all of this in the days to come. Since she already has 6 children, & there doesn’t appear to be a husband around I would hope he’s not living with her parents too; and times are tough & there are very little jobs, she decided to particpate to better her family situation. Once impregnated she didn’t want to abort any of the lives because it went against her morals. That can be the only logical explaination on this planet as to why someone would bring 8 more possibly all unhealthy children into the world, even thoughI pray they will not be. I hope whoever sponsored this research promised her a million or more, she’ll need it!

ABC should look into the fertility clinic that treated her. According to the medical ethicists interviewed about this case, the doctor who implanted this woman should not have implanted more than two embryos.
A doctor should be able to tell that a woman has given birth to 6 children (including two-year old twins!) when performing a medical exam. Why on earth would a clinic agree to provide fertility treatments to a healthy young woman who has had 6 live births?
Answer: GREED
This clinic should lose its license. Immediately.

I totally agree that Americans are pumping out way too many kids! It makes me sick when these women get pregnant for state assistance. If this woman was half way intelligent would leave 7 babies behind for adoption when she goes home. If she was even smarter she would tie her tubes while she was there! It is time for tougher reform on state assistance rules. Was this woman on medicaid while undergoing these fertilization treatments? Since these children are premies, won’t they be eligible for Supplemental Security Income from Social Security Administration? Was this her plan all along? I wonder how far she had thought all this through? Social Security income and medicaid for all those children all tax free?

What ever happened to personal responsibility? That includes the fertility clinic that did this. If the government (us) would stop giving welfare checks per baby and the parent had to pay expenses maybe it would make women think twice about having babies for money. How can a single mother give each of these children the personal care they need. What she did was selfish.

I do not understand how this woman, who is undoubtedly on welfare of some sort with 6 kids already, living with her parents, could get a fertility clinic to agree to get her pregnant again. This was definitely malpractice on their part and they should have to reimburse any money that they were given from MediCal, etc. to pay for this treatment. She obviously didnt need any more children. She only wanted more payments for more child dependents. Its outrageous and I hope you keep on top of this story so the truth will come out.

wanted to have 6-8 kids so she could get fame and have house built for her and free diapers etc. etc. This is a form of child abuse. Authorities should consider if she is an adequate Mother to take care of these innocent babies. Also the last news says she is single and used a sperm donor.

I have 1 question: who is going to pay for the hospital bill and for these children to grow up? Answer: the American taxpayers, of which I am one, because the government gives all kinds of aid to women and couples with children, whereas women and couples without get no special breaks. As far as I am concerned, every medical practitioner who impregnated that woman should be brought up on charges before the medical board and stripped of their rights to practice medicine. I am sick and tired of working my fingers to the bone to pay for people’s irresponsibility.

A family of 6 should not be considered for fertility treatment. I’d call this single mom ‘Serially-Pregnant’ and put her in the same category as persons addicted to plastic surgery. Mental health care is what’s required here.

As long as this person is not on welfare there is no problem with what they want. If however this person is on welfare there is a REAL BIG PROBLEM. I should not be made/forced to pay for their children and their upbringing. It is bad enough that there is abusers of welfare. I am hoping that this person is not on welfare of any kind. That is a subject that was not talked about on the NEWS about this issue. They only stated that this person still lived at home and did not give the reason why. It is sensationalism to not report the truth. Don’t report parts but the whole story.

This disgusting situation once again underscores that it is well past time that our society to muster the courage to address the elephant in the room. Just how much should society at large subsidize other peoples children? These children will no doubt cost the taxpayers MILLIONS… why should society foot the bill for such an extreme and unnecessary family?

i think they should take all her kids and put them in foster homes. who in there right mind would let a mother (who probably can’t even take care of the 1st 6) have 8 more kids. especially if the mothers dad has to go back to Iraq to support the family while the women don’t even get jobs to help support the family. not to mention where in the hell is the father of all these children?

Why was this woman given these treatments in the first place? There are many women who would benefit from fertility treatment, but she was not one of them. Who paid for the treatments? Was it the taxpayers? Now all California taxpayers will be paying for the cost of these children in the foreseeable future. The fertility clinic and its doctors should bear some financial responsibility in the debacle.

The hospital will go into debt, pass any costs it can to other patients, and the state and all of us will support these kids and their mother (her plan, I suspect). This is ethically and morally wrong and should be denounced in a world where so many children are starving every day. Shame on all who knew, but still went through with this!!

What is the interview/eligibility process for fertility treatment? Was this woman subjected to any kind of application/interview process prior to fertility treatment? Obviously with six children, she does not have a problem with getting pregnant. I also wonder if the previous six children were fathered by 1 father, or six different fathers?
Besides collecting either welfare or child support from the father(s), what was this woman’s reason for having more children? You can bet that the medical bills for the octuplets will reach close to $900,000 dollars plus, especially with a team of 46 doctors on hand to deliver the babies. Not only is this mother irresponsible, and negligent, but the staff who approved her for fertility treatment need to be held accountable.

nice comments jd~~not~~ to answer the original question: yes, there is a great deal wrong with any mother with 6 children undergoing fertility treatments. if taxpayers are underwriting the cost of raising these children (and we absolutely are) then the problem is more significant.

This was terribly selfish, inconsiderate decision by this parent. Living with her parents with six children already… why in God’s name did she seek the need for fertility drugs in the first place and what were the fertility specialist thinking?!
But I’m hardly surprised anymore. Look at that arrogant Kate Gosselin, the mother on the TLC program “John & Kate plus eight.” All the average families are struggling in these economic challenging times, yet this pompous “mother” turned her brood into a cash cow by exploiting her children and cashing in on everything free that comes her way, family “bus” trips to Hawaii, California, New York and now the new home where she had the audacity to gaze out her kitchen window overlooking a spectacular scenery and waves her hand dramatically as she proclaims… “it’s all mine, as far as I can see.”
So if you’re lacking any real ambition, why not get yourself implanted so you can sing the “self pity blues” and have all these brain dead sponsors shoveling everything free their way. Beats trying to live within your means or having only what you can afford like the average family, hell Oprah, Ellen, TLC & all the others will be tripping over each other to give, they’ll be just fine… I’m sure a local builder will even set them up in a house they couldn’t ordinarily afford.

