Unemployed 48 Year Old Woman Sings for Simon Cowell — A Star is Born

Meet Susan Boyle.  She is 48 years old, single, unemployed and hails from a small Scottish town.  This past weekend she took to the stage of the British program "Britain’s Got Talent" and the rest, as they say, is history. She walks out under the lights, the crowd snickering.  Boyle tells the audience and judges — led by Simon Cowell — that her desire is to sing like the famed Elaine Page.  The crowd laughs.  The judges dismiss.  And then the music starts and she begins. Boyle wows the audience, stuns the judges and based on the comments from those who have watched the show on-line — brought many to tears.  She sings "I Dream A Dream" from Les Miserables (Click here to watch).  Two years ago, a guy named Paul Potts strolled out on the show’s stage and wowed the world with his rendition of Puccini’s Nessun Dorma.  He has gone from obscurity to celebrity with a best selling record. Seems another diamond in the rough has been found.

people, people, people. Simon already knew she could sing. It was not a surprise to the judges! She had to audition. Hello. Remember paul potts.

hess, hess, hess. She didn’t audition to the judges. Looked to me like they were truly surprised.

the video was the audition. Just like in America’s got Talent or American Idol or any other show produced by Simon Cowell. Thousands of people line up and must audition in front of the cameras and the judges and (in the case of Britain and America’s Got Talent) a live audience.

As a teacher with 39 years experience, I can not think of a better way to illustrate to my students that one should not judge by appearances than showing this video. As I will be showing this video all day to my eleventh grade homeroom and senior classes,I thank you ABC for making this video available. How I wish that I had a permanent copy of this news feature to show future students!
