World Newser — Question Of The Day: What Do You Think Of The President’s Iraq Plans?
President Obama said today that the vast majority of U.S. forces in Iraq (142,000 at present) will leave the country within eighteen months — bringing the U.S. presence down to between 35 and 50 thousand. By the end of 2011, the President says those troops will be gone, too. "Let me say this as plainly as I can," Mr. Obama told a crowd of nearly 4000 marines at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. "By August 31, 2010, our combat mission in Iraq will end." Interestingly, John McCain — who lambasted candidate Obama for suggesting timetables for withdrawal — was complimentary today. And several Democrats were not — because of those 35-50,000 troops staying on. What do you think? Smart withdrawal plan? Or precipitous departure?

Happy that Obama made a date for withdraw from IRAQ. Wish it could come sooner. We had no business being in IRAQ in the first place!

Glad to see Obama taking ALL the credit for ending the war in Iraq…In reality the credit should go to Gates, McCain and Bush for pressing for the surge that OBAMA was against….

I am definitely in favor of bringing our troops home. But where are all the reservists going to get work since so many are losing their jobs? That will only put more on the unemployment list.

I’m a sophomore in high school but yet I follow up on the news and so on and from what I know about Obama’s Iraq withdrwael “idea”, I really disagree with what he is trying to. He plans on talking the troops out of Iraq which I agree with but he is placing them in Afghanistan! Why on earth would Barack want to do that?

Can’t wait until Obamie reaps the benefits of “directing” and lifting the ban on photography of our dead brothers and sisters….Folks will be knocking at his door soon on PA Ave and blaming him for Afghanistan an his weak “surge”. 50,000 troops…bet they bleed our nose all the way to the coast thanks to a weak president. They will be back and we will have to fight them here. They think in generations…we in weeks. Obama’s fault.

It had to happen sooner or later. I applaud the decision to leave and bring our troops home. Far too many lives have been lost, both Americans and Iraq’s Allies can always return if needed.

I believe Obama is letting our troops down by establishing a withdrawal date. How can you ask our troops to go into harms way, when we have told them the battle is over.
Posted by: jay | February 27, 2009, 6:47 pm 6:47 pm
The plan is a good one; however, it is nothing more than a 4 month shortening of the already agreed upon plan between former President Bush and Prime Minister Malaki of Iraq. And we are supposed to give President Obama some special credit? Give me a break.

As a Viet vet, I said then and I repeat, we should never have gotten into Iraq. But now that we are there, let B.O. move as quickly as possible. I don’t want the remaining troops hanging off helicopters as they lift off the roof of the embassy but get them out ASAP. And out of Afghanistan! It is the height of arrogance to think that we can do something that no other empire in history has been able to do. Leave them to fester within their own borders as we did with the Soviet Union. Just keep them contained. It will die on the vine.

Former President Bush had already stated troops would be withdrawn by 2011. Obama will now take credit for stating “he” brought the troops home.

It’s about time! After 6 years, over 4,000+ dead, (Not to mention the TENS-OF-THOUSANDS of dead Iraqis) and a “50 billion-dollar” war that has turned into near 1 TRILLION-dollars, George W. Shurb’s FIASCO will finally come to an end. Too bad the bleeting sheep that is the American voters didn’t realize what a liar he was! Shrub should have been impeached, tarred and feathered and rode out of Washington on a rail!

I agree with comment (by Noz) that drawdown is no different from what we would have seen from McCain or even W. It is 16 months slower than the radical rhetoric Obama used to beat Hillary in the primaries.

Campaign promises cannot be exact. The greatest leaders have found a “middle ground” of REALISTIC compromise. It is great to see that 2 such great men as Barak Obama and John McCain can agree on something and Obama continue to try to fulfill all of his campaign promises.

Finally, we’re getting out of something we never should have been in to begin with. The Bush administration couldn’t seem to bring Osama bin Laden to justice so their response was a short fun little war in the desert….six years later and billions of dollars later.

Jill—i respect what you are saying but i think it’s a bad idea to have wars just so men can be employed. there will jobs for them in the US. we will find a way to support them until they can find work. they risk their lives for us it is the least we could do for them.
nobody wins in wars, nobody. did we “win” in Iraq. will we “win” in Afghanistan?
war is very expensive and is a silent co-conspirator in our economy. we need to protect our borders and airports and leave the rest of the world alone except for humanitarian missions.