It’s possible laws were violated by the clinicians and the mother. If not, then I see news laws soon. These kids may become wards of the state because of the fraud perpetrated by the mother, and put up for adoption. I’m 51 and on assistance and have put off a family precisely because I can’t support one and I don’t want to raise one on welfare. This is unfair to me.

The 6 trillion$ that have been allocated, indebted for and partially spent by the Miscreant outgoing administration of this past 8 years, has enriched Halliburton, Blackwater, Bechtel, Prescient LLC and a few others so they have full pockets to hire his services.

As a retired teacher, I’ve seen too many children who have physical and mental/learning problems. Life is difficult for them. Where do we think these poor children, born to a single mother, living with her parents, will end up?
I have two adopted children and a (surprise) “birth” child. My children are the most precious things in the world to me. But when I gave birth to my youngest, I had my tubes tied, knowing that I had three children who depended on me.
The mother of these octuplets seems to have no such concerns. All, or some, of those babies will have problems, whether physical or mental. How can anyone who love children do this?
The doctors who did the in vitro fertilization should be made to bear the tremendous costs that are sure to appear. Their ethics must be “lower than a snake’s belly”. Even if they didn’t know about her other children, it was irresponsible to place eight embryos in her.
Everyone connected to this fiasco should be ashamed. We, the California taxpayers, should not have to be held responsible for their (mis)behavior.

It’s obviously time we have some laws regarding fertility treatments and all kinds of artificial insemination! No single woman with 6 kids should be allowed artificial means of getting pregnant. The taxes of the people will end up paying for most of the tremendous expenses involved with these children both as infants and as they grow and then go to school. We have too many people in the world as it is without having people giving birth to 14. Also the doctor who is responsible should be prosecuted for malpractice.

Many questions arise from this news…and yet no answers are given. It’s pretty clear that you and I, the hard working, tax paying, moral, ethical and God fearing will be stuck with the bill….our children and their children will pay and keep on paying…and just think….there’s no place for us to go and start a NEW “America” as our forefathers did 209 years ago.. Yes we all have the right to birth as many children as God will give us….But, this woman did not get these babies from the “Father” but only from MAN’S intervention. Time will tell, but we already know that this whole story doesn’t have a happy ending for the taxpayer….we will continue to fork out of our own proceeds and pay for those who know how to use the system. My question is, When will ABC start sharing with the world how the majority really feel and report the news in favor of Freedom and Capitalism instead of Socialism and Control by the government? When will “WE THE PEOPLE” ALL STOP PAYING for those people who suck all the blood from our wonderful country, never giving into the system but only takeing, takeing, and takeing………………………… The Bible tells us that if man wants to EAT he must WORK by the sweat of his brow. As a Born Again Believer, I believe in helping those less fortunate…to take care of the widows and the young women with children whos fathers have been robbed of their lives …..But where does one get the idea that they can do unethical things and reap good rewards….OUR COUNTRY IS GOING BANKRUPT BECAUSE OF PEOPLE LIKE THIS WOMAN AND HER PARENTS AND THOSE FERTILITY DOCTORS, THAT HAVE NO REGUARD FOR OTHERS….AND NO RESPECT…THEY THINK ONLY OF THEIR OWN AGENDAS, WANTS AND DESIRES AND ARE THE ULTIMATE IN SHELFISHNESS….MY ONLY CONSOLATION IS THAT IT WILL END with JESUS’ comming as HIS word says…The bible is the only book of prophecies that all have come to pass accept those that have not yet happened….not any other prophetic book or writings have that claim….So, Lord Jesus come Quickly………. We are failing to be sympethetic and need your return….
As for the Babies and the parents of the new mother and the siblings and the mother…They will have no worries…because heart strings have been pulled and as “PAM at posting 9:14:21 on 1-30-09″ stated…someone will come and give them free everything and you and I will still be working hard to make ends meet paying our bills like responsible americans and getting no where fast….Only GOD can bless us…cause we aren’t about to go have more children than we can afford so that we can become famous when the media picks up our story and ushers us into fame…. shame on you ABC…..It might make a better world to report only those stories like the “Person of the week”

Would it be possible for all the citizens of California to file a medical malpractice class action lawsuit if we find out that the government is supporting this family with our money?
Posted by: tina | January 31, 2009, 12:47 am 12:47 am
My concern is that this family – mother, father and daughter, are using these children to get government assistance with payments for each child to cover their costs of their home and family life and quite frankly I don’t appreciate the fact that it is our money paying to keep their lifestyle.

I’m tired of my monthly Kaiser Permanente health insurance premium of $582 for the the two of us being used to pay for couples who choose to be “kid factories”. I don’t mind some of my monthly premiums paying for couples to have no more than 2 or 3 kids. But, 6 and 14 kids medical costs coming out of my monthly premiums for somebody just infuriates me to no end!

