Closing Arguments: U.S. Heading in Right Direction?
In early October, a record low 8 percent of Americans said they believed the country was heading in the right direction. By January — just before the Obama inauguration — that number was up to 19 percent. It has now climbed to 42 percent, according to an ABC News/Washington Post poll released at midnight tonight — some 70 days into the Obama administration. So what do you think? Is America heading in the right direction? Or are we still off-track? Tell us what you think. And follow "Nightline" anytime on Twitter: http://twitter.com/Nightline

I don’t know where these polls are taken. I can’t even find a place on this site to vote. When I talk among friends, the consensus is that the govt meddling in the markets cannot be a good thing. I recall labeling friends 20 years ago when they suggested that the government is pushing a socialist agenda. You don’t have to guess anymore, they just admit it. I can’t understand who’s constituion Obama swore on, because he’s acting like he’s never see the USA’s.

O.K. Wingnuts, try to negatively spin this number. No thanks to you, most Americans think things are getting better.

The last people to have a legitimate Poll plastered all over ABC News is the Washington Post. The funny thing about polls is that I’ve NEVER met anyone who has ever been polled. Have them call me and 99.9% of the people I know and the results to that poll would be drastically different.

I don’t think our country is headed in the right direction. For the first time since the cold war I truly fear for my country. 9/11 was a surprise so there was no time to dread it. The cold war and the way our country is headed is something to worry about.

No-we are getting worse off by the day. The President firing a CEO of a corporation? A 3 trillion dollar debt-and growing? I fear we are on a slippery slope. We are rapidly heading into socialism-and history has shown that desperate economic times can lead democracies toward totalitarian government where money and power replace
democratic princiiple. I fear we are not grwoing the economy-but more government morass.

I can not believe that this country really wants to go down the path to Socialism, that absolutely is where this administration and this congress is taking us.

Yes, heading there as long the focus is on improvement by making companies accountable. For far too long, the large industries rely on bailouts without taking the responsibility because of the effect it will have on the ecomony. So be it, let them fail, another smarter and better equipped one will take its place. It may be hard going, and those affected are certainly not alone and I feel for them. But the evolution of business cannot be twarted by bailouts, only delayed. Get on board, or fall by the wayside! It’s about time we had a president with the balls to do what needs to be done and say what needs to be said!!!

No, this country is not headed in the right direction–Government takeover of the car industry is not right-there should not have been bailouts and there should not be anymore unconstitutional bailouts!

I do not think the US is heading in the right direction. All this spending is going to hurt Americans for years to come. And quite frankly if the Dems in congress would have listened to both Bush and McCain over the years and set regulations on Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac then would would not be in the situation we are in today. Like Obama or not, fact is he is nothing more than a great speaker and I fell for it when Clinton ran so I knew better this election. In fact Obama is #2 for money making with Fannie Mae and I’m not thrilled about that. Lies and deceit. Go ahead media and keep building him up bigger than he is. You all virtually got him elected, hope you are happy with his “so called change”. I’ve only seen things getting worse, so no immediate help for me or anyone I know. In fact, my husband has just recently joined me in the unemployment line. Very nice, certainly not change I can believe in……………….

Absolutely not! We are heading quickly into Socialism. Our children and grandchildren will be impoverished with all the taxation and debt being placed upon us by this administration. We will all be enslaved to the government when they take our current freedoms away with new rules and regulations. Our government must get back to following the Constitution. The people had better wake up and protest this government takeover or it will be too late to save our beloved U.S.A.

The Coming Mark
Although the times may be bleak, it will be worse that final week,
The final week of man’s history, as men presently know and see,
A final corridor of present time, of seven years by God’s design,
That time known as the Tribulation, a time ahead for every nation.
When future things get truly dark, every man shall receive a mark,
A physical mark upon the hand, of every person from every land,
If not on the hand, than instead, the mark will be on the forehead,
That mark issued by Antichrist, who then controls your entire life.
It will be the sign of allegiance to, the Antichrist and all he will do,
That mark is needed to survive, and is mandatory to remain alive,
Required for all, to buy or sell, during a time that’ll seem like Hell,
If that mark, you do not accept, it will be for you, a certain death.
With The Church raptured and gone, Satan’s plan will continue on,
A day’s wages for a loaf of bread, filling men with fear and dread,
With the economy beyond repair, all men’s hearts fill with despair,
As he institutes his own authority, denouncing the God of Eternity.
All of this calls for God’s wisdom, to be aware of Perdition’s Son,
As dark shadows we begin to see, throughout our world politically,
Leading all to a Great Tribulation, foretold in our Lord’s Revelation,
Where God will destroy the enemy, and condemn all evil in eternity.
For believers it shall usher in, Jesus Christ’s reign for a millennium,
With those saved out of tribulation, by God’s Grace and Salvation,
For the mark, they will not receive, instead in God they will believe,
As others sealed by Jesus Christ, to enter together into eternal life.

