LA Asks for Donations to Help with Costs of Jackson Memorial

Our affiliate KABC is reporting that some major LA freeways have been closed.  The Jackson convoy (minivans, limo buses, Range Rovers, even two ambulances) has departed the family home en route to a private service and then onto the massive memorial at the Staples Center.

It will be a costly day for Los Angeles.  A councilman last night said the estimate was the Jackson memorial will end up costing the city $3.8 million.

How to pay for it?  Money will surely be made from the influx of tourists, but the city is asking for donations.  On the mayor's twitter account a message has gone out inviting people to mail in a check or even give online via paypall.

What a spectacle. I hope in death I am not a burden on society.

Why should the public pay for it? If the Jackson family wants this public specticle, let them pay for it. Not everyone thinks we should have all of this shouved down our throats. His music may have been great to many, but he was a drug addict, accused child molestor and down right strange individual. I still can’t believe Congress took time out of their day to have a “moment of silence” to honor this person, when they could have been spending the time honoring a war hero that died within the same week and his death went almost unmentioned. It makes you wonder where peoples priorities are. It’s too bad that ABC feels this is such an important issue that it has to interupt all of its programming to bring us this fiasco. I for one will be watching a movie or taking a nap.
If the public feels so inclined to spend money, what about sending it to one of the many homeless shelters in the country or to the California State Government, which is almost bankrupt.
Again, let the Jackson family pay for their own circus.

This is Insane ! in this economic time with all of the homeless people we can not care for, and people are going to spend 3.8 million on a memorial. Only in America

How is LA so bankrupt that it has to beg for money?

Posted by: Vi | July 7, 2009, 12:15 pm 12:15 pm

Bravo to the comments posted. Why should we pay for the funeral and police support for a bankrupt, drug abuser who didn’t know if he wanted to be a man or a woman and child molester! Let his family pay for this big mess. Where were they the entire time he was abusing drugs? Yes, he was a great entertainer, but had more problems that drew attention to him. Shame on ABC, NBC and CBS and all the major networks for making a specticle of this situation. Where are the priorities of the American people? How do you admire a person who was so emotionally sick in the head? Let us have a normal day once again without the Jackson hoopla!

Posted by: CC | July 7, 2009, 12:18 pm 12:18 pm

Require the Jackson’s to pay for it. Their just going to fight over everything the child molester had anyway. America, especially the news medias, should be ashamed for glorifying this spectical.

RIP, Michael Jackson.
LA’s mayor must have been too busy having affairs with all of the pretty newscasters around town to have the foresight to make sure the funeral didn’t lead to financial problems. A mayor with any intelligence would have suggested a small charge to attend the service, to pay for city costs with all extra proceeds going to charity.

Whoever pays for a memorial for Michael Jackson is a sucker. Paying for a suspected pedophile, drug abuser and possible should be mental patient? I hope that we Canadians wouldn’t be so silly as to even consider it. *shakes head*

Posted by: Gail Cooke | July 7, 2009, 12:27 pm 12:27 pm

Jackson was declared not guilty of all charges.

Posted by: Annie | July 7, 2009, 12:29 pm 12:29 pm

Guilty or not – it doesn’t matter now.
However, the broke state of California should not have to pay for his memorial.
If the Jackson family wants this, then pay for it.
If California was rolling in the dough, it would be different, but they’re not.
I know. The people who love Michael should pay for it. Put your money where your mouth is and stop insisting that all of the people in California pay for your grief.

I just want 2 say this 2 everyone who have something negative 2 say about Michael Jackson, Fa one stop judging him he was very awesome 2 me and my family and we are really gone 2 miss him and his music. He did not molest any children becuz his life was about helping children and 2 have a good future. So Y dont all of you step yur game up and get money like Michael I bet you can’t. and mind your own dam business.

Jackson was not guilty cause he paid the family 20 million. The jackson family is millionaires why not ask them to pay for it. It only makes sense since it is for their funeral. Smoke and Mirrors, everyone should be worried about the American Clean Energy and Security Act. Instead of this funeral

Posted by: some_guy12345 | July 7, 2009, 12:51 pm 12:51 pm

First of all this is what you ‘Hollywood’ people get for voting for a bad actor, who still cannot speak clear English, for a Governor…that’s why LA is broke. Don’t be a racist hater…LA should be happy they are making A LOT of money this past week and a half from the sudden flood of tourism due to MJ’s unfortunate death. People should learn to stop judging others because when someone does it to you, it may not you will have no mercy or grace.