When Obama pulls out the combat troops we will still have troops in country. We pull combat troops out of Europe after WWII but as of today 64 years later we still have troops throughtout Europe and it will be many years before we can or ever be able to pull all troops out of Iraq.

We should be very careful about withdrawing our troops precipatously, just to maintain a campaign promise. It’s not about Obama and his popularity, it’s about national security for Iraq and our country’s reputation over the world. Let’s not throw away years of toil, blood, sweat and tears gaining victory for the Iraqi people for more popularity for our current president!

I told my wife back in 2003 before the invasion of Iraq, that Bush was going to get the U.S. into a war we did not need to get into. We needed to go after Bin Laden period. So, here we are, 6 years later, more than 4200 American lives lost, and nearly 1 trillion dollars spent, thank you Mr Bush.

I for one am glad that we finally have a strategy for withdrawing our troops that is lead by the ground commanders sugestions.
A lot of people are praising the surge for us being able to even think of a draw down. Unfortunatly if the ground commanders had been listened to in the begining, when they were begging for more and more troops we most likely would have been out by now. The surge helped. Of course it did. However if we had done it sooner, well we wouldnt have spent so much, lost so many troops, nor caused so many casualties.
I am glad we are finally withdrawing.
Posted by: Gwynvyd | February 27, 2009, 6:53 pm 6:53 pm
I think the President’s plans are right on, he is not doing an immediate withdrawl, it is well thought out and it is time. The invasion was not a mission of occupation and the last Bush reason for invading was to get rid of Saddam H., that was accomplished and the country is mending. We unfortunately will have a continued limited presence under the Pottery Barn theory. The mission is accomplished and the soldiers that served finished the mission put before them, its time to bring them home. Also, we cannot sustain the number of troops in Iraq, there has been too many tours for too many of our soldiers, they deserve a rest now.

I have mixed feelings about President Obama’s policy in Irag and Afghanistan. I favor pulling out troops from Iraq, but I’m afraid that our men and women will be redeployed to Afghanistan and a war without end will continue, just like Vietnam. I would like to hear from our President just what is our plan for Afghanistan. What do we hope to accomplish there? Can anything be accomplished there? Whatever, we do, is it too little, too late. If we ever had an opportunity, I believe we missed it a long time ago.

I am in agreement with the presidents plan to withdraw the u.s. troops from Iraq, but I wonder, as I have for sometime, why this administration is not making use, not even mention, of the United Nations. It would be, as it has been in the past, a great tool, as its name suggest, to bring these peace keeking forces its natural arena and therefore take some of responsibity from the U.S.A. during the withdrawl.

I think it is great that President Obama is working on getting the troops home. I am unconcerned about him needing to extend his timetable by 3 months. It shows that the President was able to receive all of the intelligence from his military personnel to make a strategic and safe withdrawal.
If he had stuck to his original idea WITHOUT checking in with the military personnel, then he would have been seen as rushing to the decision and not taking into account all of the many intricate details of the withdrawal. Our troops should have never been there in the first place. I thank our President for listening to the voice of the country-Bring our sons, daughters, mothers, and fathers home, as quickly and as safely as possible.
Posted by: Val | February 27, 2009, 6:54 pm 6:54 pm
while telling the world we are bringing our troops home in August 2010, President Obama did two things: 1. he made a politcal move, making the American public breathe a sigh of relief that their loved ones will be home soon-a warm and fuzzy comment that can help him get re-elected in 4 years. and 2. he told our enemies when we are leaving. so now our enemies can know when they are able to fully carry out their plans, we have given the American people a timetable for the sons and daughters will come home. and gave our enemies timetable to take over. smart move.
I agree-we need to get our troops out, but never ever tell your enemies your plan!

The Presidents decision is a good one, but we must consider as the military role ends, we should continue to strengthen U.S. relations with Iraq with public diplomacy. If we don’t, all the efforts to stablize the nation will be wasted.

Its good news for the terrorists, insurgents and the other threats in the region. Former President Bush’s surge in troop levels played a direct role in President Obama’s ability to actually move forward with the withdrawls. The region will still be unstable even with the proposed troop levels during and immediately after the December elections in the country. The Middle East and America will never be 100% safe until terrorists have hunted down and killed.

The records show that Iraq was not a danger to the US,no WMDs. All that effort – money and American blood should have gone into Afghanistan which is still a real threat. Let the Iraqis take care of their own destiny now.