The direction that we are headed on is history repeating itself. Isn’t this the same mistake that European countries made in the 1930′s and 1940′s. The United States seems to be in the fast track to a socialist government. Since when does our government have the right to tell American companies how to conduct their business and who should be in charge? Isn’t this what “Big Brother” is about?
Posted by: M | March 31, 2009, 12:31 am 12:31 am
First step in the right direction was kicking out the incompetent infantile Republican Party.
Now they all come to ABC blogs to whine like crybabies about how scared they are of big boogieman Obama.
Posted by: R Mutt | March 31, 2009, 12:31 am 12:31 am
Yes! The people who think it is getting worse should have been SCREAMING when we were headed to the place we find ourselves today. I think drastic measures by the government is the only way to get the attention of the business and bank CEO’s and any other entities with the power to affect the economy to wake the hell up and do a better job.
Posted by: Mick P | March 31, 2009, 12:32 am 12:32 am
The country is headed, at high speed, thanks to liberals who want everyone to depend on the government for everything. We have done what the founding fathers worried most about, and that is changing back to the same government they had came from. History will repeat itself because we are too stupid to continue learning. How smart is it to go in circles when you continue to say that you want to drive to another state other than the one you are in. In 1776 the country started down a straight path, but one president started the circle in the 1930′s and it has taken many years to get back to the start of this country. Guess what? we made it. I have never in my life seen more stupid people holding governmental positions. I have only 2 years of college and I could run rings around those idiots.

Come to my state of Michigan and take a poll, I know you will find a different number. Or are you only going to african/american neighborhoods? Cause that could very well make a difference in the totals.

We are headed in the wrong direction. When a President can fire the CEO of a private company, we should be alarmed. Obama is going to finish what Ben Laden couldn’t: desroy the US economy
Posted by: marilynswa | March 31, 2009, 12:43 am 12:43 am
No, the country is not headed in the right direction. To begin with the public has apparently lost sight of the fact that the economy was not in bad shape until Peloci “The Mad Hatter” and her left-wing crew took over Congress over two years ago. Then came the most crooked election we have ever had in the history of this nation. Over sixteen lawsuits have been filed requesting/demanding to see Obama’s vaulted birth certificate and college records, none have been addressed. The usual denial is that the person filing, quote, doesn’t have standing. Well, my relatives fought for this country in the Revolutionary War and many others, I think any natural born citizen of our country HAS STANDING to see if our constitution has been upheld. I for now do not have a President and until I see more proof than a certificate of live birth that will remain so. Doesn’t anyone else think it strange when his white grandmother, the woman who actually raised him, was on her deathbed only he went to see her. In any normal family the entire family would have gone, but of course you wouldn’t want any witness to the disposal of damning paperwork, now would you? I am very disappointed that not one mention of these lawsuits has made it’s way onto any newscast or in fact Nightline. I want the truth, it just might save this country, our basic freedoms and American dream from Obama’s socialist agenda. Wake up America, there is no free lunch!
Obama is merely a gifted speaker who as we all know doesn’t write these speaches, merely is delivering the message and agenda of George Soros who has one goal and that is to destroy America. Look at the lofty promises, now look at the outright lies!

Wonder how many people were polled to get that percentage?
When government quits bailing out the rich fat cats and starts concentrating on Main Street, then we will be going in the right direction.
Right now I do not believe any polls, they are taken with only a small percentage of people… like maybe 1,000 or less and are not accurate.
The bubble has not completely burst yet, and slowly we are seeing all the corruption and seediness of this country come to a head.
So ABC you can poll all you want… but if you want the real percentage of people who believe the lies of the government…
Take a nice stroll off of Main Street and come to my neighborhood…. then you will get the real answers.

No things are not getting better. How can it with the government giving away money it doesn’t have? (And with no accountability.) The President “firing” the head of a company is just plain wrong, even if they needed the axe. Our freedoms are going out the window, many under the guise of peace and safety. Wake up, America!

Do you see them going after AIG for big bonuses or Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac for fraud. Nope, of course not because the majority of congress has their investments in AIG. Wake up and smell the coffee. You are a fool if you believe that the dems are not responsible for this mess because of deregulations set by none other than Bill Clinton. I hope you lose your job as me and my husband have (automotive field), and see how you like the change we can believe in. Nothing but a bunch of words. Grow up and do some research online. I suggest going right to congress’s site to see all the times Bush and McCain tried to get regulations set and warned of a major housing crisis without it. Then when it happened, like they predicted, the ripple effect takes place in that the mortgage companies lose. LOL, they get “no questions asked” money for stupid loans they gave out and had complete control of. Nice job there! This country is doomed if we keep on this same pace. Obama will not get re-elected, in fact I’d like to impeach his butt now if I could.

Yes, because we have a leader who is in charge, competent, a thinker, a visionary of brilliant intelligence, a concilator…Obama is taking every effort to correct 8 years of a total lack of leadership and unfettered greed run amok…Obama is a change agent and we should be thankful that he has agreed to take on this awesome problem (economy and otherwise) and endeavor to solve it so that we may move beyond it.

Recently we hear about individuals overspending their credit cards and getting in deep financial trouble. That is exactly what Obama is doing to our country. John Stossel had it right on 20/20 a while back when he was throwing out money and telling everyone to come and get some. Then he was shouting at the White House asking Obama how he was going to pay for all of this. Stop the kool-aide and wake up. The only way he is going to pay for this is tax the **** out of us. So far he has been 100% in doing what he said he wouldn’t do and not doing what he said he would. He is a showman and just told you what you wanted to hear to get elected. Some people never wake up!!!