What’s even more disturbing about the whole situation, is that there are people here commenting on how we should mind our own business and condoning this irresponsible woman’s actions.
Some have mentioned if they have enough money, why not. well, they don’t. They filed for bankruptcy last year. And who do you think is going to foot the bill for all those 14 babies?
Posted by: Incognito | January 31, 2009, 1:41 am 1:41 am
1. Tie her tubes, so that in future she does not create world record of 24 kids.
6,8,10….
2. Send those kids to CEOs of Wall Street as a bail out pkg. or nominate them for future Republican party.
Posted by: lalapo | January 31, 2009, 3:26 am 3:26 am
I saw a report that these eight babies will cost around $50,000 per year, excluding medical expenses. Add in the six other kids, and it will be $70,000 or $80,000. I hope this woman has a good job! The cost of living in California is no joke. Even though she’s living with her folks, she better be making well over $100,000 per year to support herself and her 14 kids.
I’m just barely hanging on, and California is going broke. This was her choice. I hope she doesn’t expect the rest of to pick up the tab. That’s not fair to us OR her 14 kids!

ok I got it! I’m still speculating…There is an OUTER LIMITS program that shows you how genetic testing had begun & how they had learned how to make “superhumans” by influencing & tampering with the embryo DNA somehow. However, if the drug or the tampering with the DNA was not successful than when the child reached puberty they mutated into a violent monster child & had to be kept locked in the basement. Who knows? Maybe this is the beginning of such experimentation

Now we learn that the latest mother of octuplets is a single mom who already had six other children and lives with her parents. Imagine the cost to the taxpayers of subsidizing this woman’s neurotic prolificacy for the next twenty years. (Could that have been what she had in mind?) This was not a medical miracle, it was a medical sideshow. Where is the outrage from the AMA? And where is the condemnation from our sanctimonious religious leaders?–if their god intended octuplets, he’d have given Eve eight teats. The fertility “expert” who enabled this unconscionable obscenity should lose his professional license–permanently– and be sentenced to handwashing these babies’ diapers until they’re all fully potty-trained!

It’s been confirmed – I just read the latest story on Yahoo news …. the grandmother of the babies indicates her daughter is obsessed with having babies and all 14 babies were produced with in vitro fertilization. Think of all the sad conditions one hears about Puppy Mills ….. well, folks, here’s the newest rage … Baby Mills. It is still outrageous even after it’s been on the news for a few days. It is disheartening, disturbing, and even disgusting that one person can make a mockery of something that should be a beautiful event.
And to digress …. I have been an opponent of the Duggers’ family with their on-going birthing of children – they’re up to 18 now. What condition would their family be in if they didn’t have the publicity and assistance of others.
I believe there is no consience of many people upon this earth as to the impact their imprint is leaving on this small, fragile World. Think of the offspring in the multiples of hundreds five generations from now from these families.
And think about the impact of the offspring of people around the world who don’t even have the understanding to comprehend what their continued multiplying of children – whether it be 3, 4 or 8 or 10 children will do to this World.
The World is doomed and can only implode upon itself by this unconsiencable behavior.

You all need to get over yourselves. If this was a bid for “15 mins of fame” don’t you think she’d have contacted the media? TLC loves thus stuff. They probably would have paid a bundle to follow her pregnancy. And the women continues to keep her silence. She could be raking in the bucks from Dateline, Primetime Live, etc giving hospital interviews. Yet she remains silent. If she wanted money and fame, she’d be far more vocal than she’s been.
You are all being sucked into this media firestorm. This lady won’t talk so they find all the dirt they can on her, her family, whatever in an attempt to get her to speak out. I say good for her. She’s holding up well. Most people would be angry if the media was talking about them and their family this way.
State aid did not pay to get her fertility treatments. She had to pay for it herself. There is no evidence that she has ever been on state aid for her or her children. So until there is proof that she is asking for a hand-out, you shouldn’t act as if she is reaching into your wallets.
As for limiting the number of children people can have (single or married) that is beyond stupid. Do you really want the gov’t telling you how many children you can have? If so, move to China. This is America.
There is also no conclusive evidence that the fertility docs implanted 8 embryos. Guidelines dictate that they implant no more than 4. Give her history of twins, it is possible that the embryos implanted split into twins, triples, whatever. Doctors do their jobs. These docs were paid to help this lady get pregnant. They also counseled her to reduce the pg. It was her right to decide not to reduce. Living in a pro-choice society, women have the right to choose to continue or not to continue a pregnancy.
She made a hard choice and it was far more likely that she’s loose all her babies than to be able to gestate them for 31 weeks.
These babies are a miracle. People should just butt out and let the family alone.

Look, folks: what happened to a “woman’s right to choose”? She was planning on having only one, and when she found out there were multiples she chose not to abort. That’s not wrong; that’s admirable. You people amuse me with your panic about 14 kids. I’m from a family of 12 kids, and I know many other families with similar numbers. We are not a pile of lemmings, thank you very much, we are all perfectly normal people. Its different from small families, but its not impossible, and its not miserable. Previous large births have had an outpouring of support from friends and generous corporations, and the same can happen here. Don’t judge other family’s choices by your own experience.

Poor babies; poor grandparents!
A news show stated that she had a psychology degree and was working on her masters. (I don’t know if this was verified.) Question is: didn’t she learn anything in school?
Also, it’s been reported that she is working as a psychiatric technician (and that she had a license to do so).
Here in Louisiana (and probably most places) there is no license for this job. It pays very poorly.
Well, the babies are here. I hope private citizens/companies/churches/,etc. will pitch in. The woman obviously needs help in more ways than one.