Posted by: Pammy | July 7, 2009, 12:58 pm 12:58 pm

You’ve got to be kidding! I do not live in LA, but this spectacular is a National and International embarrassing circus.

You must be joking! WE pay for a memorial for someone who had more money than God and blew it!! PLEEEEAZE!! Absolutely NOT! I could give a flying flip and a squirt that this perv is gone…and quite frankly, I’m pissed AMC too a hit for it (as usual). Charlie Gibson is just RUNNING HIS MOUTH waisting time!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Once you cross over, then God does the judging.
I’m thinking about dollars and cents now. It’s not most people’s concern what MJ did or didn’t do.
However, now it comes down to money.
Either the Jackson family pays for it or his fans should pay. Bottom line.
Whatever way CA became broke, the fact still remains: CA is busted.

I truly believe all those artists in the music industry who have benefitted from the blessed road Micheal Jackson paved for them will willingly and generously contribute to the cost of the touching public memorial service we saw today. It’s the least they could do
in their saying “farewell.”

Posted by: Mary Lee | July 7, 2009, 1:53 pm 1:53 pm

It’s sad that people are so hate-filled.
RIP, Michael Jackson.

Posted by: blessings | July 7, 2009, 1:54 pm 1:54 pm

The family is doing this for the fans, not for them,They would have preferred to do this in private like any other family would, because to them, he was family, not an icon. If the family had not shared this with the fans it would go againt alot of what Micheal would have wanted. and regardless on what ppl think he did make music history. everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but it is for GOD to judge now,

Posted by: christy essen | July 7, 2009, 1:56 pm 1:56 pm

Who’s judging…???
My point is if the Jackson family wanted the fans to have this big event then they should pay for it!! They’ve got money…and it was their family member not the state of California’s!
Who’s gonna step up and take donations when you or I are gone?? Certainly not the state!! Most of us “want” a lot of things for our family and we have to provide it. If Jackson “wanted” this for his fans he should have put that in the will and provided for it! The state has no business paying for a memorial for him…after all there were two other people that died the same week and I don’t see a big TV event for either of them…Michael Jackson was just a man and not much of one either!

Posted by: kowbelle | July 7, 2009, 2:04 pm 2:04 pm

Unbelievable! The state is facing bankruptcy and they still don’t get it. Californians perpetuates their own welfare mentality and impoverished coffers. Let the governmment pay for it. Even when the person creating the financial need is wealthier in death than he was in life.

Posted by: CreekProf | July 7, 2009, 2:13 pm 2:13 pm

This whole scenario speaks more about the ignorance of Los Angeles government and the narcissism of the Jackson family than it does Michael Jackson himself. MJ had public problems, but his life was sad.
If anyone listened to QJ, Madonna, Usher, all of those celebrities who memorialized MJ this week, you know they are in favor of this memorial. So let them pay for it, along with those who are attending.

Posted by: CreekProf | July 7, 2009, 2:24 pm 2:24 pm

Pass the glove…let each celeb in attendance throw in a credit card!
Seriously though, Talk about the incredible irresponsibilty of the government in CA & LA!!! If they had no way to pay for this “spectacle” then do not have it!
I am sure that those in the unemployement lines in CA will be glad to know that the city is asking for help to pay for this! What’s the matter, the Jackson family can’t pay for this like every other family has to when a member dies?

Posted by: Mike_C | July 7, 2009, 2:39 pm 2:39 pm

This has been a poorly staged circus. It was real simple. The City of LA could have said no, unless you pay. Where are all of Jacksons rich friends? Warning to my councilman. Get on board and no money out of the City Treasury.

This is so sad that micheal Jackson die
but he will never be forgot he was the best singer and person

They’re right to ask people to send in donations vs. tax dollars being used for this. Those who want to honor him and support the funeral ritual, send in some money to back this. The only trouble is that they didn’t ask for it BEFORE they made the plans, rather than AFTEr. Lawd knows there has been time to make this decision.
The hate and revenge that is spewed by so many here is abominable. What’s in your own closet that you could project such vile energy.
RIP, Michael…. and thanks for the good grooves.

