Oprah Offers KFC Coupon, Internet Abuzz
ABC News’ Russell Goldman reports: Oprah Winfrey, whose endorsements have turned little-known books into best sellers and helped a little-known senator become the president, is putting her seal of approval on KFC’s newest menu item – grilled chicken. A coupon available exclusively through the talk-show host’s Web site, oprah.com, had been searched for so frequently on the Internet that “Oprah Winfrey KFC coupons” was the fifth most searched item on Google Trends by Wednesday afternoon, hours after being posted. “KFC locations” and “Unthink KFC,” the name of the grilled chicken promotion, rounded off the site’s top 10 most searched terms. Interest in the coupons even made it to France where one Web Site described the frenzy as “un buzz aux States.” KFC, formerly known as Kentucky Fried Chicken and a subsidiary of Yum Brands, launched the grilled chicken line two weeks ago and has offered free samples in some participating locations. Rick Maynard, a KFC spokesman, said the reason the company sought out Winfrey to promote the product was “pretty self explanatory. She’s got a huge audience who trust her.” The details of the deal KFC and Winfrey worked out to offer the coupons, Maynard said, were confidential. Oprah announced the promotion during her show on Tuesday. Harpo, Winfrey’s production company, would not further comment on the deal. The downloadable coupon, good only from Wednesday morning to Thursday at noon, allows holders to receive”two pieces of grilled chicken, two individual sides and a biscuit.” Some have called Winfrey’s impact on brands she endorses the “O Factor,” and small companies whose products make the media magnate’s annual Favorite Things list have seen their sales skyrocket overnight. Oprah has made no secret of struggling with her weight and dieting. KFC is promoting the new line as a healthy alternative to its traditional fried chicken. An Original Recipe fried chicken breast is 400 calories, versus 119 for the grilled breast, according to the KFC website.

Let’s see…….
-You ask the queen of endorsement to endorse your product.
-Then your coupon partner cannot deliver.
-Next, if your were able to get the coupon to print, the store can refuse to honor it.
I guess the folks at KFC got into their tag line too much. UNTHINK!

I was fortunate to be given a coupon. I went and got a meal and I was pleased.I didn’t have to wait long and there were no issues with my coupon. Thank you Oprah and KFC for doing something nice for other people. It’s amazing how unpleasant people (mostly adults) can be when they don’t get what they want.
Hopefully others will have an experience similar to mine.

I love Oprah, but this time, she owes her fans (like me!) a huge explanation and an apology. Coupon was very difficult to print. Then drove up to the KFC way before noon (I didn’t want them to say they ran out) and a sign on the drive thru said “No coupons accepted in drive thru. No exceptions.” So I parked to go inside. There was a sign on the door that said, “Because of high demand, we cain’t accept anymore coupons.” THEIR mis-spelling, not mine! Note that they didn’t say they ran out, just that they could not (really WOULD NOT) accept the coupons. I feel betrayed by Oprah and her folks, and this is upsetting to me, as I’ve always trusted her advice! I would not have bothered had it just been a KFC promo, as I would have suspected it might not be legit. But Oprah endorsed it… Oprah, how are you going to fix this????
There were lots of angry folks in the KFC parking lot, leaving without any chicken!!!

After finally getting the coupon to download the day it came out, I went to the KFC in Morrow GA. which had a sign on the door saying they were no longer accepting on-line coupons ending with 1234. Of coarse that is what mine ended with so I did not bother going inside after going out of my way to get there. I was very disappointed. This whole thing was not handled in a proper manor.

I had no problems printing the coupon, but have not been able to redeem it.
Yesterday I was told that they were having trouble with their griller and it would be an hour before they could have any grilled chicken. Today when I tried again to redeem the coupon, there were signs posted everywhere that they would not accept any coupons and that they didn’t have any chicken in any style in they store for purchase. What a shame! I have tried the grilled chicken before and thought it was very good, but with this experience it will be a long time before I return.

Oh yes..I am a KFC Manager and you guys are mostly right….It was an awful experience for us too….we were not told until 3 days before about this deal. This is what happens when you don’t let the people that handle the product know what is going on. The suppliers were behind on our products so we couldn’t even get the supplies we ordered….besides the fact that the busier stores were already having a hard time keeping up with demand. It was one big stress factor and one big mess. It was an awful experience for many people…the Manager, the Crew and the Customers. As a Manager that cares about her customers I was disappointed in it all..