I think from reading the interview with this woman’s mother that she knew what she was doing and it desperate to have attention of others around her… with all the reality shows on tv maybe she figured someone would help her if she had that many children.I think its sad that she could possibly raise those 14 kids in a low income situation and have a hard time making ends meet to get clothing food and necessary things that children need… the dr.(s) that did this should have their medical license removed. HER PARENTS SHOULD HAVE SAID SOMETHING TO SOMEONE LONG BEFORE!
Posted by: Patty | January 31, 2009, 1:06 pm 1:06 pm
It is my feeling that the biggest question here is the ethics of fertility treatment on an individual who already has six children. Her marital status/financial status should have no bearing on the decision, but the fact that she already had a houseful of children should have made an impact. Fertility treatment should be reserved for those who have no children, or few children, at the least. Now these children will face many years of medical treatment as a result of having been born early – this was a know outcome when implanting that many embryos. There is a serious flaw in the ethics of this case, in many ways.
Posted by: Mother of seven | January 31, 2009, 1:25 pm 1:25 pm
Yes, the doctors should have their license removed, in my opinion.
It’s malpractice on many levels.
However, the babies are here.
She’ll probably keep them – for now.
Bottom line – the babies need help now and in years to come. Also, the woman needs help in more ways than one.
This woman (and her parents) should have their heads examined.

this woman did not bear children, she created walking dolls for what seems like a childhood she is trying to create for herself. obviosly she has not grown up. and now is dependent on us working taxpayers to pay for her and her doll collection. she should be fined. and put those children in a good home, with parents who can give them quality care, which they truely deserve.
Posted by: spinia | January 31, 2009, 2:02 pm 2:02 pm
Wherever she had this done obviously shouldn’t have given her 8 embryo’s for any reason, even if she didn’t have any other children, carrying 8 is dangerous for the mother and the children. The fact that they all made it and are doing better then most NICU babies is a miracle. She has probably been to a fertility clinic before being that she already has twin 2 yr olds. Obviously it is HER choice how many children she has but fertility clinics def wont be helping her from here on out. If she has the means to take care of them then its NONE of our business how many she has but if she doesn’t and she is going on welfare then she needs to take a step back and look at what she is doing. 14 is def enough now.
However I don’t agree with how the world is in her business..Her mom is betraying her by speaking on the news about her issues.

hmmmm,So how will the mother decide whether to visit her 8 babies or to stay home and take care of her 6 children for the next couple of months, there are only so many hours in a day. To me all 14 children are being neglected already. She can not expect her mother and the nanny to watch the kids. Why have the children if you can not give all of them your attention. And it sounds like the father of all 14 children are the same man???? Make him pay! I do agree that this woman should have all 14 children taken away!

I think it’s outrageous. Think of all the couples out there that cannot conceive, wait years to adopt and have many disappointments with IVF. I feel that it’s unethical, putting the blame on the physician that did this. Who is going to pay for these children’s special needs?? Guess who…this is attrocious.

Isn’t the State of California going bankrupt already? Can’t pay tax returns, etc., population growing by leaps and bounds, too many illegal “citizens” taxing the system. This lady is already going to State college which mean she’s not putting out much for her education. She’s not married, living with her parents and already have six kids, she sounds like most of her support is State sponsored already. Of course she’s receiving welfare, and all the kids she has already are going to public school, one’s already autistic and who knows what disabilities the new babies will have. Citizens of California, you have just become the proud sponsors of 8 more dependents! She should be cut off from State support but they won’t do that because it’s not POLITICALLY CORRECT! California is the representation of a society gone crazy and who should be surprised really. Hell, they voted the Terminator as Gov. and he’s doing a bang up job!!!!!

I think this is obscene – I hope before any public money/assistance goes to this fool (the mother) that the doctor who implanted the embryos should be held financially responsible. With the grace of God these babies will be healthy but the statement from the grandmother that the mother “gets paid for this” just worries me that this is just going to be a well paying sideshow, with the babies paying the price. Heaven help them all – the babies that is.

God help those babies.

I just read that ALL of the children were conceived by In Vitro, not just the octuplets. How is this possible? In Vitro is very, very expensive. I think something like $15 to $20 thousand per try. How could she afford something like this?
According to recent news reports these embryos were left over from her other In Vitros. This whole story makes no sense to me. No woman that has six children should be even considered for In Vitro, let alone implanting eight embryo’s.
The guidlines are 2-3 for any woman under the age of 36. This woman is 33. Who is the heck were these Drs.??
Who is going to pay for the astronomical medical costs? What about the developmental problems these babies may suffer. Who is responsible for that?
I think an investigation needs to be conducted into the conduct of these Drs. I’m even questioning why this woman had In Vitro for the first six??
The whole thing is ridiculous.

Listen here – those of you that say it is none of ‘our’ business…..Wake up!! It IS our business because yes, we (including you) ARE going to be paying for these children one way or another all because of the mother’s selfishness!! If she has money, why is she living at home then!!! Huh? And putting money aside – this day and age there is no way she can physically care for these 14 children giving them the love they all deserve. She will be soooo stressed and tired it will be impossible!! Good luck! And, I agree, enough with the T.V. shows about the Duggers and John and Kate make 8 or whatever it’s called. Fine to have lots of kids, but hmmm can’t support them on your own evidentially, you need US to pay for them by being on TV!!!!

I wasn’t going to post anything because most people have covered how I feel about this issue. It was unethical and selfish of this single mother to have 14 children to please herself while paying little attention to how this would affect the children, her parents who have to help her care for them, and the wider community who would have to foot the bill if she failed to provide for them on her own. Needless to say, Child Services needs to get involved in this case immediately. The fertility doctors also acted unethically and should be penalized. But I really had to respond to the people who keep comparing this to Jon & Kate Plus 8. This is not even close to being the same! Kate didn’t already have six children and wanted more, and she wasn’t single and, at the time, financially dependent on others. Jon and Kate were both employed, had two children and wanted one more. No greed, irresponsibility or craziness here. As God-fearing people, they often receive blessings, such as an outpouring of love and gifts for them and their kids, but they don’t seek these things out. And they have worked hard over the years to take care of those kids every single day, without Govt welfare.

