Closing Arguments: Accused of Witchcraft – Responding in the Congo
Dan Harris and our team in the Congo report tonight in stark detail the exorcism ceremonies performed by Christian pastors on children accused of being witches — all in the name of Jesus.
It is a problem that the Congolese government has shown little interest in addressing appropriately. So tonight, we ask: If the U.S. is serious about protecting human rights around the world, do we have a responsibility to address these abuses in Central Africa? And if so, what action should be taken?
Tell us what you think.

Jesus said many will say Lord Lord didn’t I cast out demons in your name…and Jesus would send them away saying I knew you not. The only witchcraft going on is coming from the Congo pulpits.A true christan exhibits Christ like behavior. This is not Chist- like.

Missionaries have reported cases of demon possession in South America, Africa, Peru, and other areas of the world for close to 50 years now. This applies to almost all denominations and if asked by the media would respond in the affirmative. Before reporting this as a case of abuse by the Pastors and pulpits, check on the reality of the allegation-It will probably scare the reporter to death but it would be a real search for answers than an off hand opinion based on their own backgrounds and experiences!

As a representative of the Church of Satan, i truely feel the need to respond to tonight’s show. For centuries Satanists and those accused of practicing witchcraft have been accused of ritual abuse of children. I think this program should the immoral ritual practice employed by these so called christians attempting to expell demons. funny though most certainly the common christian will be defend their church by saying that these so called christians are not apart of their church’s practices. however, what about the catholic ministers who repeatedly molest children. are they not apart of your glamourous church? lastly i would like to say that these so called christians accuse these kids of being witches. however, the definition of magick provided by Aleister Crowley is the manipulation of energy in conformity with the Will. is not the “christian” minister shown in your program practicing magick themselves. by they way any of you christians that wish to attack me sprititually i most remind you that i am your enemy therefore as Jesus would do, you should forgive me. not attack or hate me. i pray for you all. let the Lord save your souls.

Exorcism on children is an abysmally ignorant and horrific practice, rooted in superstition. I would guess the practice is both tribal and church influenced. I hope something can be done to stop it.

THE devil is a liar and the lord of lies. This is absolutley ridiculous that people are preying on the poor and needy. God is not a God to be mocked! We can not do things in the name of God and say someone is a witch. This stems from greed- which is in fact a sin. This also stems from lack of education- the government is not very concerned because they are probably making money from the events.
I pray in the name of Jesus that these people be healed- every generational curse be broken- every attack of the enemy concerning these children be broken.
I would also say that the people parish for the lack of knowledge. SO if you have big eyes and your stomach protudes you are operating in witchcraft?? NO, YOU ARE HUNGRY!!!!! The govt gets money to aid in hunger and resources but they put in other areas that are benefical to them.
I can go on about this but will stop here. THE USA can not save the world!

These children are definitely being abused, as are many children, all over the world. I am sad for ALL of them. The government in Congo should do something about it just like we do here in the US, but I think we Americans should leave that battle for them to handle and we Americans should look right here at home and take care of the many children right here in the US who are suffering in a lot of different areas, i.e. neglect, abuse, starvation; need I go on? It’s time for the US to worry more about the people right here at home, rather than trying to solve other countries problems. JMOP

The abominations that are committed in the name of Christianity sadden me. These actions by a few show us that Jesus will be here in a few years to take care of all this, (mid 2013 to be in the park). Any actions by a Christian that lack Love, Truth, Mercy and Grace rest assured they are working for the other guy!

I wept as I watched this! In Congo, as in neighboring countries, religion has become a disease, a virus that is responsible for maiming, killing and traumatizing hundreds, maybe even thousands of innocent children. Shame on them all! I only regret that I cannot cause the suffering of those who perpetrate such hideous crimes in the name of their god! Please, someone do something! This is 2009 and the Witch Trials have been over for three-hundred years! I AM a witch and I would gladly take the place of these beautiful, innocent children! Seems to me that the only way to bring true peace to humanity is to banish all religions.

This story deeply saddened and disgusted me. My heart just broke for those poor babies. I can’t even imagine having to go through torture like that and then be rejected by your own parents. I would take in a few of those babies in a heartbeat, but with adoption so expensive and complicated its not even an option for a childless couple to adopt homeless children these days. If it wasn’t for this process, I would fly over there tomorrow and rescue one.