I can not believe that ABC News allows their reporters to omit “President” when referring to our President. One reporter in the news piece refers to him as “Mr. Obama” and another refers to him as “Barack Obama”. I am 52 years old and this is the first President that is not consistantly addressed in the formal title of “President”. What is that about? I think it is as disrepectful as the military not saluting in the presence of former President Clinton. Your editors need to be more aware of this “slight” by your reporters. I consider it offense.

I believe the president is right on the right path. What we initially set out to do, we did. Now is time to collect our assets, and bring them home so we can take care of our own problems. There is no way that we, as a nation, can take care of other nations problems if our own house is in dire need of repair. This war has become an unsustainable affair; not only economically but emotianally as well.

I think it is awesome that he will be pulling the troops out in iraq. But you knoe bush said the same thing. President obama will stick to his work because he is an amazing person. The war was all about going to afganastan and well we went after saddam. Two previous president’s had saddam and didn’t take him, so what does that tell you. This country has been fighting since the bible and they will keep fighting so just let them fight and we mind our own busisness. We moved over 500,000 troops to that area in 1990 in a few months, with what now would be considered old technology. We could get 140,000 out in three months, and all the equipment if we wanted to. If they claim otherwise, then they need to get some old fart veterans from the Gulf War era Air Force and Navy to show them how. I’d be glad to help them.

i am glad to see this happening -but president obama should take no credit for what was arranged for him by the troops under the previous administration—if the surge had not been so successful -he would not able to do this-thank God we have a military that was and is so dedicated to the mission-in spite of the morale breaking politicking of many of our leaders -as the father of a serving Marine i am very proud of the example he and his fellow troops have set

I think it’s great for the U.S. to pull out our military troops, although I don’t like the fact that were still sending more troops over there. I don’t agree that our focus should shift to Afghanistan either. Yes, I know these people are terrorists, and something should be done, but we certainly have no plan of action for the issues that are arising. The government is wasting time, and money, they have no clue what to do either. Of course, the government is holding all information and chooses not to be honest with the American people, so once again the American people are being lied to.

the pure loss of life in these conflicts is astounding. as has been mentioned above Iraq has a budget surplus!

3) What will arise from the power vacuum you leave?

John Williamson—it’s been long enough. most of us don’t know if we’ll have a job to give up to returning. i find leaving american soldiers in wars just so americans can stay employed morally reprehensible. the troops need to come home and we all will have to deal with unemployment as a nation.

LBC—i understand your thinking, but these questions are not new. these were Viet Nam issues. it’s unfortunate we started a war we can’t finish. it’s regrettable that there may be a power vacuum. but where do we stop. will we ever get out of these unstable nations if those are the grounds. we should still be in Viet Nam.
it’s not about winning and responsibility. it’s time to get serious and prioritize all the issues facing this nations.
or we can do the WWII route and all get war industry jobs to send young men to die and leave them with nothing to come back to.

Excellent! From the beginning it smelled too much like my war – Vietnam. Now how about closing some of the 700 + overseas bases that the pentagon claims we need for defense. DOD budget is more than the rest of the worlds military budgets put together. We want to pay for getting this country back on it’s feet, then let us get realistic about what we really need for defense and remember President Eisenhowers farewell speach to America – he warned us about the costs of the military-industrial complex. Folks, we should have heeded his warning!!

Does anyone really believe that all the troops are coming home? Maybe we should ask the troops in Korea. We will still be there 15 years from now (and we will still be there until we are energy independant). And for those of you that think Bush was the big problem, consider this: would he have done anything without the leverage and consent from those 435 geniuses we sent to Congress? My opinion, there isn’t a problem we couldn’t have solved years ago if congress would do their job – fact is if BHO wants to do something meaningful he needs to initiate CHANGE which will lead to our Congressional people thinking of us citizens when they awake vs thinking about special interest organizations they need to get re-election dollars.

I think we could do nothing better then pulling out of Iraq. With the economy the way it is, we need to bring all of our Military home. Protect our borders and our citizens. Let unmanned drones do the work of locating and eliminating enemies of the USA.
I am a very non-violent citizens but, we need to protect our people and our interests. Interest do not include OIL but, the people and the continent of America.
Let America be free, free of being the policeman of the World. The citizens of the world need to be concerned with nuclear weapons but, as it appears they want America to be the only ones to fight the fight.
Bring our military home and secure our borders. Stop the weapons when they get to our borders, do not let them in. If the whole military machine is at home we can concentrate on protecting America, instead of policing the planet.

