Brockton: St. Patrick’s Day Exhaustion Lingers

ABC News’ Erin Keohane reports from Brockton: Something’s in the Brockton air today; whether it was the unseasonably high temperature or the post St. Patrick’s Day exhaustion.  This year, Brockton’s St. Patrick’s Day celebrations were hit hard by the recession.  While bagpipes sounded and corn beef was served, the annual Honor Guard St. Patrick’s Day luncheon sold 65 fewer tickets this year. The city is facing severe budget cuts, but the town was able to come together to celebrate the rich Irish history that remains. Officers were focused on the holiday — not looming job cuts. At the Irish flag raising ceremony, Mayor Harrington spoke of the resiliency of Irish community and their ability to overcome the challenging economic times since the early 1900s. It’s that fighting spirit that’s needed in Brockton now more than ever.  Officials are searching for ways to bring a sense of pride back to the town. With many industrial buildings vacant downtown, the city is embarking on a revitalization project — hoping that new construction will be a breath of fresh air.

Personnel Names and Compensation should remain Confidential and NOT release to the Federal/State governments including NY’s AG Cuomo.
Companies who release this information, which is against the Constitution, will loose their superior employees. This will result in the demise of some very good companies because of a lack of quality personnel.

I am no fan of AIG, they have lost a bit of my money, however as a historian the actions of Franks and other members of Congress are beginning to remind my of the 1950s Red Scare and McCarthyism. I am not sure that Congress can pass a law focused on a few people without violating the equal justice before the law clause. This Congress is pushing anger to cover their own complicity in the economic downturn. The downturn could not have taken place without the removal of all the post Great Depression regulations that would have pevented this type of bubble. I do not understand how a news organization can stand by and let Congress force people to name names as McCarthy and before him HUAC did. Back then a few courageous news people stood up to people like McCarthy, but I am not sure that moral courage is a part of new reporting today. This should be called Frankism. When is ABC and the other news organizations going to begin doing their jobs rather than follow the popular crowd. You folks did not take Bush to task over the War in Iraq until it was too late and you are doing the same thing here. When will we see some backbone from ABC?

AIG names should not be released to anyone! That includes congress, the president, any attorneys and attorney generals.
Instead the names of all the congress persons who did not read the bill before they voted on it should be released to the american people because it was their blunder that created this problem to become a problem and that includes all of the president’s people that advised him to sign the bill without reading it. The American people pay these people very well to do their jobs and they haven’t been doing them! I would like to see a list of who actually read the bill before signing it becuase the list would probably be very short. The news media still hasn’t gotten it right!

Names should NOT be released to the public. This is a huge political problem and these employees should not suffer. The fact that the Congress can put in a tax to take the bonus back should be very scary to the people of the US. What keeps them from doing it to those of us who are working hard to earn our promised bonuses. “Today companies that got bail out money, tomorrow all profitable companies that make more than $250,000?” Have we already gone to a dictatorship???
