Quotes of the Day
"He never signed up to be in the auto business. His election was about ending the culture wars. The old divisions were supposed to fade away. The economic mess? He inherited it. But with the final collapse of an industry titan into bankruptcy — the move the president and the company’s management have spent 2009 trying to avoid — now comes a risky effort that is entirely the property of President Obama. The bankruptcy filing serves a primary purpose aimed at saving General Motors. It serves a secondary purpose of ending the era where the president could plausibly blame his predecessor for various economic messes…This purchase does not come with a warrantee." – Rick Klein, ABC News
"I never ever could have believed that one day this thing would go that way. We were so successful." – Jim Wangers, retired GM executive and author of "Glory Days," about Pontiac's stellar run in the 1960s, quoted in The New York Times
"General Motors and Citigroup will no longer be traded on the Dow Jones Index as of June 8, 2009." – The ABC News Business Unit, paraphrasing a Dow Jones statement, on one of the more remarkable signs of the financial times
“I'm not blowing smoke — this is coming together.” Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus, D-Mont., on the prospects for health care reform legislation this year

I look at US made cars, and besides Ford (who take some of their designs from their European operations), the designs are horrid, really awful. It no wonder Pontiac has failed when you look at the designs floating out there. It’s like the US car industry just doesn’t employ the same type of designers that a company like VW (with Audi) employ. I would buy a Hyundi before I would buy a Chevy or a Pontiac.

This was bound to happen the way the car designers were old white men and management was did nothing to improve moral. I worked there for 32 years and saw GM become a dump site. This isn’t suprising when management gets bonuses for cutting employees and sufficent steps to make the products enticing for the buyer. No, this is not suprising, the way these ‘White shirts’ know everything and refuse to take suggestions from the people on the line or the buying public.

I blame U.S. citizens for the car dealerships demise. If they had bought U.S. cars we wouldn’t be in this fix. I have a Jeep and you couldn’t pay me to buy Japanese…To me this is un-American. I try to always (sometimes the China label sneaks past me) buy American products. But to intentionally buy a Japanese car is totally unconscienable to me. In 40-50 years you aren’t going to see these Lexus’ and Nissans in car shows as you do today with old Fords and Chevies. We had several good car manufacturers and now what, we have Japanese car manufacturers and that’s it…you did it to yourselves…you have only yourselves to blame…
