Seeking Summer Relief in Pools Beyond Packed
ABC's Jennifer Wu reports from Beijing: Think a crammed subway ride to work is a bummer? Think again.
Imagine that degree of crowding in a local swimming pool when you’re just trying to have some fun. For thousands of Chinese in Nanjing trying to find relief from the summer heat, there has been little option but pools beyond packed.
Others have tried jumping straight into the Yangtze River despite health and safety warnings, desperate to cool off as temperatures continue to rise. Beaches, too, have seen record crowds, as people fight to find a space untaken for a little relaxation or sunbathing.
Chinese state media has reported a continued heat wave this week across central and eastern China. A number of provinces have announced high temperature alerts. Shanghai on Monday experienced weather well over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, a temperature that Hunan province has averaged daily according to recent reports.

Just stay home and get in your own bath tub.
What type of fun is that to get in a pool with absolutely no room to turn around?

I guess it is a good way to meet someone, but I prefer peace and solitude. Yikes.

On reducing the numbers in the pool: A snooty group felt a summer class of Black kids “changed the complextion” –pun intended– of the club’s pool, so they kicked them out. The children got a trip to Florida after being insulted, but a trip to Disneyland will not cure the harm intended by the bigots and realized by youngsters who suffer constant reminders that ours is a racist country.