Jon/Kate and Michelle/Jim Bob have nothing do with this women breeding children. They are married and are supporting their families the best they can. This women having 14 children is a crazy thing for any one person to do. No one person can take care of 8 babies and 6 other children by them self. Daycare or childcare provider can’t even by law take care of 8 infants at one time.
This woman needs mental health help. Quickly before she has anymore children. These children all 14 of them are at a very strong disadvantage for a happy or successful life. Who is going to pay to rise these children??
I pray that this woman (she not a mother she a breeder) finds away to rise these poor helpless children. With all the love, support, caring and respect they deserve. May God watch over these children.
Posted by: Penny | January 31, 2009, 7:24 pm 7:24 pm
These children are going to get sick of one another because they have no room for crawling, running, or alone. Half will be inside and half outside trying to get away from each other. The fighting is going to be hellish and the other four kids out of six will join in. What about their mental stability? Some people say to send them back to Iraq and that country can pay for them. To a certain point I agree to give them up for adoption, and all of them have contact with one another so they all know who is who and still have that sibling relationship. As for the dr, I wonder if it the IVF was done in the US or Iraq or where? I also heard that her embryos divided resulting in 8 babies. Thank God they are healthy and YES they are a blessing. However, the Dr, should not have played God.

This story demonstrates the absolute stupidity operating in the U.S. today.
The woman should be committed to a mental institution;
the fertility doctors’ medical licenses revoked and then jailed or made to work to support the last 8 kids;
kids placed for adoption to sane families;
fathers of first 6 kids chased to ends of earth to pay child support; and
California should review entire welfare system.

Thanks for asking! As a victim of true infertility, I am disgusted with this entire story. Infertility treatment is not covered by any private or publicly funding insurances. There is way more to this story and I am not too anxious to find out. It was not mistake that she went to Kaiser in the first trimester. There is either an agenda, or mental condition, maybe both.
This is truly tragic for the babies! God help all her FOURTEEN children!

According to reported statements from her own mother, this woman has been obsessed with kids since her teens. So the whole Jon and Kate thing may have fed it, but it wasn’t the trigger. And I have to wonder why her MOTHER is leaving her own home. Kick HER out; don’t let her come “home” with this litter.
I’m sure Extreme Makeover Home Edition is in talks right now… I do like that show, but some of those families were ridiculous. This would set a new record for them, and make ABC millions.
I can’t have children — I adopted. ONE. Though my child would really like a sibling, and I’m not averse to the idea, we are no longer in the financial position we were in then. This is what’s called reality. She and people like her need to be introduced to it.

Obama should be checking into the octtuplets finances and make sure they never get a dime of taxpayer money. She wanted to have them now she can get off her butt and support them. That means she can pay for their special ed and any medical needs. if she can’t pay then she needs to give them to a loving family that can make sure they can support them and provide them with a stable environment.

All multiple births conceived by IVF should be required by law to report those births to the state board of medical examiners to determine if those pregnancies were appropriate and safe for mother and child. Snce economics figure so prominently in decision making, the insurer, private or state, should pay for delivery and care of only a single pregnancy.

A single mother,,,, six kids in tow already,,, eight new babies to care for,,, and no husband in sight! Guess who pays the bill? That’s right, you ‘n me. This sounds like the American entitlement program dream come true. If this woman can’t pay for the care of these children, then the doctor(s) who planted those little seedlings should. And they might as well throw in a little extra for forced contraception and counseling for her too!
Posted by: Monty Rivers | February 2, 2009, 8:40 am 8:40 am
OK. I’m reading the following- she was paid for treatments and did not have to pay for the treatments (however, I suspect this was a government sponsored clinical trial)the doctor and the woman will gain alot of coverage because this is an 8 baby birth. I bet the doctor was counting on that! Now, moving along, I see that she is attending college for a 4 year degree. Here in Ohio, the government grants only cover 2 years, so I suspect the bankrupcy is a result of student loan debt. Also, if this woman wass beng paid for the IVF, then she would never have been eligible for public assistance because her income was too high. So either she did not claim her income or she was not on assistance. What it seems to be here is a case of the doctor experimenting on her in order to see if indeed someone can birth 8 babies at once, thus gaining this doctor recognition and offers of more grants to continue his studies. Its a two edged sword because those unfortunate children eventually are the ones that suffer. However, the studies may help other people get pregnant that would otherwise be childless. Its all under assumption. I just pray to God those children grow up with the love and attention they need, not media coverage and the public scorning them because people think they may have been a burden to the system. And I do think she should have her head examined because the stress of 6 kids was more that enough to drive her nuts!

This type of fertility treatment is criminal and should be considered malpractice.
Who even allowed this woman to have treatment with 6 other children?
Who followed her pregnancy and allowed her to keep them?
Fertility treatment like this was designed for women who have difficulty conceiving. At this point she should not be allowed to keep any of her children. It is very cruel to them. She has just selfishly forced 8 newborns into lives full of suffering from health and developmental problems. There are more restrictions for getting a driving license!

This has to be one of the most incredible events thus far in 2009. I say thus far because people are getting crazier and crazier. In our attempts as a society to be politically correct, common sense has gone out the proverbial door. When people do crazy things like this I always say look at their parents or their upbringing. Ms. Nadya Suleman, the bearer of the 8 babies, yes, already had 6 kids. This woman, according to reports given by her mother, Angela Suleman, had been obsessed with having kids since she was a teenager. She also went on to state that she was glad that her daughter did not get pregnant as a teenager. Well, she certainly made up for it after she got older. She was fertilized to get pregnant with all of her chidren. Her mother stated that her tubes were “plugged up”. Who paid for all this fertility?? That stuff is not at all cheap. Nadya Suleman’s mother even said that a psychologist once told her to asker daughter leave home. The thought was that if she were on her own she would not keep having children. Who knows though. Yes, I blame her parents a great deal. They were incredible enablers. If you feel early on that your child needs mental help. GET IT for them! Do not wait for the consequences of the problems to manifest. Also, she had the first 4 kids one at a time. Mind you they were only a year apart. Why would responsible parents keep allowing anyone, especially your mentally disturbed, single, unemployed/underemployed, career student daughter keep bringing babies home to your house? The parents had some obvious issues with boundaries. And for you people you say children are a blessing. WE live in the real world!!The blessings [babies] come with a great deal of emotional, financial, and physical responsibility, if you do it right. MOST of us do not have enough of any of the afore stated resources for 6 kids let alone 14 kids. The blessings[babies] that we bring onto this earth grow up to be adults of some sort. The quality of the resulting adult is greatly determined by the time and energy parents put into them as children. And finally, the so called fertility experts who did the treatments for her, I feel, acted highly unethically. They should have their medical licenses revoked permanently.