I don’t know if we are headed in the right direction or not, but I know that my voice is being heard in Washington. Ever since I started voting, as I left the polling place, I would wonder if I was wasting my time. Does anyone pay any attention to what the voters want? This year I didn’t feel that way. For the first time I felt like someone was interested in what I had to say, and really cared about ordinary people. I feel like President Obama does care, he’s lived the life of an ordinary person, so he understands our lives in a way that no Kennedy or Bush ever could.
Posted by: Macaw608 | March 31, 2009, 12:56 am 12:56 am
He’s not lived his life as a normal person. He’s paid his way up. Normal people don’t have that kind of money. But then again, normal people don’t have the kind of friends that he has. A bunch of crooks, thieves and hoodlums that could pass along dirty money. No thank you, I’d rather move up in the world the legal, honest way.

You know they say if you don’t like America to leave, well this country is still the best on earth but Obama is making it just like the rest of the world as fast as he can and pretty soon it will not matter where you live because our great country will be just like all the rest of the socialist countries of the world.

Is anyone at the newsroom going to look and see if the POTUS ever fired a ceo of a major corporation before? Do you want to buy a car made by the Federal government? Not me! I used to be a GM driver now I will go to Ford. Goodby Caddies hello Lincolns!

I believe our country is headed in the wrong direction. I don’t have any confidence in Obama’s so called stimulus plan or the changes he touts. Give us a tax break and we will stimulate this economy. What about letting us keep our withholding taxes for 3 months? You’ll see how 300 million Americans will get things moving. Stop the spending. No more bailouts! Enough already! I am also terrified about BO’s position on GTMO and fear for our country’s safety & security. Keep the terrorists where they are and not on the streets of our cities.
Shouldn’t the tightening of the financial belt start at the top? Obama needs to reduce the amount of traveling he is doing and cut back on his cameo appearances here and there. What is he doing to cut back on expenses? What is Pelosi and her Congress doing to cut back on their expenses? I am not hearing about any cost cutting measures from Captial Hill. The spending is all I hear about. How can we spend & borrow so much? How can we possibly reduce the deficit if we keep spending? I am not happy with the direction Obama is taking this country.

No, I believe that Obama and Congress are leading us to the greatest financial disaster this country has ever seen. They believe that Government is the answer to everything and forget how this country was founded. Obama is no better than King George and the House of Lords. They have no concept of how all this will be paid for…or they are lying to all of us and know that they will either have to raise taxes to the point that we will all be bankrupt or that the other countries of the world will no longer buy our debt…either way, we will become a second-rate country at best.

USA heading in the wrong direction, and on a collision with a Mack truck. The PIGxecutives stole the bailout cash, companies should have been allowed to fail, GM pigxecutive Wagoner resigned so he can collect $20MM undeserved retirement benefits because without bailout $$$ GM would fail and then he wouldn’t get his $20MM … get it? AIG’s pigxecutive Cussano stole $300MM and should be Bernard Maddof’s prison bitch. The UAW ruined the auto industry, and I just saw on TV the union leader stating they have already cut back enough, selfish incompetent moron obviously doesn’t understand economics, somebody please outlaw the UAW already and whoever doesn’t agree then they don’t have a j-o-b and replace them with people that WANT and NEED a j-o-b.
Even world leaders disagree of Hussein’s indiscriminate spending. WE THE PEOPLE agreed to a $700 billion bailout strategy, NOT the irresponsible staggering cash diarrhea of unprecedented proportions. I see the performance of a mediocre community organizer up to his knees in doo-doo.

Yes, I believe we are heading in the right direction; however, there is still a lot of negative economic data coming out everyday which means it will still be a while before things improve (when the first quarter 2009 GDP numbers come out next month they are probably going to be uglier than ugly).
I think the Obama administration is doing many things to help those who need it which is a good thing. These little doses of socialism like extended unemployment benefits, CORBA subsidies, mortgage loan modification programs, and middle class tax credits is a very good thing because it will help to slow down the rampant economic inequality that is so prevalent in our society.
If the disparity between rich and poor continues to grow unchecked it will have disastrous consequences. We already see the public unrest emerging in Eastern Europe because of the dire economic conditions there. The democrats realize that to have a strong America we need a strong middle class. Republicans want to obliterate the middle class and create a society were you are either very rich or very poor with no middle class at all.
So being that we have a democratic president and democratically controlled congress–yes we are headed in the right direction.
Now, if we could just get those mind-less republicans to stop wishing that Obama’s economic recovery plan will fail, we will really be headed in the right direction. I can’t understand why there are people out there who want us to go backwards.

where when do they poll I never herd of any polling people talking to me. Polls can be twisted anyway they want data shown. We the people are loosing our rights, we have been high jacked from the left, pitted against one and another, news media don’t show the news but they make the news up as they go. we are head done the wrong path. If you dont have the money don’t spend it. all the government wants is to control me and take everything back. Tell me that is not good for me so lets tax it. This Government reminds me of early Nazi party. Schools and colleges remind me of the “Nazi Youth Camps” brain wash the youth and they will fallow you.

I have never known Socialism to be the right direction. Am questioning how you got 42% in favor when a quick reading of the comments here show a vast majority do not show those numbers to be true at all. Is it the new math? Like many others who have commented, I have never been polled. Leave New York and ask some of the people of the heartland and see what kind of results you get.

