World Newser Question Of The Day: $igns Of The Time$
What’s the most interesting sign of the economic mess you’ve seen, or heard about?
Last night we reported on the growing number of senior citizens who’ve moved from retirement back to the workplace. Today we read in The New York Times about a fancy restaurant in Prague that has "unveiled a novel approach this week to lure business clients to one of his upscale dining rooms: let diners pay what they like." Doesn’t matter how much of the scrumptious lunch buffet you have, the owner believes executives won’t want to appear cheap by paying nothing; and that even if they do, they’ll come back as paying customers once things turn around. "During an economic crisis you need to be creative," he says.
So — what’s your most interesting, or dramatic, sign of the times?

Barney Frank and Chris Dodd do need to be held accountable at some point.
I don’t see it happening.
These two have managed to dodge any blame in all of this mess.
Why? If they were republicans, you can be sure that the media would have taken them to task.
But yet, there they sit ‘guilt-free’.
Where’s the justice in all of this?
How can we fix the problem when the media and the President fail to point out the obvious?
President Obama likes to think of himself as someone who faces the problems head-on.
Good for him. Now he must face his own party as well if anything is to change for the better.
How can a problem be fixed, if you are unable or unwilling to identify where the problem began?

I am worried the life-span will be shortened. The more we are depressed, the more the immune system becomes weak, hence be attacked by different kind of diseases and eventually cutting life short!

What I see is all the CEO’S of companies (or anyone in high power) got a little greedy and we are all paying for their mistakes. What a shame!!

I think the most interesting sign of the times I’ve seen has been the Hyundai promotion that let’s you return your car if you lose your job. That just floored me the first time I saw it. Now I’m wondering why US car makers – who we’re bailing out – aren’t following suit.

change? yeah, lets get rid of letting paulson (hank) talk about anything. he talks like a loudmoth and he more than anyone could have shifted the bad moves to another side, but he chose instead to line his pockets with 35 + million bucks in bonuses before he jumped over to make bad moves in the Bush administration. how do we get rid of this guy and the people he mentored like Thain and Geithner and Blankfein who took billions in bonuses when they had lost the American taxpayer so much money??

People are coming to the Library. Whether it’s to update their resume, look for work, increase their knowledge about a particular subject, or just get something to entertain themselves, we’ve seen a large increase in usage. Patrons need their libraries now more than ever.

Sign of the times? That as horrible as the news media makes the economy out to be, I cannot get a seat for dinner at my favorite restaurant and the malls are packed. Let’s hear the good news on the broadcasts, not all the gloom and doom. Maybe things would pick up!

The interesting sign is people were spending too much, too fast, too soon with too little. The old saying must be right: ” Save for a rainy day”

President Obama appointed people who have failed to pay their taxes and ignored the IRS when they were caught. And the American public sits back.
One was even confirmed!
Would a jail term be more in order?

Today I saw a man shopping at Sav-a-Lot {discount Grocery store} and when he left he was driving a Hummer!

It’s interesting watching how the car dealers are handling everything.
A large used car dealership that fronts on an interstate near here started parking cars in a checkerboard pattern about two months ago, so the lot still looked full, sort of. I went by it again just the other day. Now they use the checkerboard pattern for two rows of cars facing the expressway. Behind that, a solid line of cars; behind that, nothing in the remaining three quarters of the lot.
A related Hummer dealership next door has a line of 15 or so Hummers parked facing the expressway. The rest of the lot is empty.

Sign of the times is people of America learning that in the past economy they could have what they wanted when they wanted it but in todays economy that no longer works. It will be a tough lesson to learn but learn we will.

I was wondering when someone was going to ask this question so I could post the following:
As a retail yarn store owner, I have seen this industry thrive. I have seen my sales soar which I think is a product of more crafters staying home doing needle work to reduce the fear of our economy and spend less money on gas and eating out. It is a well known fact that knitting reduces stress not only for women but for men too. Never forget that there are businesses that are doing well right now. Laura from North Carolina

What I find interesting is what’s not being said. With President Clinton in office we started off shoring blue collar manufacturing jobs. Today major US companies continue to lay off Americans and send their white collar jobs overseas. How can the government allow this to continue! What’s the unemployment rate?!!

