Clinton and the Taj Hotel in Mumbai

ABC's Kirit Radia reports: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton arrived today in Mumbai, where she'll be staying in the hotel Taj Mahal Palace & Tower — one of the scenes of last November's deadly and destructive terror attacks. As we saw today with the bombings of the Marriot and Ritz-Carlton in Jakarta, hotels are soft targets and the siege on the Taj and other sites in Mumbai left over 170 dead and wounded hundreds more.   Tomorrow Clinton will participate in a memorial to honor those lost in the attacks. Indian media report that the Taj has stepped up security ahead of Clinton's stay. Guests are subject to background checks and a heavy security presence is deployed in and around the hotel. The "Heritage" wing of the hotel, where dignitaries usually stay, was damaged during the attacks and is still being rebuilt, so Clinton will be staying in the "Tower" wing. Her entire floor had already been cordoned off in anticipation of her arrival, Indian media reports. The Mumbai attacks remain a very sensitive issue in India. Earlier this week the Indian government said peace talks with archrival Pakistan would be put on hold until Islamabad helps bring those behind last year's attack to justice.

I believe that Hillary should have been traveling with Obama on his world tour unless his tour was a vacation not business such as Hillary’s. She is a good secretary of state choice but she should have been the VP not Biden.

The questions that have been asked “is Obama ignoring Hillary”? It appears that way. And what has Biden been doing lately. Cheney was always in the news. Apparently Obama chose him because he isn’t in the limelight like Hillary would have been as VP. In fact, she probably would have outshined Obama. Omama and Hillary should have more meetings together on world affairs than they do. However, Michelle Obama does not like Hillary as reported and you never see them talking together. Behind closed doors I think Michelle gives Obama some advice on certain people.

If only we could have Sarah representing us to the Indians. She would have brought a peace pipe to smoke and some blankets and beads for diplomatic discussions.

The information about “her husband staying in the Taj is wrong”.Bill clinton did not stay at Taj hotel but rather at Oberoi which was also a target in the 2008 mumbai attacks.

Just wondering…since we have US Embassies all over the world, why don’t political figures stay there? Wouldn’t it be more secure and practical?

To Jiva’s comment: Staying in the embassy instead of a hotel in the city indicates that you are here not to be cloistered but to mingle with the locals. It usually a gesture appreciated by the locals and helps build relationships. Staying at the embassy would denote that you do not trust the host country or its people. Sort of like staying in the green zone in Iraq.

I could still remember the night of the attack. Without knowing anything about it, i just noticed how the word mumbai has became the big trend tweet in twitter. It was amazing with technology getting the read the live feeds from someone on the scene via twitter. Can’t believe time flew by very fast