President Obama is following through on his promises.
All throughout the campaign season, Obama stated two things clearly and consistently:
1. That he would bring “combat” troops home in 16 months.
2. That he would leave a “residual” force behind to accomplish the things he outlined in today’s speech.
Anybody who tries to claim that he promised to bring “ALL troops” home in 16 months is lying.
Typical revisionist history from people who choose not to listen.
I listened to almost everyone of his stump speeches, and the residual force component was in almost every one.
For those of you saying “yeah, this would have happened anyway”… are you KIDDING?
McCain and Bush both wanted a longer war, with a greater presence in Iraq long-term. In fact, if it wasn’t for Obama during the campaign, Bush would have been able to apply more pressure on Maliki to have the SOFA come later than 2011.

BTW – Obama didn’t “take any credit” in today’s speech. And he also didn’t say that the war was justified.
He thanked the troops for THEIR service and recognzed that THEY accomplisghed the tasks set out for them.
In the PBS interview, he clearly states that “the war was still a mistake” and that the “civilian leadership failed strategically”.

The President is nicer than I would be. I would begin to dismantle every building, pack every vehicle, weapon, etc. and ship it back to the U.S. Don’t leave a bolt! And now!! Maybe even charge Bush and Cheney with a criminal act in federal court. This isn’t realistic, but it is how I feel!

On one hand, I’m extremely pleased that my husband and all his comrades will be home soon. But I’m just as uneasy that it will be no time soon before they are in Afghanistan or quite possibly North Korea… Kudos to our president, though, and shame on you haters!

About time. I supported Pres. Bush when he sent our troops in to kick the crap out of Saddam, restore order then get out. But after our troops kicked the crap out of Saddam, he didn’t bring the troops home, he let 4200+ troops die for people who don’t want our type of freedom and he spent a TRILLION dollars while doing that and trying to rebuild Iraq, knowing that when the troops came home the country would revert to what it was before 2003, a bunch of religions !!! that think they all have the correct answers on how the country should be run and they are willing to fight, die and kill anyone who tries to show them a differnt way. Hopefully we won’t spend another trillion sometime after 2011 when our new President or another President in the future again thinks America has to save the world. Why do we have to save the world???

I think the war shouldn’t have happened in the first place. If some people want to do something bad enough theres no way to stop them(except by peace). Wars are total nonsense. We would be in a much better situation if we didn’t have wars. I think we should colaborate with other countries not destroy them. I think the number of troops on duty should be 0. Why can’t Obama make his plans more free about the Iraq war? Because he thinks he will loose support from many Americans. I am not afraid to stand up for what’s right, even if I’m the only one, why can’t he?

Without all the detailed information from the military etc. that I don’t feel gets out to the general public I can not say. I have faith in the president. I would like to see our troups come home, they have served with great honor to our country. I realize national security is a concern, and it is a good thing I did not have the power to make the decisions, I would have pulled troups out long ago, and used major bombs to take out the situation long ago. Not sure if many more lives would have been lost. Glad that I don’t have the responsibily for such hard decisions.

They should not have been there to start with. Irag had nothing to do with 9-11. Bush and Cheney need to be tried for the deaths of over 4,000 of our young soldiers, needlessly. They are both war criminals, and need to answer for the needless deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent people.

It’s a very biased segment about Obama pulling troops from Iraq. First off, it’s nothing new it was part of Bush’s policy and agreed upon by both governments. Obama is actually just going along and collecting the credit.

This is just politics as usual. Obama is just moving troops from Iraq and building up in Afghanistan. So he is just moving from one war to another. Our troops are still in a very dangerous part of the world where they do not belong. We need to just pull all of them out of the middle east and let the people there kill themselves. We will never win there.

Finally, a President who actually knows what to do, when to do it, how to do it…and actually does it! I am confident that President Obama will get us out of Iraq safely and effectively, as well as fix our economy, environment, education, and America in general. Though it will take time, there is no other person–man or woman–who would be able to take on this task of rebuilding America at this critical time, than Barack Obama.

