Closing Arguments: Obama’s Dwindling Approval

As President Barack Obama tries to sell his health care proposal, he does so with dwindling support among Americans.  An ABC News-Washington Post poll released today shows that just 49 percent approve of how he's handling health care, down from a high of 57 percent. And while he remains personally popular, his overall job approval has sunk by a 10 points — from a high of 69 percent to 59 percent. The nation's struggling economy isn't helping. Earlier this year, Obama had an approval rating of 72 percent on his economic plan. That is down 16 points to 56 percent.  So tonight we ask you: How much confidence do you have in the President? Tell us what you think. You can follow "Nightline" anytime on Twitter: http://twitter.com/Nightline.

I have zero confidence.

It’s not a matter of confidence, we knew it would be hard and difficult, he’s just the face anyway. The real power running this country won’t move that easily. What is likable about Obama from the beginning and still is, he cares, his efforts in wanting to do something good for the American people, not how much he gets done or how fast. We know his every effort will be challenged by those that don’t truly care about the people, only themselves and their legacies. Do what you can Obama, ignore the “polls”

I still have faith in him. For crying out loud he just became President in January in an already declining economy. At least let him get through half a term before we lose faith.

Pres. Obama needs to listen to Dave Ramsey…YOU CAN’T BORROW YOUR WAY OUT OF DEBT!!!!!!!!!

I still have tremendous confidence in President Obama. It’s the House and Senate that I worry about. If they would just work for us instead of themselves, maybe we’d get health care reform.

No faith, I have lost it all. Maybe, the descendants of Will Durant will write about the fall of the American Empire.

I have no confidenct. He is running this country into the ground and his bailouts are not really helping the middle class people who live from paycheck to paycheck. His health plan is going to be a nightmare.

Personally, I like the guy. However, I have no confdence in his policies. He and Congress are spending us toward hyperinflation and a collapse of the U.S. dollar.
Also his naivete about foreign issues and his excessive reliance on his personal charm are also alarming. He almost “gave away the store” on his recent Russia visit.
Medical insurance reform? So far, he and Congress are doing nothing to effectively restain costs in any of the current medical reform proposals. The current situation is that Medicare alone may well bankrupt the USA in 15 years. Congress is not willing to address that looming crisis, yet they are rushing to spend even more? Obama is not showing any realistic effective leadership in this area.

If anyone can pull this off, it is Obama. We are already paying for healthcare for those who can’t through hospital policies that charge $10 an aspirin to make up for people who can’t pay.

I have no confidence in Barack Hussein Obama. If you think the problems Government creates are bad, wait till you see their solutions. Hmm… I wonder why Obama is having the dropping in poll numbers and such. Maybe it is because America does not want socialism! Maybe is is because we Americans are standing up for our rights and the freedom that our forefathers and ancestors fought and died for. We are Taxed Enough Already!

I have total confidence in President Obama. Give the man a chance. If you do not get a handle on health care we will continue to pay for the uninsured. Have you been to an emergency room lately? Pure hell. You can die waiting to see a doctor. I’ll take any kind of health care over that.

We have complete confidence in President Obama and the Democratic Congressional leadership. After 8 years of failed Bush/Cheney policies change will not happen overnight. Give the President some time to reform the disfuntional aftermath of Bush/Cheney et al.

If you really wanted to stimulate the economy all he had to do is suspend our pay role tax, youknow that little line item on your check that says FICA.
But he would rather create more government agencies and bureaucracies.
It’s not about helping us, it’s about controlling us & our money.
Sorry I don’t need that kind of help!

Everyone is looking for a quick fix!! Too bad no one has a answer to Health Care, The Economy, & Taxes! Not even Bush stepped up to the plate before the end of his term as Pres. Like Obama has told us all…we were in this mess before he even came into office. Obama made it clear Americans that things would get BAD, before it got better! NOONE was listening!! There is no quick fix to a Recession. Obama keep climbing that mountain and you will make it to the Top!!! I pray God be with you and blesses you in every decission that is made! God be with you and your Family!

I have faith in Obama. With all the crap he has got to clean up after Bush/Cheney/Enron/Haliburton/etc bankrupted the country, Obama is doing an excellent job. He needs to get the public Health Option passed so everyone can afford Healthcare.