To every one of the idiots posting trash, I have one thing to say: get a life. You call this a circus, yet you also call GWB the finest president we’ve ever had in history. And you wonder why President Obama has his work cut out for him, trying to repair our status as the Laughing Stock of the World after Eight Years of Idiocy.

Posted by: Don Normann | July 7, 2009, 4:17 pm 4:17 pm

Wow, Michael Jackson was a man who only wanted acceptance and love. He wanted to be able to trust someone and know for absolute sure that someone loved him unconditionally. I think Elizabeth Taylor did. I am sure his children did. But I can see why he never felt sure about anyone else. So, a big send off from people who may or may not truly love him and a memorial from a city (how cold). Not so great when you truly think about it. It’s almost like it’s not for Michael or his children that this is done, but for all those people who in life could not truly love him unconditionally (and hence cause his misery and death), so in death they think they can make up for it by spending a lot of money to show the world how much they cared. You people are not fooling God, and he is the one who is judging you for the way you tormented that boy with your wants and desires. You were given a talented young man and that was not enough, you always wanted more from him. I think he is the wealthiest, poor man I have ever seen; so rich in talent and money and so poor in self esteem and spirit, and not his fault.
I bet Michael would have preferred just his little ones and Elizabeth to send him off.
There may have been a few others that I am not privileged to know about, but finding people who are not asking anything from you, in any way, is so rare. They are the ones you want around you in life and death.

If I have a funeral for someone in my family, I have to pay for the police escort – it’s the law! Why should it be different for people who can afford it more than any of the rest of us? Because they are famous? Because someone from far away feels they need to come to our city to attend? I think they should have to pay to attend any event at the Staples Center-evn a funeral. Just think about the electric bill for this event – who is paying for that? I am tired of our society putting celebrities on a pedestal – the true celebrites are the soldiers paying the price for OUR freedom so we can enjoy our lives in peace.

All of you people that have only negative things to say…why don’t you keep your comments to yourself. Show some respect if your parents ever showed you how. If you don’t have anything nice to say why say anything at all!! They are asking for donations it’s up to you if you want to donate money, it’s not as if they are garnishing your wages…come on, GROW UP. SHOW SOME RESPECT YOU ARE NO ONE TO JUDGE ANYONE!

Posted by: wtf | July 7, 2009, 4:28 pm 4:28 pm

I believe this is a disgrace for mankind to pay such notice to one “HUMAN”, he was not a God. If the family wanted this travisity of a show and send off for their son and brother, they should pay the bill.
As one blogger said, Would the state and city pay for mine or your funeral? I don’t think so.
Where is the coverage for Farrar and Carl Maldin? They contributed to this country. Where is the big to-do about the average “Joe” that passed away.
It’s been two weeks, how much more do we have to tolerate about MJ?
I hold the broadcasting companies ad cable responsible for this circus. Sure have a piece or two about MJ and move on. There are other stories out there that are just as important and some even better to report.
Broadcasting, as usual, over kills everything they produce.
I’m disappointed and angry. Take the money these poor fools paid to just stand on the street to help pay LA, I won’t be sending them money, nor do I have sympathy for them. They should have said “NO”.

Posted by: Raven | July 7, 2009, 4:38 pm 4:38 pm

HAHA, why are you all getting mad at the people who have something to say about this circus. So what some of us didn’t like MJ or like what he did to children, yea lets pay off the family 20million so it will go away. Or how about when he hung his baby over a balcony. Guess its wrong for the average joe but not for STARS who sing and dance huh. How many of you paid attention to the American Clean Energy and Security Act while MJ died on the same day. I bet you were one of the people who crashed google trying to search for MJ. LOL your savior Obama is the same as GWB, check who spent more money then all presidents put together. Hmm good going with this Depression, maybe the unemployed will pay for this funeral.

Don’t you think the person or persons responsible for putting on this fiasco should be the ones paying for it.

Posted by: LEE | July 7, 2009, 5:22 pm 5:22 pm

I agree Lee, the family should pay for it since they are millionaires. But you know why should they have to spend their money when the taxpayers or the unemployed will pay for it. Or I know lets make LA pay for it since they are already broke.

