Just When You Thought It Was Safe To Open Your Inbox

Google has a division that tracks spam.  Yes, Google.  And what they are finding is disturbing:  Spam is back!

What are we talking about?  Back in November a big spam disseminator was busted.  It was a web hosting service that companies used to send waves of spam all over.  The shut down led to a huge drop in the amount of spam showing up in in-boxes across the globe.  But now it appears spam is finding a way and making a comeback.

The Google group says spam is growing at a frightening rate of 1 percent a day.  The New York Times blog "Bits" says that 94 percent of all email is now spam.

I know most people have spam filters on their computers – I have mine set on “high” but can we expect this spam to be shut down again ?
Perhaps it’s harder to track down and eradicate ? If 96 per cent of e-mail is spam that’s 90 per cent too much.

The other day I came across a phrase new to me: “a mass e-mailer”. He was tried and found guilty but his cause is being championed by advocates of freedom.