Posted by: Chet | July 21, 2009, 12:36 am 12:36 am

I never had confidence in him; the extreme far left individulas that he hung with are representatitve of the anti-American/socilaist ideas that he admires and is committed to. He is very good with words, like a used car salesman, but I never expected Congress to agree with his extreme ideas to the extent that they have. Just as prople voted for Democrats because they didn’t like Bush, they will probably against Democrats by voting for another party in the next elections.

Posted by: Davel | July 21, 2009, 12:39 am 12:39 am

We need to give Barack Obama time to try and fix the problems Bush/Cheney left this country. We went from a 5 trillion dollar deficit to 11 trillion deficit in eight years under Bush/Cheny. They ignored all the problems this country has been facing. Look at what former Treasury Secretary Paul O’Neil said, along with Former Press Secretary,Scot McClellan said about the Bush/Cheny administration.

Are negative numbers allowed in this confidence poll? Certainly less than zero! Read “Liberty and Tyranny” by Mark Levin – which should clear up any questions about who Obama is and what he is trying to do to our country. Just say Nobama…

I think he’s doing as well as could be expected. For anything positive to happen, lots of people are going to have to rethink whats important. The status quo is a bleak prospect to most people. Change is usually painful.

I don’t have confidence in Obama.I don’t think he is listening to the middle class people at all, with all the bailouts given what has it done for the economy? If even part of the money was given to the AMERICAN PEOPLE that was used to bailout the banks and insurance companies we would be much better off. The government would have recieved taxes from the money. The AMERICAN PEOPLE could have kept the economy going by buying new houses, cars, boats, vacations, ect. Instead of the banks getting all kinds of money and PEOPLE don’t have any extra money to even get a loan let alone to keep up with a house payment a car payment and then if you are lucky to have enough to buy groceries and pay the rest of your bills. I really think our Congress Men and Congress Women need to get back into the real world and not the world of Washington D.C. To try a pass the health reform will put us much further in debt, which is already way too much.I
think passing this would be a bad
decision.

Flagging or maybe no confidence at all… I think that the people have begun to see through the “showmanship and shining facade” that Obama and his Chicago-Clinton cabinet have worked so hard to present. The constant downward spiral of numbers for his approval rating can only be blamed on the ludicrous policies being carried out by Congress and his own administration. The faux-pas committed by the clowns in his cabinet and others he has nominated to strategic administrative positions are enough to make one believe the future the Obama administration is creating looks gloomy indeed… Since January, the economy has lost almost 2.5 million jobs, including 532,000 last month alone…with no end in sight
Luckily, we have not hit Jimmy Carter’s 11 percent unemployment or his 13.5 inflation rate, but with a 2 trillion dollar deficit projection for this year alone…FOUR TIMES more than we have ever borrowed before… we’re not far away!!!! Instead of facing these economic realities, Obama and Congress have developed a binge-spending plan that is totally contrary to any economic model.
The recession we should be working to overcome shows every sign of becoming deeper and longer. It seems that the reason for this is that the glue of Government’s tentacles are gumming up the works!!! To quote Dr. Phil, “How”s all this working out for you?” My Answer and the response of millions of Americans according to the poll numbers is…. NOT VERY WELL, ACTUALLY !!!

Obama and his socialist heath care plan rates a big fat ZERO with me!! Obama’s inexperience and the scary details of his liberal socialist agenda are leaking out to the general public a little more each day despite his love affair with the MSM liberal media and their best efforts to keep it all under wraps. If Obama backed up by Pelosi and the out of control Dems in congress, are allowed to continue on this course with reckless abandon and out of control spending, they will break our country. Obama has gone after something now that affects EVERY American, their healthcare, well being and their quality of life. When people of all ages, especially our seniors begin to see and fear what will happen to their healthcare under socialized medicine, Obama does and will feel the backlash. No matter what party you are from, no matter who you voted for and how much you may like or dislike Obama the man, your own health and that of your loved ones comes first. Policy becomes all to real when you think of your loved ones and what socialized medicine such as Canadians suffer under and run across the border to the US to escape from, hits home. For example, my 96 yr old grandmother lives alone in her own home in amazingly good health. Last year she fell and broke her hip and the only way to repair it was to replace it. Under her current health care plan that option was available to her and she is back to good health again, walking again on her own and back living in her own home. Under Obamacare my grandmother would have been denied this hip replacement and either be dead now or living in a nursing home simply because of a number, her AGE of 96. No one would have looked at her unique situation and realized as she and her young doctor did that a hip replacement to repair her broken hip would actually save her health provider money. This hip replacement allowed her to return to her own home instead of lying in a nursing home left to die with a broken hip under Obamacare socialized medicine. She is but ONE example of the poor choices Obamacare would offer to unique individuals such as her who now are looked at case by case between a patient and his or her own doctor. Obama has already called for a team of 15 so called “medical experts” to make these types of decisions, who will or will not be given necessary care and procedures under Obamacare medical rationing. When you look at the DMV, the USPS, the IRS, Social Security Administration and other government beauracracies, why in God’s name would you want to put you and your loved ones lives in their hands???? The Democrats in Congress don’t want this for themselves, they have been asked to sign a paper saying they will switch from their golden Government health care plans to this new Obamacare they are trying to push on all of us and ALL have refused to sign to switch. If it is good enough for us and they sign and pass this, then it should be good enough for them! Then and only then might we get something worth switching to.