When a business has to make cuts we have to lay employee’s off, cut our spending and cut our pay and salaries to save money. But, our government “Congressmen Senators and the president” they haven’t cut thier staff, salaries or expence acct. Why is that? They’re not doing there job ! They all should be fired !!!!!

I am a new teacher that is currently employed with the 2nd largest school district in Georgia. I am scared to death that I will not have a job next year and the sad thing about all of this is that for for 1st time since I have been employed in GA, this is my dream job. I want to work, but most importantly, I want to keep doing what I love. That’s teaching my outstanding students, and working with wonderful co-workers and parents.

WARNING: Wells Fargo making last ditch effort to entangle struggling homeowners into balloon rates before March 4th!
My wife and I were recently laid off. Although we had never been late on a mortgage payment, we feared that day may soon be approaching. I contacted the mortgage company, who instructed me to submit a hardship letter, an itemization of expenses, and my last 2 paystubs. They told me it would take 45 to 60 days to process. A few days later, Obama announced his plan of relief for struggling homeowners through the banks.
Interestingly, I received a phone call today (just 2 weeeks later, not 45 to 60)from Wells Fargo saying that they would only make me pay half for 6 months, if I pay the balloon payment on the 7th month! In other words, I pay half now, and on the 7th month, I owe 4,000 to make up for it! How could I possibly afford that?! I simply was looking for a short term lowering of my interest rate until I recovered, but they told me that unless I was 3 months behind on my mortgage – that’s all they’d do for me. I asked if I could think it over – they reluctantly gave me til tomorrow, and if I didn’t accept-they’d drop me from their system.
The kicker was- they told me if I was referring to Obama’s plan – that doesn’t take effect til March 4th – but my deadline was tomorrow to have an answer – or else I’d have to go through the entire process again (which I’m sure will take MUCH longer than 2 weeks to hear back). It really disturbs me that I’ve had a perfect record with my mortgage payments, and that the only way they’ll work with me is if I stopped paying them for 3 months! (Unless I wanted that ridiculous balloon payment)
Heaven forbid they give up a nickel to help a goodstanding customer!!!
I’m sure I’m not the only person in America who’s being backed into a corner from mortgage companies before March 4th.I want to warn everyone this is happening. They know that if struggling, recently laid-off homeowners are having trouble paying a normal month’s mortgage – that there’s NO WAY they’ll be able to pay back the balloon payment at the end of the term no matter how much their new job paid! This is the “slap in the face” thank you to the American taxpayer for the hundreds of millions of dollars we handed them.
BEWARE OF THEIR TACTICS!!! AND DON’T AGREE TO THESE TERMS – IT’S UNREALISTIC AND THEY KNOW IT! They just want to get you to agree on the recorded phone line so they don’t have to really work with you.

I saw the question Charles asked about the anger towards all of the highly paid CEOs and such, and once again the response was a deflection, we are all in this together. There seems to be no acknowledgement that a $50,000 per year person could have done just as well or perhaps even better than all of these high priced folks. Their focus has moved from what is good for the company and its stakeholders, to what makes the stock price go up. If you run a company so it does well and the stakeholders are happy then the stock price will generally do well. If you run the company such that the stock price goes up in the short term, it quite often is not good for the company and the stakeholders. What happens to all of the lessons the MBAs learn in school?? They seem to forget them as soon as they get into the “real” world. Ten years from now there will be a lot of MBA students laughing and shaking their heads in class, wondering how the people running these companies could have been so stupid. They took their eye off the ball is the answer.

This was the perfect question for me today!! While walking thru Costco my children and I always enjoy stopping at the different sample tables. The red plaid table clotes and elderly women in hair nets usally mean a tasty treat of something interesting. It is often a good way to get my kids to try things like smoked salmon or fine cheese. For me this economic downturn was sumed up by the very appoligetic lady sampling SPAM. I guess $ issues have gotten so bad people are actually trying to eat this stuff again! Amazing. SPAM not just a punch line anymore.