You kidding me? Going in the right direction is firing ALL of our politician or hearing the politician say “we screwed up” or “we take a pay cut to share your pain.” We will be in the right direction when they know how to balance a checkbook, or learn how to add and subtract since that is all we need to balance a check book. We will head in the right direction when there is no longer life time politician. Our political structure has worked great for the past 200 plus years, but maybe now might be the time to tweak it so that the system will work for another 200 years.

NO! This country is NOT headed in the right direction. If Obama wants to be dicator of a socialist country — let him leave the USA to almost any other country — and let us get back to living according to the Constitution. ABC: just poll your own comments and you will have the real way the people of America think — more like 90+% of the people this the USA is going in the WRONG direction.

Don’t be fools people!!! If things are getting better, please show me what and where. All I see is more foreclosures, layoffs, bankruptcies, and more debt piled onto us taxpayers. The government, corporations, and media are all playing with accounting numbers to calm the people. Its a game of good news and bad news every week or so. But really, overall it will get worst before it gets better.

The ABC Nightline poll is bogus from the start. The question is so open ended that it elicits an emotional response rather than one based on facts. ABC presents no credentials to validate it as a statistically significant poll. That is, sample size, error band, confidence rating, and so on. Also, location is important as well. If ABC took the poll in NYC, I would expect the results they got. Same result in San Francisco, he home of the most hedonistic culture in America these days. If you tke your sample from Kansas, Missouri, COlorado, THE South, and so on, I’ll bet the answer will be DRASTICALLY different. If ABC were to commission a non-partisan polling company such as the Pew Research Company and let them run a statistically significant poll with built in checks and balances to validate the answers so that the trends as analyzed truly represent the sense of the country, you will get a different answer,
The Queen, Congressman Nancy Pelosi, speaks to a group of Hispanics in San Francisco and tells them that ICE, doing its job finding illegal immigrants and deporting them is “un-American” is unconscionable. The woman is daft and dangerous. SHe is unable to grasp reality.
To have Obama force the resignation of a CEO of a publicly traded company is shades of fascism. All that he had to do was say that the restructuring plan failed and that there would be no more financial assistance until they got it right. The Board of Directors would have done something after that.
Have you ever heard of “root cause analysis”? It is a technique to get to the cause of a problem so that one fixes the correct problem and not just a symptom of it. The root cause of the whole economic debacle we are in now is the Community Redevelopment Act under Carter, a social engineering project poorly executed. It was made worse under Clinton when in ’94-’95, his Administration totally eliminated underwriting standards for loaning mortgage money. Essentially, these let anyone get a mortgage to by any house, whether they could service the debt or not. This created a sure in demand with normal supply levels. Guess what – home prices soared for about a decade. Then, ARMs started adjusting, gas prices shot through the roof do to both short supplies and speculation, and foreclosures began. ONce the foreclosures began, banks became home owners, servicing their own debt, which restricted what they could loan out. The spiral tightened until the credit market collapsed in Sep 08 – wiping out retirement savings plans, college funds and rainy day savings accounts. The Bush 43 Administration saw it in 2001, but 9/11 took them away from it. They again tried to rectify the mortgage problem via legislation in 2005 and 2006, but partisan voting vetoed that plan and the stage was set for disaster. By the way, both Barney Frank and Chris Dodd kept saying the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were healthy throughout all of this. Let’s see, isn’t Dodd also getting about $160 grand in “contributions” from AIG about this time as well!?!?!
And, on top of this, David Axelrod, a seasoned Hollywood type, ran a brilliant campaign for Obama. But, it was a campaign based on Image and not Substance. Obama is a brilliant orator when he has a teleprompter, but significantly more halting in his as hoc answers when questioned by reporters and interviewers. So, the nation was fooled into voting for a person with absolutely no experience in running anything. That is like asking a first year medical student to perform open heart surgery. That outcome is a certainty – death to the patient.
I could go on with more facts for you to ponder, but you get the picture. I obviously voted for experience, and not glitz and glam.
The country is unerringly going in the wrong direction. That direction is socialism. You have already seen what a little dose of socialism into a capitalist society can do (the Community Redevelopment Act under Clinton, worsened by the Democrats in Congress, namely Frank and Dodd.) The stimulus package will create hyper inflation (ie, double digit) starting in 2010. Coupe that with igher taxes (Bush tax cut expiration) and the country goes back into recession, but much deeper. Add socialized medicine tothat dastardly mix of bad news and we just might get the Great Depression that Obama wants so that he can nationalize everything and take care of us all. Check your history books, kids. This is too close to the rise in power of Hitler, Mussolini, and Lenin.
If you really want to know what the country is thinking, Google “tea party”. Read what they are saying in ORlando Florida or in California. Google “The 9-12 Project”. You’ll find more interesting stuff to read.
No, the country is inexorably going in the wrong direction. I hope that everyone wakes up and writes your elected representative. If no substantive response, it is time to “tar and feather ‘em and ride ‘em out of town on a rail.”