While I think Obama is abmitious and is doing his best I don’t think the realized the amount of opposition and “hem and hawing” that he would get from Congress. Everything he tries to do gets shut down or molested. The final stimoulous package the passed wasn’t what he originally intended it to be but his version wouldn’t have passed. Everyone else had to put their hands in it first. I believe that if Congress would get out of the way and let the man work he could actually get something done. While some of Obama’s plans and ideas are a little naive in many cases there are no really good options available. I also think he’s doing a better job than McCain would have done. Bottomline I feel confident that Obama is working his hardest to get us out of the war, to turn around the economic and increase job opportunities. There’s just no quick fix for any of this and no one can fix everything.

Obama has only put the economy in worse condition than it was before. As if Medicare Part D wasn’t straining the economy enough, now we ALL need healthcare weather we are actually citizens or illegal aliens in this country. How did our parents and grandparents make it in this country before we were all given healthcare (at the expense of much higher taxes to come)? I do not have healthcare and neither does my boyfriend. If we wanted that badly, we would pay for it, but we choose not to because we don’t want to be more strapped for cash than we are now. Giving it to ALL will only insure we pay for it ALL whether we want to or not. Now if I did actually pay for my healthcare it would only be compromised because all doctors offices & hospitals will be overflowing beyond measure.
Our President is only concerned about being on TV everyday and being popular all while taking over large portions of the auto, housing, financial and now healthcare industry. He promised a million+ jobs minimum with his stimulus plan and our unemployment rate is skyrocketing while he has only used 5% of that “oh so needed money they just had to have”!
Oh and let’s not forget closing Gitmo. There’s another half baked idea when he doesn’t even know where he is going to put KNOWN convicted TERRORISTS! Cause God forbid we send them back to their countries of origin where they will immediately be executed upon their return. Why is this our problem? Why don’t we care about our own brothers & sisters of this country that died at the hands of these men? And why is Nancy Polosi still in office when she lied about being informed about waterboarding when she was pretending to be appalled and outraged over it? The CIA proved it! Do we believe Nancy Polosi over the CIA? Come on Obama lovers…wake up! Smell the coffee now or we will all be drinking the same exact cup of bland coffee whether we like it or not by the time he gets done with his need to make everyone “Same,Same”. No richer or better off than anyone else. Everyone “Same,Same”. Is this the land of opportunity or the land of “Everybody gets the exact same thing til everyone is equal to each other.”

Obama has a different agenda than helping the Americans and defending America and the U.S. Constitution. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that plunging our country into trillions of dollars into debt does not help our nation. Our founding fathers abhored the abusive power of government. Someone has to pay for the proposed universl health care. Who and how? It doesn’t work in Massachusetts, so how will it work nationwide. Listen to FOX News to find out what is really going on.

I have continued and unfaltering confidence and faith in President Obama that he can and will do the job we elected him to do, and do it well. He has only been in office a short time and inherited quite the mess. He truly cares about the people and the R’s total lack of respect and support in anything he stands for just is more of the same old stuff we had when GW was in charge. The R’s need to get their act together if they ever want to regain even a tiny portion of what they used to stand for, which wasn’t fear and hate mongering and bitter divisiveness that is currently displayed.

