President Obama Keeping His BlackBerry — A Bad Idea?

ABC’s Tom Johnson from New York:

President Obama is going to keep his BlackBerry.  A win?  Or a bad idea?

He has argued passionately that he should be allowed to keep the device despite the tradition that Presidents don’t email.  "They’re going to pry it out of my hands," Obama recently said.

Today, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs — in his first White House briefing — talked of a "compromise" that will allow the President to use his BlackBerry to stay connected with senior staff and friends.  He said it will allow Obama to avoid being stuck in a "bubble."

The concerns have been well documented. First and foremost: security. Despite reports that his device will be given special encryption, might someone find a way to trace the BlackBerry’s signal and know exactly where the President is?  Could a hacker pick off his messages?  And then there is the fact that all the President’s correspondence is part of the official record.  In other words his IMs and emails aren’t private and Robert Gibbs confirmed that today.

But there is another argument to be made against a Commander in Chief BlackBerrying.  Do you really want your President beholden to an addictive device that often delivers minutia?  Who will filter all those eager to ping Obama with questions and concerns?  Will Rahm Emanuel be riding sheriff over the President’s inbox like a rogue IT operator?

Yes, the BlackBerry can – of course – be a useful way to stay in the loop.  But shouldn’t the President operate at a higher level, with a clear head, out of the range of a BlackBerry?  What’s next?  Facebook?

It’s a good idea. It’s the 21st century and Obama needs to keep in touch with people outside the bubble. As long as he knows that every email he sends could be on the front page of WaPo or on CNN, than he will be just fine.

I’m sure someone had these same concerns when the telephone was invented. Its technological change and the President is no different than any other high-level decisionmaker in that regard. So long as the Blackberry communications are conducted in the spirit of open government, why the big fuss? Would it really be such a big deal if the President used Facebook? What’s the security risk there?

Posted by: Erin | January 22, 2009, 3:01 pm 3:01 pm

Maybe the WH is just scared because they are still in the Dark Ages when it comes to technology.

Posted by: Terri | January 22, 2009, 3:12 pm 3:12 pm

Why not Facebook? Why should the president be isolated? This is nonsense. Give him his Blackberry and encrypt it if necessary. Did you see those incredibly archaic phones he has to use in the Oval Office? I’ve not used anything like that for over 20 years.

Sounds like a spoiled child. I hope for him and us that this is not a bad idea. Will all of the senior staff and his appointments be keeping theirs? Maybe with his keeping on top of everything outside the bubble, he can let some of the staff whose job it is to keep him current go.

Posted by: William | January 22, 2009, 3:19 pm 3:19 pm

100% is the good idea. The President won through communicating, and it is in his blood. Cutting him off from this device could have affected him psychologically.

Posted by: Rita | January 22, 2009, 3:21 pm 3:21 pm

I’m glad the president can keep his Blackberry. I cannot imaging not being able to use e-mail for the next four (hopefully eight) years. It’s ridiculous. In this case, it sounds like his administration is aware of the risks and the concessions they needed to make to make this work, so more power to them. Also, Mr. President, feel free to e-mail me anytime!

I can see his detractors now:
“While crisis A was going on, he was texting about a basketball score!”
Personally, I would not want to give them the satisfaction.

It is a shame that we are in 2009 and the government has not upgraded safe technology that a president can use. I understand Obama argument and this should not even be an issue for him. He should be able to use a cell phone, internet and any other communication device he chooses. Come on WH get with the program, call Bill Gates. I’m sure he has an idea that will work that will not jeopardize the security of private/business emails & phone calls.

facebook isn’t next, already been there done that. I am glad he is moving the presidency into the 21st century instead of going backwards, I love his web site and weekly addresses too, very updated and helpful, feels like he is really keeping the public informed and involved (and I didn’t even vote for him)

Posted by: guest | January 22, 2009, 3:32 pm 3:32 pm

I think it is a fine idea to allow him to keep his email after all he is still human. Just because he is the President does not cut him off from civilization and he may have distant relatives as do I that he keeps in touch with via email. Will you just leave him alone and let him do his job. I feel very good about the next four years and I think he is capable of changing this economy so let him be to do so.