America is not by any means heading in the right direction! We are TRILLIONS IN DEBT!!! The FEDERAL RESERVE must be ABOLISHED and THIS DEBT SLAVERY must be STOPPED NOW!
Wake Up AmerICANs! The CHANGE you are in for is nothing short of a PATRIOT’S NIGHTMARE. Only you can put a stop to it all by first WAKING UP and then taking ACTION and DEMANDING the RIGHT KIND of CHANGE from those now in power.
It is becoming more apparent by the day who this country is really being run by. It is a social dictatorship now, with the power behind the throne being global elitists that are hellbent on bringing this country’s economy down, so they can enslave us all with their New World Order socialist state, much in the same fashion as Europe is now with their EU. Once that is achieved the rest of the world is simply duck soup for them. Without our Constitution and REAL FREEDOM we will cease to exist at all as the GREAT NATION we once were.
It’s NOW up to Americans to decide whether or not to accept this eventual outcome as their own sad but certain fate. The time is upon us all NOW! We must DEMAND REAL CHANGE that WE CAN BELIEVE IN!

Obama has hurt the economy much more by
bashing the use of corporate jets and
having corporate meetings etc. Obama needs to cut all the hoopla and expensive dinners, unecessary trips and
bonuses at the top of leadership,
Washington. Lets downsize government and all the extravagants there.

Of course things are getting better. We have a Marxist President who will soon be joined by Pelosi and Reid in designing a car powered by wind and sun that will be free until they take over the oil companies. Paradise is almost here. Praise to Comrade Obama.

I’m not sure where the polls were conducted or how many people were polled. But America is on a downward spiral going faster every day. Since Obama took office he has single handedly sunk us into trillions of dollars worth of debt. He can’t use the old excuse that he inherited the problem because he is the problem. Not only are the tax payers faced with a lifetime of debt, but we are having to deal with a man who would be a dictator.
He sens millions to Pakistan while letting thousands of Americans go under the bus. Just because we are poor doesn’t meant that we don’t need help. If he can bail out the banks, car companies, and all sorts of other entities then why can’t he put some of that money into helping the poorest people in the U.S.??
No, we aren’t headed in the right direction, we are headed to hell in a hand basket with a man who knows nothing about world affairs or how to run a country.
God Bless America and set us free from Barak Obama!

Right direction. Greed got us where we are. Risk for immediate personal gain and no concern over long term consequences. That is the direction our society was going. That has to stop. It’s about time Obama fired the CEO since the govt gave them all that $ the govt has a controlling interest in the company. If companies want/need govt money, then play by new rules. No more $1million+ bonuses, no more golden parachutes. America has to change the way it thinks about business, risk, and profit. If all these companies fail, the economy will implode-these are systemic failures, causing even greater job losses and surely a depression. Some will have to fail, but there will be a ripple effect that many refuse to see. After Lehman Bros was allowed to fail, there was a ripple effect across the globe. Within 3 days, Iceland (yes the country) had declared bankruptcy. this is bigger than GM and AIG. This is a world problem and it is going to take efforts and money like we’ve never seen to turn it around. Tax cuts are not going to fix this one. The economy tanked with Republicans in office and they were there for a long time. But both sides are at fault. They’re all, to some degree, run by corporations and lobbyists – and we continue to allow it. Change takes everyone out of their comfort zone… we need more of that. Not all change is good, but what we were doing before was not working. The rich were getting richer and the poor poorer. that’s a path to a 3rd world country.
Start opening your mind to alternative ideas, if you’re a Fox News loyalist, change the channel and listen and vice versa. Not everything the other side says is wrong, but not everything is right either.

Ya know the investment banks were never in the banking system of FDIC and they used rules of 10 times leverage and no need to have bank reviews and they went way out on this limb and a limb broke and know someone says they are too big to fail. Now they have $20 bill of bailout and they received addl $10 bill payments from the $200 bill that AIG got – And now they dont want to sell toxic assets because they will lose money??? Who took on those incredulous risk of no doc mortgages or 105% of value mortgage? Obama people have built this system to support the bad mortgages from 5 sides and the banks wont start to sluff the toxic assets. The direction is being HINDERED by the investment banks not admitting that THEY ARE THE PROBLEM. All of Obama actions look small compared to investment banks NOT cleaning up their own MESS!!!!!!!

Despirate times require despirate measures. The President has succeeded in at least beating back the growing panic by ACTING; something the right wing seems to know nothing about.
The house of cards that was the economy kicked off my supply siders, deregulators, as well as the snakes of Wall Street has crashed to the ground. Rather than weep over the ruins, or attempt to glue it back together the President has decided to take a new course of action. This country has always prospered in the end by taking the road less traveled.

I think the government needs to help the individual working families instead of these corporations. If their books are cleared and people are still “in debt” (bad credit, indebted to companies and collection agencies) then the problem will repeat itself.
They should pardon credit if they are going to clear these corporate balance sheets and provide the working class (middle, lower-middle, and lower class) citizens with a bailout to stimulate the economy.
We are the ones who keep the economy on track, NOT the government, and NOT corporations alone. GM, Chrysler, and Ford may sell cars–but to whom? US!!! The WORKING CLASS!!!!!!!!!
WAKE UP PEOPLE; IT’S NOT ABOUT BLACK AND WHITE, OBAMA OR BUSH, (OR MCCAIN FOR THAT MATTER) BUT RATHER RIGHT AND WRONG AND PROGRESSION OR RECESSIVE ACTIONS!!!

