Closing Arguments: Obama’s Beer Diplomacy

Cambridge officials today released the 911 call that preceded the arrest of black Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates by white police officer Sgt. James Crowley. And contrary to the police report, the caller did not identify Gates by race. Local officials say they're eager to clear the air. As is President Obama, who will host Gates and Crowley at the White House Thursday night at 6 p.m. for a conciliatory beer. So tonight, we ask you: Is bringing the two together for a beer a contrived attempt to solve what is a deeper problem? Tell us what you think. You can follow "Nightline" anytime on Twitter: http://twitter.com/Nightline.

Does anyone really believe that President Obama would have invited Gates and the cop for a beer IF Obama had not made his foolish remark about how “…stupid…” the police actions were?

I got to give this one to Obama. Nice move.

This is just putting a bandaid on gunshot wound. There is too much racial hatred in our country. How can we win a war against the enemy outside our borders if we can’t get along within them? We don’t all have to be friends but we should be able to have mutual respect.

I’m not sure if the two are being used as models to mend a broken, systematic injustice system. In all agencies all over the world, you still have those that nurture their own perspective on what justice is. Whether it’s notion that evil lurks in a specific race and therefore, no matter their contributions to this country, they are treated as such. As well, I understand that law enforcement officers are a close nit group, why don’t they actually get out to meet and socialize with the community they actually serve. They’ll find beneficial relationships with every race within that community….just a thought

If the police harrassed a white man like me, I wouldn’t be invited to the whitehouse, bullied or not by Sergent Crowly.

Posted by: Dan Gleason | July 28, 2009, 12:16 am 12:16 am

Obama, appears to be the one acting stupidly. He is the President Of the USA, not someone that should be commiting on public Police matters. This makes him appear racist.

Posted by: ken mccracken | July 28, 2009, 12:22 am 12:22 am

IT IS INDEED CONTRIVED. IT WILL ACCOMPLISH NOTHING.
I BELIEVE THE OFFICER DESERVES AN APOLOGY FROM THE PROFESSOR FOR THE PROFESSOR’S BELIGERANT BEHAVIOR.
ALL THE OFFICER DID WAS RESPOND TO A BREAK IN WHICH THE CALLER’S TAPES NOW CLEARLY SHOW DID NOT MENTION RACE.

Posted by: STEVE | July 28, 2009, 12:23 am 12:23 am

The police dropped the charges immediately because it was a wrongful arrest – it’s really pretty straightforward.
I do think it would have been smarter for Obama to not comment on the incident. However, he was asked the question and it doesn’t seem to be his style to pass on the tough race questions.
I’d guess Obama feels a real responsibility to confront these issues as they arise. After all, he is black and white, and he is the President of the United States of America.
@Dan Gleason – He is a friend of Obama’s so odds are the invite would’ve come anyway.

Posted by: Sean | July 28, 2009, 12:23 am 12:23 am

Bushir said the 911 call did not indicate the gates was black “contrary to the police report” … duh, the taped call was not to the officer that arrived on the scene (to whom she provided additional information in person after having had time to reflect, that is his report of what she told him).
The media continues to get this story all wrong… pretty shabby reporting from the get-go, ever looking in the wrong direction. It is interesting how it was spun, all about a profiling racist cop, until they found out there was a tape recording of Gates yelling and screaming at the officers… then alphabet media started singing a different toon. Pitiful but all too typical.

Posted by: anthony cila | July 28, 2009, 12:23 am 12:23 am

The charges were dropped because a black mayor called… a black police chief called… a black president called… in defense of their black friend who are the racists?
Had a white mayor and white police chief and a white president called in support of the white cop… blacks would be rioting in the streets screaming racism… anybody want to test that theory?

Posted by: anthony cila | July 28, 2009, 12:28 am 12:28 am

So Obama thinks whenever he says stupid things about people, he doesn’t need to apologize. All he has to do is invite them to the White House and everything is okay. If i were the police, i wouldn’t go. Obama needs to apologize on T.V. Let everyone around the world hear him apologize just like he called the police stupid.

President Obamas attempt to resolve this issue over a serving of beer is an insult to me as an African American. In fact, it should be seen as an insult by anyone who has ever experienced an injustice.
To think that the first African American president elected to this nation will trivialize such a serious issue over a beer is an insult to himself and all African Americans. His actions indicate that blacks are not to be taken seriously. Just give them a beer and they are pacified. WHAT A SHAME!
President Obama would never attempt this with a prominent Jewish Scholar, gay rights activist, the head of the Special Olympics or anyone else. Nor would the public allow him to get away with such trivialization of such a serious issue. Most importantly none of these persons would stoop so low as to accept this type of negotiation.
This sort of “BREW BARGAINING” is a major set back for African Americans and for America as a nation!

Posted by: Patty in Carolina | July 28, 2009, 12:35 am 12:35 am

Will the President be having a beer with every wrongly accused racist/rogue cop or just the ones his “friends” wrongly accuse?
Are taxpayer footing the bill for beer and plane tickets (rooms, dinners and shows too)?