……Jesus said ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the Kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” Mark 10:14.
These ‘pastors’, rather than ministering to their communities, heralding the good news of salvation thru Jesus Christ, are preying on the people’s cultural superstitions while spinning a personal profit.
“Hoping” something can be done to stop it does nothing. With a government too afraid of the power of ‘important people’ to intervene on behalf of these children, it is up to the rest of us to do something!

This is one reason why judgment begins at the pulpit. I would urge people not to think of this as simply being horrifying…the same sort of thing happens right here in the United States. They may not use hot wax, swing children around or beat them…but they will tell them they have a demon and they will “cast” them out. And yes it is done for the same reasons…greed and power. And they use the same kinds problems to manipulate people in to believing they have demons, adults and children alike. The people are so looking for an answer for all their problems they will gladly literally blame the devil if someone tells them that is the reason for all their problems. And they get taught that if they are truly following Christ they too will cast out demons and exhibit “extraordinary gifts” as proof that they are indeed Christians and that they are indeed doing God’s will. And of course if you don’t have the “gifts” or you are not “healed” you must not believe. God does not fear doubt. God will not change his plans if I or anyone else questions something.

Dear Dave of Detroit,
While nearly every denomination has it’s share of Satan’s minions carrying out acts of such depravity (Child molestation, etc, etc., a list too long to name. Jesus said “by THEIR FRUIT ye shall now them…” this means if the acts they carry out Lack Love, Mercy, Grace and positive affirmation, they are not the Lords. If you think Satan is oh so powerful, read revelation chapter 13 and 21. What am I saying “don’t throw out the baby with the bathwater”. I’ll be praying for you and your family that you find Love and peace that Jesus brings, along with a good church…there out there.

Let’s face it…this country is rife with ignorance and superstition. The so-called christian ministers have found themselves a comfortable money making niche in the midst of this so called witch hunt. Only a generation or two removed, these self proclaimed christians were worshiping idols and deferring to the wishes of the local tribal medicine man or shaman until the advent of christian missionarys. Wherupon the name of the religion changed but the practices remained the same. It is evident from the stupid comments by the congolese government officials that this ignorance and hold over from the old beliefs runs rampant from the lowliest of believers to the heads of the government. A money making ploy at best, and a way of showing the masses whose JU-JU is the strongest!!!
Power corrupts and Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely…the congolese governments way to control HEARTS AND MINDS….at the lowest common denominatior. Churches of all denominations should raise a hell of a furor over this issue if they have the guts to do it!!!

Ya know, I just got done watching this episode, and it just plain ol pissed me off. You got a dude swinging a child around his back. You have a dude grabbing a childs head, you have a dude saying things to a child, which would definately, affect them the rest of there lives. Which I dont agree with. However the problem I have with, is the ability with ABC Broadcsting to broadcast an episode like this, however, they do not broadcast events of children getting their arms, legs, or heads cut off. It just seems to me that ABC wants you to know of things going on in the world, without offending anybody to the point that nobody will watch.
This alone is very, very, sad. It may be true that what is going on in Africa, is going on, But why tell the american public this? do you not have the balls to say what is really going on? Or does the american public not want to know. Is it that the american public only has the stomach for this much stuff, because they can deal with child abuse, but not child slaughter. If this country thinks its ok to watch an episode of a couple kids get thrown around, and thinks thats terrible, { the parents should be brought up on charges } well then this broadcast company should show some clips about the children having their arms, legs, heads, and just about everything else they have to themselves cut off. Why is this company reporting things like witchcraft, when there is mutilation and death going on over there? maybe because mutilation and death does not get as much in sympathy as child abuse?