Posted by: Andrea Michaud | January 22, 2009, 3:34 pm 3:34 pm

I have to agree with Rita; Obama’s main appeal is his ability to communicate effectively. If he wants to keep his Blackberry, let him. He knows the risks. He’s a big boy, he can take care of himself.
And besides, this is the 21st Century. I like having a tech-savvy President. Probably the main reason that the previous presidents didn’t email is because either it wasn’t available, or because they couldn’t click their way out of a paper bag.

I think he should be a mature enough person to give up the blackberry. He has enough to deal with and not worry about his blackberry like a teenager. What are we in for? God bless America. We need so much of God’s blessings more than ever before.

Why he acts like spoiled kid?
The worst is they all spoil him also.
That’s what you call it ” a golden boy”
oh,,he is just very very lucky guy.

Both the article and the comments spread a lot of confusion on this issue.
Google “siprnet mobile device” to see for yourselves: there is a much better alternative, a truly secure mobile device he can use on the government’s -secure- counterpart to the Internet, SIPRTnet. THAT is what he and his senior staff should be using.

Posted by: MattJ | January 22, 2009, 3:50 pm 3:50 pm

Those of you opposed to this must not own a blackberry or smartphone. Adults who own them USE them for WORK, not texting like giddy school girls. It is the 21st century, and this a tool for Obama. Keeping in touch and being able to respond immediately is the purpose of the device. I think the President would benefit from this more than anyone!

Posted by: John | January 22, 2009, 3:53 pm 3:53 pm

Smart!
Obama needs his blackberry for more than email I’m sure. I mean when he is away that is his private contact to his loving wife and beautiful daughters. I know the naysayers are use to the old dudes in the office that didn’t even know how to change a lightbulb because the maids did it for them all their rich silverspooned lives. Hell if Bill Clinton was in office now he would be saying the samething. He came into office when the cell phones & internet was still new, they were not used for everyday use like today.
The president should be able to use a highly secured website & secured cell phone that will disable anytime sensitive information is being texted. They do it at companies blocking sites and there is technology for cell phones to able him to use it.

Posted by: not spoiled | January 22, 2009, 3:55 pm 3:55 pm

I’m just happy that we now have a President that knows how to use the internets and the google. I am sure if he is texting someone and a national emergency occurs he will have the common sense to stop immediately. He will not continue for seven minutes.

Here are my concerns about this, first who is going to make the encryption, and security software? China, Korea, India, or who knows where? If we are to protect US Interests with technology that ultimately were created overseas, are we really protecting the interests of the country by doing this? Secondly someone has to be able to ensure that he, Obama himself doesnt and cant download anything that could ultimately pilsh information regarding our national interests, security etc. As most of us know, if its connected it is vunerable to be hacked. Just because one door isnt open doesnt mean there are not hundereds if not thousands of other doors that just might. And just because the “security” is in place, there was an article on MSNBC just the other day regarding some Antiwhatever ultimately being able to take control remotely over any computer. Is it such a good idea now?

Posted by: Chris in New York | January 22, 2009, 3:59 pm 3:59 pm

Bad idea! Concerns about e-mail security, he faces the Presidential Records Act, which puts his correspondence in the official record and ultimately up for public review.
I have seen adults using this for WORK and it’s a constant distraction.

Posted by: Jackie | January 22, 2009, 4:04 pm 4:04 pm

So now I mentioned Software, lets metnion Hardware for just a moment. 99% of all circut boards, chipsets, and devices are made overseas. Who is to say that that hardware doesnt have preprogramed encoded BIOS designed to store, transmit, or distroy any infomation chosen by a remote location by the maker of the device, or better yet a subcontractor for the maker.. Not to be parinoid, but it is something to think about. Reality folks we are so very reliant upon technology that isnt ours, that we could ultimately plug our selves in and find our selves unplugged in a hurry. Is it such a good idea now?

Posted by: Chris in New York | January 22, 2009, 4:08 pm 4:08 pm

I agree with those that believe that hackers will find a way! Let’s face it the Internet has proven pitfalls! Also cell phone use of any kind can be distracting. Our new President has not learned all the protocol of being the President!

Posted by: Mary J Clayton | January 22, 2009, 4:43 pm 4:43 pm

I just hope it won’t distract him and gets addicted of it.
Lots of people just can’t control themselves.
They even use it while they are driving.