It’s the incompetents in the government that has gotten us where we are…They need to cut their salaries 25% and then they need to get social security like the rest of us and only 2 term limits. This is bogus. Do people seriously believe this is happening in America?? And there are the smarties out there who say, oh no this isn’t socialism!! Hello!! Wake up!! A relative of mine escaped from Cuba. They KNOW what socialism or communism is!! And we are headed in that direction. There are a whole lot of stupid people out there who have no clue what is happening. Primarily the news media!! The media doesn’t care if mainline Americans are losing their jobs. just as long as they are getting their big pensions and paychecks. But wake up -you are next. When newspapers are dropping like flies, Chicago had 2 go bankrupt today. Wake up Americans, fight back. Obama is not the Messiah, and he sure doesn’t have the answer. His answer is more control, more control of the census (in the White HOuse??) with Raum at the helm. MOre control of Acorn, he loves!! More control of banks, government, etc. It just doesn’t quit. This is Chicago politics for the nation now. Lucky you!! Now the world gets to find out how Chicago does things!!

When the Republican approved the Bailout, they did not call it “socialism”. Now that the Democratic party is on top of the hill, that term and “Fascism” is spewing from all sides of their mouths. FACE IT the Republicans cannot lead. Look at the mess they’ve created for ALL of us Americans. It is my opinion, that ALL POLITICIANS should be elected to no more that 2 terms; just like our President. Each term for all of them should be 4 years, just like the President. Times and Ethics change and we must keep up. Longer periods have made their minds inpenetrable, like marble. Traditions should be cast in marble, as in Rome, and let’s get on with our futures. Let’s bring sunshine to the Capitol. Stop wasting our time. They’ve created this huge divide among us. Their leadership stinks and have not lived up to their promises as servants of our nation. Can this rightly be called “the best system in on the planet?” We only have a billion years left to preserve Humanity…after that, no more sunshine. No more stagnation, please!

Unfortunately, the country is way off track and still headed in the wrong direction, as it has been for the past 40 years. The decay and decline that started in the late 1960’s is still continuing. To turn it around and get it headed in the right direction will require action by our failed government. This action must include, but not be limited to, the following:
Getting a cap on population. Reducing population by attrition. Banning all immigration until population is well back below 200 million. Shoring up the borders to prevent any further alien invasion, which is laughably called illegal immigration. Seeking out all illegal aliens now in the country and deporting them and any offspring they bore.
Shrinking the size of government at the federal, state, and local levels. Get rid of all the dead wood in government. Retain a core staff of people who are expected to do something for their salaries. Put in place a policing process to make sure they are doing something worthwhile. Set benchmarks as to what they are expected to accomplish or otherwise forfeit their jobs to the many capable unemployed who would do a better job than them anyway.

Ya know, he is picking and choosing who he bails out. Yes, the head of the post office got a bonus. But did you not notice that Congress gets a hefty payraise? SO does Obama?? But also notice that ‘if’ this is not a man made economic crisis…..why are congressmen, the Prez and others jet setting around, oh for the purposes of being on Jay leno?? Gee, that must have cost us…what over 50K for his trip there, what about his trip to Ohio, Michigan?? Is this necessary for an economy that is supposedly tanked?? Is this necessary for our officials to be making these trips, with security, with multiple planes etc.?? Does anyone else care about this? IS it ok for the Obama’s to come home to Chicago every 6 weeks? Does this not cost the taxpayers for security in Chicago? Can Chicago stand this burden?? Or is it all about politics?? Gee, I wonder?? yes, this is socialism leading to Communism. NO he is not making things better!! No the eoomony is not getting better. NO Americans are not doing better!!! And if we are really really lucky we can depend on the government to follow nutballs like Al gore and we will really get into this crap for the environment. Heck!! Why not just ask al to give a bonus to his company in England so we can make him richer? shoot why not ask al if we can all move into his multiple houses that save so much green energy. And by the way, while he is jetsetting back and forth to England we can all enjoy the energy HE is saving!! Even the energy crisis is man made!! Wake up!!!

Wrongo!! This is not about Republicans and Democrats and facism or socialism. Socialism comes into play because we have a prez that wants this! Read what he said back in July 24, 2008 in Berlin, he wants one world government. obama is bigger than America. He wants the world, not just this country> HE is the one who brought in socialsm with his insane ideas!! He wants to rule the world, he is heading in a direction, democrats and republicans will be shocked at in the end… He is a product of hte democrat ‘baby killers’. He wants to see that the whole world kills babies!! Oh shoot!! what a guy!! He is a radical, like all his friends are!! How else do we get White HOuse people in that have dual citizenship in Iran>>>?? And by the way..does our lovely media report the amazing results to the most incredible war in history?? HEck no!! It is interesting that The London Times have called it an incomparable victory and yet here in America we are back at Vietnam days, Democrats don’t want Bush to get any credit for what they have accomplished. Thank God we can still get news in other places BESIDES from nbc, abc, cbs…Thank God there are actual news medias out there that report the REAL news and what is important!! Hey lucky us, Geithner, Obama and the G20 will give us a universal coin, a one world govt. monetary system!!! And isn’t this what it is all about anyway?? Watch!!1

If the neocon lunatics weren’t concerned about this country under Bush, they clearly are now fear mongering.
It’s clear most of the Right Wingers don’t even know what Socialism is. For them it is merely some derogatory label. More from the morally and intellectually bankrupt Right Wing. What a bunch of whining sore losers.
I suspect the Obama-haters are really going to hate life after 8 years.