Sorry I did not answer the question…
if the U.S. is serious about protecting human rights around the world, do we have a responsibility to address these abuses in Central Africa? And if so, what action should be taken?
YES ACTION SHOULD BE TAKEN…BY THE CHURCH. “THE CHURCH” AT LARGE CREATED THIS PROBLEM. “THE CHURCH” SHOULD CORRECT IT. As a government the United States also claims religious freedom. The United States is a government not a religion. Should we support the human need as we would any other disaster…as much as we can sure…but the GOVERNMENT of the United States should not be responsible to fix a problem created by “THE CHURCH”! And no I am not calling out any particular flavor of Christian religion. It is “THE CHURCHES” problem, “THE CHURCH” needs to police it’s own. It is their obligation to disprove these charlatans. The governments of the afflicted countries need to prosecute the laws of their government. And the churches, our government and citizens can petition the afflicted governments to take seriously the welfare of their citizens regardless of race, class, cast, creed or whatever socio-economic divisions are implemented by their societies.

Northstar…you hit the nail on the head..well done!!! Churches of all denominations should raise such a stink over this travesty of justice, that the government of the congo will have to take heed…not only to curb the problem but to vindicate the actions of missionarys who have labored to do ” The Churches Work ” over the last 200 years, not always to the benefit of mankind !!! So CHURCHES…YOU CAUSED IT …YOU FIX IT !!!
Some of the most heinous crimes in history have been perpetrated in the name of christianity…and this is definitely one to make “Jesus Weep.”

Where are the true Christian Churches and their missionaries? Why are they not involved in stopping these unforgivable acts by these despicable, sick men and women? What I find even more frustrating is that the reporter said coming to this site would get me information on how to help? Where is it? Why can’t the information be given on the show? Was that just a way to get people to the website? I have searched this site completely and have not found any information for me to help in any way. Could you please send me informatiion or post, in an obvious place, any information that I can use to help this situation? Is there a charity? Is there any way of contacting the nice gentleman, the only true Christian in the show, in order to help his cause? Is his a one man show?

While Dan Harris on behalf of ABC Night Line presented a very heart wrenching report on child abuse in the Congo, it incorrectly led many of the viewers to believe that this was the direct cause of Christianity at work in Africa; reference the many viewers comments. Dan carefully presented his views casting Christianity to the forefront as the root cause rather than emphasizing that Christianity was as much a victim as the children being abused. I challenge ABC and Dan Harris to present a similar program that highlights the benefits that true Christians have given to Africa and other third world countries for example medical treatment, food programs fresh water wells and education.

You are right Mary it would be nice if ALL shows that say “you can help” had a great big ‘ol button that said simply HELP or YOU CAN HELP with a drop down list of corresponding episodes. Most web sites are anything but easy to find that sort of info.

I beleive if the Federal Government can continue to fight this endless war and spend so much of our tax dollars, I’d rather use that money to help these poor children in Congo.
Posted by: Renee | May 22, 2009, 1:49 am 1:49 am
Well Jimobal if Christianity does not want the taint of rouge priests and pastors they need to take a stand and clean house.
Who would you blame for what was done to those children and their parents for that matter? Who was manipulating that situation so that desperate dare I say ignorant people are allowing and participating in the abuse of their own flesh and blood?
“THE CHURCH” has done a horrible job of policing itself and disavowing illegitimate practices. Dare I say why? Because they are too concerned with being nice, with not “hurting” a brother, with showing only love…would you not discipline your child and no I don’t mean a physical punishment. I had a father whom believed in that do you know what my attitude became? Defiant, to the point that I would welcome the hit with a steel jaw. Do you really think that Jesus is walking with these men? I doubt it. And yes by not taking decisive action to disavow such atrocities “THE CHURCH” has created this problem. They have allowed ignorance, greed and power to become the face of “THE CHURCH” there.

I can’t stop crying! It is so sad what they are doing to these children .All of the adults involved should be in jail..What is really sad is that they proclaim to do this by the power of Jesus..My Jesus says this” The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free. ”
Luke 4:18

We absolutely have an obligation to reach out and voice concern for this incredible suffering. However, it is not our duty to “take over” or enforce our laws abroad.
But for the love of humanity, we’ve got to get up and get the world’s attention to these situations. Please – for the safety and future of our world’s children.

Questions_Comments: The Nightline episode on Christian pastors excorcising witches last night was pure sensationalism. There was no responsible discussion of the centuries-old practice of witchcraft in many African countries. These practices are only “Christian” in name. Spiritualists change their orientations to reflect current and even “Western power.”. What is done to the vulnerable is sad, but it has happened for centuries and it has nothing to do with Christianity as such, and you knew that.