Posted by: catleya | January 22, 2009, 4:48 pm 4:48 pm

This IS the 21st Century and that’s why there are plenty of people out there that are probably already working on how to hack into his Blackberry! I say if it ain’t broke…why fix it. He’s the president now and needs to follow security measures that are tried and true. It’s just another way to spend tax payers money on programming him a hack proof phone. He’s only thinking of himself…not the country.

IMPEACH Obama!!!!!!!!!
He is a Crackberry Addict!!!!!!!

I think that people forget not only is he president but president’s still should have a personnel life as well away from the media, so why not have a blackberry so he can keep in touch with family and friends, also just don’t use it offically, just for his personal use.

Posted by: dorothy marks | January 22, 2009, 6:16 pm 6:16 pm

so u say impeach President Obama, well than u should lock up every person who uses a blackberry, plus people are intitle to their own personal life why take that from him, are u ceazy?

LOL and so it begins, the calls for impeachment and its only his 3rd day…. I guess Patricio supported all the trillions of dollars wasted on phoney information that led to the deaths of thousands of Americans. But then again perhaps he (Patricio) would rather be microchipped, tracked, and eleminated when deemed unviable. Reality folks unplug yourselves from all this information trading, go outside look at the stars, look at the sky, and wonder just why it is we are here. Peace be with all.

Posted by: Chris in New York | January 22, 2009, 6:38 pm 6:38 pm

It’s a bad idea.. all it will take is ONE off-hand remark blown out of proportion and he could be in big trouble ….or get the U.S. into big trouble.

Posted by: ellsbells930 | January 22, 2009, 6:56 pm 6:56 pm

Geez, some of you must have believed he would be denied anything!
He’s not used to that. Look at his choice for Treasury. Can’t handle his own taxes, so of course Obama puts him in charge of the IRS.
So the Indulged One gets to keep his toy. Can’t wait until a truly intelligent 12-year-old hacker pulls out his info…

Posted by: LaughingCynic | January 22, 2009, 7:09 pm 7:09 pm

Quite honestly, who cares about the blackberry? After the multitude of gutless executive orders wonder wimp signed today, basically gutting our intelligence departments ability to extract information from terrorists, the ability to hold terrorists safely, etc. we have a lot more to be concerned with than his fricking blackberry.
Can’t wait until Khalid Sheikh Mohammed can’t be repatrioted to Pakistan, we put him on trial here, he gets off like OJ, and then blows up more innocent people. Yeah, continue to worry about the gutless wonder’s ability to use an insecure blackberry. That’s where we really need to focus our attention.

Posted by: TxBoB | January 22, 2009, 7:15 pm 7:15 pm

Release a bunch of dangerous terrorists for two seconds, spend rest of day worrying about Blackberry…Good to see you on top of things, Mr.President! How’s the Iraq thing going. And the 7,000 other promises you made?

The best part of the whole discussion, whether or not he keeps the blackberry, was that he wants to be connected at the grass roots. I think Facebook is a good place for that, on the Blackberry or online at the Whitehouse. What happened to positive, constructive criticism? He wants to hear from us – so respectfully tell HIM what you think.

Posted by: Kelleigh | January 22, 2009, 9:04 pm 9:04 pm

Don’t believe them when they say they have made it secure. They’re lying. Sure, the mathematical encryption routines are rock solid. The vulnerability is always in the device and server, which get access to the decrypted version of the messages and recipient handles.

Posted by: Abby B. | January 22, 2009, 9:54 pm 9:54 pm

You are missing the point. Keeping and using his blackberry is dangerous. The enemy could hack into his blackberry’s signal and know where he is at, and perhaps use that knowlege to kill him. How do you think Isreal killed some terrorists? It’s the phone, stupid.

Posted by: Sandy | January 22, 2009, 10:19 pm 10:19 pm

Take the toy away. If he pouts, send him to bed without his supper. When he gets his priorities straight, let him out. Works with most kids.

Posted by: Obie Gyn | January 22, 2009, 11:04 pm 11:04 pm

You miss the other point too, Sandy, that Israel could make it because the phone was surely not the one used by the US President! No security details at all, etc. Well, if you think that US is incapable of securing President Obama’s blackberry, then why they let him continue to use it? It’s the security system attached that matters, stupido…

Posted by: Pepi Hardiyanto | January 22, 2009, 11:07 pm 11:07 pm

Pepi, no device is so secure that it can’t be hacked. But if President Obama wants to play games with his safety, then that is his choice.