Six kids already?
I think she has a new syndrome, probably some variation on Munchausen by proxy – instead of getting sick, she gets pregnant. Drs. need to take responsibility for their action, fertility treatments shouldn’t be treated like a drive-thru menu, 8 implantations sounds like they offered to super size her fries.

After reading most of the comments I see that most of those responding are outraged about the financial costs to all of us resulting from this mom of octuplets. What none of you seem to understand is that all of us pay extra costs for EVERY ONE of these high order multiple births: for mom’s pre-birth hospital stay, for increased cost of birth, for the babies neonatal ICU stays of weeks or even months, for congenital and developmental defects due to their stress in the womb and extreme prenatal status – remember recent news reports about the problems even singles suffer even when born only slightly premature, … We all pay, whether it’s through taxes or increased hospital or insurance costs that are spread out among all of us, and through higher costs of educating and treating children with cerebral palsy and other problems associated with these multiple births.
These high order multiple pregnancies are ALWAYS WRONG, and are considered failures rather than successes by ethical fertility practicioners – yet they are splashed all over the news and touted as “miracles”, often the families are recipients of donations of diapers and other goods and services (another cost to the rest of us?), and these children are often subjects of follow-up specials on their birthdays and other milestones.
In light of these facts, I don’t know if I’m more saddened or outraged that the public only seems to be upset about this latest set of high order multiples because of the status of their mother. The ethics and morals of this set of babies is no different than that of those born to the couple in Texas, also with octuplets, or the McCoughey’s who were showered with goodwill and goods when their septuplets were born, … and the list goes on.
The only surprise to me was to discover that these 8 embryos were actually implanted through IVF, which is clearly discouraged by those in the fertility medicine field. I had previously suspected that the octuplets were a result of fertility drug treatments, (which are even available for order online without the supervision of any doctor). If these drugs are given under a doctor’s supervision, the number of “ripe” eggs can be determined and an ethical doctor would caution against having unprotected sex during that cycle if there are more than 2 or 3. But many people are irresponsible and don’t follow those instructions due to being impatient or to the cost and discomfort of going through yet another cycle of treatments.
I’ve never been a fan of increasing the list of elective procedures that are covered by insurance, but I think we would actually all save expense if there were both coverage and increased restriction of these fertility procedures.

As a child advocate and pro-lifer I find this story very disturbing. First it is very sad that these children are being birthed into poverty and unfortunate that the children often pay for the folly of the parents.
This mother needs to be evaluated mentally for her actions in using fertility treatments and having no income. Obviously its not challenging enough that she is struggling in her life circumstances but she invites 6 then 8 more. I guess misery loves company.
The state needs to seize custody of all of these children until it can be established how they will be cared for. 14 children in a 3 bedroom house is a health hazard.
She could also be immature like a lot of clients I’ve worked with who think “have a baby get free stuff (i.e. WIC-cereal, juice, cheese; Section 8; public aid-cash, medical and foodstamps).” Her approach to the poor economy seems to be to coast on welfare and other free stuff from a sympathetic public (i.e. Jon & Kate plus 8). And you know what. It just might work.
There isn’t anything noble about poverty and though I am happy the children were allowed to be born, I have nothing but sympathy for these children. They would be best served been placed with families who can provide for their basic needs.

This woman does not have support of a significant other, who does she think is going to help her pay for their healthcare? I was unemployed and uninsured had surgery and was denied a grant to help me pay for my medical bills. Luckily I am now employed. But tell me one thing….The US Government is going to provide her with the money she will need to support her. She already had a house full of kids. I would have loved to have more childredn but the instability that we face today makes it impossible. I have 1 boy and 1 girl and am content. Is this woman even employed?

these babies should be taken away by DCFS and given up for adoption to couples who have no children and are desperately seeking to adopt.

How can you go on and have more and more when you can’t even take care of the ones you have? The neighbor said on National News the other day that she worries about the kids all of the time playing and riding their bikes in the street. And there was another woman who said that she used to babysit for this person’s Autistic son. Now why is someone care for only one of your 8 kids? Is it because he is Autistic and he is too much for you? There is something not right with this family.

I just have to say that I have been asking the same questions since the news broke about this womans financial situation. Are they members of a cult or something?? Trying to breed an army? The grandfather told reporters that they would not be living in the house shown on the news, they were moving somewhere bigger at an undisclosed location.
I do believe the doctors should be charged by the state for malpractice. Any “fertility DR” should be able to do a physical exam and tell the women had multiple children already. Documentation should have been requird as to financial ability to care for these children and proof of existing children before treatments started.
For a Dr to implant 8 eggs in the uterus of a women who is obviously not infertile is a crime and the Dr’s should have topay restitution (child support) to help care for these children.
No, II don’t wish to live where the government dictates how mant children an individual may have, but the guidlines for fertility treatments should be just as stringent as adoption guidelines. Why have a litter of kids when you could adopt and give a home to children already here in need??

I love children and if God had given me a houseful I would have loved them, but even I would have questioned whether I could have afford them. 14 children is very irresponsible on her and the doctor’s part. Perhaps that doctor should support those children. Also, I thought I read that one of her children has autism. That in itself can be very costly. How does she think she is going to be able to afford it?