As a retired vet, I believe President Obama’s decision and timetable for extricating us from this mess are better thought out than President Bush’s decision to invade Iraq in the first place. At least it is based on unmanipulated intelligence and some candor from the JCS. Unfortunately, President Obama plans to continue to squander our precious resources on a war in Afghanistan that cannot be won. If the Soviets, who wage war properly, like William T. Sherman, couldn’t win in over a decade, employing the proper tactics and three-times the US/NATO troop levels, why do we think we can? Centuries of history reveal Afghanistan cannot be governed by anything remotely close to a western-style centralized government, and is nothing but a death-trap for those foolish enough to attempt to occupy the territory. We are seen as occupiers by the inhabitants of Afghanistan. We need to get out of Afghanistan too, and get back to ruthlessly prosecuting the war on terror and our avowed enemy, Osama bin Laden.
If you were to poll the world’s population to determine who the most popular person on the planet is, you would find it is Osama bin Laden. To most of the world’s 1.3 billion Muslims he is a righteous hero operating under a mandate from God. Unless we change our behavior in countries with a majority-Muslim population, bin Laden or his followers are going to execute the fatwa authorizing the use of a WMD to kill up to 10M Americans. We haven’t won a war since 1945, and this is not one we can afford to lose. President Obama needs to get us out of Iraq and Afghanistan, implement a fair and respectful foreign policy in SWA, and get his eye back on the war against radical Islamic jihadists.

The President states he doesn’t like war. But, after the pull-out in Iraq, he is leaving 50,000 troops in country. That is a number equal to two reinforced infantry divisions. Then he is going to send over 17,000 more American troops including Iraq veterans and fresh American military to Afgan. That means more casualities and taxes to pay for the prolonged war in Afgan. I still have not heard why my must get out of Iraq and stay in Afgan. Shouldn’t all military forces pull out of both countries?

Now that he has announced the withdrawal date maybe he should change the uniform style from camouflage to bull’s eyes. I think it is foolish to take the troops out this early. Although I do agree that since this is a war that has already started; we need it to stop sometime. There are honorable troops who want to fight for this country; yet if we take them out too soon, as President Obama wants, we will have no one over there to protect our country from the threats we get. This is dangerous. Obama is walking on egg shells

It took three weeks to invade Iraq. It’s ludicrous to claim it will take 16 months to leave (partially at that). In case Obama hasn’t checked with his General Accounting Office lately, our nation is BROKE. There is no more money to police, train, cajole, shoot or blow up any more Iraqis or any other citizens of foreign lands. We are spending over one trillion a year to support an empire that would have made Rome blush. End the insanity. Leave now. Recall all overseas troops, period.

At last reality is in force!
President Obama has finally stated what the American public has wanted for a long, long time. Leave Iraq.
However, the end result of having all troops leave by the end of 2001 is not what should be done. We need to intensify our orderly withdrawal and have all troops out of Iraq by the end of August 2010. We need an intial large draw down and a rapid phased withdrawal of personnel and equipment by the August 2010 date.
We need to have the money saved from our needless activity in Iraq to offset the current needs of our domestic policy.
More importantly, we will stop loosing our treasure of human lives and hand over the country of Iraq back to the Iraqis and let them handle their economy and be self sufficient.

I think it is a good time frame for withdrawal as it gives the Iraq goverment sufficient time to set up thier strategy for governing. I also think the Democrats that are commenting “it is not within the 16 months he (President Obama) promised” should think a bit more about compromise.

Mr. President, why did you listen to the commanders on the ground? A few years ago, the commanders told Bush that we should withdraw from Iraq because we were in the middle of a civil war and we had no business being there. Bush replaced those commanders with “yes” men that agreed with Bush every time. I say that when we are finally gone from there, age old religious hatreds will boil up into a civil war. The strongest will take over.

Obama can’t bring our soldiers home soon enough. We need these soldiers back in our country to fill in the gap in the cities that are laying off Police. Every soldier we bring home would then be buying American products & paying taxes in THIS country. We need them here, home, where they belong!! It’s taken WAY too long for Iraq to “Grow-up” & take ownership of their own country. While we’re on the subject, Iraq should, in good-faith, pay the U.S. Gov’t some of that oil money they have in reserves. We need it! And we need our men & women here, helping OUR country.

What troubles me so far is that Iraqi troups have had as much as four years of training by US forces, which is overkill considering that US draftees in WWII were trained for a fraction of that time before being sent into battle. I believe that Iraq will assume responsibility more swiftly with Obama’s deadlines provided they are strictly enforced.

I’m currently serving in the United States Army. So, this action applies to me, unlike 99% of the other posters. I for one, wish the politicians would just let us do our job. We can do the job, and we will, if we just them off our backs, let us stay there and maintain the government we’re helping establish. As of right now, 4253 servicemen and women have died in this conflict, and if we just pull out and abandon the mission, each and every one of them died for nothing. May not mean anything to the civilians, those with or without family in the military, but the difference between us and them, is we’re the ones doing the work. Let us worry about ourselves, we just ask for your support, not your decisions for us.

After having been kidnapped, beaten, tortured and raped and held hostage for 11 horrifying days in Moscow in early 1992 by Chechen rebels with a link to early Al qeada operatives, I am very much in favor of the US Military shifting their forces from Iraq into Afganistan once the Iraqi people and government has been completely stabilized.
Yes, it will happen.
After reseaching for my book “Eleven Days of Hell” and my current knowledge of the dangers of the Taliban and Al qeada, the USA Military forces definitely need to protect and defend their citizens.
It is imperative that President Obama lead the way – as he was elected to do.He is your Commander in Chief – let him do his job!

As an American, I am happy to put an end to our occupation in Iraq, however, my concern is announcing the timeline for the withdrawl, could set up our remaining troops for trouble if the enemies focus on attacking again. Also, my concern is that pulling out too soon may cause a backslide to the instability to that country, again, and I don’t want to think that the lives lost already were in vain for the “cause” THAT would be the biggest tragedy by far.

Obama is pulling troops out of Iraq.
I believe Obama is not telling the rest of the story.
The war is just being transferred to Afghanistan. So we shouldn’t get too excited.
So, what did we learn about Afghanistan?
Think back to when the Russians were there. We backed Afghanistans against the big bad Russians. Russia went broke over this war. What makes the USA different? We just don’t have that kind of money anymore. Or will Obama just print or borrow MORE money?
I think I see the enemy. It is us.
Wake up. You don’t think America could be brought to its knees by economic problems?
Americans are on their knees now. The next step will be faced down to the ground.

Obama’s plan for Iraq, what about America or my state, California, now on the brink of collaspe. What about the land of the free. Here is the problem, Mr. Obama doesn’t have a plan for America. He says, here, throw some taxpayer’s money into that policy or this fund, perhaps that will work, as the country slides further down the economic scale to financial oblivion. I listen every day to the news here in San Diego, how thousands of illegal aliens cross over our California border to invade our land, and nobody has the political will to stop the flood of criminals coming into out country. That’s right, I said criminals, not Sacramento, not Washington not Homeland Security. They are all out of touch with the problems we face. Welcome to the new world order, of no order whatsoever…Even the new Attorney General says we are a nation of cowards, instead of the Home of the Brave. What kind of message is that to give to the people, he should be fired! We have a government of Benedict Arnold’s, one and all… Now comes my voice, “I Want My Country Back.” George E. Buttner

I am thankful that Pres. Bush was so successful in moving the war forward through the surge. This has made it possible for Pres. Obama to make these announcements. It’s really a continuation of the Bush policy. I’m not sure why the media isn’t reporting it that way. That’s why John McCain is supporting the time table. Thank you Pres. Obama for being willing to see the need for a slower withdrawal than what you campaigned on. Thank you also to Pres. Bush for your leadership.

As it appears now, we will be leaving Iraq under terrible and shameful circumstances.
The supply of electricity is limited at best, on and off. Water is in short supply if available at all and that which is available is putrefied. We bombed the sewage treatment plants prior
to our invasion and sewers are not available.
The largest problem by far is the humanitarian situation. Perhaps 25,000
orphans on the streets begging for an existence to live till the next day, thousands of homeless families also on the streets, children being kidnapped and sold for a profit and potential body parts to sell on the black market.
We have caused almost all this mess, physical and human damage. We therefore have a responsibility to repair it. That
reconstruction was promised, where is it?

I am very glad that we will be bringing our combat troops home in August 2010.
My concern here is the training troops that will still be in Iraq and their safety, and secondly just as important, we need to ensure that the returning troops that will be leaving military service upon their return have a proper home, food and jobs. Not allowed to be put out on the streets to live, like so many of our Veterans are today.

Both wars are more complicated than the average American can comprehend. So many promises have been made on several levels to local shieks, tribes, provinces and governments. We can not just leave abrubplty without honoring our promises or words. A “individuals word” is carried heavily in the Middle East and Southwest Asia. We don’t know what promises many Commanders and Generals have made. But to a more important point are either of these government’s militaries and police forces self sufficient? There are still a lot of questions to be answered and measures to take into account before we carefully withdraw from both countries. We don’t want to leave them worse than when we started. There are also a lot logisitcal considerations that need to be taken into account. It takes a lot of money, equipment, and resources to move that many Soldiers out…it is all about planning and strategy people.
