Cheney ‘Furious’ at Bush, Could This Be?

ABC’s Stu Schutzman from New York: Cheney "furious" at Bush, could this be? Sure could. There appears to be some new evidence that the eight year political marriage between the two men may have hit a stone wall shortly before the Bush Presidency ended last month. At the time there was little doubt the Vice President was upset at his boss’ refusal to pardon his long-time aide and friend, Scooter Libby. Libby was convicted of lying to a grand jury about the Valerie Plame CIA leak affair. The President commuted Libby’s jail sentence, but refused to go any further. Cheney publicly disagreed. "Scooter Libby is one of the most capable and honorable men I’ve ever known," Cheney told the Weekly Standard. "He was the victim of a serious miscarriage of justice and I strongly believe that he deserved a presidential pardon. Obviously, I disagree with President Bush’s decision." Now, according to today’s New York Daily News, it sounds like Cheney was more than just upset at Bush, he was outraged and not shy about communicating it. Reporter Thomas Defrank paints a portrait of a relentless Dick Cheney refusing to take no for an answer. "He tried to make it happen right up until the very end," said one Cheney associate to the News. "He went to the mat and came back and back and back at Bush," said another. "He’s furious at Bush," said yet another. John Dean of Watergate infamy, (remember "a cancer on the Presidency" etc.), offered an interesting scenario in the Daily Beast.com. Dean, who was a consultant to director Oliver Stone for the movie "Nixon" suggests Stone should have waited to make the film "W" until after Bush left office. In Dean’s version, dialogue like the following could have been included: CHENEY
"You’ve not responded to my memo on Scooter Libby. I think—" BUSH
"Whooooe. Let’s not go there big fella. I told you when I commuted Scooter, keeping his sorry bleep out of jail, that I wouldn’t pardon him. I haven’t changed my mind. That was your bleeped-up scheme that backfired. My daddy really chewed my bleep out for revealing a CIA covert agent. You went too far, big guy. Strikes me, Scooter’s such a bleep poor liar you’re lucky ole Fitz, Fitz what-ever-the-hell-his-name-is(federal prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald) didn’t nail your bleep too." You get it, a frustrated President living in the shadow of his Vice President for years and now exacting his revenge. But questions about the status of his Vice President have dogged George Bush throughout his Presidency. Who was really making the decisions? Whose policies were really being carrying out? In essence, who was really pulling the strings? Historians will no doubt mull these questions over for generations. They will attempt to dissect the dynamics of the relationship between George Bush and Dick Cheney for years to come. Will it reveal a strong Chief Executive firmly in charge or a weak acolyte fronting for an all powerful Vice President and a cadre of 80′s ideologues. The verdict in the case of Cheney v Bush is a ways away…stay tuned.

They should both be in prison.

For all the bad things that our 43rd president did this is one good thing he did at the very end to not pardon Scooter Libby. The sad thing about this whole story is that the man whom should have been pleading for a pardon is the vice president. This is one of the most angry, paranoid and evil politicians to ever live in the White House.A place next to Nixon would be an honor for him.One last thing to say is to Scooter Libby.I feel very sorry that you did have the guts to speak out against this person and instead chose to defend him.

I always knew somewhere Bush had some guts. Too bad he did not find them sooner. Pay back is a pain aint it Cheney.

Cheney, “Scooter a decent and honorable man”….This is Cheney speaking! Scooter “outed” a CIA operative. Is he serious? Cheney should go to jail. Hope Scooter tell it all. I guess you’re “honorable” if you do what Cheney saids. Who the hell do he think he is?

Posted by: sngeorgia | February 17, 2009, 12:33 pm 12:33 pm

Poor scooter, the fall guy, just doing the bidding of his evil boss cheney, and promised that he would get a full pardon!! Alas, nothing came to pass, and just one small revenge from GW to cheney, for running the WH as his empire (never mind that GW was too stoopid to do it himself!) and now that all has passed, scooter is still unpardoned, and cheney needed another heart-fix due to tremendous anger, and GW happy to be clearing “bushes” and burning them all, including Jeb’s chances. Retribution anyone?