I believe that she needs to be given the option to put these children up for adoption. First, I don’t think that anyone needs to be having more than 2-3 kids in this day and age. No matter religioius preference!(Duggars included)
I am outraged at this situation as a taxpayer and as a mother. I have 3 children 5 and under and find it hard to give them the time and attention that I would like to. And no matter how you schedule/plan it you simply cannot adequately care for so many children whether it is 6 or 18! She obviously needs some mental health attentiona nd then adoption should be posed to her as an option. I have so many friends and family that have tried for so long to have a child and they are able to support and love one. Why is it the undeserving that can have children in “litters”?!
There is just so many things wrong with this situation and others similar(Duggars) that it is hard to know where to begin. In the end though, it will be the children that will suffer and no child should have to be put through that.
We need to take our concerns to our government and make our displeasure heard. Blogging about it doesn’t keep it from happening again but lobbying our government for change may.
‘Live and let live’ in this ever-changing world just no longer applies.

I don’t feel that having 14 children is immoral or that a person can not give them enough emotional or physical care. I do however feel that this person even going through fertility treatment is abserd. Let alone for a dr. to implant 8 embyos he should be held accountable for his actions. Be it a lost license, legal action for putting 8 lifes in danger (because an embyro is a life) or financially if the state has to pay a penny of it. I also saw we they are excepting donations. Excuse me but if you choose to have 8 babies and 14 children then you should be supporting them on your own. Even the fact the large companies are handing out diapers, wipes, formula, food and many other items, I feel is wrong. We the consumer are paying for them in higher prices. And why would anyone choose to implant 8 little lives in one person knowing that even if half survived there would be nicu time. Maybe the dr. and parents who choose to implant that many embryos should sit in the nicu you for one day, I bet they would sure consider less embryos after watching what those little ones go through.

First, I am glad the mother did not decide to abort these children after her unfortunate decision to seek out this fertilization to begin with. Not to overlook the doctor that would put her at this type of risk. She could have died and left behind the other six children. Now according to the news she is asking for $2 million dollars for her story to help take care of these children. Well I don’t know the woman or her ethics. It all just makes you wonder. We all have freedom and choices but it should include responsibility and thinking of others. (including the unborn) And not just pleasing ourselves. Still wish her family the best. Children need strong role models that includes an involved father figure. It is sad when some in a society see the male or female as only donors to childbirth. It is so much bigger than that, the true meaning of mother and father.
Posted by: justanotheropinion | February 2, 2009, 11:36 am 11:36 am
Humans are not supposed to have litters!
What this mother wanted, or why, is of little importance.
No “good’ mother would want to bring these tiny people into into the world, knowing ahead of time that, by all odds, she’s assigning them a life of adversity with all the health and developmental problems they will most likely endure.
The doctors who foolishly implanted all 8 should be investigated and possibly lose their licenses.

First, I must say congratulations to the woman. A birth is a miraculous thing; especially the birth of eight babies.
A family’s structure is private. How many children a person or couple chooses to have, and how they raise their children, is an inherent freedom that every American (and every person should have).
UNTIL:
1.) There is any sort of abuse or neglect that puts the child(ren) at risk.
2.) The person or family goes onto public support and expects tax payers to pay.
Your children have rights too. And so do they tax payers. The minute you harm your child or go on use public welfare, the government and the media have a right to step in.
If you are using tax payers money to support your child, the tax payer has a right to know and to comment.

She had no business in doing fertility treatments, she already has six children. She should be grateful for those six. I’m an IVF patient, I would be more than grateful for one. Her and her doctors actions were demeaning. She lives with her parents with no job and plus she is on welfare. Right there that should of rang a bell in her head…she can’t support all her children. The sad part is the taxpayers will be flipping the bill for her stupid and selfish decision. Personally, I think all of her children should be taken away from her. There are many loving families out there would adopt them and give them the home and life they deserve!

This is an outrage and another example of what our “free” system rewards. This mother will make more money from welfare by having more kids and somehow sees a personal, probably monetary benefit by creating more children. She may only be trying to “survive” and may simply be taking advantage of the system we have allowed for years. We all observe firsthand the continual waste and poor appropriation of money in our country. There is no fear. Our present economic situation really should not be a “surprise”. Those in charge are the ones responsible: all the presidents, congressman, Ceo’s and ultimately, the people who are continuing to vote for and ALLOW all this foolishness. We are fast losing our place in the world w/ our arrogance, poor responsibility and/or financial acumen about what is happening, lack of willingness to support those leaders who want to do something about it. Leaders who have plans that include sacrifice and budgeting are usually voted out. This may not include Obama. He has yet to prove his direction and ability to change things. We are simply reaping what we have sown. We are extremely spoiled. Good luck to and God help us all, we are going to need it, since, in my opinion, our common sense went out the window long ago.

I had to fill out a form to adopt my dog from the Humane Society to be sure we were bringing her into a safe caring environment. Surely the fertility center would ask similar questions. I am happy the babies and the mom are healthy but this is very disturbing behavior. Heaven help and bless them all.

Dont be surprised when this story finally boild down to some truth of her rerasons for doing this, that the idea of being the next “Duggars” or “Jon & Kate + 8″ and getting a TV show might be a big part of her thought process!
Thsi woman has no husband is living with her mother with 6 kids under the age of 8 !
There is absoultely NO rational explanation why anyone would even think of doing this in this situation, let alone ACTUALLY doing it!

