Stock Market Trading at April 1997 Levels. Remember Way Back Then?

Feb 23, 2009 2:12pm

The stock market today is trading at levels not seen since April 1997.  That’s the headline (so far) today.  It’s all about the big banks.  Just how unhealthy are they?  When the government gets in and looks over their books what are they going to find?  Should certain beleaguered banks being taken over by the government?  Lots of questions hanging over the markets.  But we digress.

The point of this blog was to take a little stroll down memory lane.  If the markets are trading at April 1997 levels let’s take a second and remind what all was going on back during that month?  A little perspective on the ground given up by your investments these past months.

April, 1997:

Tiger Woods became golf’s youngest victor at the Masters Tournament.

A 126 day hostage standoff ended at the Japanese Ambassador’s residence in Lima, Peru.  Commandos stormed in rescuing 71 people.

Andrew Cunanan began his run of murders which stretch until the July killing of Gianni Versace.

And finally, Ellen DeGeneres’ character came out of the closet on the comedy "Ellen".