Posted by: Karen | February 17, 2009, 12:34 pm 12:34 pm

Well, as Cheney is so fond of saying, “So?” I think Bush did the right thing. Libby was working and taking orders from someone who thought he was above the law.

“Scooter Libby is one of the most capable and honorable men I’ve ever known,” I know Wyoming is a kind of sparsely populated state. Perhaps Cheney should venture out more. Or is it that no decent human being wiould get anywhere near the man. Hark I think I hear the rasping sound of Darth Cheney ..

“Strikes me, Scooter’s such a bleep poor liar you’re lucky ole Fitz, Fitz what-ever-the-hell-his-name-is(federal prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald) didn’t nail your bleep too.” Perhaps Bush’s mist eloquant statement to date.

How quickly we all forget. We are debating who called the shots, Cheney or Bush. For the first 7 years of Bush/Cheney there is a good chance the most influential man in our government was Karl Rove.
He is a political genious in the way that Hitler was a genious. But Karl’s failing was he couldn’t protect the house of cards he had built for the whole 8 years so he bailed.
Smart move. Everyone now debates the awful Bush administration with rarely a mention of Rove.

Posted by: Bob | February 17, 2009, 1:51 pm 1:51 pm

Tsk, tsk ABC News, is this news? To have hearsay? We know that Valerie Plame LIED to the Senate Intelligence Committee. She was NOT a covert agent. Armitage was the ONE who outed her, not Libby. Sure makes it okay to not investigate Clinton’s pardons, right? Libby was the left’s scapegoat because they couldn’t get Bush or Cheney. Shame on Ambassador Wilson…God knows the truth! I can sympathize with Cheney, having an innocent person be convicted is a hard pill to swallow. Having the left lie their pants off in regards to Iraq. The left as we know, has no morals.

Posted by: justrighttoo | February 17, 2009, 1:53 pm 1:53 pm

According to Richard Armitage, as told to Woodward, it was Joe Wilson himself who outted his wife. In any case, Armitage was spilling the beans BEFORE Scooter Libbey – but he was never really a player in this – especially in the press, ABC why is that?

Posted by: Chas | February 17, 2009, 1:54 pm 1:54 pm

I think Valerie Plame should be charged with lying under oath to Congress. For that matter, Clinton should be in jail. All he did was pay a fine and loose his law license…what crap. If there is anyone who’s lying, it’s the dems in Congress saying they were hoodwinked by Bush on evidence with Iraq. What a load of lard! These leftists have no shame and wouldn’t know the truth if it bit em in the arse!

Posted by: Nelle | February 17, 2009, 2:08 pm 2:08 pm

Cheney needs to be prosecuted even more than George W. Bush. Cheney is a truly evil, criminal man who has no heart, no ethics and is a total fascist swastika man. He has committed numerous felonies, not the least of which was the outing of Valerie Plame and his lying about the WMD’s in Iraq.
Bill Clinton almost got impeached over one lie about Monica Lewinsky. This guy committed treason repeatedly and he has so far gotten off scott free. There will be no confidence in the American justice system until all these major white collar corporate and government criminals are held accountable and there ceases to be a double standard in the administration of justice.

Because Armitage didn’t lie to the Special Prosecuter and Libby did? You may out a CIA agent accidently, but if you lie about your actions to an investigator, you are supposed to go to jail.

Posted by: itcontinues | February 17, 2009, 2:17 pm 2:17 pm

JL – If you want Cheney to be persecuted, then he needs to get in line behind Clinton. Clinton let the first bombing of the World Trade Center be a criminal matter, he allowed the U.S. to not go after Bin Laden. So, if anyone has ANY blood on their hands, it’s BILL CLINTON! And for YOUR info, he lied under oath and served NO sentence. Libby, supposedly lied to FBI agents and was sentenced to jail. Fitzgerald KNEW who outed Plame from the get go!!!!!!
Now, you do the math!!!! YOu are stating that if a President lies, it’s okay, but if it’s a republican, it’s NOT okay. The ONLY PEOPLE WHO LIED WERE VALERIE PLAME AND JOE WILSON. Please read the Senate Intell. Committee’s findings on this….I hope your eyes will be opened!!!!!!