Posted by: anthony cila | July 28, 2009, 12:36 am 12:36 am

I don’t think this will solve anything. While many try to blame only whites as being prejudice, its obvious that blacks are prejudice too. Gates proved it. Instead of cooperating, he cried the race card, knowing that he could get away with it. The police officer should not apologize, but Gates should. And Obama should too, especially since he didnt know all the facts before calling someone stupid. The only way to start to stop racial problems is for blks. to put on their big boy panties and start acting like they don’t want to be treated different. Then most whites will feel safe in not pre judging them.

Posted by: Val | July 28, 2009, 12:41 am 12:41 am

I do not think that bringing the two together is a contrived attempt to solve a deeper problem or to solve anything for that matter. I think it is just a plain, old-fashioned, stupid idea and a waste of a president’s valuable time. Since Obama wrongfully got involved in this matter, he is now trying to save face with this stupid beer idea.
I want him working on a single-payer, nationalized, universal pension system and a single-payer, nationalized, universal health-care system. That is what I voted him into office to do. Because he is failing at that, he meddles in everything else to try and impress people. I am not impressed and I am not fooled. He is failing to do what he was elected to do. He needs to stop wasting his time on stupid other things.

Obama is going to lose a lot of white voters next term. I’m disappointed

Posted by: what | July 28, 2009, 12:57 am 12:57 am

To imply that this meeting is contrived is an understatement. Im sure the police rank and file did not suggest or cause the disorderly conduct charge to be dropped. A radical, foul-mouthed elitist happens to be a friend of this president and that’ weight’ factored into the charge being dropped. The only respect I had for Obama came with the office he was elected to. For him not to apologize, not only to the police officer he belittled but to the electorate he represents, is a travesty and is indicative of his underlying prejudice. To preface what he said about the police”…acting stupidly” by saying he did not know all the facts aptly fits the definition of ‘prejudice’.
Not only is he guilty of being prejudiced, he also is not man enough to apologize for the very statement he made. Having a beer with Sgt. Crowley
and Mr. Gates and not apologizing to the Sergeant and his department is only going to exacerbate an ever widening chasm between the black and white races. At a time when the races should be ‘greying’, Obama further defined the differences of color by opening his mouth in this incident and that, unfortunately will most likely set back race relations for some time to come.

Posted by: willow | July 28, 2009, 1:09 am 1:09 am

Quoting from the actual report of the officer that arrived on the scene, “…she went on to tell me that she observed what appeared to be two black males…” While that is not what she told 911 (she did say she wasn’t sure when pressed for an id, even offering that one may have been hispanic looking, that is on the tape… but apparently, while speaking with the other elderly woman than prompted her to call he recollection was more accurate and she shared that with the officer… or he’s lying and Gates never raised his voice in anger, yeah, let’s find something to blame the cop with to make this a wash instead of the embarassment Gates is to all of us.

Posted by: anthony cila | July 28, 2009, 1:17 am 1:17 am

The comments of “what” and “willow” above are right on target.
If Obama is going to spend any more time on this issue, it should be only to publicly apologize to the American people for his bigoted, racist-pig comments.
As “what” said, there are not likely to be many non-black voters who want to vote him in for a second term. The mass exodus of his supporters is happening fast.

I hope the humanity of the participants outshines all preconceived conspiracy theories. Let thie be a teachable moment that imbues civility within all of us in the U.S.!

Let’s Truly Keep It Real…Beer and Race with a Cop and Blk Man at the Wht Hse won’t be a Giant Leap For Mankind. Bless Obama’s heart but this war within almost every American of race will not go away. There are plenty of race examples out there; some have made a difference and Most haven’t. People on both sides are going to still have their inner thoughts of race regardless…this is still America (not euphoria). Someday ppl will get it right.

Posted by: ONE | July 28, 2009, 3:13 am 3:13 am

I think that Obama got himself in hot water stepping into something he thought he could just PULL the
RACE CARD on and win over America.
Some things sould be left to the PRO’S!
Who really cares if the 911 caller said anything about the word Black.
Put yourself in there (COPS) shoes an intruder is an intruder. Quit trying to push the CARD!!!!!!!!!! I don’t think that Whites can have a WHITE ENETERTAINMENT CHANEL ON TV THAT WOULD NOT FLY WOULD IT.
If you want to push something look at the messed up health care plan that Obama is trying to PUSH dowm everyones PIPE. Just because this story is taking away the attention. THIS IS AMERICA EVERYONE GET ALONG?????

ANTHONY PERFECT SAYING

Posted by: Stone | July 28, 2009, 3:24 am 3:24 am

Obama. bless his heart, made a big mistake here. This cop was out to protect a citizen of unknown race from a potential break-in by another of unknown race. When the gentleman in the house, legally or illegally, refused to cooperate, the cop did the right thing. Anyone would want the same thing, regardless of race. This brilliant prof went bozo and began his tirade (after great treatment in China perhaps?). Obama, blew it in his analyis. BTW, the beer invite was from the cop, but the original invite should have come from Gates on that day as a token of his appreciation for a very fast response! Race is an issue in many cases, but this is one of reverse racial profiling by too many in the hierarchy.

