Summer Fighting Season Begins

Mike Boettcher reports from the frontlines of Afghanistan:

Along the border between Nuristan and Konar provinces in eastern Afghanistan sits Camp Bostick. Just two miles from the Pakistan border, Bostick controls several smaller Combat Outposts that come under frequent attack. Compared to the same time a year ago attacks have increased 120% and commanders here expect activity to increase further as the Summer fighting season begins.

If there wasn’t a war happening, there would be time to enjoy the scenery around Camp Bostick. It is situated on the Kunar River and is surrounded by stunning mountain ranges.

Carlos and I will be embedded here for at least two weeks. The attached video sets the scene.

Just a note of clarification, Mike. The Taleban is fighting a war with us. We’re fighting a counter-insurgency with them: completely different rules of engagement. I have a USAF pilot son embedded w/the Army in Paktia province. If you need further clarification, talk w/any CO. thx! And keep your head down.
