The Morning Meeting: Frozen Country, Bin Laden’s Message, Whither Geithner & A U.S. Official Says “Torture”

Several times yesterday folks here made the point — "So it’s freezing in North Dakota? It’s always freezing in North Dakota!" Well — it’s rarely this cold (wind chills in the 50-below range) — and now we have Arctic weather coming east. Here in New York we are told temperatures will be lower than they have been in nearly fifteen years. (That news prompted one editor’s child to say, over breakfast, "Does that mean the coldest it’s been in my life?")

Messages from Osama Bin Laden have been fewer and further between lately — a fact that keeps CIA and NSC types (and journalists) busy trying to figure out what if anything it means. This morning came word of a fresh audio tape from Bin Laden — a challenge to Barack Obama, and plenty of commentary about the Gaza conflict. Intel folks believe it is authentic — the first such message in seven months.

Other stories we’re watching today: The Citigroup breakup and its implications; tea leaves from the Fed "beige book"; the cloud over Treasury Secretary nominee Tim Geithner — which we reported on last night (still no indication it’s more than a hiccup en route to the cabinet post); the use of phosphorus as a weapon in Gaza; and — for the first time — a Bush Administration member acknowledges that a person in U.S. custody was — her word — "tortured."

Stay tuned…

“I fail to understand it. After 7 years of attack, this fugitive(Osama bin Laden) is still alive!!!!”
REMEMBER, BILL CLINTON could not kill OSAMA when whe was walking around in the open. :)
But, I did some Googling and here is my opinion of what I have been reading.
During the Russian war with Afghanistan, we had quite a few CIA operatives trained in the Afghan life and inside the right circles of the “Future” Al Queda. But, after the Soviet Union lost their rear and due to Serious Cut backs in defense spending (people do not understand that this just doesn’t mean the Military, this also means cuts to paying operatives), we lost all of these operatives. By what I read right after 911 and our theatre of operations was only in Afhanistan, WE DID NOT have ENOUGH people to even be able to read their language to disect all the intercepts we had. SO, by the time we were able to read most of this, Osama was gone. Plus, as I said a little ways up, WE DID NOT HAVE THE OPERATIVES to give us the INTEL we needed to find him and what I understand, we still DO NOT. You have to understand that about all the Warlords in Southern Iraq are mostly STRICT ISLAM and have been living under the Taliban Law for years. Those Warlords that have been allies to the West in the past, now want payment and favors for their help which I don’t think the New Afghan Government wants to give them.
I could GO ON AND ON if you would like.
Plus, I truly believe with Osama hiding like the COWARD that he truly is better off for us then killing or capturing him. Either of these will CAUSE a SERIOUS resurgent of Islamic backlash in my opinion. It is proven, he can’t do anything. We have cut off about all of his communications.
But, hey, like I said. The info as to the whys are out there if you want to search for it.

Saddam Hussein who threatened to kill Bush Senior, his life was terminated. But Osama bin Laden who claimed 3,000 lives was left alone and he is still enjoying breathing fresh air.

Rita – Yep, but remember our sanctions on Iraq, as admitted by Albright on national TV, killed 500,000 Iraqis during Clinton’s administration. That is a whole lot more than 3,000, and it helps to explain at least one reason that Muslims continue to protect this guy.

The terrorist are openly mocking Obama because they know he is weak an inexperienced. It seems Obama still believes that if he is nice to the terrorists then they will reciprocate.
Quite frankly, he is a fool to believe this. Any show of weakness, demonstrated through nuanced responses, will only invite more attacks. Bin Laden correctly compares Obama to Bush in an unfavorable light, at least when it comes to the war on terror and radical Islam.

Ajax,
(I think you meant to write “the Warlords in Southern Afghanistan”, but apart from that..)
I disagree that Bin Laden should be left alone. Al Qaeda are still bombing embassies and planning new mass murders. And every time Bin Laden manage to post a message it is a slap in the face of his enemies that emboldens his followers.
And don’t underestimate the power of words. These messages are heard by his followers and by youngsters in jeopardy of sliding into extremism.

In my heart, I agree with you 100%. But, the fact of the matter is, if we capture him and put him on trial, he has a right to SPIT OUT ALL THE CRAP he wants to and has ABC NEWS TO BE THERE to make sure the world hears it.
If we kill him and MAKE SURE THE WORLD KNOWS, then he will be a Martyr.
So, weigh out the choices. Is he better off hiding in his cave and getting nothing done, or splattered ALL OVER THE WORLD NEWS and GETTING A RIGHT TO SPEAK OUT????
The best thing that could happen is he just die in his cave and NOTHING IS EVER FOUND of him.
OBSCURITY is where he needs to go. :)

You are correct, that is what I meant. Sorry about that.

I guess my question is, if we were to Capture Osama, where will he be tried???
What rights will he have to defend himself? How much Money will he have at his disposal for his defense and Lord at ALL THE DEFENSE LAWYERS lining up to get their name in history defending him.
I don’t think trying him in this Country WITH OUR LAWS that it is a SLAM DUNK CASE like most people think it will be.
How long would the Trial GO ON?
What contact with the Outside World wil lhe have?
Could you see the US and WORLD NEWS going on through out this???
Would he get more AIR TIME then he already has?
I just see Criminal after Criminal in this country getting off free and serving no time. Not sure how it would go.