Posted by: Sandy | January 23, 2009, 2:26 am 2:26 am

Sandy, so the news been telling us that it’s going to be a different gizmo than the usual blackberry.. To good to be true?

Posted by: Pepi Hardiyanto | January 23, 2009, 6:43 am 6:43 am

Wow, some of you guys watch too many movies. Any device is hackable, sure. So is any security protocol. That guy who crashed a plane on the White House lawn obviously found a weakness in the secret service’s security protocol. The technology is mature enough to be adequately secured. People are always the weakest link in a security system anyway, not the technology. He’s not going to be picking up a phone at the local Verizon store and he’s not going to be texting while the world’s on fire anymore than he’ll be doing the NY Times crossword puzzle when the world’s on fire. Even if you don’t like him, you have to admit the guy is smart and it’s in his own interest to keep us safe. Quit worrying so much about the boogeyman and enjoy your own lives. Its good to see the White House updating a little to come more in-line with the times.

Posted by: Ernest | January 23, 2009, 8:57 am 8:57 am

lets be serious…its a good idea. He gets to communicate through the most secure platform on the market and can add additional security. if hes going to communicate, this is the way to do it. Blackberry are in the hands of every major government agency in the US…they wouldnt be there if it wasnt tested.

Posted by: bob | January 23, 2009, 9:17 am 9:17 am

To Art in Chicago:
Are your serious? Let Bill Gates Help with Security?

Posted by: anony | January 23, 2009, 9:46 am 9:46 am

It will give all those idle hackers out there something to do…

Posted by: Kathy | January 23, 2009, 11:56 am 11:56 am

I THINK LIKE ALL OTHER PRESIDENTS HE SHOULD HAVE TO GIVE UP HIS BLACKBERRY. THE HACKERS WILL HAVE A NEW JOB TO TRY AND GET INTO THE PRESIDENTS EMAILS.

Posted by: NATALIE S | January 23, 2009, 12:29 pm 12:29 pm

But shouldn’t the President operate at a higher level…
Are you joking? Finally we have a president that is in touch with the people. I for one like the idea of the president in touch with technology and not making comments like “The Internets” or “The Google”. And why not Facebook or at least a weekly blog? Is that much different than a TV address? Oh no have people read something instead of watching it on TV, cats and dogs living together! It will be complete anarchy!

Posted by: Nick | January 23, 2009, 12:42 pm 12:42 pm

Get a life! do you really think that he is going to talk about secret information on it. He is the President of the United States and he didn’t get into that office because he was an air head. Give him some credit on what and how he plans to use it.

Posted by: Lin | January 23, 2009, 8:24 pm 8:24 pm

This goes to show how much folks really know about the Blackberry System. Blackberries do not have to operate through the Research in Motion servers. You can build your own using RIM software and secure it as much or as little as you wish. I’m quite sure that the White House Communications Office is quite qualified to secure anything they wish and the Blackberry is very easy to secure. It’s simply a matter of changing the SIM chip. Just like on a Blackberry World Edition you can change from CDMA encoding to GSM encoding you can also change the level of security on the Blackberry. He also can use several levels of filtering on email.
All of this talk about his wanting to use technology to communicate and what he can and can’t do is pure speculation.
The White House Communications Office will explain to him what needs to be done to accomplish what he wants and they WILL get it done.

Posted by: Bill | January 23, 2009, 9:24 pm 9:24 pm

I just read that the computers at the white house are outdated models and you want President Obama to give up his blackberry which is the newest technology. He has two daughters and a wife he may need to keep in touch with .Let the man have his phone and ability to email. He knows it will be seen at some time and I am sure knows the risk involved

Posted by: jojobo1 | January 23, 2009, 10:50 pm 10:50 pm

I’m sure the person who is responsible for signing Executive Orders is capable of figuring out what NOT to send over his BlackBerry. Personally I believe if you’re not in the meeting with the folks developing a plan to make this work for the President, you don’t know enough to be able to say this is the wrong choice.