For over 5 years U.S. Armed Forces have been fighting in Iraq. After the deceptive cloak of WMD was lifted, our focus shifted to promoting democracy and freeing the Iraqi people from a tyrannical government. Why did America just stop at Iraq? Unfortunately, the world is full of nations with atrocious and tyrannical governments, yet the U.S. doesn’t come to the rescue, and march in waving an American flag purporting to institutionalize democracy and justice. If the U.S. government does not speak out against the rampant Congolese child abuse and other worldwide government perpetrated or government neglected atrocities, then they are hypocrites; tarnishing the legacy of our men and women who served in Iraq. America invaded Iraq on flimsy evidence.
The horrid abuse happening to Congolese children, as documented by Nightline, is real. How can the U.S. government not speak out against it? Accordingly, the U.S. cannot, as it has done in the past, throw money at the problem either. For far too long, nations in Africa have been seen as the World’s charity cases; ripe for star-studded fundraising and publicity. Yet when the cameras stop clicking and the lights stop flashing, many citizens in the nations throughout Africa languish. America and other international governments have to stop giving finance and aid to struggling nations without accountability.
Some of the African governments must be corrupt and squander international aid, in order for so many of their nations to continually remain at this level of squalidness! Aid has been flowing to nations in Africa for over 30 years. It would be interesting to see where Africa stands in terms of the amount of aid it has received in a 30 year span compared to other continents. Thirty years is a generation! Where are the success stories? Where are the thriving nations? Are there no successful nations in Africa who’ve benefitted from the billions of dollars in aid that have been poured into Africa over the years? This is a story that nightline should investigate.
Also, equally as irresponsible as the U.S. government not speaking out against the Congolese child abuse, would be for the U.S. to give aid to the Congo and other African nations without demanding transparency and accountability in terms of how the aid is managed and the funds are spent; although, I’m not sure if this can be achieved. The U.S. government is having a hard time keeping track of the funds spent by many of the banks who took bailout money; I doubt it would fare any better with keeping track of any the international aid it doles out.

It is obvious that these pastors are a fraud and I cannot believe that the crew of dateline missed one detail in the footage that proves it.
There is a close-up on one of them, the one with golden jewelry. The medallion he wears around the neck has the Islamic name of God written in Arabic (Allah). For a Christian clergyman to wear this is equivalent to a Mullah wearing a cross!!

I’m glad that this terrible thing has been exposed! The problem in the report lies in calling the abusers “Christians”
What they are doing has nothing to do with Jesus! The Bible teaches against causing harm to children!Jesus loves children. Satan is the author of Evil, and he is trying to discredit the LORD’s name! You need to say instead, the people claim to be…and then tell the truth about Jesus as He is presented in the Bible.

No, we do not have any responsibility for what you describe in the Congo.
The USA needs to mind its own business and stay focused on solving its own problems:
1. Getting a single-payer, universal, nationalized pension system.
2. Getting a single-payer, univesal, nationalized health-care system.
3. Defending our country, including stopping alien invasion at its southern border.
4. Establising a viable financial and economic system.
5. Reducing overcrowding of the country.
Every government employee should have assignments in their performance goals that contribute these five basic goals for the USA. Things like getting involved in the Congo are distractions that they should be expected to avoid.
If any other countries are to intervene in the Congo, it should be the European countries that siezed and exploited African countries over the past century. The USA never did any of this exploitation. Why should the USA taxpayers now pay to clean up the mess?

I am a Congolese Christian and Lawyer in Kinshasa bar where those atrocities against children are taking place. I was the first one to be astonished by this report. I was not aware that such unimaginable abuses were occurring. I decided to put in place an organization that will defend the victims and bring to justice the authors of such acts. We’ll also find the way to adopt those kids who need it. For this purpose I would welcome all suggestions and ideas that would help us to be effective in defense of those helpless kids.

My Husband, Mike and I believe in treating children with love and kindness.
Children are the future of the families they are born into and require healthy direction from the parents and extended family. In out travels worldwide I have implimented many programs that give children a chance to grow up in the healthiest of environments. Nany countries now have family programs in place.