The way I remember it, Libby didn’t “out” Plame, Richard Armitage did. I’ve heard Rush Limbaugh and others make the Cheney argument – Libby shouldn’t have gone to jail because no crime regarding the outing of Valerie Plame was committed. I’m pretty sure, however that Libby was convicted of lying to a grand jury, and that is a crime – it doesn’t matter what the lie was about. As Fitzgerald said in a press conference, they try people for that all the time. If they didn’t, people would lose the incentive to tell the truth even when they didn’t want to, and the American Justice system would fall apart.
Cheney apparently believes that he and his buddies should be above the law.

The presidents don’t live up to

Never forget that Cheney – who cut his political teeth as a staff assistant to Richard Nixon – has stated publicly that Nixon was within his “rights” not only to cover up Watergate, but even to have ordered the burglary and bugging in the first place!
As assistant to White House Chief of Staff Donald Rumsfeld under the administration of Gerald Ford, Cheney proposed and defended a number of likely unlawful retributive measures to be taken against reporter Seymour Hersh (who broke the My Lai massacre and other stories) over a news article the administration disapproved of.
As SecDef under Bush Sr., Cheney was right in the middle of the decision and the frantic telephone call which stopped General Norman Schwarzkopf’s headlong race into Baghdad and the imminent capture of Saddam Hussein himself. Yet in 1991, Cheney was visibly angered to discover that 9/11 DID NOT grant him an immediate excuse to invade Iraq and kill the same Saddam Hussein! WHAT HAD CHANGED?
As Vice President, Cheney repeatedly augured that the President and indeed the entire Executive Branch was immune to the Constitution and could do whatever was “necessary and expedient” to the defense of the country and of the Presidency. Yet when this defense failed him, Cheney tried to cast himself as a member of the Legislative Branch and claim legislative immunity to investigation of his activities!
Cheney was instrumental in drafting and gaining passage of the “John Warner Defense Authorization Act of 2007″ which unconstitutionally “authorizes” the President to declare martial law and suspend habeas corpus (and so effectively also the Constitution) pretty much upon a whim.
Cheney is a ruthless and arrogant man – a real-life Henry Potter who believes rules are for “lesser” people and who takes pleasure in acting – not as a leader – but as a puppet-master pulling the strings as others do his dirty work. And I believe Cheney is a sociopath every bit as vicious as Drew Peterson – capable of “justifying” even the most heinous acts as “necessary” or “expedient” and of casting himself and his friends as “victims” (as long as those friends remain useful to him.)
The very most frightening thing about Cheney is that he spent eight years so very close to the nuclear codes!

Dear God, thank you so much for getting rid of the two clowns.
But why of why did you feel the need to replace them with two new ones?
Sometimes I think your sense of humor is twisted.
Next time please give us two businessmen or two moms or two whatevers,
Anything but clowns.

Go back to the 2000 election period when Bush Senior spoke of then chosen wonder boy “Cheney” for Bush Jr VP, and senior said in so many words: “Great pick, and let’s see if John Kerry can pick a VP better than Cheney”.
What does Bush Senior think of Cheney now over 8 years later. I’m sure he’s not thinking Cheney was such a great pick after all, especially when Bush Sr was the CIA Director once. I heard from another CIA agent that the outing was justified, but that CIA agent is no longer employed — he was fired. So outing a CIA agent is a big NO NO, especially to get revenge for political polarization. Bush Jr will always be flawed, and he just chose to “bleep” with Cheney as Clinton “bleeped” Monica — no diff, but poor judgment.

OH PROPALIN – You must shop for more intellegencia. Geo. W was handed a $12 billion dollar surplus in 01! That’s SURPLUS… He left the country with something north (I should say South) of $138 billion dollar deficit! That’s only $17 billion a year – or in simple terms- W spent 1.5 BILLION a month ! Great job! Please don’t touch my wallet George.