Posted by: mad dog | July 28, 2009, 3:42 am 3:42 am

It is unfortunate that small incidents like these can ruin President Obama’s reputation. However, I can’t help but question the form of redemption. If a deeper problem exists, then his solution is informal at the least. I wonder, if beers solve racial issues, do pot parties solve class issues?

Posted by: Matt Vela | July 28, 2009, 3:54 am 3:54 am

There is little doubt that Mr Gates was quite disrespectful to Sgt Crowley, but why does a police officer need to respond to disrespect by arresting the person. Walking away would have been the smart and civilized response. Walking away would have provided a good model to those people who still think that arguments can only be resolved with physical force.

Posted by: observer | July 28, 2009, 4:02 am 4:02 am

I think we’re all hoping this silly story (the one including the president, not the incident between Gates and Crowley) comes to an end as a subject of media fascination with this meeting.
Just another way to slam Obama for agitated conservatives and the anti-Obama press…

Posted by: matt | July 28, 2009, 7:52 am 7:52 am

Obama was right in calling the arrest, stupid. How many arrests has this officer made that did not result in prosecutions or convictions? Did he act in the way he teaches in his classes? I do not believe that one should be arrested for yelling at the police. Of course in the real world, one must, “yes sir, no sir” or out comes the handcuffs. In my opinion this was a case of power. The officer had the power to show this guy who was boss.
I would not have responded as Gates did,but I am not a black man. I wish Obama had not gotten into it. Who’s paying for these two to come to the White House? Who’s paying for their expenses? As usual, the media does not discuss money.

Posted by: cregis | July 28, 2009, 9:03 am 9:03 am

I think the beer idea is cool.

Posted by: Bill in NC | July 28, 2009, 9:16 am 9:16 am

A very close black friend saved my life in Vietnam. I would give him anything, but I don’t think I would lie for him. I hope the President is big enough to take his words back and apologize to the police. It is clear already that voters did not put the kind of man in the WH that they thought they had ellected.

Posted by: James L. | July 28, 2009, 9:34 am 9:34 am

I just shook my head when I heard about Obama’s beer party to resolve this issue! This guy is so much about ego and celebrity it isn’t even funny. Bush would have been eaten alive by the media and the Saturday Night Live set over this and Obama and his groupies call it a “teachable moment”. Face it, Obama stepped in it big time; he is the typical politician attempting to spin it into something wonderful. Obama is darn lucky that he gets to play by a different set of rules and that those rules are so lenient for him. I just pray to God that people are smart enough to figure it out; color aside, he has no business being in the White House.

Obama has made the White House so folksy
THERE IS NOT MUCH DIGNITY LEFT IN IT.

Very Classy! Inviting someone to the White House for a “Beer” You’d think he would offer him a “Cocktail”

Posted by: Pat | July 28, 2009, 8:11 pm 8:11 pm

The President’s invitation goes a long way towards reversing the negative feelings and press. Smart move. Get over it.

Our prisons are exploding at the seams. Why? One day, one good ole boy, said to another good ole boy, “Let’s just go have one beer.” Nuff said. I think the whole country has missed the most important point in all this nonsense. Only families devastated by the horrible consequences of alcohol addiction will relate. It is offensive to say the least. PG

I guess being a black man in the united states automatically gives you the right to be rude and uncooperative with the police today. Gates was automatically uncooperative with the police and caused a lot of unnecessary trouble. All he had to do was show his ID showing he lived there and the police would have offered help and or left. This is a classic case where blacks escalate routine police calls. The only racist in this situation was the well educated professor who attacked and berated the police officer on the scene and who were only doing their job. That job was to make sure a house was not being burglarized. How could gates or any educated individual believe they have the right to berate and belittle any individual.

Posted by: chuck | July 30, 2009, 2:41 am 2:41 am

I DON’T THINK OUR PRESIDENT SHOULD HAVE ANY KIND OF BEER TO SMOOTH THE TENSION. “SHAME ON YOU NIGHTLINE”. IF BUSH WAS STILL IN THE WHITEHOUSE, THERE WOULDN’T BE ANY BEER OR STORY. AT LEAST OUR NEW PRESIDENT IS BIG ENOUGH TO MAKE PEACE NOT WAR, UNLIKE OUR LAST PRESIDENT, THAT NEVER APOLOGIZE FOR ANYTHING. BECAUSE OUR PRESIDENT IS BROWN, WHITE PEOPLE WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND WHAT IT’S LIKE BEING BROWN.
I USE THE THE COLOR BROWN BECAUSE BLACK IS THE COLOR OF TAR NOT THE COLOR OF A HUMAN.

Posted by: Maria | July 30, 2009, 3:20 am 3:20 am

The 911 caller was correct in calling – she did or said nothing wrong or racist.
She was doing what any good neighbor would do. Gates is blowing this way out of perportion – who is the racist here ? And the cop was doing his job.
Why / how does the President of the Untied States get pulled into something so minor?? Doesn’t he have bigger issues to deal with. Solving a problem
over beer typically does not solve anything. Another waste of taxpayers money.

Will all the flack about the choice of brews…I am surprised the President isn’t serving a true American original:
