Former First Lady Barbara Bush underwent heart surgery today at The Methodist Hospital in Houston, with husband former President George H. W. Bush at her side. Mrs. Bush’s spokesman Jim McGrath said that the surgery was a precautionary step taken after doctors discovered hardening in one part of her aorta last week. Mrs. Bush was also experiencing increasing trouble with shortness of breath. "The surgery went extremely well and we were able to successfully replace her aortic valve,"Dr. Gerald Lawie, heart surgeon at the Methodist DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center said in a statement. "I expect her to recover fully and soon resume her normal activities." In a statement, the former President said "I am very impressed with and grateful to the wonderful team of doctors and nurses at Methodist Hospital who have helped Barbara. We have every confidence she is in the best hands."