Posted by: some_guy12345 | July 7, 2009, 5:34 pm 5:34 pm

It is not only sad but shameful for people to have such harsh expressions. It doesn’t matter if your black or white. What kind of world are we living in and what are we teaching our children when so many adults have such cold/bitter comments to make. Freedom of expression is free but IGNORANCE is costly. If you do not support the efforts to give charitably then don’t, but please some of the descriptors really speak and/or suggest your mentality and spirit is SADDEN and you should try praying. MJ

Posted by: mchelle brown | July 7, 2009, 7:27 pm 7:27 pm

THE JACKSON FAMILY DID NOT ASK THE FANS, PUBLIC OR MEDIA TO COME TO THE HOSPITAL (WHEN HE DIED), TO NEVERLAND (TO DROP OF FLOWERS & MORN), OR TO THE STAPLE CENTER (FOR HIS MEMORIAL). THIS WAS SOMETHING THE PUBLIC WANTED. ANOTHER POINT I HAVE TO MAKE IS, IF THE CALIFORNIA PEOPLE KNEW THEY WERE IN DEEP CRAP WITH THE STATE BUDGET, WHY WERE THEY THE FIRST TO SHOW UP IN ALL THOSE PLACES???

Posted by: MUTEHERETIC | July 7, 2009, 7:28 pm 7:28 pm

Me again. What is wrong with voluntary donations, ya’ll? They are not taking it out of the taxpayer pocket or yours.
And to everyone who’s slamming God-knows-who for the coverage, let me ask you this: are you a sports fan(atic)? Look at the incredible amount of obsession our culture has for sports, Idol, Talent, Paris Hilton and the silly couple that is getting divorced.
This is not an aberration — it is not unique to Michael. This is America. Stop laying it all at his feet.

I’m ashamed of the United States for glorifying this “man”.The brave men and women who are fighting and dying for this country should be honored, and it is embarassing that the media and government of this great country have their priorities so screwed up as to “honor ” him.Ask the Jackson family and their so called minister friends to pay for the fiasco, not the taxpayers. The Jacksons have the money and wanted this let them take care of it.Not everyone wanted it so let them pay for all of it.

Posted by: Texas Grandma | July 7, 2009, 9:22 pm 9:22 pm

How dare the mayor ask Jackson fans to help foot the bill for expenses the city incurred due to the Michael Jackson’s Memorial and Burial?
How dare he put up a site asking for donations from fans to pay for these events!
The city should Never have spent the money on private events. Monies the city and the state do NOT have.
Taxpayers do not need to foot this bill, the Jackson family and AEG promoters need to foot this bill! They are the individuals with the money .. Not Taxpayers who are already strapped by this economy and the unemployment rate of this state.
It is Incomprehensible of the mayor to request this of taxpayers or Jackson fans.
Go get the money from the Jackson family and AEG promoters who organized and promoted these events!

I did write the following to the majors office today. “Why are we asking the citizens of L.A. to pick up the tab for Jackson’s memorial? What is the family contributing? Did the performers today get paid for being there? How about using money from the royalty’s of his increased record sales. Why are we spending money we do not have? While donations are tax deductible. aren’t most people getting IOU’s from this State of California? Our city cannot afford teachers for our schools or lunches for underprivileged children, yet we have a fund for this? The only donation I have today is common sense. We all work too hard with too little to show for it.

Posted by: Confused | July 8, 2009, 1:24 am 1:24 am

I’m wondering if the coffin in front of millions of people was empty? While everyone was watching/attending the public service, was MJ secretly being buried at an undisclosed location so he could R.I.P. without threat of his body being stolen? The Jackson family had a private service for MJ at Forrest Lawn Cemetery. I’m thinking the coffin was switched out at the private service, then the family escorted the empty coffin to Staples for the public service. Just sayin………

To all you people out there who always have something negative to say about someone. Screw you!! All you people see are the negative things. You don’t even pay attention to all the positive issues. Michael is a legend. There is no one else like him, not Elvis, not the beatles, NO ONE. He was the most charitable person in the world, but you can’t see the positive side. We all have faults in our lives no one is perfect,so who are any of you to judge. Michael was accused of those things, nothing was ever proven. The only person he will have to answer too is GOD. NOT YOU! Let the city pay for it, they pay for everything else. The money they will spend Michael I’m sure made it and more for them at some point in time.

Why can’t the mega rich in attendance pay the bill. They could easily afford it.
