Brockton’s Pride Tested
ABC News’ Erin Keohane reports:
Over the past week, Brockton’s pride has been tested; graduated, un-hired Police cadets were forced to turn in their badges and guns and Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, came to Brockton High School to announce Stimulus Special Education funding.
Even though the Cadet’s do not have jobs in the Brockton Police Department they are hopeful and proud to have graduation as a Brockton Cadet. However, with more police layoffs coming next week, jobs in the Brockton police department might be years away.
For Principal Sue Szachowicz, the Governor’s visit was the chance to highlight the schools academic achievements and show-off the renowned Band and Choir. For Mayor Harrington the Governor’s visit was an opportunity to flaunt, what resident call the "bright spot" of the city — the High School — despite the fact that the Governor cut $2 Million already promised and budgeted to the City.
The real test for Brockton comes on April 1st — the day the Mayor will announce layoffs. Residents in the City of Champions are remaining hopeful that the cuts won’t be too severe.
