Would You Hire T.O.?

ABC News’ Stu Schutzman reports:

You don’t have to be a sports fan to consider this question. We’ve all encountered a Terrell Owens type, whether in the work place, at school or in the neighborhood. A person for whom there’s no mistaking the "me" in "it’s all about me". According to ESPN, Owens, the super star football player was released last night by the Dallas Cowboys despite considerable cost to the team (we’re talking millions). Apparently, despite his considerable talent, the team just wanted him out of there.

Dallas is only the latest team to have "had it up to here" with Owens. "He’s considered a locker-room cancer," says ESPN.com’s John Clayton. If statistics told the whole story, it would be that Terrell Owens is a great player who can have a great impact on his team’s ability to win — that’s on the field. Off the field — a very different story. Owens has constantly complained about his role; has publicly criticized teammates; alienated coaches and management and has totally turned off many fans and the media.

So pretend for a second that you’re a team general manager, it’s your decision to make. You’re under tremendous pressure to win now. An available player the caliber of Owens could go a long way in helping to make that happen. Do you take a chance on him? Does his upside outweigh his considerable downside? As John Clayton warns, "For T.O., let the buyer beware."

You’re the buyer…you make the call.

He’d fit right in with pebo and company.

T.O. was merely a scapegoat for the lack of leadership from Tony Romo and the Head Coach. Good thing now, is that there will be NO excuses and no T.O. to blame when they choke again this year.

cutting T.O. will be fatal for the Cowboys. we have a new stadium and it’s going to be hard to fill now. dispite his “downside” he is popular with many of the players on the team and is a potential morale problem. T.O. was one of a small handful of players who showed any zest for the game. he was a great playmaker.
i would retire now if i were T.O. and save my body from more destruction. if he should decide to play he will get a good contract, which he deserves.
everyone loves T.O. on sundays and hate him the rest of the week.
he is a complex personality but brings his life to the game.
good luck in whatever you decide to do T.O….like Nas says “the world is yours.”

I’ve been a Cowboy fan for many years…many years of dismal performance. I agree with the other comments that there are a lot of problems in this franchise besides T.O. But, I’m glad to see him go. His narcissistic drama detracted from the “team” attitude that they need to ever be a great team again. BTW – also agree with the Romo comment–moments of brilliance, but not a leader and not focused–he can go with T.O.

It’s not like we’d ever get him in Carolina, but sometimes you need that polarizing figure to shake-up stale workplaces.

Justmeor—although i disagree with you on the value T.O. brings to the team, i agree that the Cowboys need a better quarterback. i personally think this sets the Cowboys back years before playoff hopes. Jones spent alot on (and owes alot to) T.O.. the team needs infrastructure and work on offense. i think Phillips needs to go and there needs to be a new philosophy.
T.O. was worth every penny but with an overall ineffective offense how can anyone on that team shine?
T.O was also popular among many of the players and this could affect morale. but this is all academic. the Cowboys won’t be going to the superbowl for the next few years. i hope i’m wrong.

Paul – unfortunately, I have to agree with you on the prospects for the next few years…but, I hope we’re both wrong.
T.O. is good and would be even better if he could eliminate at least some of the negative influence–reduce drag and he and the Cowboys would move forward faster.
Here’s hoping the Cowboys find the right formula…sooner than later.

Justmeor—yeah i’m with you. there’s always hope. peace.

T.O. and all the rest like him, no team should employ them and let them find out how stupid of them missing out on all that $$$$$!
They might have enough to live on, but they will also be remembered as “cancerous” idiots!