Once upon a time there was a single 33-year old mother with 6 children. The year was 2009 AD. In the wisdom bestowed on the doctors through their education, morality and ethics, they implanted her not with one more embryo, believing that she could care for 6 already, but with one more, that turned out to be 8?!
This simply defies all normal boundaries of how civilized people should, could or would live their lives. A physician slam-dunked his Hippocratic oath into the abyss of insanity, burdening society even more. And with the present crisis of 100 to 150 million orphans on the planet, and 40,000 new orphans each day, there is not only need of placing these little people to families, but also of censoring the number of children people should have, if they should have any in this day and age. We have 1 million hungry, how many sick, poor, abused, enslaved, war victims, addicts, homeless–the list is unending. Where has our common sense gone?
Each person that is born is entitled to a loving home, an education, food and proper health care, yet we all seem to be struggling for these basic needs. We need a drivers’ license but none to have a child. This girl is and was in need of deep psychotherapeutic treatment just to instill a sense of compassion in her, because her parents, her schooling and her environment were unable to. Now the State of California will have to step in with social workers who will determine whether she will be able to keep them. This is how we lose our personal freedoms, by not caring for Number 1– ourselves.
The AMA should figure out where its place is in the crazy world we live in and to examine whether they should be creating new lives or doing more to save those that are already here. And as Americans, we need to examine our educational system, and see where its deficiencies are, so that we produce well-balanced, whole individuals, that are more in sync with the state of the world as it is today.

I’m sorry, but this woman isn’t a mother. She’s a breed mare. This whole thing is downright obscene. Humans were born with TWO breasts for a reason. We’re not meant to have LITTERS.
It’s one thing the couples that couldn’t get pregnant at all and use IVF and their first successful pregnancy just happens to be multiple births. You can’t help that just like moms of natural born triplets or twins can’t help it, but to use IVF, have SIX kids, be in her life circumstances (no money, no job, no husband, no independence) and then go and have ANOTHER IVF treatment and add EIGHT kids, something about that is just wrong. I have no ill feelings towards her newest batch of babies because they are innocent in all of this, but because of her actions and the actions of her IVF doctors, there are eight newborn babies in this world that have been made into collateral damage because of this freak show. It’s just wrong. This is not fair to those kids.

ok, whats wrong with this picture? the ‘average’ couple who want infertilization done (because they are not capable of having a child) have a cost of about $20,000+ for each time the procedure ocurrs. But yet, this woman (who already has 6 other children) can walk into a hospital or clinic and say ‘i want to have more babies and ends up with another 8. Where did she get the money for this treatment? my guess is that she is ALREADY on welfare for the other 6 kids and therefore she paid NOTHING for the process. thats real fair, isn’t it? so many childless couples want kids so bad and cannot afford to go that route … so they do without or maybe adopt (which I do not see any problem with) .. but .. this 1 now has 14 that the state is going to take care of .. now really, you don’t think she is going to support them , do you?
Its just not fair!

This situation is ridiculous and obscene. I’m sure the hospital will foot all its own bills (look at this great publicity after all) but this woman now has 18 years of HUGE bills. My cousin has sextuplets and she and her husband are drowning in debt as both of them work and their families take turns watching the babies.
The scarier issue here is what the fertility doctors could have been thinking!!! I find most fertility drs to be total quacks preying on people who just want one little miracle but whoever performed this procedure needs to have his license taken away to fast it makes his head spin. I’ve grown up surrounded by doctors all the time but I have NEVER heard of something so disgustingly unethical in all my life.

I had to get more approvals to adopt my cat from the pound.
– copy of mortgage or signed letter from the Landlord
– Pay a fee and sign a paper committing to getting the pet fixed
– Lengthy questionaire about how I was going to provide for the animal
Maybe the fertility clinic should adopt the animal shelter screening policy :-)

I was told at one time it was a woman’s right to have a child or children. I agree with that, IF you can afford them.
The publicity (2 million for an interview – absurd), donations, etc. Others have done this, and it is good to a point. But when there is already 6, why would you want more? I don’t think it’s possible that she could earn enough to support these children along with 8 more. It isn’t up to her parents, welfare or anyone else to support her and the children.
Many, many people have one or two children. they want to be able to support them and give them college educations.

The mother is clearly irresponsible and selfish, but why do people say that the octuplets and their siblings should be split up and adopted? They didn’t ask to be born- why should they have to be split up and suffer even more than they will through being one of 14 children? For all we know, the mother could be taking good care of them and if she loves her children she should be given the chance to prove she can take care of them

The State of California Family Services Division should intervene. First, there are too many people in the existing household. These children should be placed in foster care and the family should be evaluated for mental and financial capacity to care for these children.

Until the full story comes out I think making these rash comments are unjustified.
Firstly- who would knowingly put their own lives at risk carrying 7-8 babies , especially if they were the sole supporter of 6 children?
Im sure the lady didnt set out to have 8 babies , be in hospital for 2 months , have a body stretched beyond recognition , probably have medical problems for the rest of her life , and have the lives of the 6 previous kids turned completely upside down.
A woman with 6 kids (and I am pregnant with my 6th) knows just how difficult it is with that number. The choice to have one more was her right- and maybe she was misguided by the fertility clinic , who told her that some of the embryos would definately not “take”?
lETS WAIT FOR HER STORY TO COME OUT BEFORE ASSUMING ANYTHING.

she has told friends that she will get paid for having all thes kids. she is living off the six kids has at home through public assitance an food stamps

I would like to point out that the Duggars are NOT on Welfare and have NO DEBT so they can have as many children as they like!!! Plus the Gosslins do their show because PEOPLE want to see it!! This CRAZY woman has no right to ask for money from people on her website she should pay for her own kids like the Duggars and Gosslins. Plus after her interview on T.V. you can see she planned for this.

Paternity…if she goes on TANF, there has to be a father involved to shake down. If she dies….these kids have no connections except the grandparents. Pretty weak…I guess there is a lot of “faith” here. I am not so trusting of fate.

Why don’t people just leave her alone? If it were any one that was married noone would be so hateful. When you do the infertilization you expect to just have one not more. Why judge her for what god has given her some women who want children and cant have them would feel blessed. As for as welfare goes people live off the system every day that can work and won’t and nobody judges them, so why judge her for something that she had no control over.