Move on.
Don’t you have bigger things to think about?
You can write all kinds of senarios with what went on.
You can write about Obama, too.
Do you not think we have bigger issues at hand now? Or do you want to live in a soap opera?
It’s not helping our problems one bit.
Focus on what’s happening now.
Focus on the big picture and the details. As they say, ‘the devil is in the details’.
Don’t get sideswiped.

Did you not notice that Bush/Cheney had already made agreements before even the 2000 election? (Or whatever that travesty was).
Did any one notice that Cheney shoots you in the face when you cross him?
Cheney angry? Not at all, he’s really quite mad.

At least politics in the United States haven’t changed since the earliest days of our fair republic. Everything from both sides is expressed in absolutes and is personal. No matter who is talking, the “other” Party is evil incarnate. From the days of Adams and Jefferson – the “other” party has been wicked and selfish and it’s candidate – the personification of the basest and most foul individual, lacking all character and moral turpitude.
The problem is that in the days of Adams and Jefferson, there were real differences between the two parties. Today both parties change their spots to fit the latest public opinion polls. They are different sides of the same coin. “Coin” being the operative word, for each party is more interested in the money, (and power), than the principals that they respectively espouse. It is the rare politico who returns home, (unless he or she has to), if there is a nice cushy position with a lobbying concern inside The Beltway. Where are all the past Senate Majority and Minority Leaders? The former Speakers of the House and various ex-committee chairs? Virtually all of these sure haven’t gone into private practice. to dabble in the various US Codes that they helped to mangle. Nope, they get paid to help foreign countries, multinational corporations, and whoever can pay their “coin”, how to get around all those laws and how to get special ones enacted.

Until the Bush administration is held to some serious accountability, this country is at risk for more of the same criminal activities, or worse! A president, and his administration must never again consider themselves above the law. The old axiom that “absolute power corrupts absolutely” can be used to describe the Bush White House. People need to go to jail. Period. That is the best way to discourage corruption going forward.

In Bush’s defense, He probably didn’t know when he was lying. I never quite figured out how Cheney got his arm up there to control old Bush. The common thread of our political history is the requirement that they either come from a wealthy political family or have a law degree (or both) Like our lawyers are trained to lie as a condition of employment so are politicians required to lie and to protect those who cover the community lies. Can’t you just imagine how Cheney told Scooter to cover me and I’ll take care of you. Hell, he didn’t even have to load the shotgun. If “W” had only had another eight years of education, he might have made a fair politician or maybe become a lobby “doer”. Thank God that is now history, although the damage will most likely take twenty or thirty years to overcome.
Of more concern is just why an otherwise intelligent man, and one who is a wonderful orator, would wish to serve as President. Regardless of what he can accomplish President Obama will have many grey hairs upon his head when this is over.
If we do not see a non-partisian effort between the Democratic leadership and the Rebublician party, we need to march as a “Five Million Man March” onto the Senate Steps. When they can park a cab in Washington D.C. let alone drive one perhaps these dumb asses will start to listen.
I just hope they can stop the in-fighting long enough to get about the business of running this Nation and remove us from the listing of Western Idiots who have taken the world economy down by unregulated investment banking and securities fraud.
Good luck Mr. President and may
God Bless America once again.

How do we come out ahead by holding anyone accountable for the acts of egomaniacal decisions and mis-deeds.
Folks, this is like suing ourselves.
We can’t change what was done and those who committed these acts will forever be labeled by both the taxpayers and the political world.
We know clinton lied about private indescretions. We know Cheney was a manipulating political egomaniac with more power than he should have ever been given. Likewise Rove and Rumsfeld. When ego driven, weak minded men are put in the position of leadership not once but twice, we, the taxpayers pay the price. When we grill a married, smart ego driven, legally trained president, over his marital infidelities and impeach him for lying about it, who picked up the tab? What was the cost to this Nation?
It is time to make more than loud noises after the fact. We need form more and stronger political action commities who can tell our political leaders up front what we expect and what the enormous cost will be if they screw-up. They can’t come home. They will be listed as pariahas and beneath th picutures with faces, will be all the mistakes they have made and all the lies they have told.
We have to stop laying the costs on ourselves. Crooks are crooks, liars are liars and most politicans are both.