I wonder how other Presidents were doing 6 months into a depression? Oh, the last time we had a depression was 1932 – The First Republican Dystopia.
We are now in the second Republican Dystopia caused by the Deregulation Disaster. Just about anybody I talk to recognizes the Republicans pulled off a major catastrophe with this Deregulation Disaster coupled with the over-inflated housing market (thanks to inflationary money policies meant to oscure the loss of real income by average people over the last 2 decades.
MOst people realize it’s way too soon to be expecting a change in the economy in only 6 months. Despite all the M$M talking heads constantly parroting the mantra: “Why hasn’t Obama fixed the economy yet?”, “The stimulus is NOT WORKING”. The people know it’s way too early to expect to see much results. The real proof that Obama’s and the Democrats efforts are working is that we are not in The Great Depression II – where we would have been talking about 20% unemployment instead of 10%. The Obama plan IS working in that things would be much worse without it. The Deregulation Disaster coupled with the loss of real income for the greatest portion of our society (not of course the top 5%- thank you GOP) combined with an over-inflated housing bubble has wrought extraordinary damage to the economy which will take many months to start to make real progress (such as declining unemployment.
By the way, speaking of polls, How’s M$M doing on the question of “How much do you trust the M$M to tell you what’s really going on>?”, HUHHHHHHHH????

Posted by: John Walker | July 21, 2009, 9:48 am 9:48 am

Obama’s doing very well. It’s the Republicans and Blue Dog Democrats that need to shut up and sit down.
Ten years ago I was a Republican. Now I would vote for Vladimir Lenin himself if he promised to increase the top marginal income tax rate to 94% like it was when FDR was president.
If there is anything wrong with Obama it’s that he’s been too reluctant to use the extraordinary powers congress gave the president after 9/11/01. There’s a hell of a lot of Republicans and bankers who need to be extraordinarily renditioned to other jurisdictions.

If the MSM and all of you stop to consider the amount of the messe that the Bush administration left to be cleaned up, maybe you will see President Obama more kindly.
I have never seen a president inaugurated only six months ago who is being so assailed because he has no magic wand to wave to make the mill tails of Hell, which were handed to him, disappear.
Obama is pushing for health care reform but he is fighting the Republicans, the lobbyists and even members of his own party. It is not an issue he can deal with alone. Most of the members in congress are about as friendly as North Korea. Be glad they are not making their own nukes!.
They only care about the corporations that made donations to their election. So please all of you, cry me a freaking river.
The good thing about all of this is that NOT ALL OF US are falling for the stupid trap that we forgot how everything was when he took office.
We have not forgotten and we know who the main responsibles are.
Thank you.

Confidence in Mr. Obama: zero.
He has no interest in what’s best for this country, he just has an agenda to promote. We are not a European nation, we are a nation of idividuals. People choose to immigrate to the US because we have RIGHTS, FREEDOMS and are allowed to keep most of what we earn. Take that away and we’ll have nothing going for us.
Cap and trade? VAT? Nationalized auto industry? Then there’s the question of health care; the government can’t even properly care for our veterans, how could they possibly do right by the rest of us?
I agree with other posters; we can’t dig our way out through more debt and taxes.
Mr. Obama, keep your hands off of my rights and my money. I’ll choose my own health care, thank you, and decide how best to spend what’s left.

Oh for goodness sakes! Those poll numbers just prove that the American public really has become an “instant” society. It seems to me that no one has the ability to practice patience anymore. Nothing in the government can be accomplished over night. The President has only been in office since the end of January! He has my full confidence and with a little cooperation from the House and Senate and the American people will bring us out of our current difficulties.

We are the country where illness can lead to bankruptcy–why aren’t conservatives appalled at the idea of hardworking Americans losing homes, businesses and lives because they inconveniently decided to get sick? We all pay now for the health care mess, it just isn’t obvious; to understand this you have to think logically instead of thinking emotionally. Health care for all should be an essential service like firefighters, police protection and education–it is the only humane and sane choice. I have great faith in Obama, but I believe he was destined for disapproval and criticism because he inherited a country in shambles. Bush was the first to give bailouts to the banks, remember? His misguided foreign policies drove our country in the ditch both diplomatically and financially before Obama stepped in– Obama’s critics seem to have short term memory loss. At the end of the Bush term interest rates were at 0% and things were still crashing, Obama had to try a different economic formula. I continue to have confidence in him and I am proud he is our leader. We are all so used to worshiping easy money through stock bubbles, tech bubbles, housing bubbles, and reality finally caught up to us. We will not fix these things in an instant; calm down and be patient. And could we all please start thinking more about America as WE instead of ME ME ME all the time? I am ashamed of how we seem to hate each other and name call like spoiled children.