The last 4 months of 2008 bailouts under Bush were bad, but Obama & Pelosi are hideous.
Europeanizing the US economy is wrong for the 21st century, with its’ added competitors in world commerce. Obama and friends are captured by economic nostalgia for the glory years of 1945-73, when there was no one to compete with. They will, therefore, be bad for the opportunities of my kids and yours.

The only thread the lefties have posted is that we don’t know what socialism is and that Origama will take care of them. Find me a socialist country that prospers. Those that can’t or won’t take care of themselves, and neighbors, need the force of govt. to take from others. This is not a Dem/Rep debate, the Repub’s didn’t help any the last 8 years. Remember a communist is just a socialist in a hurry.

I know someone will call this racist because anyone that dissents is immediately labeled. We made history with the first black president. One would think that brings a deep understanding of the freedoms earned with blood 100 years ago. So why would a bright articulate black president move away from freedom and shackle America into socialism? Heaven forbid I use the C word, but do we really believe Origama came up with this master plan by himself. Me thinkith Origama is just the water boy.

Right now we are sailing a rough sea in a moderate sailing craft rather than a power boat plowing through on a straight course. Our course at the moment is sailing forward with a tack to the port and then sailing a little bit more and taking a tack to the starboard. Unfortunately it is a slow and steady course through strong seas and high troughs, going up and plunging down only to rise again. But we have the tenacity to RISE again we just have to tighten our belts and stand up and be heard! We certainly are not headed in the wrong direction at the moment.
And surprising for those who wonder who gets polled, in the past 3 years I have been polled by Gallup and several other groups including the Rep party and the Democrats a total of 7 times which is certainly above the average – not sure how I lucked out but they were not always happy with the answers they got I am sure! Remember we must keep going forward in the face of adversity!

I believe America is not heading in the right direction as we have turned our backs on God and His ways. This is not President Obama’s fault, although he needs to get right with God also. We have been a greedy, selfish socitey too long, have been killing unborn babies and have the nerve to call it Tissue, and have gradually been turning our backs on Israel. The Bible says about I srael, I WILL BLESS THOSE WHO BLESS THEE, AND CURSE THOSE WHO CURSE THEE. People and our leaders need to repent and start looking to God like our forefathers did.

To David, First off the president didn’t fire the CEO of the GM, he resigned, get you facts straight!
Second, don’t feel bad for Mr. Wagnorer he left with a nice severance of 23 million dollars! That is probably Q – triple the amount that you would have left with if you either resigned or was laid off.
It’s funny when it comes to the paranoid Right-wingers, when Bush Jr. and the Republicans were in the majority back before 2006 and spending like drunken sailors there wasn’t a problem…now there is a problem!
Typical Rightwing/Conservative talking points, if you can’t find anything-wrong make something up!
First it is, Oh! they are going to taxing the rich.
Funny it was the rich who put Obama in there.
Now it is, Oh! now Obama is going to change this country into socialism.
Sorry guys the 70 year old stuff isn’t going to work!
The Right-wingers are getting desperate, the more they spout about socialism and taxes the more they sound like fools!

The country is going in the wrong direction, NO DOUBT ABOUT THAT!!! I’d like to see some accountability from the government…as to where the $10 TRILLION HAS GONE?. I HAVEN’T SEEN ANY CHANGE HERE!? JUST HIGHER AND HIGHER TAXES. AM I GOING TO GET A RAISE OR A TAX CUT??????????
A BETTER ROUTE would have been a tax cut across the board! We can’t spend money we don’t have! I won’t be able to pay my TAXES so I’ll eventually lose my house and be put in a concentration camp and be shot DEAD!!!!! Is that the plan? You statist politicians are EVIL AND COWARDS!!!!!!!!! All you care about it greed and power! Do you not have a spine? GIVE US OUR COUNTRY BACK!!!!!!!
Mr. BO take your cult and go back to Kenya? Is that where you were born? I understand there is a statue in your honor in Kenya! I would like to know the truth along w/a few million Americans.

To the clueless democrate -
If you would read history and listen to more than mainstream press you would know that true conservatives did not support the rampant tax and spend, big govt programs of any administration for the last 40 years. We were demonized to suggest that personal freedoms and less government is a worthy cause. Now the demonization is cast on anyone the govt considers using to much energy or eats the wrong food, or agree’s with the 120 scientists that ran an ad in the top newspapers today challanging the premise of Global Warming. Every law passed is a freedom taken away. We have thousands of laws that really just take from one person and give to another. Where have I heard that before? How many more laws do you think it will take before we have your peace. Just today I heard, tobacco taxes jumped 60 cent, MN legislature is discussing limiting how many miles I can drive in a year and the latest Origama appointment favors international law over US soverenty. I don’t have to make this stuff up. It’s right in front of your eyes. Since you don’t understand what the text book definition of socialism is, I’ll keep it simple. Through scary global warming scenario’s, their not mine, we are to believe that supply needs to be curtailed for the common good. We can’t sit at home every day celibrating our small carbon footprint, so demand is going to go up. Cmon, you know the answer….so will prices and at an esculated rate with devalued dollars. How long will it take before they decide the life boat is full and some of us have to go? I hope you are not my neighbor, because you would be the first to give me up to save yourself.
It’s pretty short sighted if you think this issue is only 70 years old. I’m sure the McCarthy generation feels vindicated.

