‘Older White Senators Grilling the First Hispanic…Court Nominee’
The day is young but here are some quotes:
"Personal experiences affect the facts that judges choose to see…I wonder whether by ignoring our differences as women or men of color we do a disservice both to the law and society." — Judge Sonia Sotomayor, from remarks made at the University of California at Berkeley in October 2001.
"I think this is a bold and fairly masterful political stroke by President Obama. I mean, having older white senators up there grilling the first Hispanic – up-from-the-boot-straps, Hispanic Supreme Court nominee – that’s a tough one for us, okay, let’s just be honest about that."
– GOP strategist Phil Musser, to ABCNews.com
"General Motors Corp. says not enough of its bondholders agreed to swap their debt for company stock, meaning the troubled automaker is almost certainly headed for bankruptcy." — morning lead from the Associated Press, dateline Detroit
"In better times, many employees of General Motors called their company ‘Generous Motors’ because of its rich benefits. Now G.M. may stand for something else: Government Motors." — Micheline Maynard and David Sanger, New York Times
"And if I do get appointed, that means I bought it." — Sen. Roland Burris, D-Ill., secretly recorded offering to (and fretting about whether to) write a check to then Governor Rod Blagojevich.

Hey, you forgot Sotomayor’s racists comment from 2001. Or do you show your bias in the media and not consider what she said as racist because she doesn’t fit the racists profile (WHITE PEOPLE) Either be unfair to everyone or be fair to everyone, you oppurtunists.

Dan Burkard;
unless you are the kind who get their “news” from Limbaugh and Fox, you will realize what she stated is simply a statement of fact. People approach historic documents like the Law, or the Scriptures through what interpreters call “horizon.” What do you think explains the multitudes in Dallas right now (including) today that DNA is vindicating after decades of unfair imprisionment? After all you need more than one sentence or a sound bite to understand what she is saying.

Dan Burkard,
You need to understand that in that speech in Berkeley she had just referenced Justice O’Connor’s oft quoted citation that a “wise woman and a wise man might reach the same conclusions.” She was expressing disagreement with that notion.
Today in the Dallas Morning News another man cleared by DNA. He is a 47 year old man who was convicted of rape in 1986. He was 24 at the time. He was sentenced to life in prison. Wrongly convicted based on wrong identification and police work building a case against him. That makes the 20th one in Dallas County cleared by DNA.

Why does this blog say Sotomayor is the “first Hispanic…Court nominee?” She is not. Miguel Estrada, a Bush nominee, has that honor but was not confirmed.

Is it the intention for this administration and ABC, CBS, NBC to provide racists remarks from their reporters and Obama so as to incite more racial tensions and civil unrest? Why are WHITE reporters so anxious to constantly stir the muck about “white people being upset” regarding a black president and a Latino nominee if it is NOT for yellow journalism?
Why is it ok for a Hispanic female judge to make racists remarks to have it accepted by the masses? Why is ok for a black president to make racists remarks and we, the public, should accept this behavior?
If any of these remarks were made by a WHITE president or judge about a black/Spanish MALE judge – well that person’s feet would be held to the fire.
Sotomayor is not the only successful “minority” woman – her experiences are no different than mine being the first Italians to move into a German “ghetto”. Our windows were broken; dogs being told to “sic” them as we played in our yards nor allowed to walk on their pavements because the Germans didn’t want the “wop” grease on their pavements.
Those experiences did not, nor could I, allow it to cloud my decisions, behaviors or abilities to care for my multi-racial patients, no matter what their color, nationality or religion.
As a nurse we care for whole person within in their illness/injury in the MEDICAL science field – compassion, not empathy is needed. I could NOT do my job if I, as a professional nurse, functioned in “empathy” and neither should a judge.
All judges should make their decisions based on the confines of the LAW, not empathy or personal experiences. THAT IS HER JOB AS A JUDGE.
If she based her decision making solely on her experiences, she is NOT doing the plaintiff or defendant “justice.” I would NOT want her to preside on my court case.