Due to a work injury, I was forced to quit working in March, 2008. I have since decided to file personal bankruptcy. The attorney jokingly told me that business is booming. I think this is a very sad commentary on our economy.

The most interesting thing that I observe are the bizarre signs of the incredible polarization — more than I have ever observed in this country — between those who have (our new so-called “upper-middle” class) and the the working poor. While many of those formerly in the middle-class are now living in their cars, those who profited from the health-care-loss, job-loss, and home-loss of those less-fortunate fellow Americans are:
1. Still paying tens of thousands of dollars for toys like motorcycles and old muscle cars
2. Still enjoying lavish vacations in exotic locations that most of us could not even began to fathom
3. Taking advantage of low real-estate prices by buying-up —on speculation — all of the bargain-priced homes in desirable locations that should be going to those who actually labor for their money.
If America’s goal is to be more like those South American countries that have nothing but a wealthy ruling class, with the poor to serve them, than we are succeeding.

Who approves these Earmarks in our government and over all these years?
Who is responsible?
Government wastes money with the spend it, or lose it mentality.
Government buys at the highest price for items when the government should buy at the best price available.
Let’s get rid of Lobbyists.
Let’s get rid of the GREED!

Vegas has been in the”bad news” column of every newspaper and media outlet, art museum closing, a mayor’s mob museum, yet one project I ran across was really innovative: The Greatest Las Vegas project”,capable of reaching hundreds of millions of sports fans, already a internet hit, and costs 1/5th the cost of that mob mess. A”fighting sports monument”, two giant boxing gloves, interactive digital archive museum, merchandise, music, it’s got it all, and could be a major draw for the city. Here’s a project capable of doing the impossible, reaching millions globally, creating jobs, making money with unique products, one of a kind marketing and brand image too. This just reminded me, that innovation takes many forms and is a sign of the times or what is needed more of now than ever. Imagination, heart, soul, and small business innovation and commitment.

I work in the child support court in Florida. The most interesting thing I have seen is non-custodial parents who have been out of work for so long that the have fallen behind in paying child support and when they are called into court on contempt itis discovered that they are now on food stamps themselves.
Parents have to support their children, but without jobs or jobs that pay a decent wage, how can they support anyone? Many parents are struggling just to keep a car and buy gas so thy can keep looking for a job or get to the low paying job they have.

The most interesting thing I have seen is how quickly the workplace has become hostile. Alliances are being formed and dirty dealing with fellow employees is on the rise. With all of the restructuring, no one knows their job anymore and we get in trouble for not doing our work which leads to insubordination, then termination with no unemployment and on and on! All the while banks are still taking lavish trips! How bout this, they don’t get a vacation when I do!

I would like to take a survey on the american people who would be willing to take 5 to 10 dollars once a year to help our ecomony get out of this debt. I would like to see my children live with less stress then we have. american people have always shown support to people in need. now all people are in need rich, poor, and middle class. everything is about “we the people” now i think we the people need to step up and not just leave it to goverment to figure it all out.

I swear I saw a sign off the highway the other day that said . . . .
“The Republic of America going out of business sale.
Sponsored by the US Congress”
Maybe my eyes were deceiving me.
Congress would never do that.
Right?

What I see is BUSINESS AS USUAL in D.C.
The government is paying the rich that ripped of the working a poor. Giving more money to the people that created the mess. Why? So they can continue to name stadiums, throw lavish parties and retreats, sponsor games, take home large paychecks and bonuses. All to be paid by the taxpayer with little recompense.
I BELIEVE, that before the government is finished giving money to Wall Street and banks, it would have been cheaper to pay off all the taxpayers debts. If our debts are paid, the banks have their money. It is as simple as that! REALLY!!!!

I give Obama an F. He is telling the American people one thing while letting Nazi Pelosi do differently in Congress.

First anyone appointed to a government should be audited by the IRS. Obama is not doing what he said he was going to do cut pork fat, appoint honest people in his cabinet work for the working man.
I am 66 yrs. old and vote in every election and I must say both parties are useless. Pelosi and Kenndy are the biggest two jokes in congress.
No money fir car companies, no money for Wall Street and insurance for kids still in school and nothing for adults.