I’m really disappointed at the negative things that people are saying about this offer . if the coupon didnt work for you oh well life goes on . oprah made an initiative to do something good if there were kinks that’s life. Most of you throwing ur negativity probably haven’t lifted a finger to help anyone much less thousands she’s only one woman some of you people are acting like she’s a super hero get a grip people come on

I work across from a KFC in Greensboro NC. Sorry to say the coupon caused traffic jams and long lines of cars trying to get in the parking lot. On Wednesday the Fire Marshall closed the lot and said there were too many people inside the restaurant. Today, they closed the drive-thru and only allowed 20 people at a time inside. Tempers were short, and customers said employees were rude. This was a gracious offer on the part of Oprah and KFC. But I don’t see how any restaurant could handle the tidal wave of customers without additional help. It just left bad feelings between customers and employees. Too bad.

KFC in San Antonio, Texas would not honor the coupons. Even though there were lines at the registers, they did not tell us or post a sign saying they would not honor the coupons. Instead, they made us wait in line then at the register we were told they would not honor it. What a rip off, they used Oprah and just wanted to get people in. Once in people were hungry by the time they got to the register that they just paid for thier food. I HATE KFC AND I AM BOYCOTTING THEM AGAIN. I went two and a half years without eating thier food so it can be done.

I have been told not to bother. I helped others print their coupons and got mine. I love how they are saying that Oprah bought us chicken. If it was paid for then why isn’t it there. It is a shame that Oprah foolishly put her name on it but this is a big KFC farce and should be held accountable. They gave a short window to print them and then a short time to redeem them. This was all the fault of KFC. Someone posted PETA was mad at Oprah well calm down because KFC is on your side and looks like they are saving the birds.

The coupon from KFC is a scam. KFC wanted to get your address and email for future promotions. “suddenly” the coupons are no good because KFC’s techology (my own printer) was false. Yeah, sure. It was always going to be a scam. Oprah should be ashamed and should run an expose and should apologize to us, her fans, for being a accompice in the scam, even if unknowlingly. She should “roast” KFC

There is nothing compassionate about feeding humans other dead animals. Oprah should be ashamed of herself. There are much better food and healthier options that are available to help the poor and needy, than to promote the atrocities committed against another living species.

I printed out 4 KFC free meal coupons and went to cash in 1 at the KFC in Orange Park FL. I was told that due to the huge demand they would’nt be able to honor the free coupon at this time. There were 2 cars in the parking lot and an entire tray of grilled chicken in the clear case behind the person telling me they didnt have enough chicken!! I asked what if I wanted to buy some grilled chicken and she said then I could have some. I was told that I have to fill out a form, giving my name and address and attach my coupon to the back and another coupon would be mailed to me at a later time. Wow so KFC is going to try and recoupe some of its losses be selling millions of names to ad companys!! I filled out the form but made up a fake name with my address just to see how much junk mail I will get with the bogus name

WHAT a scam! KFC got the free press for their new product by claiming to be giving something away but then offering a coupon for a “later” date. When I went to the restaurant, employees claimed that they couldn’t tell real coupons from fakes. KFC designed the coupons and chose to distribute them online, but their employees can’t tell the real thing from a fake. I think KFC is a fake — hofefully their scam will get as much press as the “free” offer!

“OK, well hold on, let me see what I want to order.”
“Oh we have the two piece grilled meals, but you’re going to have to pay for it.”
“But I thought you said overwhelming demand….”
“Yes, you can still get it free, but you have to mail in a paper with your name on it….”

Giveth but Taketh Away! No one needs anything free in this world because nothing is free as demonstrated by the promo. I could not be an employee and tell someone that the coupon can not be honored because the demand is overwhelming(with trays of the free grilled chicken in the background). A company that forces their employees to lie to customers that have supported them for years should be aware of karma.

What a scam – my sons and I printed two coupons, went to KFC and the sign on the door said “raincheck”. Inside they gave me another form to complete and mail in, so a raincheck would be mailed to me. And then WHAT ? A raincheck for the raincheck, if I ever finally get a coupon that will work ? My family and I will go to Jewel Osco for chicken.