Truth is every President faces the same challenges in some form or fashion. Every President means well and all want to do try as well. But realistically they hit the same wall. When you have a bunch of Politicians who only care about their own pocket books and giving themselves raises you will never see change. Then you have the media to contend with as well. They choose the best topic to exploit any individual to tarnish their efforts. Until we have people in office and a Media that will work for the betterment of the “American People” this will never change!

You can’t tax a country into prosperity. All He is doing is hurting the middle class. He thinks that by taxing the rich and businesses even more than what they are already taxed will save the economy. Many businesses don’t have a very large profit margin, and by adding more taxes (healthcare) will only put them out of business. Giving tax breaks might give people the confidence to spend money, same with businesses. Again, you can’t tax a country into prosperity.

How quickly people forget that the Bush administration left this country in the worst shape it’s been in for decades and left all of it for the new President to “fix”. Imagine what would be going on now had McCain won…. nothing. The guy never had a plan for anything.
Put yourself in Obama’s shoes and then think about all the criticism those of you who are being negative have for the job he’s done in SIX MONTHS! I defy anyone…ANYONE…to step up and do it better.
The man needs support, encouragement and time. These messes are not going to be fixed overnight and I can’t understand why anyone would expect that they could be!

I have tremendous confidence in President Obama. He’s smart, his heart is in the right place, and he’s modeling pragmatism and respect for all people. He may be modeling what my friend Bob Fuller calls “dignitarianism” at the expense of pushing through an agenda that I think the country needs and that I personally would like to see enacted (single-payer healthcare, for starters), but perhaps this will yield more long-term good for this country and the world than pushing through any one agenda item. Hard to say; it’s a gamble. That said, I’m still delighted to have our country in the hands of someone this smart, this articulate, with the vigor and energy of relative youthfulness, who cares so deeply about the future of ALL Americans!

I have no confidence in this con man. He’s a real smooth talker who continuously blames this all on Bush. Bush did not put us in a trillion dollar deficit in 6 months like the almighty God Obama did. And he’s not finished yet. All he knows is how to dictate what he wants and how to spend our money. He is spending us into 3rd world country status.
The once great USA is no more.
We don’t need a socialist health care system but of course that goes along with the socialist country he is creating. And how in the world is he going to pay for this health care system. Seniors beware. Your health care is going to be decimated. According to Obama, you cost us too much money for your health care and he needs the money to pay for health care for the illegals who will be covered by his plan.
Go Help Us!!!!!

I have full confidence in our wonderful President.
I don’t have confidence with the media and the right wingdings who always make up negative stories and statistics on just about everything Mr. Obama does, even insignificant matters. Notice how they play the game when something as simple as a 1 or 5 point drop in a poll. This becomes front page headline news taking up half the newspaper and endless chatter on the tubes. Yet, when Mr. Obama is above average in a poll, we hear nothing!

Posted by: Trixie | July 22, 2009, 12:19 am 12:19 am

Unfortunatly, President Obama made a couple of grave mistakes in his first week in office by spending over 1 trillion dollars in bailouts that the average citizen can not benefit from. While I agree that our health care system needs an overhaul, I do not think that spending money we do not have is the solution. Let’s work at regulating excessive charges by drug companies who are reaping record profits. I think that President Obama has good intentions, but I do not think that he has the experience to provide us with the leadership we so desperately need. At this point, China and Japan are financing a huge portion of our deficit, which is worrysome. As in real life, the only way to improve your finances is to live within your means.

I woud like to know how many of those who condemn Obama’s economic polcies and plans were as critical of Bush’s lack of national ecomomic policies, Failure to monitor Wall Street, and reckless spending (on a war that we should not be in) that has gotten us in this economic hell-hole in the first place. Obama has inherited Bush’s mess to clean-up. Offer viable suggestions, not criticism Yes, I trust Obama whole-heartedly.