How will those who follow us deal with the national debt left to them? Obama avoided two direct questions regarding the debt, preferring to address the deficit instead! Jay Leno says it well . . . “According to the government, Rick Wagoner was forced to resign because of poor performance. That’s embarrassing . . . You run an organization that loses billions of dollars and then get fired by a guy who heads up an organization that loses trillions of dollars.”

You’re all Nuts! No wonder, the country is in the mess the Republicans left it!! You just won’t get over your lunacies and get in the boat and all row together. Yes we’re all different, but take a look at what we all need do after we’ve been raped! Let’s fix ourselves up! Remember it was the U.S. Super Ct. a little over 8 years ago that greased the skids to our current demise. Look at what Holder is doing with that senator from Alaska. He wants to get us back on the right path to what we used to be. Tontos!

President Obama is the greatest President in the entire history of the United States of America. He has restored America’s glory in the eyes of the world.
I’ve never seen a President more beloved both at home and abroad. He is more popular than Abraham Lincoln today. I’m so glad that he is the one who is representing us on the international stage. America made an excellent choice. We should be proud of ourselves! God bless our President and God bless America.

Wow, that’s quite a read folks! Republicans really are full of hatred! Have you forgotten Bush gave the first bail-out? With absolutely no accountability for the first $350 Billion? Obama has made the doors to the White House transparent for all of US to see what a mess the Republicans have made of our beloved country in the name of personal greed and arrogance. It’s very sad indeed. If you read much (most people responding obviously don’t), you would know that ‘Republican’ is the modern word for ‘Tory’… Yeah, that’s right – the guys who fought against America in the big Revolution. They want a ‘small government’ run by one person-the King. No, they have never cared for the poor, the hungry, the widow or, the child … the money goes in His pocket & His friends. Bush didn’t appoint his Cabinet and other important jobs to the best qualified, He appointed members of His ‘Skull & Bones’ buddies from Yale – you know that ‘secret society’ everyone talks about? Let’s not go into His and Her private, personal history – yuk! Back to the point – Yes, Pres. Obama is doing a great job. First he appointed the best talent US has to offer. Second he made ‘change’ as promised – in oh so many ways I’ve almost loss count – in ways I never thought a President would – for US for the ‘little people’ for those who were nameless & unidentified to Bushmen. Every day I admire him more – for his wise choices of leaders – Tim Geithner is absolutely brillant. Will it work? We’ll see. Nothing as terrible as this has ever happened to US before. We know for certain that doing business as usual was a road to annihilation. Like a heavy, fully-loaded ship, it takes time to turn that thing around… We have already seen the stock market up 8,000 pts in less than 8 wks! And people are starting to buy houses again! The idea about offering $3,000 for old cars (7+ yr. old); buy 2006+, was genius to kick-start the auto industry- it’s working! Making people fiscally accountable is a change in the right direction. Capping bonuses and salaries of multi-billion-dollar corporations who take government loans is a step in the right direction. Seek- and-finding tax havens and holding them accountable is another step in the right direction. Permitting science to progress in healing severe spinal injuries is a step in the right direction. If you think that’s ‘immoral’ perhaps we should un-do all the heart and kidney transplants… Our Constitution was written by Democrats not Republicans or, Tories as they were called back then. A woman’s right to choose is a Constitutional right. If you don’t like it then you need to change the Constitution. Sometimes, our rules and regulations don’t coincide with our laws but, it is the law and until the majority wants it to be amended, it remains. Pres. Obama has shown great courage, foresight and intelligence thus far. I have watched him very closely and continue to be pleasantly surprised. Of course, I’m no economist but, Tim Geithner is and I believe if anyone can get US through this mess the Republicans made, he can. Pres. Obama has made inroads with Russia, Cuba, Mexico, China, the Middle East – all who had been alienated by Bush & his inept diplomatic skills and downright rudeness and arrogance. So, YES, I think we’re finally on the right road!

Since the first call for help was made (911-01) we as citizens have been under partial martial law. We have been crusading against the Muslimism nation in a Jihad for the first time since the last crusades. As a result we have had our freedoms restricted by martial law.
Taxes must be carefully balanced, the rape of our working class need to cease. While we need to understand that the working poor prey on their own as well learning the evils of those that have.
Our taxes continue to rise, however the stimulus package most recently adapted appear to be starting to take on the appearance of the WPA while we still have the bitter taste of the first one offered. This is deeply misunderstood and was a major flaw. It will take time for these wounds to heal if everyone will grab it and run with the program. There are many steps in the process, before many of us will see the effects.
Obama is making a very good attempt to do well, listen and watch, time will tell.

We are all in the same boat. it makes no difference if you put a whole in the write side of the boat or the left side of the boat. it will still sink. we need to stop arguing witch side of the boat we are on and start working on keeping the boat afloat. The boat is the constitution.

Past history shows that socialism is not the right answer.Look at Russia and socialism in the past and then into communism . Its like u can’t see the forest fore the trees. Evidently the younger generation thinks the seniors have screwed up. People want something for nothing. Looks like it may become a wheelbarrow of money for a loaf of bread.Once again the government is not representing but dictating. Our cost of living goes up and income goes down, but not for congress. When we get to 80% of our money going for taxes maybe then people will see the light/
