ABC News’ Gina Sunseri reports:
Consider this trip: 1,444 miles in two days in a car with five children, including a two-month-old baby.
Sound like a nightmare? Not to Nikki Lecompte, 36. The single mother packed her four children into the car Saturday morning, and a two month old baby. Their destination: Washington, D.C. for the inauguration of Barack Obama.
She has no place to stay and no tickets, but she is going anyway.
Nikki says she has to go, and she wants her children to witness history. Her parents, she says, were not allowed to sit at lunch counters when they grew up in Louisiana. They told her about Martin Luther King Jr’s “I Have a Dream” speech, and how much they wished they could have been there. She is determined to witness Obama’s inauguration personally.
Saturday morning, she loaded Jasmine, 18, Darius, 14, Zana, 12, Anna, 9, and baby Jaden into a packed car. Everyone had to lean on the trunk door to force it to close.
The cooler is packed with bread, and peanut butter and jelly. Donations from family and friends are helping with expenses, and Nikki is optimistic that come Tuesday, they will find a place on the National Mall to witness history.
Saturday’s progress: Houston to New Orleans.
