Arboretum Goes ‘Caddyshack’ on its Squirrels
You’ll recall Bill Murray marching around Bushwood Golf Course setting plastic explosives (in the shapes of little animals) into the gopher holes dotted across the fairways. And then the series of explosions which you’ll recall led to the devastation of that pristine course, caused vibrations which sank Danny Noonan’s winning putt and which, in the end, were survived by the gopher.
Flash forward to the Finch Arboretum in Spokane, Washington. It’s not gophers but ground squirrels. They are ripping up the grounds, leaving holes, generally being a menace. The solution? Fire in the hole. Take a look at our ABC affiliate KOMO’s piece.

I saw this on the news and I want one, or I want to use one for a few days…we have tried everything, baits, traps, sonic sensors, whirlygigs, etc spent a small fortune trying to get rid of moles, the only thing that has worked so far is the dog…and then I felt bad when he caught one…but that leaves me with a dirty dog and big holes in the yard….

A ground squirrel will never stop coming. They’re like the Viet Cong. The Varmint Cong.

No fair putting a hole in one – a ground squirrel, I mean. Ground squirrels are natural prey animals, so they’re multiplying like rabbits (wink wink). Now they have no natural enemies. We’ve already killed off any ground squirrel predators, and now we’re blaming the squirrels. Sounds like the situation with deer and any other wild animal that was part of the natural food chain until we interfered and assumed God’s role. Another example, mosquitoes. With herbicides, we’ve killed off the frogs and other amphibians that eat the mosquito larvae. The mosquitoes become tolerant of the killer, but the frogs die, and we have…you guessed it…more mosquitoes. I have a friend who has nearly every kind of cancer a person could have. As she sprayed Round up on the poison ivy all around the beautiful (but lifeless) stream in her backyard, she blamed the adjacent golf course for killing the frogs.