I think we expect too much too fast from our president. He has inhereted a mess. He did not create it. Some things take a time to fix. And as with all other presidents before him, they as well as Obama faced opposition. We all know that there are those that want him to fail for many different reasons. I think he is doing a great job. He is taken on more than any other president in my lifetime (53 years). I feel the American people should be patient and our lawmakers should try to work together for the good of the people.

I see the insurance company’s fearmongering has gotten to you, Rachel. As an American living in Canada now, I can assure you I can go to any doctor I choose,, show them my plastic health card, and have any procedure I need, without concerning myself with “cost”. Emergency rooms are never crowded..no need. Yes, waitng time for some treatments had been an issue for a time, but is much improved now.
I can assure you Canadians are very satisfied with their health care system, and are grateful their health needs are not dependent upon their ability to pay for them.
And Rachel, Canada does not have a Socialist gov’t.

I have absolutely no confidence whatsover in Obama. I voted for this turkey. His presidency has been a disastrous waste of time and taxpayer money from Day 1 with his totally unnecessary and lavish inaugural circus. He is clearly not qualified for the job. He does not understand health care, economics, energy, technology, or anything else. He does not realize how bad us common people have been hurt by the failed government of the past 40 years and how dire our situation is now. Get him out there now and give someone else a chance. The country cannot afford to let this failing presidency happen for another 3.5 years.

As a senior citizen, I like the energy that our new President has been expending to try to turn bush’s MESS into a clear message for our democracy: Everyone have much to do to help him. He did not create such a mess at all. The debt & mess that Wall Street has gotten us in has been accumulating over the past eight years of the Bush regime, which is especially obvious to all of those who are unemployed. The Republicans only play politics. They do not have the heart of our democracy in their interests – only the goal of reclaiming power for their own selfish interest – especially big business. The President has been working overtime since he entered office to surround himself with experts in every field to chart with great care & foresight the best course for our great nation. It’s easy to throw stones; it’s much harder to get your hands busy & help outespecially with all those who are suffering from lack of jobs & healthcare right now.

The man has only been in office for seven months!
Can he and his administration fix a country that was broken long before they entered office? They can do it if God and we help them do it!

I don’t have any confidence in him. He trys to portray confidence himself but I see right through it. If we need to reform healthcare. Lets take time out and do it properly what is his rush ?? If we get it wrong we will be traveling down a bad road. Its his EGO that is the problem!!!

Seems obama is digging a bigger hole then he had when he first got in to office. I think he’s a joke that will finish what bush started. Breaking the middle class american. His liberal, minority views will doom america.

I continue to have total confidence in Obama. He is on the right track. I don’t understand how people can think everything will be resolved overnight. I think some people don’t understand how seriously the Bush administration damaged our economy, our foreign relations, everything. Obama and anyone else trying to bring about real change will be seriously challenged by the entrenched vested interests like the insurance companies who have a stranglehold on Congress and many state legislatures. They are experts at distorting facts and blaming everyone else for their mismanagement – and covering up their greed. Ditto the other major power players. Real change means the big money interests will lose some of their money and they will do anything to prevent that. AND they are perfectly positioned to do it. Only we can stop them.

I still have confidence in our President. Change is not easy and it doesn’t happen overnight. Barak Obama has been President for only 7 months. He is a brillant man and he has surrounded himself with some of the brightest and smartest people in the country to serve as his advisors.

I have confidence that President Obama will do and is doing what he believes is in the best interests of us citizens of this great United States. Lets not forget who got us into all of this mess to begin with, stop all of the hate-mongering, and do what needs to be done. It is past time that our government put on it’s big boy britches and stop letting the rich run our country for their own benefit at the cost of the majority of the citizens.
DOES ANYONE REALIZE THAT THE GOVERNMENT ALREADY HAS A HEALTHCARE OPTION FOR CHILDREN AND SENIORS, CALLED MEDICARE AND MEDICAID? I don’t hear people talking badly about how awefully ran those programs are. After all, those programs take care of people WHO NEED IT.
There is nothing wrong in my book with President Obama stepping up to the plate and hitting a home run for all of us who are slaves to private insurance. In fact, I think he deserves a standing ovation.

I never had confidence in him. I am from the south, and I have seen alot of smooth talking black preachers. I hope our Constitution can survive.
